CW formula for a series: 1)find an underrated cast 2)create a solid foundation 3)campy storyline 4)get you to watch the 1st season or so and be invested 5) fuck it up 6)whatever is left, fuck that up too 7)end series 8)pat selves on thier back
Also heavy handed political messages that are so overbearing and poorly done it annoys the audience despite the audience probably agreeing with the general sentiment of the message.
It’s step 4 tho😂that’s literally what happened to me with the flash and arrow, you get through season 1 and 2 and become invested and they slowly just stop giving a shit
@@Torpid6441 The 100 had a lot of great character development. Sure, the first couple of episodes were very CW-esque but after that they strayed away from that.
so in other words; Clark is a "Shield" while Kara is a "Sword." He guards people while she attacks problems, something the writers forgot, and just made her Superman in a skirt.
@@liaminator4950 Holy fuck, you're right, jesus christ, even down to the whole "I don't belong with them", "Killing? BADASS", "Saving humans isn't my primary concern, dealing with the threat is" and identifying and focusing more on the fact that Superman was kryptonian than human, even though Superman's whole point is that he's human first kryptonian second, while Supergirls whole point is that she identifies more with her Kryptonian identity than her human one, hell, even the moment where Superman was more mad at the fact that he killed Zod, the last other Kryptonian besides himself more than caring about the millions of humans that died, that is a textbook Supergirl moment where she'd be mad about killing the only other member of their species, jesus christ what a massive fuck up
you know what's crazy? Smallville got supergirl better way back in season 7. She comes to earth as a late teenager, she's focused, stubborn, outspoken but not annoying, and she's not just a female clark. Why they couldn't just map this supergirl show off smallville's supergirl will forever elude me.
I mean, they didnt really nail it with Ruby Rose. Also, Arrowverse Oliver is just small screen Batman. Meanwhile, Supergirl was casted by CBS, so only good casting they really nailed was Grant as the Flash.
I’m so tired of the DC Universe being ruined. It really has potential, but the people making it have no idea who the character are. The animated universe is so good!
@@forestfilms472 My gods. How can anyone think _Wonder Woman 1984_ is good? Even when you ignore the fact that Diana basically rapes a guy like way too many people seem to choose to do, that movie might actually might be the most nonsensical entry in the entire DCEU, which is saying a lot. That's not a rhetorical question by the way. I legitimately want to know how anyone can think that movie was good given everything wrong with it.
@The Damned I kinda liked it. It is campy as hell and its dumb and its full of plotholes, but its what I needed during covid. The movie made me feel good. Its a break from all the depressing news and its the first time in months that a pure fun movie came out.
I always had a theory that the producers never wanted to do a Supergirl show. they wanted to do a Superman Show but they were told no. so they did the next best thing they got a Supergirl show but decided to tell superman stories thru her (as much as they could get away with.) and i say this because when they show the title credits at the start of each episode they credit the creators of her with the creators of Superman even though Supergirl were created by very different people. also they kept saying that Supergirl has next to nothing in Budgets but when it was announced that Superman & Lois were coming to the CW suddenly they have a budget.
Pretty much it's the same with arrow making GA into Batman with a bow and a green costume. Warner brothers wouldn't the arrowverse to have a character if they planned a movie. Like when suicide squad was in the works arrow no longer could use the suicide squad in the show. Now with. I plans to make another Superman film they are allowing supes on the small.screen
It's not really a theory. It's true. It's the same with Arrow, and Batwoman. They wanted to make Superman and Batman shows, but WB didn't allow The CW to use those characters on the small screen yet. So they made Superman and Batman shows using characters they were allowed to use. They made a crappy Superman show, and reskinned it as a Supergirl show. They made a Batman show, and reskinned it as a Green Arrow show. Now they're making a crappy Batman show, and they reskinned it as a Batwoman show. Destroying the reputation of these characters in the process.
DC comics have been going for longer than Marvel (I don't read them but...) haven't they had time to come up with more characters, including someone more suitable for turning into superman? Apollo, for instance. Or Steel.
Melissa Benoist is such a good actress and I LOVE her as Supergirl and I despise how CW just shat all over both Kara and Melissas potential. I especially love the concept of Alex Danvers and her relationship with Kara and what that brought and could brought to BOTH their arcs. Im so angry CW did them both fucking dirty.
Melissa though, still had some views (not all, but some) that aligned with what the CW wanted in terms of changing or influencing the audience - like how masculinity (the idea that all men are universally evil beings) should stamped out by women in today's culture, and like the video says the writers wanted to compare (or unseat) Superman to only Kara having greater achievements over her cousin. It's almost like how Disney made Disey Ridley become Rey Skywalker while making Luke Skywalker be ousted in the sequel trilogy & making Rey all perfect in everyone's eyes. In contrast, in Legends, the fans wanted Luke to still play a major role in the stories of Thrawn and others while creating new female characters that don't take away from Luke's part in the universe to face new threats after the original series. Melissa is a good actress, but some in the CW casting & directors had agendas that many in the audience likely saw would later doom the show in the long run. I am only saying this as an independent viewer who has watched many shows (like The Flash, for example) that have tried to do similar things and only met a very brief footnote in television history. CW needs to learn the lessons from what their previous show, Smallville, brought to the table and why people loved that show even after almost two decades since it aired. That show did Supergirl justice, for what it's worth.
the "sociopolitical commentary" on this show is literally the definition of performative activism, it's like the writers don't understand the issues that they're writing about at all and get all their info from Instagram story reposts...it would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
Exactly! It happens with a lot of CW shows. They don't really care about any of this stuff but they know most of their fans are young so they drop terms. It's very insulting
BS, they are just looking for bums on seats. Exactly the same problem Hollywood had when Star Wars became a huge hit and they all launched their own Star Wars, but had zero clue how to do it so the vast majority of those films are terrible, but still hoped people were too dumb to notice the difference anyway. Same thing here, they just hope that by putting in the messages, people will automatically love it ...
I Came down here to the comment section to say Just this... And it was already said... I Swear Watching the show Just makes me think that the Writers/Directors/Who-cares that Make the show all basically sit around the room and Ask each other "what are the "wokes" Talking about These days? What the fuck is that? Whatever Just do 5 Minutes of Wiki and Twitter Research on it and Write the story around what you think it means, we all know none of us actually give a shit about any of this", and the Worst Part is how we as the audience can FEEL that's what's going on backstage from Looking at it... And Being Hit in the Head by their Ham fisted attempts to "Be Woke"... Seriously I've seen Kid's shows be FAR more Subtle and tactful about their Subject matter, and they're Intended for KIDS, who probably won't even get Subtext..
Eh. Benoist is mediocre. She works as this lame version of Supergirl, but wouldn't fit the edgier teen version from the comics... who's more interesting. And visually Laura V was hotter. She'll be easy to replace
@@Knightfall182 It's not the actor that's mediocre, it's the writers who are. Can 100% guarantee that if hbo max existed years ago and picked up this show it would have been far better than what we got. @@Knightfall182 she was great as red k supergirl and when she went slightly dark at the beginning of season 3 after mon-el left. I wish the writers had done more with that.
They skipped over what's arguably the most interesting part about Supergirl. Superman was born on Krypton but was raised on Earth. He has no memory of Krypton or its tragic end. His notion of Krypton comes from archives and holograms. Kara was born and raised on Krypton. She had friends and family, a whole life and then she watched as her world literally burned. Everything and everyone she had ever known was wiped out. The only thing that keeps her from completely breaking down is the fact that she has a mission, to find and protect her infant cousin except by the time she reaches Earth, her cousin not only doesn't need protecting, he's a revered icon of this primitive alien world. The first season of Supergirl should really have been about that. It should be about her having PTSD, survivor's guilt, about dealing with her trauma and her resentment for Clark and the world he calls home. It should have been about her learning about Earth and figuring out if she can have a life and not be consumed by misery. Really the last episode of the first season should have been Kara putting on the suit for the first time. But instead they just skipped over all that dramatic potential and made her a Superman clone. Look, the first season of Supergirl wasn't bad but the whole show ended up being a waste of the character and a waste of potential.
Damn now I want to watch a superhero show with an actually good plot with complex characters like this. If anybody knows of any, or animes with complex characters like what was described in this comment please hit me with recommends
You're totally right, and I think the biggest mistake in this show was the fact that the story starts like many years after she arrive to earth, because what you're saying it's more something she had to deal with in her early years, it would've been very interesting to see her path to become a hero, but it never happened, that's a huge waste of potential
The video covers this. I see a few difficulties going with this: 1. The woman playing Supergirl would have to be a young girl, not an adult woman. Or you cast an adult to play a high school aged kid like most TV shows and movies do. 2. In casting a young girl as your star you now have to follow labor laws about shooting with minors. Some of the biggest drawbacks to this are 8 hr work days max, 48 hrs per week max, schooling has to be provided, and can only work during specific hours of the day. That's a lot to deal with for your LEAD actor and show's namesake. 3. A young Kara doesn't match up with The Flash and Green Arrow. How can you do crossover team-ups when 2 of the 3 are adults? 4. You have more to censor. How is an audience going to react to seeing a young girl getting punched and beat up? Even though she has super strength, durability, etc, she is still human in appearance which comes with rules. I think a 1st season focusing on this was THE way to go but for live action it makes it extremely difficult when a simple time jump is a lot easier.
Smallville is by far the best live action adaptation of Superman and characters like Lex and Kara, they did the characters justice and made them complex.
yes! TBH, i think arrow is the only show that really worked, i mean, you see the character grow, and ALL his phases are FREAKING AWESOME, murderer, wanna-be hero, knowing who he really is, and finally making the ultimate sacrifice, but flash and supergirl, dgmw, i like supergirl and flash, is a silly hero show, but i liked some parts, but it's always the same motivational speach, it just makes them kinda boring
Not to the same degree as Supergirl. It tends vary, based on each heroes strength/abilities - but in reverse. So at the human end of things, you've got Oliver who consistently won most of his fights on Arrow with very little help from any of his increasing band of sidekicks. Next up is Barry who gets his ass kicked a little and needs a bit more help from his respective entourage, but he still gets more than a few victories and fundamentally, he is usually allowed to operate at full power. Then there's Kara. And because she's basically uber-powerful, the writers consistently have no clue how to incorporate that into a story. And so begins a literally weekly list of reasons why every episode's baddie of the week is stronger than her. And that's not taking into account her general nerfing, not least of which are the countless times she seems to forget she has super speed.
@@whocaresguy yea also allegra feels very forced idk why the writers decided to make her series regular, everytime we see her, i lose interest in that scene they are adding so many main characters, there is literally 12 main characters now
This video has now convinced me that I need to read Super Girl. I am not that into DC comics, beyond Batman, and I always assumed that SuperGirl was a genderbent version of Superman, mainly based off of this show and the old movie made of her, so I never gave her a chance. So hearing what she is actually about kind of shocked me. She sounds INCREDIBLY interesting, and it baffles me that they have not taken even a little bit of what she is actually about and translated it to screen. Just listening I can, in a way, relate to her, and as a child I know I would have loved her as having ADHD and a bit of an anger issue made me feel like I was all alone and a complete outsider.
I'd say if you haven't already start with something like woman of tomorrow, the story's amazing, characterisation is on point, the writing is brilliant and the art style and colouring is jaw dropping consistently. On top of that its quite short being about 8 issues or so, so if it isnt your thing its not that big of a deal and it is also really cheap off of amazon, last I checked for all of them its like £10.
@@dadeleemurphy85 What? I tried to get into it ages ago, but there were a few too many gatekeepers in the community so I dropped it and focused on Marvel instead.

It’s not the most popular book, but I personally loved her new 52 run. It was a new direction for the character that made me fall in love with the character
Thing is Supergirl was never written well in comics. She was rebooted and killed off and rebooted again. I'd just go and use the Superman TAS version who was the best example.
@@SwiftNimblefoot That's the real truth. Supergirl was never an established character in the comics like her cousin Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc. That's why you'll hardly see as much discussion of comic accuracy when it comes to portraying her in non-comic media as much as Superman or Batman.
Writer: So I wanna make show about Supergirl. CEO: Sounds fine. She basically just superman... but a girl? Writer: Actually, sir, she's a bit more complicated and nuanced than that. You see, she has some aggression issues and is more prone to fighting than talking. She also doesn't really care as much about humans at first because she was raised on Krypton long enough to be trained a bit by their military before the planet exploded. So she's also not the nicest person at first either. CEO: so... you saying she's kind of a bitch then? Writer: I wouldn't really put it that way, sir but- CEO: Audiences don't want to watch bitchy women. They gotta be nice, attractive, and smile. Rewrite her like that and I'll print you a check. Writer: That's not what I... Oh, that's a lot of zeroes. I'll get right on that, boss.
it's honestly the opposite lmao. It almost seemed like they want a character with very little if any flaws. Supergirl is almost a Mary Sue because they're afraid to give her any
While I also love Supergirl, I have disagreements with Space Ninja over her personality. I also believe Kara was never trained by any military. She was 15/16/17 when Krypton blew up and by all accounts was a regular teenage Kryptonian. Unless it was hidden in some dialogue in the mediocre New 52 runs which doesn't exist anymore. And the dialogue of "I don't really care about humans yadda yadda yadda" doesn't make any sense because she wouldn't have taken up the Super family mantle otherwise. "I dress up and act like a superhero just because I want to beat the shit out of people". It's a kind of fundamentally flawed view/writing of the character. She's hotheaded because she's ultimately still a teenager and doesn't know the boundaries of her strength. Teenagers like I was back then, famously have zero self control in general.
The comics version of Supergirl wouldn't work at all with the "girlboss" character they wanted to create. There's this weird new obsession in entertainment where female characters have to be these super kind perfect people who constantly remind you how POWERFUL and BADASS they are and their only flaws are the ones men can "solve", like emotional neediness and insecurities about being female. It really negates the strength these characters are supposed to have when their only flaws are they need someone else to validate their strength
Supergirl's Red Lantern arc is unironically one of her best stories aside from her origin story. In some ways it fits her well because her character is really built around her two conflicting traits of both anger and a sense of justice. At the same time, even though she's the most powerful Red Lantern and the Red Lanterns are really glad to have her around when there's a fight, they also recognize that she's not truly HAPPY as a Red Lantern, despite being so good at it. At some point Guy Gardner (who defected from Green to Red) actually convinces Kara to leave the Red Lanterns, which she does by flying into the sun and ripping off the ring (she has to do this since a Red Lantern removing their ring usually results in death without the aid of a Blue Lantern). Guy also doesn't want her to die in their upcoming fight against Atrocitus, the former founder of the Red Lantern Corps. She had so many cool defining character traits that made her different from any other superhero, and in the show we got NONE of them. Such a shame.
I always felt like Doomsday was lucky Kara wasn't there when he showed up and beat up Clark cause she would have just accepted all the collateral damage and beat him to death
People are saying this and that about the show, but it's good to see people praising Melissa as Supergirl! They hit the jackpot when they cast her, she put her all into the role, and she made the character popular all over again, and it's no wonder many of her colleagues hold her in such a regard. I'm sure Sasha Calle will do fine, but it'll be damn hard to top Melissa Benoist!
@@nickhydier1201 This person is not saying that supergirl is a good character. They are saying that the actress did a very good job with what she was given. Or atleast that's what I think.
The point is melissa got the looks of kara and her acting was fine, she only need a better writer and budget production team and she will be the perfect version of supergirl. She isn't overrated tho.
Melissa Benoist has set the gold standard for the character, many agree that she is the definitive Supergirl for this generation, many also agree that she is the embodiment of the character, on and off screen. She may play a superhero on TV, but a lot of people consider her to be a real life Supergirl because of how she uses her platform, an example of this is when she shared her experience with domestic violence, and has helped many people in similar situations. The show has its flaws, no doubt, and I do wish they could do better by her, but nobody can deny that Melissa Benoist IS Supergirl.

The stories he talks about in the video were from the New 52 era (started in 2011) and the Rebirth era (started in 2016). The New 52 was a pretty dark and weird time that DC have spent years moving on from, but it had some good stories; the Supergirl series might have been one of the better ones
@@najhoant thank you someone acknowledges that new52 kara wasn't Kara's default setting. Supergirl has had a weird history thanks to dc rebooting it's universe over and over it's history.
Start at the beginning in the late 50s where SG started off as literal wishful thinking from Jimmy Olsen. From there pick and choose the comics up until recently.
@@phillipseaton9389 I've heard some good things about the New 52 story (apparently, the writer, Tony Bedard, has written Supergirl before), such as Kara growing as a character and becoming nicer. I did read the Red Daughter of Krypton story and thought it was at least decent
That was honestly unexpected. I have always assumed that Supergirl was just a female counterpart to Superman. I was really intrigued when you explained her true character in the comic.
I’ve never read the Supergirl comics, so when I first watched the show, it looked... okay? But hearing about her character in the comics, I feel like we’ve been cheated out of _a lot._ The DCEU doesn’t mind getting a little dark, so why bother erasing Kara’s complex internal conflicts in the show?
It's the goddamn CW. What did you expect? Tragedy with DC shows: Brilliant and terrific shows like Constantine and Swamp Thing get cancelled with just one season but lame cringy CW shows go on for season after season.
SJw's are in charge of the DC universe on the CW now. 1'st 2 seasons were cool and weren't cringe. Then they let the SJW's take over. Like the video said, but in nmore detail. What makes supergirl so interesting is her struggle trying to fit in. She remembers krypton, krypton was waaay more advanced than earth. She always ran into issues concerning this. She was also very confident and felt above humans. She couldn't figure out how superman lived like them and holds himself back. CW got popular with the superhero genre and the higher ups stepped in. They're on a "woke" kick right now. So they ordered supergirl to be a show about "'girl power" and SJW politics. Prime example, all of the men are weak and women are strong. Her adopted sister(who basically plays the role superman played in her life) used to be a great mentor and a bad ass. Then got turned into a LGBT check box who also wants to be a mother really bad lol. Then there's the destruction of Braniac 5. He's been turned into a love interest of a transexual super hero(which was a very minor super hero smh). Funny thing is, Braniac's personality and character is how supergirl is supposed to be portrayed lol.
I remember the first episode when Kara got her ass kicked by some alien, trains for a bit, goes to fight the alien again, is getting her ass kicked again, then someone watching goes “she can’t win!” And Alex says “why? Because she’s a girl? That’s exactly what we were counting on.” And I’m sitting here like… they were planning on her winning by being a girl? Is she gonna try to seduce the alien or something? Its not like anybody said anything about girls being weak, Alex just brought it up out of nowhere.
I always felt very bad for Mellisa Benoist for being stuck playing a female Superman and they did the same thing with Batwoman which I was hoping would be better...
I know right it literally teaches young girls, which is supposed to be aimed at that demographic, that they only have value and worth if they're being compared to males and to come out on top (which is just reverse sexism) and that is soooo damaging and reductive!
My favourite part was when Lena went from a generally good Lex hater to basically being Lex and devising an evil plan that would hurt innocent people because Kara kept her SECRET identity SECRET for the exact reason that any hero has a SECRET identity, to protect the people close to them. It was even more contrived than an already enormously contrived set of shows. It was also greatly weighed down with whatever political messages that were also incredibly contrived.
I totally forgot that part. OMG. You find out your best friend is Supergirl and then care about when she told you? Seriously? I would think she would be unable to contain her excitement. My friend is supergirl. You are freaking Supergirl. "you know you can't tell anyone".. ugh..why did you tell me? How can I keep this a secret? ugh. Ok, I have sooo many questions now. This is amazing! I am so honored that you would tell me. Instead she is angry with her. What? In what universe does that actually make sense? I was thinking what a di** friend. Kara should have just leave and never speak to her again.
@@donutwindyYou do realize Supergirl went behind Lena’s back to tell James to find her “secret” stash of kryptonite only to find out she was making it anyway? James was about to but the refused an eventually told Lena he was asked by Supergirl. This is what caused their descending friendship, and to learn she was Kara the entire time would lead you to believe what else is she lying to your face about?
I do generaly like CW's DC shows particularly Stargirl , Flash, Superman & Lois BUT i definitely agree with the point that “This Supergirl is not Supergirl. She’s a female Superman.” SO DAMN RIGHT!! Edit: For those citing the particular shows I mentioned I do like the rest I just happened to mentioned those.
Superman and Lois is filled with so many bigoted tropes and stereotypes...even former writers who were kicked off for trying to remove such items from the script have said this.
I loved the first season of supergirl - I know nothing about the comics or the character - it had a lot of joyful energy, explored Kara's grief and her relationship with the elders on Krypton in a way that female characters were starved of. It was cool to have a woman who was nuanced and angry but also Good when I was fifteen! It helped that Melissa and many others put their all into the performances and really appreciated what it meant to people. Completely went downhill in the second season and I abandoned it there but I loved the first season.
Season 1 was sooooo good and the only problem I had with it was that there was so much content in that season and it was condensed into the one season. Like take Red kryptonite episode. I really liked evil Kara but they should’ve put red kryptonite as its separate season. Season 2 was alright but season 3 I really liked. The next two seasons after was just trash.
I enjoyed the first two seasons. It was a fun show to watch. But I lost interest at season 3. I returned to it briefly when Lex came into the show but lost interest again soon after. It's a shame though. Like the video said, lots of wasted potential.
The CW did a huge disservice to both of DC's superhero cousins. Kate Kane got the short end of the stick as well. They turned her into a wannabe Batman. Which is the literal polar opposite of DC's original Batwoman. It sucks that the CW's versions were the ones first introduced to the mainstream. Now they have a bad cred.
Even before I knew nothing about the comic Supergirl, my favorite episode was always the one where she was exposed to Red Kryptonite - she just seemed so much more badass and down-to-earth than the innocent, ever cheerful supergirl we got
Yes, exactly. Smallville had it's flaws, but it still had a consistant level of heart and soul throughout. and had the best character development including Supergirl. We just maybe should have seen her a little more. Like helping Clark with the Kandorians in season 9. Laura is forever my Supergirl.
Its even more weird because the superman spin off actually captures the essence of superman by showing him as chill country boy with flaws trying to make best of his situation.
I had no idea how awesome Supergirl was in the comics. The CW show was my first real introduction to her since I mostly read Marvel's comics. Definitely going to check out that comic you recommended at the end. You summed up a lot of my gripes with the show. The fight scenes, the one-liners, the super heavy-handedness....I watched until the end, but I don't blame anyone that stopped after a few seasons.
I'm 68 years old and I remember Supergirl from 1959. I always liked Supergirl there, but she hasn't been done justice for decades. I seldom saw the show.
I remember always hating how nice she was, idk if that makes sense Like I know she’s a superhero but it was like if one person had to die to save millions she’s still have a hard time deciding
Actually, I don't think so. Considering how the writers are, they'll probably somehow change a lot about the plot or something like that and make it bad, possibly even worse than the current show.

I would have loved to see her go through that type of ark in the beginning, and the slowly become the more lovable caring person we got, that still struggles with it a little bit.
Dude, just the Kara character personality in the series was enough. The only problem is that they didn't explore her character. Heck, there's a mountain of things that can make her as a complex character like she saw the death of Krypton, staying in the phantom zone for 24 years awake, Clark leaving her with the Danvers family, Alex killing Astra and more. They could make scenarios of what she thought and feel about it, how she'll solve those issue. One of the things that could have make this supergirl more unique is that one back story of hers that the writers often forgot; that she's the youngest inductee in the Science Guild on Krypton
Imagine me in 2017 me watching Supergirl on CW slowly realizing this show will never touch Power Girl, Red Lantern, the mountains stacked on mountains of PTSD from her world and identity being vaporized and becoming a refugee and tears her apart that she can't ever return because that's all she does is miss her home, and is without a shred of hope for anything, it slowly eats her up inside, and she stays angry and untrusting because she has no hope for anything, and I got "Karamel" shipping instead

The poorly-handled socio-politics should be called out for what it is, but the anti-sjw reactionary stuff I've seen elsewhere doesn't really help, and I think causes more left-leaning people to dismiss any solid criticisms with "well, you just don't like strong women" when that's not what the problem is. At this point in time, certain words have become so overused and abused that they've lost their original meanings: tomboy, Nazi, SJW... So they hear reactionaries talking about it and automatically assume it must be a bad thing.
Women can be sexist just like PoC can be rascist. Not every woman is strong just like not every man is strong. Egalitarianism is best, not double standards. Hypocrisy is a bad look on anyone
i wouldnt say this was the most intelligent and thoughtful criticism this show could have but yeah its definitely better than an anti-sjw could ever make about anything for sure lol
Yo honestly at the beginning of the video when you were just talking about the history of Supergirl in the comics, I forgot what video I was watching and just wanted to hear more about that. I had no idea she was such a cool character, it seems like she literally solves all the problems I have with Superman. You should definitely make more videos about comics, I'd love to hear more.
22:24 Bro, remember in S1 when Cat Grant deduced that Kara was Supergirl and then told her to her face that she'd worked this out, thanking her for saving her life time after time in a genuinely effective and touching moment that promised to move these two characters forward? Aaaand then next episode opens on Kara trying frantically to convince Cat that she's not actually Supergirl despite the infinitely more dignified and logical option being to just accept it, and then the episode ends on Martian Manhunter using his powers to make it look like Kara and Supergirl are in the same room, making Cat completely retract what she'd been saying all episode and reverting their relationship back to the status quo? I member.
actually in later episode after kara left cat said something a long the lines of go do it supergirl meeting she knew the whole time but just pretned not to idk why
They could really nail some stuff with Cat and Kara lol like in the episode when Kara loses her powers and Cat gives that whole speech about how sometimes everyone has to step up a little or whatever That episode is like, top tier Tv and then I dunno they fired the writers who wrote it or something
Man I forced myself through 3 seasons because I love Melissa as a performer since she was on Glee (much of the same issues there, shit writing wasting her talent), and I enjoyed some of it but ultimately got bored. I never knew that Supergirl from the comics had such depth, and it’s very sad we didn’t got that kind of character embodied by Melissa :(
I never knew who Supergirl really was. Aside from her popping up in shows like Young Justice and Justice League Unlimited, I only ever saw The CW's Supergirl. Your explanation of her is eye opening and fantastic. I hope she gets a faithful live action adaptation.
@@justwonder1404 I would be watchin it home alone, and then my Mom comes back from work and i would change the channel but idek why cause it was pretty cool
I actually liked supergirl until I watched this, and now I feel gypped. Like I could have had that cool, badass supergirl, who is actually a unique person, instead of female Superman. I FEEL GYPPED.
You know a character isn't actually strong or independent when the writers need to verbally remind you every couple minutes. Especially when it also requires putting down another character
On top of that CW supergirl is repeatedly and consistently nerfed and appears weak as hell. Not only do the writers have to keep going about how she's more powerful than Superman but they contradict themselves by making her weak as hell.
That is 💯 correct. It just means that they're not confident and are desperate for SG to succeed in any means possible. Which dudes, she is already a strong independent woman that has her own friends, allies... and enemies. That is if the TV show team bothered to read the comics.
what pisses me off the most about the panic attack scene was that i too was excited. when i was in hs i had a lot of panic attacks, and they got so bad that i couldn’t sit in class anymore and was pulled out. the worst part of panic attacks, is that when you’re in public, there are consequences to having them, and it’s usually just people truly caring about you, but also. it’s distracting. my teachers weren’t happy to tell me i couldn’t be in a classroom anymore, but it was the best thing for me, and for the other kids too. i went back after that year!!! but they should have given her real world consequences bc… that’s what makes people brave enough to get true help sometimes. and bc realistically, not everyone was nice about me distracting everyone. she would have gotten in trouble, and exploring that guilt would have been really amazing for those of us who actually have panic disorder and anxiety.
Season 3 in general was a mostly great season not just cuz of the villain, but Kara's inner turmoil of balance of her life and anger Something that's never explored ever again....heck Red Daughter got more depth than Kara and they're both Melissa

Wow. When you talk about the actual supergirl. I was intrigued and it sounds really good. Because of this show I never knew that supergirl is actually supposed to be really awesome
In the comics, she is... and has her own identity besides Supergirl. Just like Barbara Gordon, who is more than just Batgirl ( Oracle, Birds of Prey, and Commissioner).
My heart broke for the fans when I heard what they did to her. The elevator scene would be a good inciting incident. How can you ruin that, are they this incompetent?!
Pretty much spot on. Superman had almost no flaws which is why Supergirl, even with the same powers, was far more interesting. She struggles to fit in, be accepted, do good, and we have to route for her. This one is just dumb. My first thoughts even from the first show... you were raised human from 12 to 20-something... and just let 12 years go by watching people die and not helping anyone? You must have a Krypton education so... you are don't help anyone you know like fusion or something? Yet your goal is to spend the next 30 years of your life... in entry level corporate America? Sure?!? Far better to just follow the source. She is an alien who just arrived, does not fit in, does not love humans or have strong ties, and the drama and conflict is her fitting in. It also means she doesn't need to have overpowered villains as a primary source of conflict, goofy alternate identifies, etc.
More Interesting than superman??? Lmao hell no. She's a good character but damn have u read some of Supermans comics? He too struggles and is a flawed man trying to do the right thing. It's hard being good and doing the right but Clark does it .
@Shin Shaman I think he means more superman is not weak he has flaws but he is not as weak as Supergirl series made him look, they purposely underminded him and made Supergirl with no flaws in the show essentially to make her seem better because they knew he would overshadow her.
Look. To each his own. I've read comics and there are some wonderful Superman adaptations. Authors get full marks, because it is so hard to get flaws into him. Most are purely mental. Supergirl is just gives (IMO) are much broader canvas to paint on. Which is why this series sucks because the parts which make her a broader canvas is just ignored. She could have been the ultimate outsider. Someone with knowledge above every human on the planet. Issues connecting with anyone, etc. and... they made her Superman 2.0, except now she is just selfish and stupid. Going to watch people die for 15+ years because... you come from a technologically advanced society and your goal is to serve coffee?
Yeah and hearing him talk about the character from the comics I got sooo upset about the version we got from the CW. Like they fuck everything up! It's infuriating!
Personally the version of Supergirl hes talking about I don't really care for. The version he's talking about has only been around since 2011. Her personality before 2011 was much less angry and far more hopeful. She hung out with the Legion Of Superheroes. Trained hand to hand combat with Wonder Woman on Themyscira.
@@phillipseaton9389 You mean the post crisis version? No, she was still insanely angry. It just wasn't her only character trait like it was in the New 52. Post Crisis Supergirl had just as much rage and potential to become a Red Lantern as New 52 Supergirl did, that rage just wasn't the absolute only character trait that they focused on in the comics.
If I had to write Supergirl, I would make her the connection between Superman and Krypton. It doesn't really make much sense for Superman to mourn for his biological parents because he never knew them, and it doesn't make sense for him to get sentimental on Krypton's destruction, as he never lived there. He lived a happy life on Earth, and that's his home. Sure, he can get nostalgic about the fact that an entire civilization was wiped out, but at the end of the day he cares more for the Earth, which was, is, and will always be his home. Supergirl would be the total opposite of that. She witnessed the destruction of her home planet, and she feels terrible at the fact that her people and their ways will never return. She should be the one teaching Clark about Krypton's society, their culture and their ways of living, at the same time that she's trying to learn about Earth and the different things on the planet, like the animals and stuff. Sure, she's impulsive and is prone of getting angry, but she's a good person at heart, and she knows that she will get the same powers as Superman and will follow his example because he's an inspiration for her. But even after she has realized that Earth is her new home, she will never have the same attachment that Superman has. Hell, she might even see earthlings as cavemen, considering Krypton was basically futuristic Earth, but she still decides to protect Earth once she starts making bonds with its people and she gains friends and allies along the way.
That's exactly how I envision Supergirl. I also think it was a huge mistake giving Kara the suit in the beginning, just how they gave Clark his suit in the beginning of Man of Steel. Suit symbolizes that their choices they made through the story lead them to the suit. Have her make choices, make mistakes, make bonds, then give her the suit at the Season 1 finale. And there are so many other good ideas lying around.
I'd actually would like to hear your take on the "Batwoman" series. It would be interesting to hear an actual constructive breakdown like this of that show as I've heard similar complaints about it.
That show tries so hard to be feminist when in reality it's just sexist, I am a feminist myself and it's so bad, she got the CW Supergirl treatment, they made her exactly like Bruce Wayne when she isn't like him in the comics....
@@fulichak6499 Honestly sucks cause I heard shes a rlly cool character in the comics, but because the show is bad everyone gonna thing the character is bad in the comics too.
@@fulichak6499 It's got similar problems to supergirl but the problem I personally have is how Batwoman has main protagonist syndrome where everything she does is great and everything she doesn't do right is someone else's problems. The actual flaws they give her are not being nice to people and not finding her sister when she was a kid. Like if you watch the finale to season 1, her big bad was a giant dude with two machetes who managed to mauled down military trained armed dudes like they were nothing until she stopped him with batons.
I personally don't think Batwoman is all that interesting in the comics. However, the thing that makes her different from the rest of the Batfamily, besides being a lesbian, is her military background. She is an army brat, who was forced to leave because she was outed, and being Batwoman is kinda her way to "serve her country" (at least that's how I see it). Btw, I haven't watched the show and isn't that motivated to do so.
@Esmè Keaton He’s not in the show anymore. But he’s a musical theater performer first and foremost and he didn’t adjust super well to TV. He’s actually quite a good voice actor though.

I remember the moment when she create a secret identity and go to school for a day before she get annoyed with people and just fly away in front of everybody.
This is something I wrote a few years ago and saved. Here's a copy and paste of that. My version of Superman was the 50’s early 60’s version where about the only thing that would bother him was Kryptonite and magic. I do remember reading later that there was a feeling he was too perfect. I also watched the old TV show with George Reeves, have seen all the movies, the Supergirl movie with Helen Slater, TV shows Lois & Clark, Smallville and more recently Supergirl, and now Superman and Lois on the CW. I was born in 1947 and comics helped me learn to read. I collected comics, Action, Superman, Superboy, Batman, etc. I know I had stopped by the time I went to college in 1965 but I’m not sure exactly when. I had quite a collection including the first Supergirl, Justice League, Bizarro, even had some Disney stuff like the 1st Uncle Scrooge. Unfortunately my mom threw them all out when I went to college. Always found it interesting how writers would adjust the “magnitude” of Clark’s powers to fit the plot. Superman could handle a nuke. Yet in one episode in Lois and Clark this stupid looking weapon hurt him by working at the “atomic level”. You don’t think a nuclear bomb works at the atomic level. I had the same feeling when seeing some girl who can harness electricity hurt Supergirl with it and had the same feeling about that ax type thing in the pilot episode. I also felt that Superman had to learn an important lesson. When fighting other supers “Don’t Hold Back”. In the second Christopher Reeve move when he fights Zod he needed to learn that. I thought the fight with the bully in the luncheonette was totally screwed up. After he hits Clark in the back and sends him through that glass wall instead of just going back and standing there Clark should have charged him and tackled him. They should have had a knock down drag out fight with Clark barely winning. He had to learn to not hold back. Don’t let the other guy get the first hit. Take the bastard out. It’s an important lesson he had to learn when fighting other supers. In a review of the movie Man of Steel in Entertainment Weekly the idiot actually complained about Superman killing Zod, breaking his neck. I jumped all over that review. Pointing out that in that second Reeve movie Superman kills Zod at the end and Zod didn’t even have powers then. In a Smallville episode in a cage fight Clark kills another super Krytonian by hitting him with every thing he had. I really liked that episode. The reviewer had no idea what he was talking about. BTW, the reviewer obviously revised the review later taking that garbage out. BTW, who's more powerful Capt Marvel or Superman/Supergirl? Captain Marvel doesn't need a yellow sun. She can travel the whole cosmos unencumbered. BUT, after seeing the Capt Marvel movie and Avengers Endgame it seems to me Supeman/Supergirl are stronger and can take a hit better. At least that’s true for the 50’s early 60’s comics version. BTW, I once proposed a much more scientific explanation for why a yellow sun gives Krytonians super powers. The yellow sun acts as a catalyst allowing them to metabolize nutrients according to E=MC^2. We chemically metabolize nutrients for energy; they are nuclear powered able to turn the total mass of nutrients into total energy. They are nuclear powered and able to control that. It even would explain Kryptonite. Kryptonite totally shuts that down. It would also explain something else. They don’t really need to breath. Oxygen is needed for us to oxidize our nutrients. They are nuclear powered, no need for O2. No problem flying in space. If there are any writers of the series reading this? I give you permission to use that concept. ;-) BTW, continuing the affects of the yellow sun on him as making him nuclear powered I proposed much different plots for the 3rd and 4th Christopher Reeve movies. Think Star Wars death star or later Independence Day. Extraterrestrial Invading force, Superman can block their weapons but could not bust their force fields. He gets them to come close to the sun. Supercharged he busts their force field and destroys them. Forth movie; he likes the high. Like someone taking steroids, like someone on drugs. He keeps flying to the sun to get his high like a drug addict.
I feel like if they adapt comic Supergirl she would have the same reception as Korra from LOK, meaning she would have a lot of haters despite being a complex character but also a lot of fans
Kora is a block of wood who is only there to try to show how much better a female avatar is than the original. All while behaving and looking nearly like a stereotypical man. It’s shockingly similar to the current supergirl show. So much so that I bet it had some of the same crap writers.
@@Gumblethebear Don't treat Korra like that bro, she is not there to be a better Avatar than Aang, she is there to be the best Avatar she can be and enjoy it's, Korra's character is the negative of what Aang was that happend to be a Woman, her gender is so insignificant that as you said she act's like the stereotype of Man, and why are you saying that she being a tomboy is something bad? I honestly feel like comic Supergirl and Korra are so similar, Kara is for clark what Korra is for Aang, Both have to carry being the last sons of Krypton, as Korra and Aang have to carry being the Avatar, Korra is impetous, fierce, strong and likes being the Avatar and kick ass as much as Kara do I honestly feel Korra is more flawed and relatable and complex as a character than Aang
@@godzilla5463 I don't expect that. Just stating the reality of it. Her version of Supergirl will be forgotten a year after the show ends. It was a really lame portrayal, and again this video really nails why.
@@Knightfall182 Again you're just saying that cause I like her. You can tell me her version sucks all you want but I'm gonna continue to watch it and like it.
Agree with most of this, especially the bit about Kara being basically female Clark in this, but I resent the idea Arrowverse did anything for Ollie. He wasn't just a comedic character! If you read Grell's run, there's a lot of really interesting stuff here.
He meant Oliver was mostly one note for 8 seasons, well season 4 did something different but it's still a bad one Smallville gave us a multidimensional Oliver balance
When this show debuted, I was the perfect target audience for it. I remember watching the first episode as a teenage girl and stopping in the middle because it just seemed bad to me. I remember the shallow feminist messaging and did not like it at the time without thinking much about it. The point is: Teenage girls pick up on this even if they might not have the terminology yet to categorize it. It doesn't feel empowering but condescending. In contrast, I ate Jessica Jones up. The first superhero media I really felt l could relate to. I loved that Jessica was such a complex woman and I loved that she could be deeply flawed, unsympathetic and stubborn. But she was always interesting through it all and drove the plot. Being a teenage girl is hard and seeing that Jessica was allowed to be so flawed and complex (without people constantly pointing out that she was a woman) felt very empowering.
When I was younger I remember also finding out about super girl and I remember stopping after watching the first episode. Even though I don’t remember all of my reasons, I just remember finding it bland and boring- which really says a lot about the show. I now recently just started watching supergirl again to give it another shot (now as a teen instead of a kid), I still find Kara’s personality especially boring, she’s just a really boring character that seems to be so perfect personality wise. Also, if they wanted to make a female empowerment show they should at least not make her character arc be revolved around romantic interests (because really that’s all that’s interesting about Kara’s life so far for me) and Superman. Like you said this show just uses a lot of shallow feminist messaging while contradicting itself a lot of the time. All this show does is tell and never show really 😭 (at least in season 1 and it’s the only one I’ve watched)
19:25 I've never seen this show, but hearing Superman repeatedly saying "You're so much stronger than me. Stronger than I ever will be" to Supergirl is so embarrassing like...stop trying to tear down iconic characters to try to hype up your badly written one...
The worse thing, is that in comics she's more powerful than Superman just in firepower. She's faster, stronger, even her laser eyes are more destructive. But her lack of self control and skill is what makes Superman be able to beat her. Superman doesn't tell her about this out of fear with both Batman and Wonder Woman trying not to boost her confidence so she understands that rebelling against the League ain't a viable choice. The CW takes this and smashes it into the ground.
@@valterfara5027 She is absolutely not more powerful than Superman, and never was. And what you said about the lack of control is what makes her sometimes look more powerful, since Superman rarely uses much of his power. But any time Supes takes things even a bit serious, his power level is obviously so far above her, it is no contest. In N52, when Supergirl faced a fake Superman, he stomed her into the ground with no effort. Then, real Superman arrived and stomped the fake one even easier. When Supergirl got infected by Batman who laughs, Superman stomped both her AND infected Shazam like they were todlers the moment he took the fight seriously. Wonder Woman easily defeated Supergirl every time they fought, even without her weapons. On the other hand, she has no chances against Supeman unless she uses all her wepons and even then, it is not a favourable fight. Just because someone made a stupid statement once, it does not mean it is true. Especially since we have seen time and time again it is simply not true.
Let's just say hypothetically that the statement is true that supergirl is stronger than superman (we are talking about the show so comic books be damned cuz thats what they were aiming for anyway) then it would make sense for when they fight she easily beats him. It still is badly written dialogue to keep comparing them together just for the sake of tearing down the accomplishments of superman and "feminism" cuz women. Superman isn't even a bad guy cuz he is the best of the best humanity has to offer yet they tear him apart just for the sake of making supergirl some kind of better version of superman cuz women. I call the highest form of bullshit and fuck the writers of that show i couldn't even make it to season 1.
@@zabers5818 She is Stronger than Superman that's why when she first arrived Batman was scared of Her... And they send her to Wonder woman to craft her Skills
I had forgotten the first season was originally on CBS, though I remember the show having good writing and then going downhill, and I was puzzled why the writing went downhill. Now I know. 😜
Maybe not _good_ writing, per se, but tolerable and at least minimally enjoyable. The rest of the seasons impossible to sit through or find any enjoyment in.
Not a comics reader, but "She's just a female Superman" and "What about her being a 1.5 generation immigrant?" were issues for me immediately with Kara's/Supergirl's character so I loved finding this video with you talking about those issues. I also completely agree on the show being completely direct and in your face and dumbed down about "political" messages even when I agree with them. I can kind of be ok with it because of believing the messages need to be said, but it's just not very well done. I will say that I checked and you dropping the show at S3 E2 meant you missed a line I enjoyed in S3 E3. If you don't remember, Kara's adoptive sister Alex has a Mexican American girlfriend, Maggie, at that point in the show. Maggie was thrown out of her home as a teenager when her father learned she was a lesbian, and in this episode she confronts him and they have a cheesy fight in which he rants about racism and she proclaims pride in her sexuality and that people are more accepting now. It ends with him dropping the bomb "The only thing they hate more than a Mexicano, is a homosexual."--which is still cheesey but, yay, hints at intersectionality and at discrimination and minorities not being monoliths--and then leaving her with "The world is not different, my dear. Look, you can live any way you please. But don't ask me to witness it."--which, holy moly has complexity implications! I hate the "Pysch! Discrimination A wasn't happening here and *you're* the bigot for thinking it was, my character was concerned with issue B!" trope when it's just being dismissive about A in the A-and-B-bait-and-switch and blaming victims for being aware and speaking up, but instead of taking that reading with this dialogue I'm going for the intersectionality, greater complexity, etc. ideas because I love that Maggie's dad is calling out the world on not being accepting enough yet and even going backwards in progress instead of him embracing the simplistic optimism that gets the most emphasis in this show, that he's exhibiting fear in the neverending struggle to assimilate enough and internalized bigotry while seeking acceptability, that he's enabling division amongst minorities and the infighting and exclusion that minorities will perpetuate when they're fighting for conditional acceptance from bigoted society. And if i want to be extra generous on possible subtlety and complexity from the CW, we can circle back to the dismissive bait and switch thing and question Maggie's dad trying to claim he wasn't homophobic, he was pragmatic--we can examine how such a claim is an excuse for homophobia and still is homophobic, how it's misdirection (and even gaslighting) and victim blaming.
I just thought it was a boring show in general. It seemed like a very, very forced attempt to make a superhero show geared toward women, and it mostly fails to interest any gender at all. Now that you explain what the original Supergirl was all about, I agree with your wasted potential analysis.

11:47 Her and Barry Allen can relate to each other then. Heroes being beaten in their first fights with villains in the CW would be fine if the heroes thought about why they lost and changed their tactics, using their brains to win the rematch. Instead they just have a family or team member say "I believe in you" and that somehow gives them a power boost and the motivation to win.
I'm like "are you serious" this is how two of the most powerful heroes (one scarlett speedster and a Kryptonian demigoddess) overcome obstacles by an " I believe in you" speech. Instead of being hopeful, about truth, justice... and carrying their own weight every now and then. Also Barry and Kara would make a better pairing than Iris and Lena.
Barry especially. The number of times The Flash faces a villain that with his powers he should be able to effortlessly beat is staggering. Nearly every villain he faces short of another speedster should literally last less than a second against him.
i was so obsessed with the arrowverse when i was a young teenager and the flash was always the best one to me the writing was always so good and the special effects were too it kind of felt like they gave a high budget to the flash and spent the leftovers on the other shows 😭
@Alexander Kerensky Damn that's rough. I was going to watch Batwoman after finding out Ruby was playing but never got around to it. I've never heard of a lead actor leaving a show so early on because it was bad, so for Ruby to do that is telling. She could have easily stayed just for the cheque like many actors do, I respect her now more for keeping her dignity
That’s because in the comics, when she becomes supergirl, she is literally still a girl! She’s barely sixteen! She’s not an adult yet, so she’s supergirl, not superwoman.
Yeah, "funny"... It's in general something not great but it bothers me way more when it's elastigirl, literally a fully grown woman and mother of many children come on
At the time of its release I saw quite a few people describe Man of Steel as a Supergirl movie, and I also read the New52 Supergirl comics around the same time and it feels like a good comparison.
My thoughts while I watched this video did wander into "omg, this is what Snyder thinks Superman would be the day he wakes up and chooses not to be a benevolent god" 😂
Explains a lot, of why it wasn't just the same old thing from tv shows and literally 5 previous movies but a take and one that'd fit better into a warrior wonder woman (also superior-pacifist wonder woman is so BORING), and others, etc. If this was Zack Synder's angle, he got it right. With them talking about casting/re-casting superman, I'd rather them just hold off and make a supergirl movie non-woke and ark if henry cavill is actually not going to return or maybe only cameo somewhat.
I knew I was disappointed with Supergirl but knowing comic Supergirl have put me through the ground with this show. Honestly, the only person who have a personality in this show is Alex Danvers and Lena Luthor. This video points it out perfectly, Kara's character revolves around the men they're dating (which is expected from CW) and there's no depth to her personality. Red Kryptonite Supergirl is literally the closest thing we got to get to know her fear and anger for being a Kryptonian walking on earth. It came to a point where I resort to fanfictions of Supergirl just to get a better writing of each character and plotline. JC
Lol same. I kept up with the show weekly during season 1-3. For seasons 4 and onward i periodically drop in and beign the episodes to keep up with fanfiction stories and somewhere along the angst between Kara and Lena i just.... struggle to pick up the show
I stopped watching after season 2. I saw 3x01 when it aired and wasn't like nope can't do it. Season 2 was already such a horrible mess I only got through it for Lena Luthor and Maggie.
Devil's advocating this, the elevator is in a shaft leading to the roof, not any floors. That's kind of how elevators work (even Star Trek V knew this). At most, she would've attracted attention with her sonic boom, and THEN people may have known. But then, we're talking about a story in which putting on glasses is enough of a Rachael Leigh Cook disguise for the masses.
i also always saw Kara and Clark's relationship in the comic like a big sister younger brother dynamic. We are often reminded that Kara is older than clark, and she had completely different upbringing. The show from the start has a vibe that Kara has to stand up to Clark's legacy, which is shown time and time again by the approval of Jimmy and supe himself.
I’m honestly so impressed by how much you were able to see that a show that likes to consider itself “woke” actually has so many two dimensional female characters. It is exactly the kind of show The Boys is making fun of.
This became my problem with the show. It tried to address very complex issues, such as immigration (I mean, with literal aliens the potential was there!), but the way they went about it was just.... not nuanced at all.
Impressed by your Supergirl knowledge. Not many people really get Supergirl and often like you said treat her like a female Clark. I dont know the golden age Supegirl as well but I would say your interpretations is definitely a modern take of hers but I definitely like how it differentiates her from her cousin. Did you watch the animated movie with the Legion of Superheroes? I think that was a good example of how she doesnt feel like she fits in and shows her history with following her mothers footsteps as part of the kryptonian military guild. At first i didnt like or understand how she was depicted as so hotheaded because that wasnt how I originally remember her but in the context of what she went through and her being a essentially a soldier it makes sense to me now.
Honestly that movie felt like a giant middle finger to the CW supergirl lmao Mon-el in the cw was kara's love interest (which is inaccurate to the comics btw) he was a complete a-hole in the show and kara kept forgiving his douchiness because she "loves him" or whatever, in the movie Mon-el is an a-hole too but kara doesn't forgive him, she punches the F outta him! Not only did they say F u to that toxic relationship, they actually gave her her comic accurate love interest, Brainiac 5, i loved her personality in that movie too and they actually focused on her backstory
Dude AGREED There's so much misogyny baked into this show. Their view on women are so twisted. Kara isn't allowed to be angry, apathetic, rude, or morally ambiguous in any way. Women aren't allowed to be assholes unless they're villains or 'Dark' versions of themselves. It's always infuriating when adults think making something for kids means dumbing or simplifying things for them. Like girls are not going to get healthy messages out of this. They're just going to see that being a strong woman means being perfect and happy all the time then pining over men. It's infuriating how obvious it is that the writers consist of mostly men and women with a shit ton of internalized misogyny. They seem to think as long as you put women on screen together it means feminism is winning. I cringed so much at their woke messages I can't even watch the show anymore. The thing about the CW's reputation that makes me sad is that my favorite show aired there and it was actually critically acclaimed, called Crazy Ex Girlfriend. The title is ironic, it's a deconstruction of romantic comedy tropes, had a empathetic and realistic portrayal of mental health issues, and it even got some awards and stuff... ...buuuut people see that title, and given the kind of content the CW usually has, well, they're gonna think it's some sexist, cliche bullshit about some craaazy girl doing craaazy things, and I understand them, because that was my impression of it too before I watched it One of the funniest things for me is that the show had very, VERY low ratings, but the CW kept renewing it because it gave them a liiiittle bit of prestige lol
@@beatrizgomes4094 omg I love crazy ex girlfriend, it’s sad because not that many people really gave it a chance and that’s why it was canceled, but I listen to the soundtrack daily. Truly iconic.
@@belllllsss123 Actually, it wasn't canceled... the creators planned the story since the beginning to be a four season arc, which is maybe one of the things that makes it great, since it's not one of these shows where the story lasts way longer than it should have (like the other CW shows lol) But yeah, considering the ratings, it's still a miracle it lasted 4 seasons
In my experience the only good things from the CW were Smallville, Supernatural, Vanpire diaries (to an extent, from memory) and so far finally watching the Originals and I like that one.
The first two seasons of Arrow were great, I'd say! Season 3 is mediocre, season 4 was so terrible, it was almost Game of Thrones' season 8 levels of disaster it made me want to stop watching the show. Years later, I actually got to watch season 5 after some good recomendations and it was actually good. It almost washed the awful taste of the previous season out of my mouth. Haven't watched S6, S7 and S8 yet...
@@Neathyr season 6 was ok.. but either season 6 or 7 had a real stupid “civil war” mini storyline between the team. Haven’t watched season 8 yet. But you’re right.
Such great points! Smallville was the shit when I was growing up! I remember my whole family was so enthralled by that show and we kept up as long as we would when we actually had cable or could rent the seasons somewhere. Supernatural will always be one of my favorites despite the sometimes sporadic or repetitive plot lines (Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins really carried the show), and Vampire Dairies I haven't finished but it's strangely good and bad at the same time lol. I'm captivated even though I know how stupid it was. Arrow was actually really dope too cause it kicked off the television based superhero genre before Marvel really got into the game. Once Dare Devil and the other Marvel shows came out, they left these potentially great CW adaptations of the DCU in the dust, in every way possible.
Honestly, it would have been far more interesting to meet teenage Supergirl from the moment she crashes on earth. Could have been like on Arrow where we get flashbacks of her learning about human culture, life lessons, her trauma of krypton and better analyze why she didn't immediately follow Clark's footsteps. I remember Clark wanted her to have a normal childhood, but I can't remember them explaining why she chooses to sit back and just act like a normal human as an adult. Seems like she she should have jumped in and helped before her sister was in danger. They could have given more development to her relationships she has at the start of the series. I remember watching Superman/Batman: Apocalypse and being like, oh this Kara is much more interesting. They even give an explanation to why she could potentially surpass Superman in power. In the show, she beats him because she's the protagonist.
And its such a shame that in trying to make a strong female centered show they stripped her of EVERYTHING that makes her different from Clark and made her a gender swapped Clark

Or Steel.
@@Mecharnie_Dobbs The character wasn't really the problem. It's the way The CW treated her.
Yeah the crew of Supergirl is sexist and homophobe. No doubt about it
Melissa Benoist is such a good actress and I LOVE her as Supergirl and I despise how CW just shat all over both Kara and Melissas potential.

100% correct.
So, what the video said?
The video covers this. I see a few difficulties going with this:
Smallville actually did supergirl a bit of justice. She was extremely cold and alien, and it took her a long time to come to terms with humanity.
Smallville is by far the best live action adaptation of Superman and characters like Lex and Kara, they did the characters justice and made them complex.
Also female rage is something that is never covered well, and Supergirl could've been the perfect character to explore that side of womanhood!

All the arrowverse shows have the problem of the protagonists almost constantly failing in everything until the season finale.

Facts
it's honestly the opposite lmao.
Sounds like Ryan George's pitch meeting 🤣🤣🤣

Season one had 20% woke content, which make it barely tolerable. They cranked it up to 80% by the season 2, and 100% woke in the following seasons.

Season 1 was really cringy. I'm not surprised it bled all it's ratings out and CBS canned it. The dialogue was horrific!

Cue the green lantern, aquaman, and cyclops syndrome
Well the Supergirl on Smallville was introduced first and I would say that was an accurate portrayal of Supergirl.
These shows should have never been made
Even before I knew nothing about the comic Supergirl, my favorite episode was always the one where she was exposed to Red Kryptonite - she just seemed so much more badass and down-to-earth than the innocent, ever cheerful supergirl we got
This is why Smallville, despite its early 2000’s flaws and cheese, has the best character developments and that includes Supergirl!!
Yes, exactly. Smallville had it's flaws, but it still had a consistant level of heart and soul throughout. and had the best character development including Supergirl. We just maybe should have seen her a little more. Like helping Clark with the Kandorians in season 9. Laura is forever my Supergirl.
Those middle seasons were pretty bad though. I cared nothing for the Lana and Lex together drama.

what pisses me off the most about the panic attack scene was that i too was excited. when i was in hs i had a lot of panic attacks, and they got so bad that i couldn’t sit in class anymore and was pulled out. the worst part of panic attacks, is that when you’re in public, there are consequences to having them, and it’s usually just people truly caring about you, but also. it’s distracting. my teachers weren’t happy to tell me i couldn’t be in a classroom anymore, but it was the best thing for me, and for the other kids too. i went back after that year!!! but they should have given her real world consequences bc… that’s what makes people brave enough to get true help sometimes. and bc realistically, not everyone was nice about me distracting everyone. she would have gotten in trouble, and exploring that guilt would have been really amazing for those of us who actually have panic disorder and anxiety.

This Comic book version of Super girl sounds like a female watered-down version of zod.
She kinda seems like the korra to Superman’s aang, as oppose to the show just making her a human golden retriever
Yes! That's what I thought.

When did this happen?
@@danielrichards9973 That's in the comics, it's from around 2006 IIRC
I give you permission to use that concept. ;-)
BTW, continuing the affects of the yellow sun on him as making him nuclear powered I proposed much different plots for the 3rd and 4th Christopher Reeve movies.
Comic book Supergirl sounds amazing. I want this show/movie.

I honestly feel like comic Supergirl and Korra are so similar, Kara is for clark what Korra is for Aang, Both have to carry being the last sons of Krypton, as Korra and Aang have to carry being the Avatar, Korra is impetous, fierce, strong and likes being the Avatar and kick ass as much as Kara do

Agree with most of this, especially the bit about Kara being basically female Clark in this, but I resent the idea Arrowverse did anything for Ollie. He wasn't just a comedic character! If you read Grell's run, there's a lot of really interesting stuff here.
He meant Oliver was mostly one note for 8 seasons, well season 4 did something different but it's still a bad one
Smallville gave us a multidimensional Oliver balance
JJ is just perfection.

I've never seen this show, but hearing Superman repeatedly saying "You're so much stronger than me.
Especially since we have seen time and time again it is simply not true.
time to deal with DC purists/elitists, woop woop!

@Chi
I thought the first few episodes had decent writing. It got substantially worse later on though.
It was always bad writing. tried too hard to be a feminist show from the start.
A lot of scenes mentioned in the video are from Season 1, so, not a good writing from the start

That I believe in you line kills me😂
I'm like "are you serious" this is how two of the most powerful heroes (one scarlett speedster and a Kryptonian demigoddess) overcome obstacles by an " I believe in you" speech. Instead of being hopeful, about truth, justice... and carrying their own weight every now and then.
Also Barry and Kara would make a better pairing than Iris and Lena.

But then, we're talking about a story in which putting on glasses is enough of a Rachael Leigh Cook disguise for the masses.

Not only did they say F u to that toxic relationship, they actually gave her her comic accurate love interest, Brainiac 5, i loved her personality in that movie too and they actually focused on her backstory

There's so much misogyny baked into this show.

Ohhhh wow I try thought it was just me. While watching this show, I kept thinking to myself that she is not supposed to be this nice.
And its such a shame that in trying to make a strong female centered show they stripped her of EVERYTHING that makes her different from Clark and made her a gender swapped Clark
