@implicitly pretentious could you do a video where you talk about the M.C.U as a whole and what it meant to fans & also why fans like myself still feel empty and void over a year after Endgame happened???
I really wish endgame handled Thor’s trauma in the similar manner as Logan did. I understand Logan was R rated so they could get away with more and make it darker than endgame. But Logan is the only X-men movie I’ve watched in many many years, meanwhile I’ve seen almost all of the MCU movies, and even still I was able to connect with Logan and really understand his pain, while Thor’s seemed corny and unauthentic
Totally agree. We get more time spent with Black Widow and Cap for dealing with trauma genuinely for the most part, but I would’ve liked to see Thor face the worst parts of himself and find the strength to forgive himself. I think that could’ve been so powerful.
Honestly with Thor it felt more pathetic, which honestly pisses me when I see him compared to before. An arrogant and mighty warrior, turned into THE most cheapest beer I've ever seen. Pathetic.
Thor lost his father, mother, sister, brother, his best friend, his homeland. Most of Asgard got killed by Thanos and his army. Later on, around half of what was left of the Asgardians blipped. If there is someone who should be suffering from the most trauma, it's Thor. Even Wanda's story isn't nearly as sad and painful as Thor's. This man deserved way more spotlight when it comes to his pain...
This film is unadulterated pain. I don't think I have ever loved a film that hurt me this way so much. I felt I was paying the tab for 17 years of heroics and sense of wonder. In 2000, Logan was complaining about black leather suits while the super-powered team took off in their passenger Blackbird. In 2017, there's only dust and bad dreams. Now who is going to take care of the kids?
I always laugh at the bit of you bringing trauma frequently, but as someone who have delt with it, your videos are the perfect way to articulate my process. This video specially is very meaningful, because it wasn't until I was able to actually deal with my trauma in therapy that I started healing
Aww I was a bit worried that people would grow tired of me talking about, so it's so relieving to hear that it still has a positive effect. So thank you!
Dear Mr Implicitly Pretentious, I’ve been a subscriber for a while now and at some point I was like wow he’s still making videos about trauma, like that was a bad thing. But more and more and I find myself drawing from your videos and what i’ve learned in them to explain things happing in my life. To skip over the entire omg this is how your work has affected me and get to my point, i realized that your body of work about trauma, that you have created by creating these videos, is the best out there. in fact, i haven’t seen any like it and I feel now that you’ve reached this video you’ve somehow crossed some threshold where you actually have a body of work I can now tell people to go watch if they want to learn about trauma and want to get educated on that in a way related to the art they consume. i don’t know if that makes sense but i feel like at this point in time we no longer have one book by one artist that defines them. we don’t talk about one movie, or episode, or youtube video, or book, as much as the bodies of work an artist creates in pursuit of different topics and uve somehow reached that point in my eyes. i love you and wish you the best
Holy cow, Thank you so much! I thought people would be getting tired of me talking about trauma, especially when I haven't been citing new sources for these essays, but not only am I incredibly flattered, but you've opened my eyes to understanding the relevance of discussing it in general and the wider value of connecting it to these characters and films! :)
Logan in this is someone who has suffered and lost so much that he can't move forward and simply wants to die so his pain can over as he has nothing to live for anymore. Charles and Laura help him reconnect with his humanity showing him the good parts of his life
I never really understood why you made so many videos on trauma but I’ve slowly grown to appreciate it. I think it’s funny and weird how your videos have become more and more relevant to me as more and more random chaotic ruptures have happened in my life. I’m currently in college, and your videos really help me understand and give meaning to experiences where at times I’m not able to really make sense of. It’s honestly been really harsh, but your videos help me add some form of vulnerability to these harsh experiences and have helped me mature, especially in times where I may not have any form of guidance but my own. So thank you, and I hope you recognize how important your work is.
Oh wow thank you so much! I hope you feel better and often I make these videos in isolation so it means a lot to me to hear that they have a positive effect on people! :)
If there's one thing I am liking from more risky takes on past material, it's the fact that many creators who tend to bring their own flare to a piece of work are now embracing the idea of the old, disheveled, broken, and struggling hero who must search through the rubble of his past, to discover the answer in his present to discover how to achieve the rebirth of his future. Logan, Thor in End Game, Luke Skywalker, and Peter B. Parker. Nostalgia can be a powerful thing, and as a result, many may see this takes as insulting to their childhoods, or proof that these new stories "don't get it", but these tales set far after the years of where we left our heroes have always been a staple of the hero's journey since stories began. From Beowulf, to Jason, to Hercules, to King Arthur, and as Joseph Campbell wrote, it is a classic theme of many heroes that as time goes on, they suffer new and even more harsh struggles due to a world that evolves around them and in many ways beats them into submission to the point where everything they fought for in the past is put into question, and they wonder whether or not they were on the winning side in the first place, or if the world is the one that proved too much for them. Tragic heroes often fall thanks to their own hubris, neglect, and shortsightedness. Being drunk on their own past and buying too much into their own legends, but bittersweet ones can be just as powerful showing that even if that have failed, that doesn't mean their is still time to allow themselves to be reborn and to bring with them the elixir of knowledge to not just their fellow warriors, but also the entire world around them to make it a better place before they move on into the next realm. As the Hero With a Thousand Faces said, it is not a resurrection of past mentalities that conquers death, nor is it a revival of different parts of flawed systems that conquers death. It is only BIRTH that can conquer DEATH. A transformation of consciousness that is the ultimate victory for the classic hero. I would take a bitter, nihilistic, and broken shell of a hero who learns to overcome their depression, trauma, and failures over a person who ends their journey doing the same thing we day decades ago before going out. It makes them seem more enduring, and powerful by the time their journey is over and it has way more to say about the human condition and what really happens to people when they get older. It is not a bad thing to see a beloved character get something less than a happy ending, as that is what many classic and great storytellers do to say as much as they can about what a hero really is. Also, IP, are we ever going to get an Avatar: The Last Airbender video? Many are talking about it again because the whole series is on Netflix now! And also, I think if it is your thing, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power would also be an ideal new story for you right now. The final season came out last week and needless to say, this reboot did not disappoint!
I'd like to do Zukos arc at some point, or general themes of modernity, but editing and writing for shows is a pain, so if it was to happen, it would be way into the future
One of the few films that can almost make me cry with everything that’s been going on watching this film 🎞 today will make me cry . This film and good will hunting and avengers endgame are male titanic films .
I'm generally not an emotional type of person, but this specific video of yours really grabbed me in a way I didn't expect, it made me think about your name that I originally thought was ironic, then silly, but it's not. It's actually sincere in a way few things are on youtube and I just want to say I really appreciate your work and hope you keep it up.
Excellent analysis. This is one of my favourite movies and I relate really heavily to this portrayal of the character. Watching it was like watching my own responses to trauma play out in someone else. This video sums it up really nicely. To put it into a slightly different context, I'd describe Logan in the 2017 movie as someone with a Fearful-Avoidant attachment style, on top of PTSD from past trauma that he can't remember. That's what really impressed me about the movie - that description fits me as well, and I think they nailed his reactions and behavioural patterns in the film. I want to rewatch it but it's always a hard one to sit through. I feel so incredibly sad at the final scene lol. I like the more positive spin you put on the ending here, though. I'm just typing into the abyss at 3am at this point, but to sum it up - great vid, subscribed :D
Logan despite it flaws helped me have a taste of a slighty different and emotionally explorative super hero movie that lingered on the darkness of hero movies
God you are so fantastic. I love that you speak so much about trauma. It needs to talked about. Somehow somewhere your reaching people like us who are made up of our traumatic experiences. Seeing this and having someone understands us speaks volumes. Would love to see you do a video essay over Tree of Life. That film resonates so much with me having lost a brother and grew up with the same parenting styles in the film. The trauma shaped me into who I am. The film represents it so beautiful. And Terrence Malick is fantastic behind the camera.
Logan is my favorite superhero movie and almost of all time. I honestly think Wolverine is the best character in Marvel movies in general. Even more so then thanos or Iron man.

Sir, your content is simply awesome. I keep watching your essays, and each one (although touching on the main topic of trauma) reveals more layers about character development and the importance, I believe, of addressing and working through what strength trauma gives us. Have you considered reaching out to Jordan Peterson to review your material? He delves into topics of Jungian analysis and the Hero's Journey (Joseph Campbell). It maybe be a thing that has already been asked of you, but the thought popped into my head. Again, solid material, although I've been a longtime subscriber, with two kids, a full-time job, and a wife who is an ER nurse, it's tough to keep up with new uploads. Keep up the great work!
For me this film is just soooooooooooooooo sad. I watch it and think every second "nonononono how I love them they don't deserve this ending nooooooooo" I've loved this characters since childhood and watching them die so pitifully breaks my heart I think it's a brilliant movie But it's hard to watch.
