- So this is a complete remake of my old "The Captain America trilogy is beautiful video essay", so it can complete the trio of MCU videos of Endgame, Iron Man and now Cap.

Cap holding on to the past and Stark holding on to the future is a duality that I never noticed before.
Beastinvader They call Tony “the futurist” at one point in Civil War.
Beastinvader I’d recommend Avengers Earth Mightiest Heroes show if you wanna see more of how Tony is the futurist and how his good intentions are sometimes can be turned to his worst. Both cap and Tony talks about that quality and an entire 1 or 2 episodes are dedicated to that.
Also Ultron is handled almost perfectly even with Tony’s small but important contributions.
The hope vs fear thing is something I pointed out in a different video a couple of years ago ( was more focused on the hope v fear thing than the past v future). Glad to see I'm not the only one that noticed.
Definitely the parallel with their "hearts" was something cool that I had not noticed before.
"the man out of time" vs "the futurist" it was right there lol Steve was always seeking something from his past to cling to (Peggy and/or Bucky) whereas Tony consistently thought about and planned harder than anyone to prepare for the future.
MCUs Captain America is what Henry Cavills Superman should have been, surrounded by a negative world but still retains his hope and positive outlook on life
They wasted Henry Cavill.
Hope they get it right in the future and make the character right

Sorry, you're attempting to defend Man of Steel, and you're using the description "boring" as a pejorative? Are you trying to shoot yourself in the foot?

The planes are on autopilot to major cities. Steve is not Tony, he's not a mechanical genius. Taking the plane back into manual and steering the entire way is the only option which he has available to him.

Yes he did. A lot. He never changed his moral compass, but he changed his political ideologies substantially. He does a complete 180 from being the governments boy scout to fighting for complete individual freedom against corrupt government agencies.

No. He's still responsible for the hundreds of millions of deaths in Man of Steel. Being suicidal and deciding to sacrifice himself instead of just giving the spear instead of Wonder Woman doesn't redeem his actions. Superman is never given redemption or forgiveness in Justice League, the film just pretends Superman was always good and ignores every single mistake he ever made in his previous 2 films. Which is one of the only redeeming aspects of that film for me, that it's more interested in presenting a faithful adaptation of the character then worrying about irrelevant continuity details, but that just makes his previous 2 films even worse because they were entirely pointless.

He doesn't need to. The audience can figure that out as they're shocked that Steve lied to Tony. They don't need the central theme forced down their throat, because they're not that stupid. And the entire point of the comment you're replying to is that Superman should not be like this. Superman should not be corrupted for no thematic reason whatsoever. Snyder never uses his cultural vandalism of this pop culture icon to say anything, it's just angst for the sake of angst. And he cannot even fail to "stay good in this world", because he was never good to begin with. He became a hero for selfish reasons thanks to some dodgy philosophical ideas from his parents, and cares so little for human life that he kills hundreds of millions of people. Superman is a threat, not a hero.

No. He is very clearly the protagonist of the film, and Tony is very clearly the antagonist. Just because he does some immoral things, and Tony is presented as sympathetic, does not mean the film ever calls his position wrong in any capacity, because it always explicitly endorses his actions as correct up until his lie is revealed.

Who are we talking about?

That's depressing. Is that what you really think a super hero is supposed to stand for? Super heroes are idealistic, power fantasies, givers of agency to an audience which lacks it. They are as far away from compromises as you can get. And notice how Tony's legacy comes from placing the interests of the greater good over his family? Aka, not choosing to compromise and 100% dedicating himself to being a hero and sacrificing himself. Tony in Civil War is a broken Tony, it's the lowest his character ever gets besides at the start of Endgame. It is in no way remotely close to a "true hero".

He never needs to. He apologised for the only thing he did wrong, lying to Tony. That's the only mistake cap makes in the story. You've failed to identify any of his mistakes whatsoever.

And then he's fired from the Avengers, and can't save people without breaking the law. What a great decision. The conflict of Civil War is freedom v oversight, the same one from Winter Soldier. Under the accords Cap does not have the freedom to decline orders from this UN panel, that's the entire point.

That last time he did that, he ended up working for Hydra. And General Ross is gonna turn out to be Red Hulk eventually. So I'm pretty sure Steve made the right move.
Another thing about Steve's vs Tony's genesis is that Steve volunteered while Stark is kidnapped. Steve chose to be what he became, while Tony has no option but to escape from there. Action vs Reaction. God, Civil War is so good.
And it's so cool how that was flipped in Civil War. Tony decided to take the initiative and willingly entered a fight for the future whereas Steve is trying to figure out how to adapt or whether to double down on his previous circumstances. But that decision was forced upon him.

One thing I didn't see you mention was the endings of all the movies.
At the end of TFA, Steve sacrifices himself to save the world. At the end of TWS, Steve sacrifices himself to save a friend. And at the end of CW, Steve sacrifices his friendship with Tony to save Bucky.
What's so interesting about the CA trilogy is Steve never really wins. He always does what's right, but by doing that he lost his past, almost lost his life, and lost the family that was The Avengers. As you said, his character is all about perseverance, and I think all of his movies ending with him losing something extremely important to him, or to anyone, is what makes his character so compelling and inspiring.
So how did you feel about Captain America's ending in Endgame? About his choice?
@@Spartain14 personally I think it's a good end to his arc. After a lifetime of selflessness and sacrifice he ended up taking something from the person he least expected: Tony Stark. He chided Tony for being a selfish man when they first met only to indulge in a selfish act at the end of his journey and enjoy his own life rather than return to duty. He even says he got the idea from Tony. But I don't think selfishness in this case is a bad thing because Steve truly earned it
@@Spartain14 I saw it opening night with friends, and the ending was the only time I've ever full on cried in front of people. I relate to Cap a lot, and I know how it feels to sacrifice a lot for others. Cap lost his past, his family, his friends, everything, and even after the snap he still continued to dedicate his life to helping others in any way he can, such as group therapy sessions. The way I see it, his ending was essentially his reward for sacrificing everything he ever had, and I was very happy that he got the happy ending he deserved.
People say it's out of character, which I can kind of see why, but if you put yourself in his shoes it makes sense. After years of sacrificing his happiness, he finally decided to let himself be happy for once
This is what made his ending in Endgame so emotional and perfect. Beautiful arc.
How do you think his self-sacrifice squares with his choice in the ending of Avengers Endgame?
Out of all of the Avengers, Captain America was always my favorite, even with how “square” he always seemed. What the Russo’s and Chris Evans as a whole did to this character made me love Cap even more. If the avengers had a backbone, cap would be that backbone

The Captain America trilogy is so far the best trilogy in the MCU. It's the only trilogy that got progressively better as it went on!
Iron Man trilogy is better. Iron Man 2 & 3 are ten thousand times better movies than anything from Captain America's trilogy.

Buckey is a symbol of post-modernity and subjectivism. From Roger's perspective, he's a law abiding citizen, a fellow soldier, and a good friend. But from the world's perspective, he's a terrorist, a mercenary, and a danger to society.

Cpt America is a classic story of stoicism. Tradition, principles, beliefs... Those were his strengths. "We don't need a perfect soldier, we need a good man."
His sense of skeptism is not against what he sees in the new society, it's what he experienced in the old. He knows how much society has changed in the new, he realises how much the old social values were still valid. That's why it was so fundamentally different from Ironman's sense of revolution.

I’m so glad that other people can see how deep cap actually is as a character. He’s my favorite super hero for these reasons and he’s like a person I think everyone should want to be like. Not a perfect soldier or perfect anything but a good person

Since he doesn’t always show much emotion, doesn’t always talk about himself, hides his problems and personal issue to the world unlike some other characters (like Chris said, “Cap doesn’t ‘bleed’ on other people), people underestimate the depth because sometimes they can’t see past the subtlety

Ive argued with many people that Captain America is not a blind patriot. You summed everything up nicely. As a multi deployed veteran, I really connected with these three movies because they summarized a lot of my personal conflicts as well. This is a great trilogy because as you said, it is all about a person who has invested deeply in a belief system coming to terms with his place in an ever changing world but also staying true to the essence of his beliefs, or himself as a person. At last as far as I see it ;). Well done video man!
Cap is internationally venerated IRL because he is what America bills itself as being, and he opposes America when they don't line up with that ideal

I think we need to stop calling it the Avengers Quadrilogy, it just sounds funny. I think the Avengers Anthology sounds better, and it means the same thing
A parallel that I've noticed between Tony and Cap, that defines them, is that as one commenter pointed out Tony never got a say in anything to do with his life until his early to mid thirties whereas Cap was always stepping forward. As well, Tony never looks to his past because aside from it being too painful, it's also too vague. Steve, opposingly, derives much if not all of who he is from his past while he cautiously navigates the present and future (vs Tony thrusting light years into the future). You could almost say that Tony, someone who spent his life running from his past resented that part of Steve that felt he had a past that he loved enough to cling to. Steve, loving his past and wanting nothing more than to go back saw Tony and his need to rush into things and the "future" as foolhardy. Caution vs Reckless. As well, Cap sees Tony as who he might have turned into (personality wise)had he not been raised when and how he was and Tony sees Cap as the man he thinks his father wanted him to be. Tony was always afraid he'd never live up to expectations set by his dad so he never stepped up and just let someone else do the work while he got to play with his toys Vs Steve who was all too ready to accept the responsibility of what he considered doing the right thing. So many parallels!!
That's why I had problems with Tony (and the people who said he was a flawed paragon and saint) and why I was Team Cap all the way. Almost everything Tony did in the ensemble movies revolved around fear, guilt, loneliness and shame. Almost everything Cap did revolved around integrity, loyalty, respect, realism, caring for other people and doing things for other people even though they might have passed, or be in trouble that would spill over onto him and bravery.
The Captain America trilogy of movies were all great film's, that's a claim that even Iron Man doesn't have.
When the MCU was in its infancy and Captain America was announced, I remember saying to my wife “How on earth are they going to make this stars and stripes symbol of American WW2 propaganda relevant to modern audiences?”
They did it by casting the perfect actor, giving him a meaningful and well written character arc, and allowing plenty of time for his journey to unfold. They didn’t rush things, the MCU gives characters and plot lines time to exist and breathe before moving the story along.
Pretty much the exact opposite of, and explains why the DCEU has disappointed me so badly.
I knew of but hardly cared about Cap, Iron Man and Thor. My childhood heroes were Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman (and Spiderman and the Hulk). But DC screwed the DCEU versions of Supes and Batman by rushing, rather than giving characters time to grow. Such a shame :-(
At least I’ve got the Nolan Batman movies, and Wonder Woman.

It’s surprising looking back and seeing how many villains there actually were in this trilogy. Red skull, Armim Zola, Batroc the Leaper, Winter Solider, Alexander Pierce, Jasper Sitwell, Crossbones, Baron Zemo and technically even iron man, black Panther, Spider-Man, black widow, war machine and vision. Oh and don’t forget the entire legion of hydra

Oh my god, you have the words to my reasons why Cap is my favorite avenger. I never knew, what fascinated me about him that much. But as I was listening to you, I realised, it's exactly this. Thank you.

Nicely done. I would like to add that because of his strong traditionalism, Cap is the steady fulcrum, the moral gold standard perhaps, from which every other Marvel character is measured. He demonstrates that a principled perseverence can prevent tyranny where submission for the sake of social convenience could not. He was such an important character for the MCU that I'm slightly concerned that they will lose their way without him at the center. Time will tell.
Slightly concerned? Undeniably it's downhill from here.

What I appreciate in Endgame in regards to Captain America is that we get to fully realize and appreciate his evolution when he's pitted against himself from earlier in his journey. There's an exasperation with his younger self beautifully executed from the line "I can do this all day." He acknowledges how frustrating his rigid idealism meant he was often solving problems "harder" instead of "smarter." Though also a nod to the controversial recent Captain America comics, the fact that older Cap chooses to say "Hail Hydra" to get the tesseract versus taking on the entire elevator of armed guards shows yet more growth. He's well aware these are the "bad guys" but he has more important shit to do, and the deception is just faster and more efficient.

The Captain America Trilogy is THE best superhero trilogy.
It's the most complete, it's the most consistent, it has a compelling overarching story, and most importantly, it doesn't fail in the end (looking at you Dark Knight trilogy).

They absolutely nailed Captain America. Watching these movies reminded me of everything that I loved about my Grandfather. I mean I often cry at movies, but I cried almost all through these movies because I was thinking of him.

That was a brilliant video. I also think that ultimately it was still quite a tragic arc for Captain America by the end, but the writers (and fans) chose for him to go out with a good blast of strength showing all his potential at the same time, sociologically quite a cute way to end an idea aha

I just realized. Cap always represented the right way to move forward. To be the product of future science and past ideas. Just as red skull degraded from the serum and cap became better, the role of science was to make them stronger and to magnify the values they hold.

what i love the most about steve is that he IS stubborn, but he stays faithful to his values, despite everything he saw in the war and went through in his private life, he never lost hope in humanity or gave up on himself, it's kind of a unrealistic inspiration for me, because irl there's a belief that no one can physically and mentally endure the nightmare of carrying that weight of responsability and honor, but every time things get too hard and impossible for me, the whole capitan america story and its beautiful ending, of him finally getting to live the life he sacrificed, it makes me happy and hopeful that i can get out of a dark place

I’m an old guy, so maybe I can’t absorb ideas as quickly as I used to, but I think your future essays could be improved if you took more time explaining your theories (and at a slower pace).

This is such a beautiful and well made video of one of my favourite Marvel superheroes. It's actually funny because I was never the biggest fan of Captain America before the MCU. I always found him to be annoying. I hated his boyscout personality. I never found him interesting. He was basically just Marvel's Superman and nothing more.
That all changed when I saw Captain America The First Avenger. This film was such a perfect origin story for Cap. We saw how everything that he stood for started in this film. His friendship with Bucky. His relationship with Peggy. His devotion to his country and just his good will as a human being. The part where Steve jumps on a dummy grenade in the camp full of army buddies that pick on him for being too small and the scene of Dr Abraham Erskine's observation of him really says it all.
Cap was fine in the first Avengers film but it was really The Winter Soldier that solidified him as not only my favorite Avenger and my favorite main hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but as one of my favorite superheros of all time in general. I love how everything that he stood for in this film and in Civil War was tested. His friendship and loyalty to Bucky. His friendship and loyalty to Tony Stark/Iron Man. His loyalty to SHIELD and the Avengers. Peggy dying of old age and leaving him and then losing half of his friends to Thanos in Infinity War before bringing them all back in Endgame and finally getting the happy ending that he deserved after he had been through so much shit for so long. That is the story of Steve Rogers/Captain America folks. And to think. I used to hate the guy and I used to find him to be annoying.

I think I remember watching your first video and thinking it was great. Don't see the need for remaking it with this one, but alright. I'm a Captain America fan, so I'm all for putting his stories out into the universe a second time.
