Ever since the Werewolf by Night trailer dropped, Michael Giacchino's directorial foray into the MCU has been at the top of my must-see list. Everything about this project seemed so refreshing, the shot in the arm a stagnating Marvel Cinematic Universe DESPERATELY needed, all while opening up a whole new realm by way of Monsters in the MCU! Sure enough, Werewolf by Night is My FAVORITE MCU Movie in YEARS! Michael Giacchino arrives as one of the MCU’s BEST filmmakers with a roaring, monstrous TRIUMPH that perfectly captures the kind of classic horror thrills we all love in things like Hammer Horror and the Universal Monsters classic movies. Werewolf by Night is a total throwback, unashamedly so, from its black-and-white grainy aesthetic to Giacchino’s evocative score that simultaneously could only have come from him, and that’s kind of the best thing about it: it stands on its own. It’s not only a singular entry in the MCU, it oozes with directorial vision, and it features EASILY the best new character in all of Phase 4 by way of Gael Garcia Bernal’s Jack Russell. For whatever issues you may have with Phase 4 - believe me, I sympathize - with Werewolf by Night, you HAVE to check it out. You won’t be disappointed, because Giacchino went full BEAST MODE once he got into the director’s chair. Werewolf by Night is the BEST. Werewolf by Night has already become a top 5 favorite MCU project, but will be one of the MCU movies I revisit the most for its creativity, surehanded direction, originality, and characters. Needless to say, I can't wait for more Werewolf by Night , Marvel Special Presentations look to be the future of the MCU, and I DEFINITELY can't wait for Mahershala Ali Blade. Griffin (@griffschiller) gives you his Werewolf by Night review and explains why Werewolf by Night is perfect, why Werewolf by Night is a masterpiece, how Werewolf by Night saved MCU Phase four, and why Werewolf by Night is the best marvel movie. Enjoy this Werewolf by Night video essay, Werewolf by Night analysis, and Werewolf by Night explained!

I loved this special, it felt enough like the MCU with Man-Thing and the last fight scene to not feel alienating, but it felt different enough to feel fresh and new, I loved the cheesy acting, the black and white grading, how the Werewolf costume looks straight out of a 40’s or 50’s horror movie, I really hope we get more experimental special presentations like this in the future

Considering that both Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night are completely standalone projects, they both end up being the actual hits of this year for the MCU as well as Phase 4 entirely.
In fairness, Ms. Marvel & She-Hulk both do need connections with other established MCU characters (Kamala idolizes Captain Marvel & She-Hulk is a superhuman law show, so it's not surprising it's a cameo fest, especially when it also tends to happen in the She-Hulk stories).
Nevertheless, the new heroes: the Moon Knight system, Layla, Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, and Elsa Bloodstone had among the best first impressions of the new heroes in Phase 4.
Funny thing is both them & the supernatural world of the MCU are more intriguing than the main story arc that's the multiverse of the Multiverse Saga (Phase 4-6) lol
Moon Knight & Man-Thing are my big favs of the new characters in Phase 4 by far

Contrary to many people’s thoughts, I think the limited runtime was actually also one of its greatest strengths after a further look. It gave the special an opportunity to be more concise and to-the-point without dragging things out which made for a much cleaner storytelling. It really was a simple story that they were telling so the runtime was more than serviceable for what they were trying to achieve. If anything, they could’ve added longer stretches of fight scenes to beef up the runtime a bit but nothing that adds to the plot substantially

Ofc while there are some thematic similarities with Werewolf & The Hulk, I truly believe the casting of Gael is what makes the character so unique and cannot be underemphasized. From a directorial approach, it's such efficient storytelling to use a casting choice as a way to inform the audience of a character. This is inclusion servicing the story & I love it. Gael is not physically imposing, he has an accent & he is foreign. This perfectly encapsulates Jack as he tries to fit in but constantly aware that people will always be aware of his differences. The skull face paint, symbolizing the "mask" that he wears to try and fit in as well as honoring his (as well as the actor since he is mexican) ancestors. On a thematic level it further informs the audience of the character visually, in Dia De Los Muertos tradition the skull makeup means "in death we are all equals". Lastly, Gael is most well known for his incredibly intimate performances so it is the director understanding that monsters dont exist for the sake of scaring us, they exist as a manifestation of our internal fears & insecurities. So, why does Jack not like to transform? It's not simply because he does not want to hurt people it's because (according to Michael's choices as a director) when he changes he is revealing the most intimate side of himself the part he keeps locked away because he is afraid of how others treat him for being different.

I think there has to be a larger discussion around format with phase 4. Now that we have 4 different formats (films, shorts, specials, tv series) I much prefer the special. It felt like I picked up a single issue of a comic. Completely self-contained and disconnected from everything else. Just one issue that felt stylized to the character, then dip out. If we never see Jack Russell again that's okay because it was just that one special. Granted I'd love to see some Midnight Sons action, but I'm okay if we don't. Not every character needs to be in a dozen projects. Here's to hoping that Werewolf by Night was the first of many fun specials.

Whoever played that older lady is an AWESOME actor and I really hope she starts getting a lot more work after this and I start seeing her in more stuff because she just does a lot of little things like with her mannerisms and how she talks that I thought were really unique/cool and full of personality and she just made a lot of other subtle acting choices (physically with her body and vocally with how she delivered some of her lines.) that were just different (in a good way) than what the vast majority of actors would've done or chosen to do. Idk, I just wanted to give her some props on here real quick because everybody is talking about the main characters performance (which was also great), but nobody is mentioning her even though she kind of low-key (as much as I hate saying that unironically because I'm not 12 or a douche) acted circles around everybody else, but did it in a very subtle way that I just think most ppl didn't notice.

You have the main Avengers level stuff
(Captain America, Dr Strange, Hulks Movie, The Thunderbolts Fantastic 4, The Eternals)
    The street level stuff
(Spiderman Dare Devil, Echo, Kate Bishop, Jessica Jones)
then the supernatural side that's building most likely to a version of the Midnight Suns
(Moon Knight, Warewolf By Night, Blade, Black Knight, Bloodstone, Man-Thing, Eventually Ghost Rider)
these will all have big meetups between their own sections but will all eventually meetup in Avengers 5 and 6.

I want more than just Werewolf by night and Elsa Bloodstone, I want more of Man-thing too, he's been around Marvel since 1971, and this film put a mark on the reputation of that character. Since they made this movie, this can be a set up to make a team from Marvel comics called "The Midnight Sons" that features Dr. Strange, Blade, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Man-Thing, Werewolf by night, Elsa Bloodstone, Wong, Iron Fist, Scarlet Spider, and Dr. VooDoo, some more people that they can add to this list would be Daredevil, The Punisher, and Elctra to make it even more fun. This film honestly gave me some hope that there still is a chance for it to go in the right direction, but due to the most recent products that they made and my lack of faith in them anymore, I don't think that is going to happen.

As someone who isn't a fan of horror movies, I find myself warming up nicely to the werewolf movies -- much of the cause being this special movie. I'd like to see more horror movies in the MCU, made by diverse voices and filmmakers with visions.
I also want to see more werewolf movies be made. For every werewolf movie you see out there, some twenty vampire and zombie movies will be there vying for attention. And of all those werewolf movies, three-quarters of them are either gory enough to not be enjoyable (at least to me) or just plain boring story-wise.
At least with "Werewolf By Night", we have this fantastic story of a monster hunter who is both man and monster, and watch as others around him react. And it doesn't skimp on the horror elements at all; it's done just right in tandem with the action scenes. This is an example of what the MCU has got to do to become good cinema, to be as good as the first "Iron Man" or "Black Panther" or "Captain America: Winter Soldier".

This is definitely one of the best things Marvel has done however I have to disagree that we need ten more of these. The best thing about this was that it was fresh and had a unique vision, the worst thing Disney could do is run this into the ground with multiple movies, spin-offs, and shows. I would much rather see more original visions that feel like their own thing exploring different characters.

I agree with FilmSpeak that Jack is more noble then Clint (Hawkeye) Clint just went on a killing spree because his family got snapped rather than seeking out his teammates to find out what's going on. He's out there killing every bad guy he comes across we didn't see his fellow assassin & bf Natasha Romanov killing everything she sees she was at the compund with the others trying to find a solution. Yeah, they did Hawkeye real dirty Jack hates killing people but because he's a werewolf he doesn't really have much of a choice whereas Clint does he just went about it the wrong way. I'm sure his wife Laura would've told him what he did while they were gone was not the right thing he could've sought solace in his remaining team. And yes, because Jack is seen as not one of the hunters after they learn who he is the other hunters look down on him when really Jack isn't the real monster the human hunters are. They enjoy killing just to appease their ego it's real pitiful I would side with Jack in an instant & Ted too I could imagine the Avengers treating Jack differently too which would piss me off even more. The hunters get the come uppings when they push Jack to his limit all he wants to do is save his friend & leave peacfully but Elsa's dear old mom & the other killers just wouldn't let him be. Also I think Elsa & Jack make a cute couple lol.

Instead of hunting them down, she will be using her abilites and family resources to help monsters and outcast like Jack and Ted, basically becoming the Nick Fury/Agent Coulson of the Marvel monster heroes.

Yeah but the fact that Jack was born in Transylvania isn't that important to his backstory outside that over 200 years ago one of his ancestors the Transylvanian Baron Grigory Russolf had his wife killed by Dracula and during his quest for revenge he is bitten by a werewolf which is how we got the origin of Jack's curse, but they can still keep this in the MCU and just say that Grigory's descendants came to the new world some time later.

    • @Gabe600
      @Gabe600 Год назад +2

but a story i would like them to adapt from the comics is a two part which starts in Tomb of Dracula #18 and ends in Werewolf by Night #15 where Jack visits his ancestors' castle in Transylvania while trying to learn more about the origin of his curse and ends up facing Dracula, and the coolest thing is that it's not just one fight but 3, they fought in 3 different occasions during the 3 nights of a full moon, Dracula won the first round, Jack the second and the third was basically a draw.
