In this Star Wars Video Essay, we take a deep dive into Why Star Wars is a Complete Mess. Recent announcements at Star Wars Celebration 2023 have shed new light on the future on the Disney Star Wars front. It is.. mixed to say the least. With The Mandalorian currently missing the mark with Season 3, it seems Star Wars is finding it harder than ever to produce high-quality content. Will the return of Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey be enough to dig the franchise out of the hole the sequel trilogy made, or is it set to destroy things further? We break it all down!

Disney has demonstrated repeatedly it is focused on hypothetical female audiences it has dreamt of creating for a decade. In the process, it has alienated the overwhelmingly male audience that watches all things sci-fi/fantasy. Males do not ever want girl boss Disney princesses in their shows. No one wants WNBA Disney. That is why Disney is struggling. To be sure, guys will show up for Star Wars/marvel…but the rate of this is dropping more and more and more as guys get long tired of the assembly line of girl boss better that every man trope characters. There is an activist agenda at play at Disney that surpasses business decisions…it is a philosophy to take traditionally male genres and make them into feminist vehicles to create future female fans. That’s why I checked out and don’t watch. Nor bring my kids to these shows. Nor have Disney plus. Which is a shame because I’m such an OG fan of Star Wars and was a very avid comic book collector. I’m past the point of anger over what they did to Han and Luke to total apathy. I watch RUclips when I need entertainment to fill my time.

Disney is on a downward spiral. Everything they have been releasing recently, Marvel or Star Wars, feels like they're trying to course correct their plane crash of an entertainment company. Nothing is worth watching, or exciting, or getting the support it should. Everyone behind these products are too out of touch or just don't have enough care/enthusiasm to make something worth while for these IP's. Putting someone new behind these products is not the solution. The people behind it need to decide where they want to take these products and come up with at least a 5-year plan, because throwing things at the wall to see what sticks is just losing money for them. I want good Star Wars, I want good Marvel. I would give them all of my money but I need to be entertained. I want to WANT to see these movies but they are so bad, generic, and just uninteresting. They're making movies I'd rather just watch on streaming or pirate services, not events to be seen in theaters. They need to do better, actually care about the products they're making, and they will see the money. Idk how they managed to make their products this bad for this long but I hope somebody picks it up soon, I miss these movies a lot.

And Palpatine shouldn't have returned, somehow. But most importantly, I'm still shocked that Disney, this huge company didn't have a line of story to be broken into three movies since the beginning. All the incompetency that Corporate Entertainment demonstrates is exactly what an independent artist like Lucas takes pleasure in criticizing.

The biggest issue with sequel characters like Rey, Finn, Poe, is that they were almost hilariously badly handled in the sequel trilogy and get a catch-22: to make them better, you'd have to retcon parts of ST, which Disnep wouldn't be cool with, or you'd have to soldier on with bad characters in a show or a movie that might be decent, but it would be even better with good characters.

Yes, you may own the rights but if you think you are above the generations of fans, you'll fail into an implosion of your own toxicity. This is a good lesson. If you want to make your own content, *make your own content.* If you want to make money off Star Wars, continue George Lucas's content including the moral of his stories. I liked Rey, and I liked Daisy as Rey, but I hate what the people behind the Sequel Trilogy did to the character, and I don't know if this new film can rectify all that. No; you know what? I'm going to be realistic here: I am quite confident that this new film WON'T rectify all that, no matter how hard they try.
And, I'm sorry, but I don't worship at the Altar of Filoni like other people here do. Yeah; it's clear that he LOVES Star Wars, but I don't see him reaching beyond what he loves about it to try anything NEW. I just see him making more and more of the same stuff with the same characters, like a kid who only plays with his favorite Star Wars figures while others remain untouched. He's not going to bring anything truly innovative or new to the table; he'll just find new ideas for the same old characters. That's not moving forward or letting go of the past. That's just "same shit, different series".

Rey was ultimately an unsatisfying character. You can't have an effective main character who has no character arc. What were Rey's faults? What were the things she struggled and failed at? How did she ultimately overcome these faults and struggles? That's a character arc. Instead, Rey is a complete blank slate with little to no personality written for her. Yes, she has abilities but that's not the same thing as personality. Luke, Han, Leia, C3PO - they all have personalities that make them relatable.

Rey is a character without a likable personality. The only conflict she ever had was her own narcissism: feeling insecure, needing affirmation, needing validation, only to realize that she needed no-one at all and that she was awesome from the start. She could even come out as a Skywalker just by saying so. I understand why that resonates with some people, but there is just nowhere to go now. How believable would it even be to give her some kind of actual struggle now, after 3 movies? What good will a 4th movie be that pretty much undoes what the previous 3 movies have done? And this would even be the good option. The bad option would be a Rey movie that just keeps doubling down: she battles the patriarchy, AGAIN. She is the most awesome hero, AGAIN. She won't need anyone's help, AGAIN...

My take on the sequel trilogy is: Ben Solo should have been our protagonist. Rey is a nobody mirroring Anakin, she is a child of the force, conceived to work as a dyad with Ben, an attempt of the force to bring balance in itself since the Skywalker lineage is too strong being created by manipulation of the force. Both Ben and Rey continuously change places in this light side/dark side battle (could even be a tragic love story considering they love each other but the more one pulls to the light the other is instantly pulled to the dark) which eventually leads to the death of Luke and Leia, leaving them both as the only strong force users in the galaxy. This all leads them both to investigate into this lineage, understanding the force deeper than ever and (without introducing him physically but as a force ghost) we see Plaguis motives on creating Anakin and the nature of balance. In the finale, they’re both doomed to die together to keep balance, or live and battle each other all their lives.

Kylo realizes his grandfather's and his uncle's sacrifice and decides to keep Rey on the good side, but realizes he has to stop her. But is conflicted because he sees a lot of himself in her. And ultimately he sacrifices himself to bring her back to the light side before she dies as well. Doesn't even need to have a shoehorned love story. It would've been a bittersweet ending.

Ara'lani is an older sister figure for Thrawn that has his back 100%, even when Thrawn drives her insane due to his lack of subtly. Thalias clearly deeply loves Thrawn, and Che'ri is their adopted daughter. Ba'kif is the father that Thrawn needs to help him stay the course while serving the Chiss. Thrawn is a hero who knows the greater good is worth the harder path. Thrawn cares deeply for all people.
The Chaos is a perfect setting to explore how other species use the force and allows the Star Wars Universe to expand.

Here's how I envision exactly why Disney (and KK) want to double down on Rey and the Sequel trilogy.
First, if your initial forays into a character or time period are not necessarily successful, you can redeem those eras or characters through extra content. Look at the Prequel era. Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones weren't exactly beloved when they came out, but Lucasfilm persisted and created a lot of extra content for both the characters and the setting.
And what happened? A lot of current SW prequel fans became fans through the animated series as well as the other material and games that came during that time. Additionally, we had games, comics, and other media that fleshed out the Prequel era.
But what have we had with the Sequel trilogy? We've had a few books, I guess, and there was that one animated show. But there's been very little extra content to make people even begin to like the Sequel trilogy (at least for those who didn't really like it). So what do you do? You create extra content around the Sequel trilogy era to flesh out characters and settings that were not fleshed out in the prior movies. In that regard, I can totally understand why Disney is doing what it is doing with the Rey sequel.
Second, I think there is an ideological point to it.
What does Disney lose if it abandons the Sequel trilogy? They admit that they were wrong, and that some of the fans (and yes, some of the haters) were right. Given that a lot of people have branded the Sequel detractors as some sort of "-ists" or "-phobes," you would be admitting that some of your ideological opponents were in fact correct. I don't think that the current Disney believes that they can make that decision.

She's desperate to prove they still work. They don't. They never did and never will. The "sequels" made money by burning through ~40 years of goodwill and a desire to see Luke, Han, and Leia again. Those three are the main characters of Star Wars and there's no escaping that fact. That's why Luke's return in The Mandalorian was received as if Jesus had come back, but MaRey Sue Palpatine's announced return was met with anger from most people, those clapping seals at a highly screened live event notwithstanding.

When The Force Awakens came out my first thought was that it was harmless nostalgia bait. Calling it a Sequel and claiming it was standing at the same level as GL's work was jumping the gun, but it wasn't upsetting content. I didn't love anything in it, but I didn't hate it either. Within minutes of the movie's end, though, I realized my problem: it had no passion. The love was quite literally gone. I had no desire to watch more Star Wars after The Force Awakens and was perfectly willing to let other people risk it to decide whether or not the coming projects were worth it. So far, only Mando 1-2, Rogue One and Andor have managed it. Amongst the vast ocean of new content since Disney acquired the franchise, 2.5 successes is...dismal. My only hope was that they didn't ruin Ahsoka, but your interest in Dawn of the Jedi at least reassures me that my current strategy might still get some good results.

Rey is a Mary Sue by definition. I think the actress is fairly competent, which helps with Rey’s character, but the script will never allow the actress to rise above the confines of what a Mary Sue is. She’s uninteresting because there’s no way she can’t be. I think there’s backlash against the Mary Sue thing in the fanbase because the media was super quick to brand anyone who said the words “Mary Sue” as a sexist, which is absurd. It’s a well-defined literary term. Many people examined themselves and wondered if indeed the media was correct, and they started to avoid the term because it was now, along with pretty much every other dissident sentiment, a political issue. Don’t back down. Mary Sue is the term for Rey because that’s what she is. It’s ok to admit it. She’s a bad character, written by bad writers who were hamstrung by bad producers who wanted bad things to make good money for themselves.

What is killing me about this is that they first lied about having no source materials to base the sequels on, killed the EU and turned it into Legends once they realized that was not the case, and didn't want to be hampered by what they felt was inferior works, and then they realized their movies/ideas sucked and are now stealing ideas (have been) from the EU they killed and are instead pushing it with their new crap characters.
Luke was suppose to rebuild the Jedi academy, not Rey. Why was it so hard for them to just adhere to what was already present and loved and then just build on it? They could have easily introduced new characters like Rey, Finn, Poe and so on so forth while paying homage and respect to what came before and sending off legacy characters in meaningful ways, and don't even get me started with how bad the new writers are and how much they seem to not understand anything about Star Wars whatsoever. This is why I quit Disney Star Wars and will not be coming back to it no matter how much they try to salvage it. Disney is a cancer.
When I think of how Disney has handled Star Wars, I see a company who bought land with a nice mineshaft that was decently maintained and packed with gold ready to be harvested. They then blew the mineshaft up, buried its corridors in rubble, and started digging 2 miles away, and are wondering why they can't strike the same gold George did before Disney got involved.

They need to straighten out the story line first. I'm so confused on who even Rey is.
If you want to do another story on Rey you need an origins story released first.
Or at least a few TV episodes to explain things.
But the bigger problem to me is not Rey it is how Palpatine came back and was he just a clone or did they move his mind/spirit from his old body into a new one, or did Palpatine somehow just survive the fall or what.
I'm so confused on the whole story right now and if it was me I would just start over and can 7,8,9 films.
Like you said episode seven was good, it gave us a good backstory to build on.
But also like you said episode eight destroyed Star Wars.
Episode nine felt like a salvage job but failed to explain things.
Now how do you build on that.
The whole thing is a mess, either reboot 7,8,9 or do a movie/show/series leading up to 7,8,9 that explains Rey, that explains Palpatine (which they are trying to do now), that explains Luke and how he turned into a bum, that explains the Knights of Ren, that explains the mess they made with those movies cause it will be hard to move on if you don't do that first.

It's just not hard to make a "pro-feminist" film that's also not misandrist. Alien. Aliens. Terminator. Terminator 2. Every Hayao Miyazaki film. Arcane, if you want a more recent example.
The problem is, Kathleen Kennedy, and a lot of people working in Hollywood today, don't seem to understand the difference, or are actively misandrist. It doesn't help that they constantly employ hacks like J.J. Abrams who don't even understand how the basics of a story work.

The Sequels had no plan, they were led by higher ups who thought the best way to sell this product was constant nostalgia. Whenever there is something good that gets popular the corporate people start taking over and say "the chart says this is the best way to go". Mandalorian Season 1, left alone, it was amazing. It got super popular, so the higher ups got involved and made it so their cash cow Baby Yoda would be back with Mando by the beginning of season 3. Doesn't matter if they're quickly reunited in a spinoff, doesn't matter if people who only watch Mandalorian are confused that they're back together, all that matters is the fan service and selling Baby Yoda toys.

Her me out guys and this might turn into an essay can’t lie…
Star Wars with Disney has transformed in its movie making and story telling premise. I think Disney looks at “Star Wars can be anything you want”, and I believe it as “you can be anything you want in Star Wars”. That’s the beauty, you can create and entire new species/planet/culture/tech phenomenon y or want in Star Wars within the universes rules and boundaries.
I believe Disney needs to make new feature films that don’t necessarily focus on the over-arching story. How about a story about a random jedi defector during the high republic era, or take us back to the old republic. Something we’ve never seen before. Ik people might say “well we’ve never seen a jesu rebuild an entire order before”, but is that really what you want to see? Why can’t we have a movie about the sith origins or characters origin/study of a character less known about like grievous or something…
Okay maybe that’s one’s pushing it but I think Star Wars needs to do things we’ve never seen before. Something that gets us excited and they can explore and truly have free reign, because so long as they are building on Lucas creation by making sequels they will always be victims to forced fan pleasing/service

He focuses more on the eye-candy moments rather than the storytelling itself, which often involves contradicting events that took place previously, thus damaging the universe due to a lack of coherence.
