      I think breeds like this are much harder to "read" as well, all the usual signs that a dog would give before biting are masked by the facial deformities - he's constantly panting and licking, so you can't use that; his eyes are so front-facing that it's hard to see a whale-eye; he can't snarl, because he barely has a muzzle; his ears are so flat and fluffy that they're tough to read position. I'm not surprised they have a reputation for snapping with no warning, what warnings can they give? I'm sure that struggle to communicate causes them extra background stress as well. I'd be very grumpy if I had to live with all that.

      @fluffycak3s Год назад +61

      @@RunninUpThatHillh my dog hated the sound of clippers, so yeah, my mom didn't take him to the groomers very often because he would snap and then they'd muzzle him instantly without knowing why he snapped and she hated how they would muzzle him. My dog never was muzzle trained or even knew what it was, so when the groomers did that, he pretty much threw his body all around, and being chained up to the table, yeah, our lil man could of harmed himself badly, or others. Long story short, the groomers didn't listen to what my dog was trying to signal them. A groomer or my dog could of gotten seriously injured. My mom spent 6-10hrs on a weekend just trimming down our dog. Comb and scissors. Blisters and all and weirdly enough, our dog sat there like a statue, would angle his face to get in the tighter areas, more so sat there in pride like "yes, cut my fur off mama, its TOO MUCH!" So I totally agree with you. Id much rather take the time to groom my own dog vs taking them to a closed in, unfamiliar spot. Not saying Vanessa is horrible or anything negative, its just the fact not all dogs need a professional to groom them. YES, it's easier, its what groomers are there for, hell , even hairstylists for people! Its 100% a service type of job. But sometimes it just isn't the proper situation/setting for the groomer or dog(s). If the dog is older or has medical stuff going on, maybe NOT seeing a groomer is the better situation. Vanessa seems caring but not every groomer is*
      I rambled on, sorry about that but its truly a matter of fact. Some dogs just CANT be taken to the groomers. There are steps to make it seem more bearable for the dog.. but, not all methods work.

    I think the thing that needs to be remembered, Pekingese, Lhasa Apso, the Maltese and the Shit Zhous, are all alarm breeds. They are specifically bred to be small breeds that can alert to intruders or strangers inside walled complexes like monasteries and forts. They were bred to be reactive and loud. In that regard, these small breeds do make a lot more sense. It would also be a reasonable explanation as to why socialization didn’t really do as much for the small alarm breeds like it does for the larger guard breeds. They weren’t supposed to become desensitized to new experiences because that made them a worse dog for the task they were bred for. It’s just supremely unhelpful now because they aren’t used in that role any more. They’re reactive in a world that hasn’t got a use for that reactivity; and it’s really a shame that it would take so long to breed that reactivity out, even with a unified breeding approach.

      @@Luminousmorrow you have no idea what an "absolutely inhumane condition" of a dog even looks like. his coat isn't tattered/dirty/burnt/covered in poo/fleas, etc. dog looks well fed and clean, besides the matting which I figure the dog got by running around while his coats wet (my pekingese did that a lot). His coat is lush and the dogs dont always let their owners cut their nails so most dont bother trying until they get too long.
      Inhumane conditions are having your dog be on a leash or in a cage outside all year long while neglecting it for months on end, while its sick and or starving. That is "absolutely inhumane" This guy's chunky and otherwise fine. A neglectful family wouldn't have even noticed the need nor bothered getting him to a groom, so these are fine owners. These tiny dog breeds even existing is a crime. I hope its made popular to illegalize distributing/owning such breeds with so many ailments. The fact that people breed/create these dogs where performing the basic functions to live is a workout is abhorrent.
      Edit: A major part of my breathing/chest pain is also due to my anxiety issues and stress (a doctor told me this). If you're having breathing issues with seemingly no trigger, anxiety and stress could very well be the cause. It'd be wise to separate yourself from the cause of your stress if so. I really appreciate that you give caretakers the benefit of the doubt when a dog isn't groomed top notch. I took my previous dog into the groomers every 6 weeks (poodle) to get groomed (over a 7 year span) and when my depression tanked due to life circumstances, the groomers would give me these little judgmental comments about his nails, or that he wasn't brushed, and I never had the courage to tell them that my mental health was basically at rock bottom. I made sure my dog was always warm, and well fed, and hydrated, and we went on walks most days out of the week even when I wanted to curl up and die, and it made me feel like shit that they thought I was a bad guardian just because he wasn't brushed all the time.
    Edit: To those in the comments who claim depression didn't alter your ability to care for another, and others should exist by your absurd measuring stick? Get help; you're clearly missing your anterior insular cortex. My Dog's coat was always healthy otherwise; I kept him clean, well brushed, and his nails trimmed. I made sure to take him in every 6 weeks like the groomers suggest to keep his coat manageable and tidy. I just couldn't maintain his nails and coat between those visits when depression dragged me down for a 5-6 month period, and because of that I made sure to take him in every 6 weeks without fail so he _could_ get the grooming he needed. I've never loved a dog like the one I've described here. He died last March, and the world isn't remotely the same without him. And don't you dare tell me I should've given up on that dog. I rescued him; I made a legal and emotional promise that I would care for him for the rest of his days despite the awful people who beat him, shoved him in a crate, and abandoned him on the side of the road. I swore to him I would _always_ be here for him - when he had separation anxiety, when he wasn't socialized, when we had to have his leg amputated for cancer -- And I was. I was there for his birthday parties and the 'cakes' that I made, I was there when the thunder storms turned him into a jittery mess and we slept in a blanket fort in the tub, I was there every single night to brush his teeth, there every night to brush out his beautiful red curls, and I was there when I felt his last heartbeat, when I saw his last breath. He slept next to me every single night from the day we adopted him, and I had 7.5 amazing years to know him. I never once had to choose between the gas bill or food, and I'm grateful for that. I took _damn good_ care of my boy. Fuck anyone who thought I didn't take care of him even when I couldn't take care of myself.
