Habs management is doing exactly what they need to do. No need to do major free agent signing today. They need to save the money for future
Tony, as a very proud québécois... I don’t give a dam about people criticizing the absence of pics from Québec... You get the best players you can get... end of story... If the players can learn a couple of french words... that I really do appreciate... and a lot of people do... Keep on the good job Tony
Exactement
I'm a proud "Quebecois" now... Originally from Slovakia and now living in NYC for the past 30 years learning some broken quebecois, and refreshing my long forgotten French classes from college, to understand the Habs pressers... Take that;) lmao
Good for you Guy I think you guys should call that out with eachother as much as possible when it comes from anyone else it sound.. insensitive? Maybe? Idk I can understand the want maybe for a Qc native playing with the Canadiens they're a big part of Qc culture honestly I always love having CanadiANS play with the Canadiens that includes Qc natives but they are too selfish with them they're not Qc's team they're everybody's team and the importance of having a Qc native on the lineup is not a priority for anyone who isn't from Qc, generally, we're more concerned about winning hockey games idk maybe I'm crazy and I mean even when you do get a talented homeboy you tear them apart Marcheseault (hope I spelled that right) knew better anyway I've rambled on long enough just one humble Habs fan's opinion 😅 go Habs go!!
Bien dit (well said) Guy! My mother tongue is English however I am bilingual. I now live in UK, originally from Montreal. When living in LA Belle Province, je me souviens beaucoup de français m’a dit (I remember many French people saying to me) I was not québécois because I was "Anglais" (English). I recall Larry Robinson & Bob Gainey learning some French and were pretty dam good when interviewed in French which the fan base appreciated. As long as some of they core guys like Suzuki, Caufield and Slaf make an effort that should suffice.
@@RustyShaklferd7788 You got it right Rusty (see my comment above),
Just out of curiosity, I did look out where the contracts of Nick, Cole and Slaf would stand for this upcoming season. And among forward, they are 51st, 52nd and 54th highest paid forward. These positions among points/game for forward is roughly 70pts/season.
So, as of this year these "pay now, benefit later" type of contracts are already in the zone of fair value, it will only get better.
Great analysis Sebastien!
I tought Slaf would get close to 8.5 so getting him for 7.6 is amazing. I think Slaf accepted a bit less to respect the salary structure in place.
There is no salary structure... stop with that... its only cause hes a young smart kid... who wants to get a financial security for the next 10 years... he knows he could make a couple more millies by the end of his contract but he prefer to play safe... smart move .... pld's a king in that kind of game
@@coreysghostglowmask8650 and also he wants to be a part of a winning team. I truly believe that with this mgmt longterm approach and how they build the team, he'll get at least one Lord Stanley during his time with the Habs.
@@rich1231 It is very possible they win a cup one day, but for that, the league will need tweak their salary cap system which does give an unfair advantage to the US no state tax teams. Time will tell !!!
@@powers1500 The Oilers nearly won the Cup so anything can happen albeit I do agree Canadian teams face an uphill battle. Given Bettman introduced the salary cap nothing will change until he steps down and even then the NHL Governors would have to want to address this issue. Will this happen, as you said time will tell. Sports has been for years on an uneven slope. The wealthy teams in MLB sign the top players despite the luxury tax penalties and in Europe the wealthiest teams sign the best footballers regardless of Fair Play rules and penalties. Sadly that's the way sports goes.
@@charles6180I concur with point of view. It had been harder to sell tickets in the USA than in Canada, so the salary cap plus the 4 yrs for drafted players out of the USA was a way to boost the business down there. However, certain US states have now become fiscal paradise for hockey players versus canadian market 👍
I love this version of Tony, when he just speaks his mind with no filter
A superb Hughes masterclass in disciplined development and team buy in for the long term! Great job so far this offseason.
Juraj spoke about the contract:
"We agreed very quickly, it was accompanied by a lot of discussion, but I knew that if the chance presented itself, I would sign. I focused on eight years, if I wanted more money I could have waited longer." "Now I want to focus on success. I feel like we're on the right track and we're creating something special in Montreal. I want to be a long-term part of the Habs. I don't think about the money so much, but I'm enjoying it. I have smarter people around me, so I'm sure they'll help me with that ."
slaf signing is epic. this team is going to be a powerhouse. Rutger McGroaty would make us cup contenders in 2026 LFG!
Playoffs contender, not cup. But that would be only up and up from there.
With current make up, I really think we have only 1 year left of pain.
Prime Wayne Gretzky would not make this team a Cup contender in 2026. Be patient. Enjoy the rebuild and let it happen. Let the anticipation build. Won't be cup contenders in 2026, but we will be in the not too distant future.
Stop smoking
Habs dont want to win they are just cruising the bad contracts of galagher and anderson Centre bell is full ,fans are blinded by all thé rebuild talk but in 3 or 4 years we will start everything over again with new management
Eric is one of your best regular guests for sure, great content as always! To his question as to whether or not this year will require the most patience from fans, all I care about is that my young kids will know a winning Habs team!
The core is still young and while I want them to succeed and establish a winning culture I think they could GREATLY benefit with another top 5 pick. Another year of developping the younger guys and rookies, working on the PP, getting the right people in place till the bad contracts are shed off and cap space is available to sign a big FA that’ll be part of a Cup aspiring roster. Not next off season, the one after. Just my opinion.
Thats a smart one
Finally someone here who gets it. Yes, taking it slowly only enhances the uality of the rebuild.
They going to be bottom 5 next year
@@mikecatsIt is still possible...if they get a rash of injuries or their goalies are turning really bad. However, finishing between 8th and 12th is still very possible. Time will tell !!!
You're 100% correct.
Part of what Hughes and Gorton are doing is drafting players who are not only highly skilled, but connected or wanting to be in Montreal. If Wright had the exact trajectory, no way he’d sign for this, but Slaf would. Look at the picks this year… the first four all had Montreal as the top choice.
Damn I love Eric! I wish every fan would listen to him! He is so smart and rationnal!
Yea, ask him him about juri sekac
Here’s my pulse:
Slaf was a good signing. Maybe too much, maybe a steal time will tell but getting it done takes the gossip away and probably the distraction.
But the team hasn’t changed much, and may be slightly better than last year, but that means Dach has to be healthy and impactful.
Otherwise we have to wait until Gallagher (probably his last year) Dvorak, and Anderson are gone. That opens up money for a FA next year as well as another top 10 pick.
Teams can change so quickly with cap space. Ride it out, get out of those contracts and get some big names next year.
Exactly... smart for both sides
They are not lookign for free agents. They are waiting for their young players to come of age. It's the slow process, and it's the right process.
I agree with Tony on having too many small players.
I would trade owen beck , Anderson, and, another defenceman for crosby
This is a great deal. Habs take the risk, Slaf takes the paycut if he develops well. Its on Slaf to make this deal a bargain.
talking about size regarding marchessault is pointless. habs cup window isn't the next 3 years, its the years after that. so who cares if habs have undersized jobbers like harvey pinard today? he's not with the habs when theyre competing, and neither is gallagher or even marchessault himself.
Absolutely. RHP, Barré-Boulet, Gally and Anderson are place holders until the kids graduate.
Tony... you are so sadly right... Many French players do use the Montréal option to get more leverage.... and it's OK.. But sincerely... it depends on the players... some prefer the sunshine and going to the arena with a seadoo and no snow... others they want to see their kids grow up with their family, grand parents and learn their language...
Most players including the french ones want to play for a US no state tax team...it is so unfair for the rest of the league !!!
@@powers1500I’d do the same thing !
@@lorenz777 I understand too, indeed, that 's the league that made up that cap system...not the players which are now taking advantage of it.
Stamkos’ contract will look terrible after the first year.
60 points players are at this range…
This represents how much this team need elite talent …
Nashville isn’t cup contenders even after today
We will remain patient, we are on the right track. the future has never been this bright since I started watching hockey in 1992
Habs will make a big move before the season starts.
Nope, yesterday to the question, was it important to get a top 6 before sept camp, hughes said NO. so sorry no big trade this year
I would make a trade for Crosby because if management waits two years Crosby will not be affective like he would be right now .he would love to be a hab more than any other player in the NHL
Patrick Laine is still out there, Hughes might make a move before September
Next contract to nail is Guhle ! When Guhle is secured we will know exactly what is our cap hits with our core Suzuki, caufield, Slaf, Guh + Dach + newhook+HUdson, With this nailed you can figure out what you do with the rest of the cap.
Totally agree guys . Great episode
Im pretty sure this tax thing doesn't matter as much as people think ,when you travel and to a place that has tax they get taxed
I think it's important to players that the main goal is to cash in. And you don't really want them on a cup contender.
I think the other group of players want, yes, a paycheck but most importantly win. And for these players, tax is of little importance.
Kent spoke a bit about this, tax isn't as much as a big thing as we think it is, in HuGo we trust 🎉
Congrats Tony couldn’t agree more Gaux chez nous always said only time they want to play here is when they’re done. Who cares I want the guys who want to play here no matter where they’re from ! Love the management let the cake bake
Progress is what the fans want from this team. Exciting hockey is the goal. The core players having great years and scoring becomes a strong point of their game. A powerplay that comes alive and a goaltending duo doing well.
WHat Montreal fans want is championships. That is the expectation here. And that takes as long as it takes to properly build it. Any GM can rush and mess it up.
You save your money for Crosby, Rantanen or Leon if they happen to make it to market. You'd also have demidov coming over
Tony, please discuss the Xhekaj contract situation next show. What should we expect and when
I wouldn't give two ***** about fans "patience" as they haven't had a great team in over 3 decades. Build a team that can compete for a Cup.
They did good at the draft...but lets face it, they got really lucky. If Dach did not get hurt alll season or Arizona did not win their last game of the season before moving to Utah or Montreal did not have a 3 goalie rotation...they would not have finished 5th. As they say...better be lucky than good !!!
@@powers1500 - Absolutely and about time. I want to see an exciting product that produces results. For the most part these last 30 years have been tough to endure.
@@rgood1204 Technically, Montreal would still need a genuine #1 defenseman and a genuine 1C to be a real cup contending team. However, this draft finally gave them an elite player. Demidov will be the highest paid player in 4 to 5 yrs.
First of all, there was no real good fit in Free agency, they need one more yr to determine exactly who will pan out and who will not, Toronto mistake was taking on Contracts like Marleau, and then trading assets to get rid of them, then overpaying their core. Ottawas mistake was declaring the rebuilt over when it wasn’t. Trading for pieces that wouldn’t commit , and didn’t become part of the core was also a problem . That is why they will not trade Gally or Anderson this yr. Maybe next yr, but I see a buy out more likely, especially for Gally. Andy was a beast in the playoffs, and if he can score 15-20 goals, his value will be in the playoffs
Eric engles is the most brilliant guy in the hockey world. He uses his great analytic mind and nuanced perspective to balance the MTL emotional fan base and media. Love that guy
Let's just play the players we've got. If top6 forwards and top4 defence play at least 70 games, Habs have a good chance of making playoffs 24-25.
But if the Habs fall short and won't make playoffs 24-25 season, why not just play our current roster, at least habs tried to give them added trading value for next season trade deadline.
Dvorak & Armia can each be traded for a 2nd pick if they play well enough...
Also, David Savard can possibly be traded for 1st round pick 24-25 to a playoff contender team.
Habs forwards currently:
Caulfield Suzuki Slaf
Newhook Dach Armia
Roy Dvorak Gallagher
Pezzetta Evans Anderson
Welcome back to ville LaSalle!!!
Gorton drafted Lucic, Marchand and Kessel in 2006 and trade for Chara after. He know hockey that I can tell you.
I can't believe people think Nashville did well. They will be paying to-be 34 and 35 year olds 13.5 million for the next four years. They should have just traded for Marner.
Go habs go baby!!!
habs have the assets and will make a move for a winger. Habs have too many draft pick and too many defenseman and will move at the draft …
Today = Habs will fight to make the playoffs with the same team.
Pretty funny 😂
Indeed, fans/media tend to hype everything. Lets not forget that Montreal is not the only team with a lot assets to trade away to improve themselves. Utah, Columbus, Anaheim, Buffalo and some other teams also have plenty of assets to compete with Montreal on the trade market !!!
Tony I was born in Mtl. I want the Habs to win the cup, I don't care what language the players speak. Free agents do not want to play in Mtl. French or not. They want $$$. That's it.
The team "coach/management" hurt themselves by gifting Slafkovsky the first line and top pp.IMO and of course only an opinion they did it to save theri face because there have been so many question marks surrounding their draft picks. So they wanted to make Slafkovsky look better than he really is and he still has not proved much more than a 4 mil contract so they paid him double because they gifted him that ice time last year.
If they played him on te third line he would be signing likely a 4-5 mil long term contract but management goofed up.
The only positives I have sen so far was getting MAtheson and Demidov which is massive I still can't believe we finally made the right pick. However you can't goof up everywhere else and miss on Tkachuk miss on Mitchkov and think your going to still be lucky enough to win any cups.
The problem si that the fans are so starved for a winner that now we accept MEDIOCRE game play and call it AMAZING game play so it is what it is.
I'm halfway through and Tony is at 4 interruptions 😂 he's making his own show terrible, interrupting to make the same point over and over. I don't think Eric finished one answer without being talked over
Sick
Tony you seem too no understand much about team spirit...at 20 years old with that kind of contract it's fantastic plus you must keep some money on the table to pay others good players who will join the team. If you don't want to make Toronto mistake yous should have a team who stick together without jalousy...Do you think Toronto will go far with does guys at 13, 11, 10, millions each NEVER NEVER. Montreal will
This is the year where ppl need to be patient… other than the development of the younger key player it will be the same offense and thé division is stil a nightmare… the next pick could be top 10… and its a good Thing…. Demidov is coming
Play responsibly, instead of gamble responsibly. Humm 🤔 is gambling a game?
We dont know for his ceiling yet... nobody knows...
Tony takes forever to get to the point, his questions are 3 minutes long then he interrupts
Don't care. We love Tony
Hockey is a business first and foremost, so I understand wanting francophone players in a francophone market, but having a shitty team is also incredibly bad for business. Lets focus on making the team good and go from there. If we can get some francophone players on the way, that's great, but it shouldnt be priority number one when trying to build a winning team. Drafting guys from the Q just so we can say we did is dumb. If the Q doesnt have good enough players, that's the Q's fault, not Montreal's.
guentzel > reinhart. sorry this year for reinhart is an anomaly. guentzel has been a beast his entire career even when crosby got hurt and he elevates his play in the playoffs. reinhart was a ghost in the finals outside a bad game 7 goal. guentzel was carolinas best forward along with aho.
Slaf got huge $$$ ! What are you talking about Tony ? Love Juraj but his ceiling may be 25-30 goals and 50-60 points. He played on the 1st line and PP. Slaf loves Montreal and he loves his teammates. I bet he is really happy and respects making a tiny bit less than Nick and Cole. Team chemistry is so important and expensive free agents can ruin a dressing room.
How is his ceiling 50-60 points. He got 50 points in his first full season at 19 years old. Not to mention he was absolutely dominant in the second half of last year. His ceiling is closer to 80-90.
He's gonna have at least one 100 point season, if everything aligns right for him. Normally, he clearly has the 70-90 point per season potential.
@@justinlocke8390 I said " may " . There is no guarantee he plays 1st line or 1st PP going forward. I like the contract. But he has 60 points in 121 games. He got a lot of $. It is a generous contract. Maybe a bargain
@@timfarrell5659 ceiling implies the greatest possible outcome, adding in may doesn’t change anything. His ceiling is without question higher than 60 points.
The only time I think of killing misled is when I hear your intro song. Other than that, Love the show.
Not this year for free agency maybe next
Most teams went side ways, Washington and New Jersey got better , but who else, one other thing if, Zadorov , Tanev and Hanifan, were that good, wouldn’t Calgary have done a lot better as a team, I believe all are over rated
Buy saying hes not a fit your saying we ate not going g 2 win the cup in 5 years so your wrong tony
No for Marsh
Is it time for us to get Crosby and win the cup?
Quoiiii? he couldn't do it with pitts, you think he will do it here with a young team, second year in a rebuilt, not the time for a big ufa, in 2-3 years yes
@@bobsmith9936 Didn't he raise the cup 3 times with pitts? I absolutely think he'd have better wingers in Slaf, Demidov, Caufield or Dach and we'd have one hell of a one two punch. We drafted Demidov man, the rebuild is over.
Those must be some good shrooms
@@acidraindrops1 We need another top 6. Gimme a better alternative then.
Imagine being upset that a player who has only played 4 months worth of quality NHL hockey should be the highest Paid forward on the team. I'm sorry Tony you should never be apart of a NHL franchise. You believe Bergeron was the best player in the 2003 draft and then you make a point that slaf should make more than Suzuki because he was the first overall pick. Suzuki is the number 1 centre and captain he deserves to get paid more than a 20 year old left winger.
He really hasnt proven himself yet when he gets 40 goals and a100 pts then we can talk
Stop with your criticism and harassment... are you on drugs?
Eric is so inpatient. "Are you gonna keep going? Oh my god..", sounds like a lovely person...
They need to tank another year
Eric has to be the most patient person in the world for letting Tony speak over and cut him as many times as Tony does haahaha gonna disagree with you here bud, cheers
Tony gets carried away with listing things sometimes and eric was in the right to speak up
Everyone keeps saying they didnt sign anyone because they were sticking to their plan, even thou KH made it clear he was looking to sign a top goal scorer. Nobody wants to come to Montreal yet. Obviously.
Glad you are not the GM Tony if you want to pay more just "because"
I am very disappointed the Habs did not sigh Monahan.
At the contract he signed......no thx you 😂
Our fans always want to hold TOO LONG to habs and ex habs, prime example, josh anderson and brendan gallagher. Sean monahan had his time with the habs as a rehab project and we gained two 1st round picks. No point signing him now
Thanks stopping Tony it sounds like a recap of all contracts that was signed loll
