off hand backhand in comp! colorado has winter warriors winter DG series which Eagle competes in especially at Valmont his home course WW makes players throw strange throws like off hand
If he can really develop that lefty backhand it’ll be wild to see. A player who can go backhand no matter the lie would have a big advantage (presumably he’d still throw SOME forehands). Crazy to think about, especially since he’s still so young. Lot of time to perfect the craft still.
I used to throw quite a bit with an ambedextrious player, he used to dominate our league games a decade ago probably still could. trying to imagine someone with Eagle's natural talent developing such a rare trait would be something to watch.
Two years ago I hypothesized that a minimum of ten years would begin showing ambidexterity in the competitive scene. It's a good thing to have a balance in athletics, and using both arms both ways is a good thing for disc golf. I happen to play ambidextrously.
Long time right-hand, back-hand player here... In 1999, I was practicing my left-hand, back-hand when the local pros said I should develop my right-hand forehand. I listened, and unfortunately, my forehand has always been weak. I was gaining confidence with my lefty but I didn't commit. I wish I had. I'm not ambidextrous, but I think my lefty had more potential than my forehand. I'm now 55, and the forehand hurts. Eagle is smart to develop his lefty. I think Eagle will be a contender at Worlds this year because he's not wearing himself down every week (and I hate to say that, because I love to watch the pros play - go Jomez!).
He's blessed, most people can't learn to throw with the off hand as an adult unless they had some familiarity with it before. I throw sporting objects right-handed because they are generally heavy and my left shoulder is kinda shredded. I think the only left handed disc throw I'd attempt is if the lefty forehand was the only viable option, and it wouldn't go very far. Even then a right-handed patent-pending might be a better decision. But I can toss darts (and pretty much anything else light that doesn't need a ton of speed) with either hand. I can write with the off hand (definitely not equally well, but I can do it, especially at something large like a whiteboard), and actually learned the majority of my poker chips tricks with the left hand _only_ so that I could relegate it to the background and not let the presence or absence of chip twirling be a tell about my hand strength.
it's probably pretty similar to the stress of throwing a baseball, and blown out elbows are incredibly common for pitchers, which is why Tommy John surgery has saved many careers (including, of course, Tommy John).
Eagle is one of my favorite players for a particular reason of utilizing ambidexterity under the light of bodily affliction, and also to allow for balance so the body can heal. Ambidexterity is inevitable for competitive disc golf.
I can certainly see the utility of having a forehand on both sides, for those times you're stuck behind something large and only have one reach-out option. Those who can't, will have slightly less reach and a lot less vision throwing a patent-pending with the dominant hand. Also, putting with either hand, particularly turbo, could be a way to get around an obstacle on the green.
I have a shoulder issue that prevents me from using a sidearm. A few years back I was working with a lefty backhand with some success (actually have two lefty aces, very lucky 😀). Eagle may be the inspiration I need to work on this again.
I never wanted to throw lefty until I had to because I injured my right shoulder. It was awkward but I got it eventually. My shoulder is fine now but I'll bust out a lefty shot now and then just for fun.
@@Wizler71 Some day you'll find yourself in the woods with only one escape route, and you have to reach so far to access it that your only options are a lefty forehand or a righty patent-pending, and you might have a little more margin of error with the lefty forehand just because you have a bit more reach and can see where you're throwing. The patent-pending has always looked like a bit of a hack to get around the inability to throw with both hands.
Very informative video. Love to see Eagle elevate the game and I wonder if switch hitting will become more popular. As for DGPT coverage, I don't know. I watch post produced coverage because I don't want to sit through hours of live-ish coverage, so I didn't bother with the pay wall and I didn't see most of the event. I'm sure I'll rub some the wrong way, but I have a bitter taste in my mouth towards DGPT because of the European Open, particularly after seeing that it was a legendary battle, and I think there are far better ways for them to popularize the sport while making more money without resorting to paywalls and locking out those who are best at coverage. Not having that coverage available online for posterity, polished & shined by producers like JoMez, it just makes me sick.
I think in 5-10 years it will be a pleasure to determine whose changed game has led to better results (some we've already seen): Simon and no longer being able to achieve 100% because of his elbow. Eagle and no longer being able to throw RHFH because of his shoulder. Both are or already have re-tooled their game to adapt a new style.
Agreed. And in both cases it made them truly focus on the game and how to play smart golf, and score when they can't rely on a super power. (Both with distance, but Simon and his crazy Hawkeye lines and Eagle with his forehand.) Goes to show that when prodigies put in even more effort, they can do incredible things.
While injuries are never a good thing, I do think this caused eagle to really work on some of the points of his game that were struggling. His performance against Paul was insane and one of the best tournaments ever played.
I think you might have some of my favorite youtube content when it comes to disc golf. I think you add a thoughtful and professional voice to disc golf youtube. That being said, the soundbites and other silly editing things at the beginning felt a bit out of place for the channel. I feel like it's pretty common for disc golf creators to do that kind of stuff with their content. So I liked that this channel didn't really do that. Just my two cents. Have a good day.
Thank you Austin. We really appreciate you supporting our channel, and your kind words. Our goal is to make content that is entertaining and enjoyable, and certainly not annoying. Your feedback is helpful! 👊
You bet. I realize my opinion could be easily in the minority and you guys just need to do what is best for the channel. But I figured more feedback is better than less. Best of luck!
I'm a player that has never had a forehand, for a while it felt like it was impossible to play some holes without it, but James Conrad and now Eagle have proved that the turnover backhand is an evolution of Disc Golf and not a hindrance or devolution.
Shoulder injuries are awful for the forehand. My son ripped his out playing football in high school (and because he has my genetics). His forehand is very weak as a result. I am going to ask him about McMahon's style to see if he can adapt it.
He's the best! Sidearm is so hard on the shoulder and elbow it's ridiculous! His lefty backhand is world class! I'd say see ya to forehand unless it's a flick shot or something.
My first Rota disc golf video the just popped up on my phone. I will just say well done! Really liked the approach, narrative, analysis and the goofy things!
Why is there this notion that eagle was only as good as he was because of his sidearm. He only had an elite one for like 2 years and was already good long before that. He is good because he throws really far and putts well not because he can throw sidearm.
I feel like being ambidextrious is going to take disc golf by storm and be a permanent feature of the top pros because sidearm is clearly pretty damaging especially when thrown hard.
I come from ultimate and have developped lefty throws as a tool, and in disc golf, on drives, its not that big of a difference , but for putting around obstacles, its a very powerfull tool. When putting from a knee around a tree for exemple, beeing able to avoid that close range sidearm, and putt a lefty backhand is infinitly more valuable than long backhand drives.
Look what he did when he broke his hand by punching the ground. He stayed in the running a lot longer than anyone expected while severely limited in his shot selection, and most shots he could still do were painful nonetheless.
Yea, no. Paul is still doing just as well, the guy HAD to learn this because of an injury. Anyone else can just what, wait, they can just throw forehand? What?!
I think Eagle is a once in a generation talent. Throws the farthest forehand and backhand, and now out throws Chris Clemons, and Zach melton lefty?!? Uli has also developed a sweet lefty but Eagle shot -42!
Well not quite... this is sort of a replacement for the forehand crush he no longer has in his arsenal. So at best it's replacing one tool with another, rather than adding one, but it may work as well or better.
All you have to do to win is being great and having a bit of luck or call it skill, it helps alot if the next man makes a big error just before the last hole.
McBeast is a beast indeed, but not a robot. Perfection can beat him because he will make the occasional mistake. But those perfect days come so rarely, and even more rarely do you string together more than one to win a tournament. Statistically, Paul probably has the right approach, but every now and then someone's gotta out-beast him.
Yeah, he was always trying to do this and could get away with it due to age and how he trained after age 19 but now after the injury it looks like Eagle had to work on touch and control since he probably did not want to reinjure the shoulder from disc golf trying to get the disc on every under 550 foot hole to the basket with a less then 25 foot putt with every under 700 foot hole to around 100--175 feet of the basket.
i like eagle...i like alot of disc golfers but eagle got all the breaks to win that tournament....but all d golfers have those breaks sometimes....eagle in the woods where he has to have a forehand....hes going to have to james conrad it and it works sometimes but you all know u have to have a forehand to compete head to head
@@ouch2345 just what I was thinking. Great play put him in the position to capitalize on the breaks. Otherwise he's just another guy watching Macbeth destroy the whole field. Again.

I could only imagine the torque placed on elbow and shoulder from an eagle fh. Man
Looking at images of him mid forehand. The answer is yes.

My favorite player. Such a beast and chilling and just an amazing talent. As a left BH I was glad to see him try that approach.
I think what we're seeing is a development of the aspects of disc golf that were held bacj by his reliance on one of the best forehands in the game
This was stated explicitly in the video but thx for the reiteration.

Narrator sounds like Paul McBeth.
Yes. Eagles mental fortitude is clearly top tier.
