Hello guys watching you from Europe.. Would be nice if at least the cream rabbit would get a newer jetta diesel motor in it from Co-part or other dismantling junkyards and keep it longer just to be used longer these are still very cool specially the European version looks workable.. We certainle looking forward to next clip with barn Supra !
I sold new Volkswagens from 1979 to 1983. Pre- 1980 all Rabbits were made in Germany. After that all US Rabbits were made in Westmoreland plant in US. C was for Custom Rabbit and L was for Luxury Rabbits which were more "luxurious". All other VW models were still made in Germany. Think the quality of the cars went down in US cars. Most all German gas cars were fuel injected starting in 1977, although I think some cars were carburetor cars in US and cheaper as I recall. There was also a "base" Rabbit below the C which was a 2 door stripped out car. Very bare bones and with carburetor. Diesel only available on C and L models. Hope this helps guys!
Yes the quality went down and the suspension was tuned mushy. My Dad had an 1981 ‘L’ in black with the full wheel covers and a light grey vinyl interior and automatic shoulder belts. It had a 1.7 litre gas and looked pretty classy. More chrome too.
me as a german never ever heart of the rabbit..here in germany its always been called vw golf. this was golf 1. in america same care was called rabbit..weird..i am today old when i found out. hahaha..greetings from berlin
In the early '90's , our Uitenhage plant in South Africa was producing Mks. 1, 2 and 3 at the same time. They're still very popular here as little boy racers, track racers, drag racers and mom taxis. 😊 . 1,3 litre, 1,6 litre, 1,8 litre, 2.0 litre...carb or fuel injection...4 spd or 5 spd manual ...or automatic. 2 door, 4 door and with a boot (Jetta). We had 'em all...😮😅. Our front indicators were closer to the edge of the bumper. Later ones had no quarter vents on front windows.
Big VW enthusiasts here living in Wadsworth, former detailer of 15 years as well. Awesome score on the rabbit collection, and amazing results on the Dakota beige? Rabbit. Some day hope to find a nice mk1 rabbit, caddy, or cabriolet to restore with my son. He's only 2 and a half, so I have a little bit of time.😂
My very first car I bought was a 1975 Volkswagen Rabbit (gas) in 1979. It was orange outside with a plaid, yes I said plaid, interior. I wish the past owner was still alive to see the transformation you did in this video. Hopefully ALL the Rabbits are saved, restored and driven again by owners who love them still as much as I still do. If the engine in it could be rebuilt I'd do it. Otherwise a stock engine. My ultimate wish is to restore all the Rabbit's to factory like condition and drive them every once in awhile. Can you tell I LOVE Volkswagens?
You opening line is classic...."you guys don't know what we go thru....."....... Well, it's hard work and we love it, thank you so much for this! I love these Rabbits!!!!
Who would have ever thought this would be entertaining? Apparently I’m hooked since discovering your videos a short time ago. It’s amazing what you can do with these cars.
OMG, it's so nice seeing this beautiful car getting cleaned up, so satisfying. I'm from Serbia and those cars are really common here. Appreciate your work
That Rabbit is looking great, just in time for Easter! I learned to drive in a 1979 VW Diesel, with a clutch that had “seen better days” and I have a super soft melty place in my heart for them. That engine was rated at 52hp and required a heavy foot just to get it out of its own way, but there are videos on RUclips of people swapping 1.9 TDIs into MKI Caddy’s (the pickup version of the Rabbit). That would definitely give it more pep in its step… but it would be a major project. Good luck with the Rabbits I can’t wait to see more!
One of the more interesting finds for you guys. My dad was a precision machinist/engineer back in the 70's and early 80's. He drove one of those square headlight rabbits for a decade to work..3 hours each way in all kinds of New England weather. Just oil changes and tires. Zero issues.
We had a Rabbit diesel. It was a great almost trouble free car for 200K miles. It also got almost 50 mpg almost everywhere we went. It was a good highway car, comfortable and rode and drove very well. The only drawback was the motor could have been a little more powerful. On the highway going up very steep grades had to go to third gear. Loved that little car. Paint and interior stayed very good the whole time.
So happy you guys got to the Mitten!! We used to have this great place in Michigan called “Parts Place for all Volkswagens”. Those dudes would’ve love these Rabbits!! Keep up the good work guys. I rock my WD Death Trap shirt at work and get tons of comments.
2:51 He's right! I thought the same thing, I have a 94' Golf mk3 with the 3 doors and those early golfs, the mk1,2 and 3 were just too tiny to come with 4 doors, it just looked odd. Thus, the 3 door versions were more preferable and were even structurally stronger. It also gave them a much sportier look! Great video guys, I love these cars, hoping to buy a mk2 or mk1 one day!
So cool! Our family has a history of driving diesel VWs. My dad had one like this I believe in college or something. I daily drive a ‘97 Passat TDI 5 speed. I’m the 2nd owner. Only like 63,000 miles on it, tan leather interior with a black dash. One of my dream cars. I get average 48 mpg in the summer, around 40 mpg in the winter. Most I got was 53.1mpg on a trip! They are awesome cars to own and a fun to drive. Plenty of modern features too.
Back in the late 90's in high school, me and a couple of my friends were big VW fans. I had a black/red interior 84 GTI, which I sold to a buddy who's 1983 Rabbit Diesel C ran away on him and blew up when I picked up my White 84 GTI, and my other buddy had a 1982 Rabbit LS which to my knowledge was his first car which he still has today.
From the way the car looked at the beginning to what it looked at the end you guys did a great job would love to know what you guys are going to do with the other 4 Rabbits
OMG I'm fuc*ing jealous !! My old man bought a 79 Rabbit 🐇 brand new his was a 2 door beige brown interior also a Diesel L model I soooooooo want those VW's
I absolutely Love these V dubbs .That diesel would be my dream car. Also like the gray 2 door as well.Great find Guys. You guys are wise beyond your years.Your parents must be very proud of all of you!Happy Saturday everyone!
LOVE these Mk1's , had several of them in the 80's . Started with a few Golf C , gasoline , last one I had was an 85 GTI . Good old days , thx for posting
I love these cars...I'm currently building a mk1...it's so weird,I was actually looking for a video on how to wash and detail a mk1 that was standing for some time.. Wow the synchronicities of the universe is on point
My pawpaw taught me how to drive in an 84! I would love to find another one like his and rebuild it! I need to find another one!! I love these little cars!
I was told about your channel by another youtuber (Dumpster Diving Momma of 2) and WOW was she right !!! Your videos are awesome and your work transforming vehicles is 1st class !!!
VW Rabbit diesel was the car I learned to drive at 12 years old. My first car was a VW Golf diesel - wish I still had it. Is there any way to rebuild the diesel engine? If not, I would personally go back with something as close to original as possible. Great work guys! Love the videos!
Hi 66 year old woman! I’m a 64 year old woman and I, too, love all these older cars. I’m a big fan of ‘68 Skylarks and ‘65 Mustangs. I love watching these guys work their magic.
As a European who grew up with the Golf/Rabbit, there's much to tell about them! We have very dedicated 'followers' of the "Golf 1' like VW Beetle owners. The diesel was a massive success here. VW was #1 installing a fast-revving diesel in a compact car. In fact, all other European brands (and even Japanese!) copied it. Most cars had a ±1600CC engine like the Golf. Super-low fuel consumption combined with interstellar trouble-fee milages. A total success. Later, turbo-diesel raised the performance (TDi), some versions were seriously quick cars! The diesel was not only for the Base 'D' model but for all levels of trim! There was even a GTd, the turbo-diesel version of the iconic GTi. And the GTd gave the GTi a run for its money! Next gens changed from 1.6D to 1.9D. Like the other European brands did. Like most classic VW products: there's a big market with restoration and after-market goodies. Wide fender + wheels; slammed cars; rat-rods and originals. You name it. The color of the car in the video + the dull interior scream: 'Westfalia tartan interior!' like you find in VW buses. The roof rack on your car: I've never seen that before! And I'm sure that some VW adepts' hearts will beat faster watching the roof rack! Then, the bumpers... the first things that get ditched in Europe. The EU specs bumpers are sleeker and positioned close to the body. Making it all look less cumbersome.
That little rabbit cleaned up really nice. If was my car I would put the the diesel back in it. I'm guessing the block was froze and cracked. Great video .
How cool! My second car in high school was a Rabbit! And just spent the afternoon cleaning up my daughter’s Mark IV Golf over here in Germany! Great video!
Always a pleasure watching you guys detail these barn finds. Btw comment section, anyone having screen tearing on WD videos, I notice it most on their videos?
Just purchased a bottle of Puro , and I can't wait to use it on my cars. Congrats on your new product, and I can't for many more soon into the future. Have a good one WD crew.
I tell you what that little Rabbit turned out great... These are super rare in the UK (we call it a Golf Mk1) I would love to see a follow up and a will it run or a side channel or collaboration with another local RUclipsr that could get it running and driving? Just an idea....
I had 3 pickups! (Still have 1) i loved my ‘80 pick up, that thing never let me down, i took it to car shows and people loved that thing. Sold it a few years back but it was great.
not going to lie. i thought that floor mat was black honestly. absolutly love the rabbits. i would love to restore one after i restore my 89 chevy s-10
You make it sound like buying a bunch of old cars from a barn is a sacrifice! Give me a break! There are few things more exciting than reviving an old car that's been sitting, just waiting for a delicate hand! I've been doing it for decades, I feel just as excited with every discovery. If you're not enjoying yourself, step aside I'd be happy to take your place!!!
I loved this episode . I used to drive a VW Rabbit Diesel 4 door about the same color. Great car and economical albeit you did not sneak up on anyone while driving it!
Live and grew up about 5 miles from the VW factory in Westmoreland Co., Pa. Had an uncle that worked there, and had a bunch of VW stuff till he passed.
In Brazil, this engine is the famous Ap engine (EA 827), also equipped in Ford vehicles through a transfusion between VW and Ford in the 90s (1989 to 1997), here this engine was produced until 2012 in the VW Gol, Parati and Saveiro , using flex fuel (gasoline and ethanol generating 107 hp) and diesel until 1991
If I had to swap an engine into that car it would probably be either a VW 1.9TD or a 1.9TDI as the N/A engines are gutless, I love the simplicity of the old VW diesels as they are great and fun for learning how to fix and maintain cars. My firs car is a 1990 Golf MK2 CL Diesel and when the original engine got worn out, my stepbrother put a 1.9TD AAZ engine in it and it runs great, you get really far on one tank of diesel. the car has now somewhere above 540 000 kilometers on the odometer, I learnt how to wrench on cars from it but sadly now the rust has become a big problem. when winter ends i will work on it again!
rebuild original engine for sure!!! hey try Wesleys whitewall cleaner...and all whitewalls are white white white..u can use Comet on stubborn whitewalls..along wuth the Wesleys..a stiff brush shud scrub the whitewalls clean with the Wesleys
15:25 Because of the welded in engine mount on the passenger side meant for 1.5L to 1.8L engines, a lot of engines of other volkswagens fit with minor changes. The engine you want depends what you want to achieve. For being the original engine from factory, the 50hp 1.5L code "CK" is the best engine. If you want a better engine while being similar, the 54hp 1.6L "CR or "JK" is the way to go. Preferably with a 5 speed gearbox. If you want more hp, you can swap to 69hp 1.6L Turbodiesel "CY", with a swap to 5 speed gearbox. One of the most interesting engine options without too much changing, is a 80hp 1.6L "SB" with turbo intercooler. If you want more, you can swap to 1.9 TDI "1Z", but because of the usually electronic controlled injection pump, its more difficult. But you can get 90hp / 110hp (with VTG Turbo). Another possible swap is to go to 112hp GTI petrol engine "DX". If you change the gearbox, consider changing to a 4+E gearbox, those have an "economy" 5th gear, longer ratio, lowering the engine noise. There are a couple of those gearboxes in a variety of gear ratios, e.g. "FF" "7A" or "4T". In a stock 54hp diesel, its just for cruising, acceleration to top speed in 4th gear. But with a much stronger engine, you can get high top speeds in highest gear. Dont forget the brakes. The front calipers of the GTI "VWII" are a reasonable change and have better parts availability. If you swap the engine to high hp, a brake swap to complete gti spec is probably a good idea. I personally, would swap to "CR / JK" 54hp diesel or "SB" 80hp, depends on what i could get. My mk1 is running with the 54hp engine fine. Just my 2 cents.
Had a VW MKII Golf and a Corrado VR6, absolutely love seeing these MKI kept alive. Maybe you can do a giveaway with some of these that werent done on video. Always wanted a MKI Rabbit 16v conversion myself. Maybe with the G60 supercharger added for extra VW street cred. Either way, good look guys loved the video👍
what a transformation! and i was still trying to understand what kind of car a "rabbit" was lol. so you guys in america knew the golf by that name? it's so funny honestly... anyway my father had a car with that paint, even tho it was a fiat. amazing detail, and congrats on your new product as well.
Rebuild that motor. Once you have it pulled you can rebuild it in just a couple hrs. I'm a diesel mechanic and have rebuilt tractor motors on the side for ppl. The day they drop it off if I have the parts then they pick it up the same day. The smaller diesels are so simple to work on.

I could do with the front and rear bumpers off the one that’s been lived in and chewed up if you’re breaking it

I am going to guess you don't know they were called the Caribe in Mexico then.@@mandy18573

You guys should do a complete rebuild of these things and document it and sell them! Would make a great video series!
Exactly 👌🏻👏🏻
I’d love to see a mechanical restoration of many of the cars you guys detail
Yeah I would love seeing you get it running and back on the road.
AGREE..make it happen guys..clean restore and sell all in 1 video..
you make much more money with a one day detail and flip.
I love seeing stock Mrk 1 Rabbits! So hard find unmodified.
Look to Mexico to find original cars. The Caribe GT is what the US GTI should have been.
Sheesh illegals ought to drive em over to make $$$$_
Being a TDI owner, I’d put the same engine back in it. Nice job guys! Love the videos! Keep them coming!

Vr6 swap i have helped a buddy do it several times and the sound and power in a mk1 is awesome
I have a 82 rabbit convertible. What year make model do i look for a vr6 to swap out my 1.7 liter 5 speed original motor?
You opening line is classic...."you guys don't know what we go thru....."....... Well, it's hard work and we love it, thank you so much for this! I love these Rabbits!!!!
Congratulations on releasing your product! It's awesome to hear that two of my favorite detailers to watch on RUclips developed it together!
Thank you Sara! We love our OG’s 😇
Who would have ever thought this would be entertaining? Apparently I’m hooked since discovering your videos a short time ago. It’s amazing what you can do with these cars.
OMG I remember these cars from the 80s .I wish they were still making them
We want to see all the other Rabbit cleaned too!!
Step by step rebuild of the engine! That'd make some amazing content!
My car's Spring Cleaning is scheduled March 29th XD
The VR6 option would be amazing. My Passat wagon had one and nobody expected a sleeper wagon at a red light, lol.
It will be cool to watching WD detail all five Volkswagen and see after look with them all together🎉😂
OMG, it's so nice seeing this beautiful car getting cleaned up, so satisfying. I'm from Serbia and those cars are really common here. Appreciate your work
Same here brother, as a Belgradian these and Mk2's are common to see driving around!
Drove a VW Golf diesel rental car in Germany in 2000-2001 and it was a dream. It could fly down the Autobahn. Good handling and good mileage.
FINALLY 😀 picked up a couple bottles. Thanks guys and thanks for all your videos! Take care and have a great week!

The before / after is really really impressive 🤩👍
Awesome job on the Rabbit I'd enjoy watching you clean all of them
That is so awesome!!! I love volkswagens. I would love to find a lot like that.

Another car I’ve always wanted. Seems like you guys are finding all the cool (to me) cars.
I had 3 pickups! (Still have 1) i loved my ‘80 pick up, that thing never let me down, i took it to car shows and people loved that thing. Sold it a few years back but it was great.
Is there anyway of you guys fixing these cars and make a video for us? I would definitely watch the video ❤
Absolutely amazing job guys!!! Looks awesome! Can’t wait to try the Puro too! 👍
Great save good job
Another great video guys. Congratulations on the product launch 🙂

Nice work !
I bet the old guy that collected these cars was looking down with a big smile when he saw how you restored it to look like new again. 👍😁
What a gem

You Did An Professional Job On This Car Sir Love Your Viedos Keep Up Please Sir Scott Erman
Get it tuned up and do a mpg test. . Great content keep them coming.
Great detailing on the VW. Your product looks like it works excellent. Thanks for video!
I would love ❤️ that Rabbit VW and rebuild the motor , a classic . Viewing from Detroit Michigan USA 🇺🇸 .
Would love one that is automatic. I love Volkswagen Rabbit
As a veedub guy, id love to see what happens to all of them.

There was probably a lot of those yellow ones made but it looks like my old one from way back. It was registered in Hinton, WV and Shady Springs,WV.

It has a 5 speed and the 4+E wide ratio version.
Purchased a gallon of puro today, looking forward to using it
Freaking rabbit 🐰 the result is just unbelievable, cant decide which impressed me more - in or out, just WOW 😮😮😮❤🎉 amazing job u did!
Wow, that paint really popped when you guys were done💯💯
Cleaned up amazing! Great job!!!
Those nests would have killed me with my allergies. Great work on beautiful classic VW's guys! Mark 1 daily driver for me!
what a transformation! and i was still trying to understand what kind of car a "rabbit" was lol. so you guys in america knew the golf by that name? it's so funny honestly... anyway my father had a car with that paint, even tho it was a fiat. amazing detail, and congrats on your new product as well.
