It’s funny when you pointed out how Danzig fucked up on N.I.B because He already did his version of it and it’s “Anything” from Danzig 3. Like if you read the lyrics it’s literally the same song just written differently but the intention is the same. Goes to show how far he fell from his glory days when he already paid respects to the greats, but as time went on he thought he could improve that song only to fail horribly lol.
Danzig 4 was the end of something so special, it was the top of the mountain. It was a masterpiece and a very important transition in my life. All down hill from there.
I have two Danzig tattoos and two Misfits tattoos, I’m a Christian man and my favorite band is Danzig, I used to be the biggest meth head and Danzig is great music for the devil’s drug, Glen is one of the greatest singer songwriters who ever lived, Chuck’s drumming is legendary, the drumming on devil’s plaything is unbelievable, they say never meet your heroes but I would love to meet Glen and John, I think these guys really shaped me as a musician, I’ve listened to mother a million times and it never gets old and I even have the lyrics not about to see your light tattooed on my back along with a huge Danzig skull on my upper back, I got my first Danzig tattoo as soon as I turned 18, way back in the day, I sold my guitar and amp to pay for the tattoo
Yea - 1st 4 LP's rule - My band opened for Danzig's 1st show proper @City Gardens, NJ (1988/89?) / I walked into soundcheck as he was doing Trouble (Elvis cover)
Danzig is the shit and always will be . Always did what he wanted and never cared about peoples opinions. Dude wrote more catchy and badass songs than most artist ever do or will. Can’t touch him.
Your retrospective documentaries on all things Danzig are spot on! Loved the Samhain and Misfits one you did as well. Glad I stumbled on your videos my friend. 🔥😎🔥
Glenn Danzig has always meant a lot to me too. I have been listening to his music since childhood. I have met him several times, I have a collection of his comic books. I have his necklace. (Like literally, he gave one to me when I was in my 20s, it’s a real silver upside down cross with a Danzig skull on it ) He was my favorite singer until Till Lindemann showed up. I also listen to Eerie Vons music.
4 was soooooo mysterious. I love the cardboard sleeve too. I wore the black danzig shirt with the white skull. For 4 yrs in high school. I seriously thought it was lucky l o l
Last year I was super sick and found your channel and fell in love with your content and I’m beyond happy that you made a Danzig retrospective. It made my Halloween. I would love if you made a Replacements retrospective at some point. Keep up the good work!
Say what you want about Danzig, he is one of the most influential musicians and creators ever to love. The misfits, Samhain and Danzig are seminal works that have influenced numerous artists.
Great vid as always! Seeing this video made me really happy because I went on a bit of a Danzig binge last year but lately over the last month or so I’ve been returning to the first 3 records and the EP a lot, and enjoying them more and more with every listen. Lucifuge is probably my favorite as of late. The blend between blues and metal sounds so good and unique, I love it so much.
I did enjoy this! I Luciferi and Circle of Snakes are great records in my opinion. I think the lowfi elements of the later records were a reaction to the positive response to the Misfits reunions. Thanks for the grear video and happy Halloween!
I always listen to Black Angel White Angel in particular that song is great. I don’t mind the Deth Red Sabaoth album either, I never had a lot of issue with his later stuff at all like a lot of people.
Yeah….love old school Danzig! Rick Rubin really shaped the early sound of Danzig. After Danzig and rick parted ways , Danzig really went downhill. Danzig really had some interesting lyrics in the misfits, Samhain and early Danzig. The original group had great chemistry also. The first 2 albums really stood out in the midst of glam metal. Love the early stuff! Thanks !
Glenn Danzig was the gift that kept on giving. From The Misfits, Samhain, Danzig to his obvious influence in music in the past 40+ years. Was a huge Misfits fan as a teen and found Samhain and Danzig cassettes while roaming around in a huge Goodwill bin outside of a wally world, pretty sure they’re somewhere around my parent’s house. Even though I rarely listen to punk nowadays, I’ll jam Misfits or albums Misfits/Danzig obviously influenced like AFI’s Black Sails../Art of Drowning/Shut Your Mouth… any day.
I saw Danzig on the first two tours and in 1999 when his voice had seen better days. I last saw him in 2005 and during the open notes of How The Gods Kill I yelled Yeah! Glenn gave me a knowing nod and gave the best single performance I ever saw in person.
Glen kinda turned into a characature of himself. He should have recorded the Elvis covers 30 years earlier. I do pick up the Elvis influence in his vocals but more so Jim Morrison (the doors) Lucifuge was my jam back when it came out.
I like the vocals on bodies 😂😂 Love Danzig Thank you man !!!!🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟 I as well loved Danzig 4 !! You did a great job covering what others didnt bud or covering black laden crown !!! I like black laden more than you i think it and deth red are his best since danzig 4 🤟🤟🤟
I know I am very much in the minority here, but I do like every Danzig record, to some extent. Nothing compares to the classic era, but each album after still has good stuff. Mind you, the more recent albums would have been better served with a different producer/engineer, as those albums tend to have a smothered kind of sound. Also, the abuse he heaped on his voice for so many years has taken its toll and it is very obvious on those later albums.
The first 4 Danzig albums are nothing but classic!!! After the original band broke up he never got that Magic back. There’s still some great music afterwards but nothing like those first 4.
I am really forgiving when it comes to Danzig...but it ended after Danzig 4 for me....especially after seeing him live after that..with or without Doyle...Things ended for me after seeing him live at the Lokerse Feesten in Belgium and throwing a hissy fit..actual leaving Doyle clueless on stage on his own...
My sister got my the first press of Danzig on Def American records from a $1 bin at a Pawn Shop in 1999 just cause she knew I would love the cover. I still have it in it's original case (how I never cracked it is beyond me) but I must have listened to it at least 500 times and it's not scratched at all on the playing surface. It's gotta be protected by some demon force cause it's 36 years old now and for a cd that was once at a radio station copy it still sounds amazing.
I go back and forth on which is my favorite album between 1 and 2. For consistency I would have to say the first album is my favorite, but for music and soul the second is my go to.
How could you not go over Brand New God and Bringer of Death for Danzig 4 . They are heavy as f-ck and the only good tracks in an otherwise weak and poser album. But that criticism aside, I really enjoyed your video! Well done and I'm glad you were able to use audio clips from the albums! Something in me makes me want to see a King Diamond retrospective from you, for some reason 😂
I used to hate Danzig. Then I heard blood and tears and everything clicked. Now I love Danzig. It’s been like that for decades. Saw the misfits last year and I cried when they played Hybrid Moments.
Danzigs balladistic songs are among his best output period ..blood and tears she rides going down to die too nany to list...I won't lie blood and tears made lucifuge fir me .and started my obsession with bc rich guitars. Along with Kerry King and Tom araya ..i can't separate danzig from bc rich ..Erie von and John both bitches warlocks and mockingbirds. That shit formulated my idea of dark and heavy
If you keep up the trend of rockstars obsessed with horror movies and Halloween, a White Zombie retrospective would be absolutely awesome. I feel like they never get enough credit despite being as popular as they were
My favorite danzig story is from a friend of mine. He was listening to Misfits and his wife said that sounds like danzig" lol. Occasionally we'll bring it up for a laugh.
I saw the original Danzig line-up in October in 1992 and it was the best show I have ever been to. Saw Danzig about ten years later and it was really bad. His voice was really rough.
Snakes of Christ and Sex type thing are more borrowed from War Machine (Kiss). STP changed the last note or two in the progression, but I think Danzig kept it the same or similar.
Enjoyed the vid! It got me to check out the Danzig debut after also growing up with and only knowing Mother in the Guitar Hero games and vaguely knowing maybe a few other tracks. Holy hell, what a record - I really love the Doors-meets-Sabbath vibes of it all. Shame to hear his voice degraded so much over the years!! That Elvis cover album... yeesh 😬
Great recap! Agree that the 1st 4 albums are gold. Red Deth Sabaoth is good as well. Outside of that I don't care for anything else in the discography.
In regard to the lost tracks of Danzig album, the only notable song from there is Deep because it appeared on GTAV's radio station hosted by the singer of the Strokes (which also had TV Casualty from the Misfits too)
4 was important to me personally, as john left i did notice he is an unsung guitarist. That was a time piece record if you followed his work till that point. After that i just cherry picked, that hidden tracks album was damn good entirely. You have to love the guy, especelly when glenn lived around the neighborhood, those cat and bricks pictures defenitely disgruntled neighbors. I thought you were doing davey havoc look, but yea i could see your danzig influence ❤
Dude.. you are quite correct on most things, except you dont have to be 80 to be a fan of the King! Anywayz, must have been 90 when i heard them on random mix tapes my cousin made and we played over n over. I didnt really know who they were till 93, and i didnt know they toured that year and would not tour again for another 13 years (and havent since). Got into 1-4 heavily, as well as MiSFiTs due to MetallicA Garage Days. Retro listened to Samhain which I like but my friends didnt. D4 i pretty much gave everyone at University a listen and they all loved it. D5 came out and i get told "it outsold the others" but rreally no one bought it for what it was, they bought it cos of the great one D4 was prior. I kept into it even though there was some average tunes, but then Skeletons came out, i think I listened to it once and have not bothered since. I waited for years for the Elvis album hoping it was going to be like "Metal Elvis" with Chance Tinder but no it was far from it. Infact, I do not think i have listened to it completely, i song skipped and FFWD some of it and have never played it since. I got an autographed copy which is the only reason i still have it. I wear the mark, but its been hard for awhile. And when you look on social media, the most vocal fans seem to be ones where not everything is OK upstairs thats for sure.. Not sure i am looking forward for any future albums, but theres still a number of good songs so far I can still listen to. Thanks for the good run down.
The first 2 Danzig records are Rock Masterpieces! 3 is a good solid record but the band was kind of repeating itself. 4 is underrated, a great progression from 3. Truly a record that grows on you after every listen. Overall a fantastic run of records from the original line up. And then Danzig completely went downhill😟🌑🔥
Good overview.. I know its not discography but the Misfits reunion shows where a whole beast onto themselves.. Like most fans, I think the first 4 albums were awesome... in the later years there's a couple tracks off the last few albums that I think are great but his overall sound has diminished.
About Blackacidevil having so much vocal distortion. You mentioned in How The Gods Kill you can hear Glen's voice going out. On 4 (also my favorite Danzig album so you're not alone there), he downright sounds like Barney from The Simpsons a few times. I kinda wonder if he was getting some doubts about his voice by that point.
NOT the easiest guy to be a fan of... But, doesn't get a fraction of the credit he deserves. He churned out good, oft great, work in multiple genres. Fr. MISFITS inception right-on through DANZIG IV
I think another influence on Danzigs industrial sound was White Zombie. Listen to Belly of the Beast from Satans child next to Blood Milk and Sky from Astro Creep 2000. Very similar.
Hello, quite a decent rundown. I'm not sure you're old enough to call it a "retrospective" but still well done. I've listened to Glenn Danzig's music for over thirty years and I completely agree with your praises and absolute harsh criticism of the later Danzig records. I live by the first 4 records and everything he did with the misfits and samhain. And I remember being so excited for Danzig 5 and how utterly disappointed I was when I got it the day it was released. Absolutely fucking atrocious, as was 6. I tried so hard to like them and I couldn't. Fuck I even liked the two records the misfits did with graves. I dug a song or two off of 7 and 8 but I think the best thing he did since 4 was Death Red, I really liked about half of the album and I could give or take the rest. I think one of the main reasons why it was so good is that he tried so hard to emulate the original Danzig band sound, specifically JOHN CHRIST. Everything else has been borderline unlistenable and I completely agree that he should stay away from production. I don't understand why he wants everything to sound like it was recorded in a construction site porta potty. You'd think someone with that kind of vocal and songwriting prowess would also like the best of not at least decent production. And he might have always been a cult hero but he owes much of the somewhat mainstream success that he has achieved to people like Rick Rubin, John Christ and Chuck. The misfits reunion shows are cool but I think many people would agree that an original Danzig reunion is what the world needs. Thank you and take care.
During industrial and techno. I didn't even listen to Danzig. I moved on and figured if anything worth hearing happened, I would hear it. Nothing happened. I just wanted to find new music styles, and I was content. The first 3 albums were about it. Enough said..
Happy Halloween!
🎃
Absofukinlutely!!! Thanks 4 the treat @scoopedmids

Samhain is pronounced “sow-in”, as in ow-in.
Danzig 4 was the end of something so special, it was the top of the mountain. It was a masterpiece and a very important transition in my life. All down hill from there.
It’s beautiful
Danzig 4 is my favorite too. The 4 first albums are classic metal masterpieces. 🤘
there's something hilarious yet sweet about Doyle sitting in an old-school rockabilly circle for Glenn's show.

I actually really liked it. It was so vastly different and Ashes is one of my favorite Danzig songs so there’s that.
Mother.... turn ur notifications on tonight!!!! Whoa, like it.....
Thanks for this. This band was very influential to me growing up as a teen in the 90s.
"suicidal ideation has never been more pleasing to the ears" 😂
Cool retrospective. Those first 4 Danzig albums are something special.
You should have more subs for the quality videos you put out
Thanks, homie.
Brother great video ! Really enjoyed this and very well put together.

It’s kind of like the Simpson where the early years were the best then season 9 happened and it never recovered.

Christ and biscuits. What more u need!
Cantspeak background secquence is Let it be Catured guitar riff reversed, pretty awesome!!
I think another influence on Danzigs industrial sound was White Zombie. Listen to Belly of the Beast from Satans child next to Blood Milk and Sky from Astro Creep 2000. Very similar.
Cantspeak was a minor hit and received some airplay on MTV. Definitely the closest thing they came to having a hit on this album.
*best IF not at least decent production
During industrial and techno. I didn't even listen to Danzig. I moved on and figured if anything worth hearing happened, I would hear it. Nothing happened. I just wanted to find new music styles, and I was content. The first 3 albums were about it. Enough said..
LOVE D4, that and the first are the 2 best
