Dude these are so awesome! Watched the misfits retrospective and Samhain retrospective b2b. Do a Danzig one! Sure Danzig 5-9 or whatever last album came out are well, to put it lightly, each one is probably better than the next. Still it’s worth doing a retrospective! Also do a type-o-negative one!
I remember feeling like such an outcast badass wearing the November Coming Fire tee shirt as a kid. Looking back I realize I was just a nerd that knew about some pretty cool music🤷♂️😂
Same... "discovered" Samhain in '93 at a garage sale - cassette tape w/ no sleeve for 25¢. Within 6 months, had all 3 albums, an "Initium" poster (which my mom wouldn't let me put up in my room, lol), and the "november coming fire" T-shirt. No one I knew knew about Samhain, not even the metalhead who turned me on to punk/metal; I was a cult of one for years!
November coming fire is one of my all time fav records. The influence it had on certain artists AFI, integrity, vvegas, ringworm and the band called November coming fire.
Danzig didn't write the music for that album ncf. He bought the music from another duo of artists from the early 60s. I can't rember there name but it's a fact
I was at the very first Samhain show at the Rock Hotel in NYC in early 1984 (or very late 83, can’t remember exactly), Lyle Pressler from Minor Threat played guitar for that show. It was epic, we knew it was going to be big.
Archangel is one of my absolute favorite songs! My second favorite Samhain song is To Walk the Night! Luckily, I bought the Samhain Box set when it came out in 2000ish. I lost the cool box the CDs came in 😢 but I still have the CDs!! Those CDs are gold! I also copied the music to my laptop so I can burn new ones if the original CDs kick the bucket! I would be very sad if I couldn’t listen to Samhain whenever I want to. About Halloween II, when I was in middle school in ‘93, my art teacher saw I had wrote down the lyrics for that song in my notebook, and since he knew some Latin, he translated the lyrics for me 😂…that was awesome of him!
I saw Danzig and Venom in Portland OR back in 2017 shit was fucking epic. He played all my favorite songs. And even ripped a few deep cuts out like Dirty Black Summer and How The Gods Kill. He also play 20 Eyes from the Misfits. Sadly he did not play any Samhain. But with so many great albums how do you play them all? LOL Funny enough I did not know about Samhain tell late high school back in 2011. Kinda Funny when you been jamming to Danzig since middle school only to find out he had other bands laughs. Great breakdown cheers! Happy late Halloween!!!!
I definitely think Samhain is probably my favorite material of Danzig's writing output. The atmosphere on NCF is solid and unique. It's own thing. I revisit it more then any of Glenn's releases. I saw them live in '99 which was a high point in my concert attendance experiences. Great job on this Retro. I'm definitely looking forward to your Danzig Retro next!! At least those first four releases!!
Good research here. I wonder if you’ve seen my video, “To Walk the Night: A Tribute to Samhain.” You’d enjoy it! Hopefully Cleopatra reissues these albums in a timely fashion.
Saw them on the Season of the Dead Tour in 85 and the Shift when they paused was tense then when it kicked back in crowd went crazy. Samhain live or Misfits? Samhain definitely! I have my original Unholy Passion White Vinyl in burgundy cover I play on occasion. My favorite Samhain release. Never for sale! ;-)
So many excellent Samhain songs but for me The Howl is the best. The timing of the instruments feels off and that makes the song. I saw Samhain open for Danzing in '99. They did the show covered in blood. Then Glen came back out with Danzig. It was incredible.
I hate when people shit on Danzig it bothers me the man deserves all the credit he has got over the years people now will praise nirvana over alot of the work danzig has done
Samhain is a great band that is sadly overlooked. I have Initium, Unholy Passion EP, and November Coming Fire and appreciated Glenn's journey from punk rock to metal. The dark atmosphere, occult lyrics and experimental musicianship gave Samhain a leg up on its peers. A perfect retrospective for the Autumn season and I look forward to your Danzig retrospective.
Misery Tomb is the bass and background vocals from I Am Misery. You can hear the full track bleeding through the headphones in the vocal booth of the studio at certain parts. Really cool.
As a 48yr old, you always get me hyped to listen to stuff ive listed to a million times and kinda moved on from. Like "Oh yeah, those are incredible albums..." Well written script dude. 👏
Great video. For any one interested in listening to these albums I hear if you type keywords Samhain Blog, there may be a blogspot that may or may not be hosting these albums in mp3 form. These need to be re released, maybe it will happen, Danzig has recently had Danzig 5, 6, 7, Circle of Snakes, Black Aria and Who killed Marilyn pressed by Cleopatra Records, so hopefully these gems are in the works.
I wrote a review of the Samhain boxset on the e-music website which was publishing his music at the time, they used it (without my name or information) as a "this is what a fan says about the boxset" on their site which was cool, but I said some of the things you highlight here.. a stripped down gothic horror masterpiece full of dread and oozing with evil percussion ...I think truly some of Glenn's best work. Most people don't know about the Less than zero soundtrack, so thanks for mentioning it.. another track a lot of people haven't heard is the song Father's Grave by Melissa Auf der Maur which includes Danzig's vocals and unfortunately didn't get the airplay it deserved. It can be found here on youtube and Glenn's vocals stand out over everything else.
I definitely love these in depth introspectives! Keep it up!! As someone (47 years old now) who has loved the Misfits since 13 years of age. I stumbled upon Samhain via the archangel track.
I was going to ask you. Ps good to see young people into the Damned, all things Danzig til 4. Twisted Sister. Etc Hell I bought Club Daze because of watching you. And the Twisted Sister documentary in the same week. Couple years back.
Initium & NCF are my favorites 🔥🔥🔥 Initium is probably my favorite but they usually bounce back and forth between the two. I have that Black Dream bootleg cd that has the original mix of Unholy Passion ep plus a lot of rare stuff. I’m so happy I bought all the Samhain releases back in the day cause the prices are crazy now lol I have all the original cd first pressings plus the 2000 reissue cds, the boxset and original lps along with a bunch of bootlegs lol
You did a fantastic analysis of this period of Glenn’s career. Samhain might be my favourite of his three bands. Keep up the good work! I also have a channel where I analyze music and movies.
November-Coming-Fire is the very first Glenn related record I ever heard. It had a profound impact on me. I'll never forget listening to it for the first time
Oh...I was very, very, lucky. Downtown San Diego had a mom & pop record store that had all the weird and all that was rare. I cast my eyes about, and what did I spy (in '99 going on 2000?) The Samhain BOX SET? $79.99? Oh, believe me. I pulled out my money faster than a sailor pulled out of a cheating wife. Descent became my favorite album. How about the rest of you?
My buddy dropped the 80$, so I could cheap out and have hime record rhem onto disc fir me. But...all these years later they are scratched up and worn out, and I am screwed. I did have INITIUM on cd, but it went the way of Amelia Erhardt( the lost pilot lady? No idea how to spell it).
I'm lucky enough to own a copy of the original 1990 final descent (with the unholy passion EP as the second half). And for some reason, it remains my all time favorite of the Samhain albums.
This and the misfits one were great!!! A Danzig one would be nice too. Yes, the first 4 albums are essential, I'll give you 5, 6, 7, and not being great, I think they're fine but whatever. However, circle of snakes and Deth Red Saboath are killer! After that, the rest is terrible.🤣🤣🤣
Good job dude. Thank you. Danzig V is incredible but i understand not initially liking it. Its actually his closest album to a Samhain album. Hint of her blood, sacrifice and Serpentia are some of his finest work. His vocals took a backseat to the overall production but it will slowly grow on you. See all you were is Samhain. I love all of Glenn's work except Circle of Snakes. Lol
I love Danzig from his music to who he is. He clearly understands his own art but at the same time he’s one of the biggest trolls lmfao that man lives to piss people off 😂
James telling the story of getting lyrics from Glen is hilarious cause he said every time they'd reach out to get a lyrics sheet, it would be ddifferent lol
Tis the season. Last year I played Misfits and Damned covers at several open mics but this year I was too busy working. Must be time to quit haha. I will see if I can learn Mother Of Mercy on electric guitar. My acoustic punk covers are a bit lacking. Stay hungry and poor, fiends.
Fuckin' thank you for doing these retrospective videos I literally just stumbled across your channel and this being my 2nd video of yours I've watched it just like the first video (misfits retrospective) had me stopped what I was doing and literally glued to it thanks... Next video is going to be a fucking real tear jerker (The Smiths Retrospective) Thanks again for the time and effort you put into your videos P.s FUCKIN SAMHAIN IS Danzig at his fucking finest 😊

If i could off on a tangent here; I'm not a conspiracy theorist but im well versed into what heroin does to you. It's not like meth or PCP, where doing too much can put you into a psychotic state or make you tweak out. You do too much dope and you just go out cold. Even when You're just high you're basically a puddle on the couch. When a junkie kills someone and it's linked to their drug use, 99% of the time it's because they're out of drugs and desperate, not because they're high. This isn't an argument against the belief that Sid viscous killed his GF, just that he did it because he was high. Edit: oh yeah, and that doctor in the documentary about the conspiracy theory that Kurt Cobain was murdered and didn't commit suicide either didn't know what he was talking about, or was just bullsh*ting everyone when he said there was too much heroin in his system for him to be able to use the shotgun. What would kill the average person wouldn't be enough to even stave off the withdrawal symptoms for a junkie.
10/10, great job on this video brother. I’ve been a huge Danzig/Samhain fan for nearly 20 years and even learned a few things in this video. Your hard work paid off! Great job
It sucks the box has a vhs instead of a dvd. I’ve only watch it once. Btw final decent box version and original are two totally different albums. Track listing and omitting and or re/recording/ remixing the unjoly passion tracks. I bought my first copy back in 1990ish and couldn’t get into it much. Kind off put off getting into them until later prob 1993.
I know this is an old video but I totally agree with you that it would be nice if you could release the Samhain albums on example Spotify or RUclips music. November-Coming-Fire is one of the vinyls that I would like to have but I cant afford it ^^ . Thanks a lot of a really good video I liked the one you did about Misfits as well
Unholy Passion was re-recorded so Pete and London wouldn't sue him for royalties...only a few copies are out there,November fire w/unholy passion cassette is the original recordings. The dvd didn't cost $30.00 your issue should be pointed at the seller,I bought it at best buy when it came out 19 years ago...$13.00 bucks.
Been a fan of Samhain since 1991. Got into them retroactively after being really into the first Danzig solo album. Over the years, Danzig's solo material is among the few bands from my youth that I've grown out of...while I still love Samhain as much as ever. It takes the Misfits vibe and gives it even more atmosphere and depth. In my opinion Rick Rubin ruined a really great group in Samhain. Edit: Disagree with some parts of this review. Unholy Passion is one of the best releases by the group IMO and I don't see Final Descent as "demo quality' at all. I like the version of Possession better than the Danzig version. Love the aforementioned Unholy Passion tracks. The track Descent is awesome and I have no problem with the drum machines as I'm a big fan of industrial and other forms of electronic music production. I'd hate to break it to you but there are also drum machines on a few Novermber's Coming Fire songs due to London May not being able to play some of the tribal rhythms Glenn wanted him to play. But hey you were none the wiser. For those starved for more Samhain material, there's also the excellent November's Coming Fire demos....some of the versions on that sound as good if not better than the album versions.
12:57 Funny you say that because Unholy Passion was my starting point with Samhain. I own a bootleg copy on vinyl and was the first Samhain release I listened to.
I don't know why you actually mentioned Misery Tomb when talking about the Unholy Passion EP as it wasn't on the initial release. It was released for the first time on the B Side of Final Descent. It's just the I Am Misery back vocals with some random bass. If you listen to the song on. high volume you can actually hear I am Misery playing in the background. Probably leaking from the headphones in studio.
Man , I had that boxset you showed a glimpse of at the beginning . Some bastard stole it from my house ! I REALLY wish I knew who did it . But that was 20 years ago ! Karmageddon I hope rains down on him .
Yo. If you are interested in the Eerie Von book, the publisher of the book, Bazillion Points, are planning to reprinting the book in Spring, this year. I got my copy from them, last year. Awesome book. Also, Amazon prices can eat a dick.
Danzig invented his own world and every time I listen to his music, I am transformed to that world.....Not many bands can do that
GAY
King Diamond and maybe Dio? I think Glen Danzig is up there with them
Yeah, Dio did that too. King Diamond as well event hough he isnt my cup of tea@@kyleisreal_tv

Seen Samhain twice, both in Chicago. First show at the Metro in 1986 the other was at riot fest 2014.
November coming fire is one of my all time fav records. The influence it had on certain artists AFI, integrity, vvegas, ringworm and the band called November coming fire.

He was trying to be Nine Inch Nails. It's was way worse though.

I’m lucky to own all Samhain records! My favorite tune of theirs is “To Walk the Night”
I seen the 99’ reunion tour( phx,AZ ) plus the 2014 reunion tour in philly,PA. I can die happy. The cherry on top. I got the bloody towel and setlist.
Seen them in Providence. Got Glenn's blood cup. Plastic Budweiser cup with GD written in black marker.

Angelfuck is another one that’s in the top 5
I’m of the opinion that To Walk the Night is his finest moment
My favorite of the 3 Danzig projects. I've got my minty copy of the boxed set.
The music and darker tone was just so good
November Coming Fire is my favorite Samhain album. It's better than Earth AD. It's better than any post-4P Danzig albums.
The Hungry End is amazing.

Late as 1991 Samhain III was in Camelot and Disc Jockey record stores. (Corporate Mall stores)
Halloween II, Chef's Kiss. What a delight!

Ayyyyyy
Human pony girl!
Samhain is my favorite, just the whole feel to it. On side note any Samhain fan I recommend check out Zombeast, especially their newest album

Funny you say that because Unholy Passion was my starting point with Samhain. I own a bootleg copy on vinyl and was the first Samhain release I listened to.
Sorry for new fans. I have it all original vinyl, some misfits and danzig and almost all of Glenn's work pre 2000 on disc
Karmageddon I hope rains down on him .
samhain box set goes for around 400 now
@@DrMurdercock Go figure ! Thats my luck . I bought it used for 25 bucks .
Interesting... archangel always struck me as one of the more upbeat tracks not sad ones. Hmmm.
Human Pony Girl is one of their best. You mentioned it but didi't play it or talk about it…ruclips.net/video/sprR3FqwuIg/видео.html
Did he consult with anyone from Ireland before he named the band? At least he spelled it right
I saw Samhain once in Chicago it got old real fast. Back in the day I was at
That Show I in 1986. at the Metro
I think the stuff The Misfits did with Michael Graves is better than anything Danzig did solo.
Yo. If you are interested in the Eerie Von book, the publisher of the book, Bazillion Points, are planning to reprinting the book in Spring, this year. I got my copy from them, last year. Awesome book.
Also, Amazon prices can eat a dick.
I hope those Beatles & Smiths posters behind you are up there for a joke...
They're not, but your mom's pussy is a joke.
I’ll never understand ppl who restrict themselves to a specific genre it’s such a goofball mentality but hey you do you
17:25 speaking of Zombeast did a nice cover of Mother of Mercy
To walk the night. Solitary friend. Night ethereal world without end forever more. Forever.
