HULK HOGAN MADE A RAP ALBUM??!?1!!?/
As a huge prog rock fan, I have a soft spot for The Elder.
This is an age-old thing, though. In the age of the blues men (though women were the first blues performers in the minstrels to be recorded) there were already standards, or songs that everyone knew, in the ether. Most often, ownership, authorship, and rights went to the first guy who recorded and published it. In the 20s of last century, Alan Lomax started doing field recording for the library of Congress, finding all of these regional songs, that were either original, or bore some resemblance to European songs, but changed fundamentally over time. After a while, he realized that other people were grabbing publishing rights when they were up for grabs. So then Alan Lomax started his publishing imprint, making a fortune off of these songs he was hired to find for the LOC. It was around this time that AP Carter also noticed his scheme and contacted him about going into business, as AP Carter was aware of 1000s of unpublished songs, after he learned the ropes of the trade, had his imprint and would go on long excursions "song collecting" and so it goes that one of the greatest American songwriters was little more than a songwriter and a prolific thief. It was also around this time that a guy named Leadbelly pulled a knife on Lomax because of the money he had made on "his songs" which again, he didn't write, but had been collecting for quite some time in the prisons he had stayed in, and as a professional performer on the early chitlin' circuit... at which point, Lomax helped him do the same, so Leadbelly could publish his own as well. That's why you will see alan Lomax's name on thousands of songs, even though he couldn't sing or play music at all... there were clerks at the library of congress that would help in registering the songs contents by analyzing the melody and chord structures to accompany the recordings. Making it very easy for Lomax to just simply file the papers in his name. And once again... a great writer in the american canon is pretty much another thief. Then there are people like Jimmy Rogers... doing the very same thing, but and i'm more western style, and that becomes country music. And when Elvis recorded a song called, That's All Right, Mama, one of the watershed moments in the invention of rock and roll, he was combining styles of country, blues and new electric sounds of what would become Rockabilly. However the song's writer, big boy cruddup, had borrowed the lyrics and melody from an earlier, more obscure blues song, changing very little, but having secured publishing through RCA (also Elvis' label later) he was credited with the song. This was after he had learned of this technique from a guy named tampa red, who some consider the creator of the original chicago, blues scene and sound. Who heard the guy playing on the street one day and offered him some advice, invited him over ended a songwriter workshop with the guy over several days, in which he explained how blues is largely mainly recycled tropes with a little extra personal experience and twists in the style that you prefer... he explained that there's not much ownership in the area of a blues song... new ones sprout from old ones... as he owned hundreds of songs and collected handsome royalty checks on that basis every month. A week later, Cruddup walked out a changed man, playing his own style of blues, and a book of new songs he wrote with Tampa, all of which bore striking resemblances to pre existing songs in the area... songs that he had been exposed to and that other musicians knew and later mentioned by name... but as he went to rca, to record them, he was awarded publishing for all of those... it gets really twisted, the more you go down the rabbit hole... until you have a guy named Alan Klein, encouraging, george harrison to record the song, my sweet lord, even though harrison head recently become aware that he may have unconsciously plagiarized the song, he's so fine. Klein said it's all about ownership, and that he doubted that even if there were similarities that anyone could successfully sue him over that. So harrison recorded it and released it, shortly after his falling out with alan klein, along with the rest of the beatles, he was summarily and almost immediately sued for releasing it, as klein had bought publishing rights to the song "He's so fine" shortly after Harrison had mentioned his misgivings... that's right... klein encouraged him to plagarize the song he had already bought the publishing rights to! Which not surprisingly, was written as an answer song to the the Falcons "you're so fine", button bore a little resemblance. It was written by a 23 year old man named Ronnie Mack. Ronnie was a very poor black man who had been seen at the outsides of various record label buildings offering his songs to sell people of the day. One of the only songs we are aware of is the song Puppy Love, recorded by Paul Anka... and listed as Paul Anka, as the writer. It was a huge hit around 1960. It was reported that ronnie mack had sold songs to several labels through individuals who would buy them. The song He's so Fine, was his first chance actually Write publish and record his own song. In his typical style, he approached a group. Known as the tokens with his songs and his booklet full of them. He said not only did he have a song now, but he had a group to record it. The Chiffons were a group that he assembled, with three singers that all went to school together at the local high school. He found one more singer to add to them, and the session was assembled with the tokens playing musical accompaniment for the first time, as they were known as a vocal group, with a session drummer that they hired. Because of the hit, they had called The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Capital Records had extended them a contract for ten new singles to produce or record themselves. This was their tenth attempt... all of them had flopped and capital passed on releasing this one. Sensing, they had a hit, they had walked it all over town to all the major studios and labels, and none took them up until they reached the small label Laurie Records. The label owner locked the door when he heard the song and said he wasn't going to let the guy leave until he had the right to release it. It became by some accounts, the largest-selling single of 1963. Three days after it hit the number-one spot in the singles charts, Ronnie Mack died of cancer in the hospital. Age 23. He had yet to receive a single royalty check, despite allegedly penning several huge hits. Later, his song as well as the entire label it was released on was bought by a vindictive man Alan Klein, to sue the last Beatle who "betrayed him". When John had recoiled from him, Klein bought the collected works of Alejandro Jodorowsky because he and John had seen The Holy Mountain in the theater and both liked it. He soon saw to it that the movie was never seen again. I wonder who on my list here has even heard of that movie? It's considered one of the classics in cinematography. I don't believe it has had a proper release since its original showing in theaters. In closing, I recommend that if you love music, you should hate lawyers. At least the ones that litigate and normalize the theft of intellectual property. Right now, there's a group called the Chiffons, as well as the Coasters... the Drifters... Foreigner, Little River Band...etc -that are unaffiliated with the original artists of that band. Lawyers are the reason music sucks now. If you know where a lawyer is buried, I recommend visiting them and making a wee-wee in tribute. If you know where a living lawyer is, I recommend the same! They're probably used to it. The old damp salute!
That riff was probably originally played by a guy dressed in skins on two hollow logs, because drums (membranophones) hadn't been invented yet... mainly because they didn't have extra skins... but when they finally did... that was the riff they played... and then enraged, Gorog hit Kraal over the head with his hollow log, otherwise known as "settling out of court".
Greed led Glenn to going broke. There’s nothing like the original lineup.
Dave is a better musician. Metallica are better song writers. Metallica couldn't play Holy Wars if their lives depended on it, but Dave could never write something as epic and beautiful as Orion. For this reason I prefer Metallica, but Megadeth are the "better" band by most heavy metal metrics.
Bac when u were a blink in ur moms eye, u write a few Hutus that were good for radio then u will tour whenever u want to forever, kickstart my heart was huge, and their popularity was huge, then that was it. If u ever been addicted to anything, ur young, don’t even try painkillers after a surgery, they r super addicting, I know and had to get help, it changes u, it got very old touring sober for them and they ran out of material, plus the 4 were not very smart like Metallica, but w what they got handed to them with mtv, magazines, ect, my generation just wants to c them again, and get more albums, usually, but my like for crue fell way down as well, my daughter went to c them and she said Judas Priest was 20 times better, they deserve to get ripped, so u did good
nevernoticed the real bassguitar on sacred... that's beautiful! thanks :)
Yeah the artwork sucks just as bad as the album it represents. It’s actually quite fitting cuz it lets you know the album is gonna be pure crap just like the cover.
The Jam were never EVER a punk band. They were a Mod band that played on the same bills as and got famous at the same time as some Punk bands. Thatcher didnt run Britain until May 1979. New Rose predates her being in power by 3 years. #JustSaying
Your retrospective documentaries on all things Danzig are spot on! Loved the Samhain and Misfits one you did as well. Glad I stumbled on your videos my friend. 🔥😎🔥
Danzig 1 is a banger of an album. Start to finish it’s great. Danzig 2 is a continuation for me of the first. I love it start to finish but my all time fav Danzig tracks are from 1. I know people say his voice was beginning to turn on Danzig 3 and Bodies is a ln example but I actually still think his voice fits so well with the music and Bodies is a banger on its own. Love me some Danzig even when he got punched by the dude From Northside Kings in the early 00’s and it was kinda uncool to love Danzig as a hardcore kid like myself I still repped Danzig throughout. I can separate the music from the artist personally which is how I can still like Ryan Adam’s music without liking him as a person. He is kind of a creep which is so weird to me. You are married to Mandy Moore and can probably get with a million beautiful women but you’d rather rob the cradle with teenage girls. What does a 40+ year old man have in common with a girl thats in high school? It makes no sense to me. Creep. That being said Danzig is not a creep and he might have been an asshole to the dude from Northside Kings and maybe he is an asshole to many people I don’t know. I love his music and that’s good enough for me.
Baker's Dozen... 1. KISS ALIVE! (1975) 2. ROCK AND ROLL OVER (1976) 3. DRESSED TO KILL (1975) 4. KISS (1974) 5. HOTTER THAN HELL (1974) 6. LOVE GUN (1977) 7. DYNASTY (1979) 8. ALIVE II (1977) 9. DESTROYER (1976) 10. CREATURES OF THE NIGHT (1982) 11. MUSIC FROM THE ELDER (1981) 12. UNMASKED (1980) 13. LICK IT UP (1983) And the SOLO ALBUMS from 1978: ACE FREHLEY 🛸 (not only the best of the four..clearly, but it's one of the finest hard rock albums of the late 70s!) PAUL STANLEY ⭐ GENE SIMMONS 🦇 PETER CRISS 😼 As for my baker's dozen ranking: Anything after 1983....forget it. I've never owned Animalize, ever, on any format. Yeah, that "Asylum" record is decent musically, but the band looks like Walt Disney threw up. "Crazy Nights" and "Shit in The Shade?" Hahahaha. What a joke! Glossy, stupid garbage. And "Revenge" is indeed so overrated! It's UNHOLY (great track) and then mostly crap. Save for Heart of Chrome and maybe Thou Shalt Not, the rest of it blows. I think the cooler, less 'drunken stupid mall chicks' look helped this LP as well. But make no mistake, it's UNHOLY and that's basically it. That's enough to say. Basically, KISS was KISS in the 1970s. That awesome, powerful, kick ass rock n roll band: Ace, Gene, Paul & Peter. And then into the early 80s. All of that is either awesome, ICONIC or very good. The rest of it just is not KISS. M ⚡
Tremendous album. Anyone spouting otherwise just regurgitates what they think others believe. It’s pretty weak.
"suicidal ideation has never been more pleasing to the ears" 😂 Cool retrospective. Those first 4 Danzig albums are something special.
Hello, quite a decent rundown. I'm not sure you're old enough to call it a "retrospective" but still well done. I've listened to Glenn Danzig's music for over thirty years and I completely agree with your praises and absolute harsh criticism of the later Danzig records. I live by the first 4 records and everything he did with the misfits and samhain. And I remember being so excited for Danzig 5 and how utterly disappointed I was when I got it the day it was released. Absolutely fucking atrocious, as was 6. I tried so hard to like them and I couldn't. Fuck I even liked the two records the misfits did with graves. I dug a song or two off of 7 and 8 but I think the best thing he did since 4 was Death Red, I really liked about half of the album and I could give or take the rest. I think one of the main reasons why it was so good is that he tried so hard to emulate the original Danzig band sound, specifically JOHN CHRIST. Everything else has been borderline unlistenable and I completely agree that he should stay away from production. I don't understand why he wants everything to sound like it was recorded in a construction site porta potty. You'd think someone with that kind of vocal and songwriting prowess would also like the best of not at least decent production. And he might have always been a cult hero but he owes much of the somewhat mainstream success that he has achieved to people like Rick Rubin, John Christ and Chuck. The misfits reunion shows are cool but I think many people would agree that an original Danzig reunion is what the world needs. Thank you and take care.
*best IF not at least decent production
72 yawns
Bit too plump for a look alike. please.
I'm just saying what people told me, homie. Take it up with them.
This is why I don’t hang out with people that mainly listen to metal. Yes, I love metal but they weren’t even 30 seconds into the first song and they had already made up their mind about the entire album.
None of us mainly listen to metal. My favourite band is The Replacements, Nicki's is Blondie, Drew's is prolly like The Flaming Lips or Slowdive, and Caleb's is prolly Swans.
Thank you so much for voicing my disappointment on this band. I was a fanboy as a kid in the 80’s, but can’t stand them anymore.
I think the closest you'll get to those missing albums between Painkiller and Jugulator is Halford's Fight side project albums that had a transition from the typical Priest sound to the more Darker 90s sound. I enjoy the Ripper albums (well mainly Jugulator as I'm a sucker for that 90s metal sound) but I'll 100% admit they have flaws especially on Demolition and yeah those lyrics are pretty damn bad.
Massive Fan of DM. This is a great piece. Very well thought out and presented.
I was a diehard Danzig fan as a teenager of the 80s. I guess I was a John Christ fan more so, because I couldn’t get into anything that he wasn’t involved in.
I used to have the Samhain box set, then I ended homeless and packed around d in my backpack for about a year until I got arrested and I never got my pack or any of it's contents back from the cops when I was released. It's a real shame considering how hard it is to get Samhain material now.
I know I am very much in the minority here, but I do like every Danzig record, to some extent. Nothing compares to the classic era, but each album after still has good stuff. Mind you, the more recent albums would have been better served with a different producer/engineer, as those albums tend to have a smothered kind of sound. Also, the abuse he heaped on his voice for so many years has taken its toll and it is very obvious on those later albums.
Good overview.. I know its not discography but the Misfits reunion shows where a whole beast onto themselves.. Like most fans, I think the first 4 albums were awesome... in the later years there's a couple tracks off the last few albums that I think are great but his overall sound has diminished.
Hooked on Danzig in college great band great video
Dude Dokken DESTROYS Motley Crue on all fronts!!! Same with bands like Wasp and Ratt and White Lion. Crue are utter dogshit!!! Always have been
Wasp is a bunch of trump worshippers
Still drives me Fucking nuts that the only way I’ve found their music is cd-r’s a friend burned for me in 2002 after he bought his cd-r copies on eBay for like 25$
I agree with the Danzig sounding like Elvis comparison. Maybe in an essence sense but overall no not really. I think Glen Danzig sounds more like Jim Morrison.
cookie monster 🍪😂😂 great video love!!!
I used to have that Kryst the Conqueror album back in the day lol
Earth AD is the pinnacle
Circle of Snakes suuuuuccccckkkkssss - Tommy Victor is the worst thing to ever happen to the Danzig discography
I really dig Danzig 7 - easily my favorite of the "post-4" albums
I do not like all their albums, but admire their own sound.
Snakes of Christ and Sex type thing are more borrowed from War Machine (Kiss). STP changed the last note or two in the progression, but I think Danzig kept it the same or similar.
You’re the man! Great video. Someone really should break it to John Christ that EVERY rock drummer hits rim-shots everytime they hit the snare😂.
Great breakdown, excellent
The word in the thumbnail is spelled 'disappointed'. 🤓👍
Good on you, mate! Hilarious-and TRUE.
I hate the people who made this series, and I hate no one.
Lucifuge came out in 90' ... Core in 92' so Sex Type Thing is copying Snakes of Christ.
Love the video, but I have to disagree about 5. That was an awesome album and there’s nothing wrong with mixing it up, to me every album sounds like Danzig even if they don’t sound exactly the same
Say what you want about Danzig, he is one of the most influential musicians and creators ever to love. The misfits, Samhain and Danzig are seminal works that have influenced numerous artists.
1989 I was 15 and rebellious as hell. Now I’m an old man and have to piss. Like really bad
Would have been cool to see how Samhain would have turned out if not for Rick. Great video!!
Your autism is excused
4 was soooooo mysterious. I love the cardboard sleeve too. I wore the black danzig shirt with the white skull. For 4 yrs in high school. I seriously thought it was lucky l o l
Mostly agree with what you said, I rate Sounds of the Universe higher than Playing the Angel and Ultra higher than either but hey, tastes differ. Great review either way
Glenn Danzig has always meant a lot to me too. I have been listening to his music since childhood. I have met him several times, I have a collection of his comic books. I have his necklace. (Like literally, he gave one to me when I was in my 20s, it’s a real silver upside down cross with a Danzig skull on it ) He was my favorite singer until Till Lindemann showed up. I also listen to Eerie Vons music.
