I was born in 79 so missed much of the birth of this era. But am super glad my older brothers got me into metal. Now at 44, I've passed the torch onto my two teenagers. Rock on my brothers and sisters and kids alike!!!!!!!
I was born in 65 grew up in Freemont and Milpitas but in 75 at a k-mart I seen KISS ALIVE 1 and it was on in the bay area there was a magazine named BAM I saved the one with Y&T on the cover but inside there was a advertisement for THE STONE and THE KEYSTONE in palo alto and playing there was Metallica with Dave Mustane and the last time at the KEYSTONE in palo alto was 97 and the original members of UFO that was great seeing them in a small club Micheal Schenker smoked just recently my daughters got me a cool shirt that says "I might be old but I got see all the cool bands" btw in 79 was probably the last time I got a haircut the same year I started playing guitar after a Halloween show with SAMMY HAGAR at the old San Jose civic auditorium that was my second concert that year the first was KISS at the cowpalace in SF btw the radio shows I listened to on KSJO and KOME and remember "Metal Monday's" the 80s were a great time to graduate from high school and turn 21 in 85 but it sounds like your brother got you on the right track btw I still play guitar and bought my first Gibson les paul as a retirement gift to myself anyway this was my introduction into ROCK music so KEEP ROCKIN 🎸 and have a good day
Great job on this doc. I was in L.A. and Big Bear Lake when all this was going down and we were all over it. We were always burning the pictures of the hair "metal" bands... watching the sad, preening images of posers in hairspray go up in smoke from the pages of BAM Magazine & LA Weekly. We saw shows at places like the Olympic Auditorium & Fender's Ballroom... my first true Thrash gig was Anthrax & COC where my nose got busted by the skull of a stage diver, literally within the first minute of COC's set. It was ON like Donkey Kong from that point forward bros & mofos. The Euro-Thrash stuff was huge in our circle for sure, plus my fave to this day: F**king VOIVOD. (first saw them at Fender's on the Killing Technology "Tournado" -- a LEGENDARY show) We were also at Metallica's "secret" debut show with Jason Newsted after the tragic loss of Cliff. (we had just seen them months before with Cliff, opening for Ozzy before they left for Europe) The secret show was at the Country Club in Reseda, (coincidentally the same venue where I attended the same f**king AWESOME Michael Schenker Group show as Brian Slagel mentioned at 11:44 a few years earlier) and Jaymz & the boys were ON FUCKING FIRE that night. There was a palpable energy in the air of that place that I'll never forget. It was all of us collectively coping with this overwhelmingly tragic loss and yet staying strong, looking forward & carrying on. 🤘 (>
When Kirk talks about being bored in east bay or whatever it sounds like me being in my teens and 20s trying to play in bands in fuckin Iowa... nothing else fun to do..
Hunolt and Holt together was so Rad. Saw hella Bay Area/ hardcore and thrash shows from ‘86-‘90’s. Stoked when they come to Texas still. Testament is a beast as well…. If you weren’t there, you missed out. Days of the eviction parties and day at the Farm. Haha
80s thrash metal was so influential and important, that even hard-core punk bands were "crossing over" to be more on the metal/polished side… The Necros, DRI, COC for example
Ruthie’s inn kind of sounds like how Hammer jack was in the late 80s and early 90s. I’m sure Ruthie was a little more hard-core considering it was the core of thrash metal but hammer jacks was our go to place to get right Long live and love music. Everybody be safe healthy and happy God bless.
50:21......one of the most beautiful places in the USA....Yosemite.....METAL UP YOUR ASS!!!.seriously though, if you're ever in California, go to Yosemite.
Cliff Ron Dave Kirk James Lars Jason Bob Robert are the Former and Current members of Metallica who toured in the Bay Area in California Back then and now.
Far away from the city , isolated , nothing to do ? I wonder what they'd think of growing up where I live ? At least they had the ocean , surfing , skateboarding !
Newsted was the Different Bassist compared to Cliff Burton.Who Joined Metallica from December 82 to September 27th of 86.Cliff Burton was in three bands EZ Street Agents of misfortunes and Trauma before Metallica.James Hetfield was in three bands before Metallica Phantom Lord and Obsessed and Leather Charm.Kirk Hammett was in one band before Metallica called Exodus.Robert Trujillo was also in Three bands Before Metallica Suicidal Tendencies and Influences Grooves and Ozzie Osborns Bands for Three Years.Newsted was also in one band before Metallica Flotsam and Jetsam Lars Played Drums at age Fourteen in 1977-1978 before moving to Las Angels in 1980 aged sixteen years young.
Cliff died in Sweden and Newsted toured with Metallica 43 day after cliffs tragically bus accident crash recorded justice Album recorded black album and Loud reload Garage Inc SMS and the soundtrack called mission impossible and left in January 2001 Bob. Rock took over as bassist for the album st Angry and in 2001 Robert was able to finish recording that album in 2003 he recorded three albums with Metallica for the first time ever in twenty one years Death Magnetic in 2008 and Hardwired To Self Destruct in 2016 in 72 Seasons in 2023 which was last year.
I was at that Day On the Green show in 85 and the 89 Monsters of Rock show at Candlestick Park in San Francisco those started at 10am until 11pm man I had a ROCKIN GREAT TIME in the 80s what a blast but everywhere I went it would snow that wasn't on the weather report lol idk if anyone slept for a decade I'd go to work so I could recover from the weekend 😊
Comments before me is true but I will say he doesn't get nearly enough credit though. Not as much as he should! I don't think Metallica has been the same since he was fired.
Can see why Dave always been bitter. That whole scene back then loved Metallica and they got a great push cause of the music with Dave in the band. So recording kill em All either way Kirk never mattered. It was heard on the demo and at shows what ended up being kill em All. So the fans loved Metallica for what they were with Dave. They got known and introduced to the right people when Dave was there with Dave’s music. Kirk played on kill em All but it wasn’t his music. Even Kirk watched Metallica play and thought they were great with Dave in the band. James at first didn’t even play guitar at the shows. Point being that whole buzz was with Dave before Cliff and with Cliff but without Kirk. People love to say Dave did nothing for Metallica and who they are today. Of course he did. This is the scene that put Metallica on the map from The Bay Area to New York. Every band thought Metallica with Dave was great. Die hard fans followed Metallica cause what they heard before Kirk. They maintained fans after the fact. But without Dave back then it would have all just been a dream of Lars. That’s all. Honestly not sure why he wasn’t part of the induction at the rock and roll hall of fame for Metallica. He was a key part. No matter how much James and Lars wants to downplay his role. And trust me they have been since he’s been kicked out
Con este documental, me hace pensar que Mustaine pudo haber sido echado de Metallica por envidia… al parecer era el que tenía más presencia, inclusive más que Hetfield… eso pudo despertar celos para que hiciera lo mínimo para echarlo…
Great doc. Really makes me emotional about those times. RIP Cliff
I was born in 69 . Metallica changed everything ! Thrash changed my life . RIP Cliff
ditto on your entire post
I wish my parents were as supportive as Cliff Burton's were.
Seeing James light up talking about Cliff, really warms this cold black heart! Fucking great doc!!!

There’s no surfing in San Fran. And you can skate anywhere there’s pavement.
Good luck in Iowa... welcome to Slipknkt and every other thing that's actually more psychotic 🎉🤕👽if u think ur bored in Cali. Come to Iowa
But for real I fucking love this movie ❤
Maybe back then :music" was more important..then stateboatding and sll the b.s..
They were and still "musicians "..fuck state boating back then who really care about wheels & a piece of wood..this is the age of "THRASH."
Fuck that, I'm into some glam, and to call those people posers is fuckin stupid. I would've avoided that scene if I was teen at the time.

Rob T was there from the beginning. He grew up with Cliff and hung out together playin the early days of Thrash. So it's all in the Family.
Most of these band biggest influence since they were in the Bay Area themselves all these bands took after d.r.i

The metal allegiance part.. they said they took the best of the bay area to make the band.. Mike Portnoy is from NY.. fail.
Burton and Trujillo but not a single shotor mention of Newsted. What a dis!!
He didn't play in any Bay Area band in early 80s

Jason wasn’t apart of the Bay Area scene. Metallica was bigger than the Bay Area by time he got in Metallica.

How about a Bay Area Death Metal Story? Of course, that takes place in a different Bay Area!!!
That would be awesome...🤘
The Tampa area death metal scene is just as vital as the Bay Area thrash scene without a damn doubt!
Hammett used to be against posers and he became one.
Sad or Hypocritical, huh?
The whole thrashers vs posers thing was nothing but a gimmick
I love Thrash Metal. But it's sad to see how Homophobic it is.
