This is a possible for me.

I was looking for the functionality of just the e reader, but wow this is great! Just that pop of color and the other features are so helpful... I’m in!
Tbh this is already something I would enjoy using. I mostly consume b&w content on an ebook reader anyway. Mostly. But there are research papers with colorful graphs, the occasional article with an illustration that doesn't work in b&w etc. So I'm not looking for high saturation and color accuracy, just a possibility to be able to view something in color. I also love that I can access my old Kindle library, but I don't have to be locked into the Amazon trap. I'm glad that development of e-ink continues at a good pace. As someone who sits in front of a computer all day for work, I find reading books and Internet articles much better for my eyes using an e-reader. That said, the performance of these devices mean that its still not as convenient as using a phone or tablet.

My eyes are on this and the Remarkable, at the moment, for note-taking, since I'm learning languages and need the ability in foreign books. This review helped a lot, and I think this is now sat on pretty even ground with the Remarkable, now, in my mind. This has the colour choices that I'd like, and the ability to use apps I already know, and have a library in, like Kindle. But I think the Remarkable still has the advantage of being closer to an A4 size (and also not being out of stock in every shop I look at, at the moment). The Remarkable also appears to have a little less delay between the pen touching the screen, and the refresh, though I'm curious if that's noticeable when using the Boox, or if that's just perspective from watching someone else using it? Overall- Thank you very much for the review, it was incredibly informative, I learned a lot more than I was honestly expecting to, and I feel I understand a lot more what the information they had shown on their website actually means when I read it back, now.
Well, I have an older Onyxboox plus. It’s a great little device, but measuring battery in weeks maybe only if you use it for reading. I use mine for note taking concept sketching and doing the roughs for my work to stay away from the iPad Cintiq screen. And yeah if you do a lot of heavy sketching this thing does after 5-6 hours.
Kaleido 3 will be here in the summer. This should fix some of the issues that Kaleido Plus has in the Nova 3 Color. Hopefully we'll have products that utilize it by August
Looks like we're about 1.5 years away from something truly usable. Bigger screen, 300dp color, faster refresh, better PDF annotation and export/sync to computer annotations. I've waited 10 years already. Can wait a little longer.
I actually don't mind the muted colors. It reminds me of old Sunday newspaper comics. It's the white balance that's still throwing me off. It's has this grayish hue that isn't present in black & white e-ink. Fix that and I'm going to be tempted to get colored e-ink.
I've seen a few reviews of this, but one thing that appears to be lacking is memory (micro sd) expansion... Which is sorely needed for a device with only 32GB of internal storage. I have many articles saved to the "pocket" app, which I use on both android and ios on non-e-ink smart devices . But this would have been perfect to finally use it on colour e-ink at last, but my pocket files will take up too much of the 32gb available VERY quickly (pocket does allow storage to memory cards) . Add a micro sd card to this and they've got themselves a customer!
On the weird interface problems: you can actually get a more normal home screen by installing a launcher app (I prefer nova launcher). That allows you to have your android app handy next to the Boox apps. It also allows you to access the regular Android settings. I must say that I don't particularly like the reader apps Boox provides, the layouts it produces do not conform the styling present in the ebooks. And the search options feel lacking. The only app out of the box that seems worthwhile is the drawing/not taking app, because it makes use of both the pen and regular touch.
Love my boox 3 colour, the great thing is not locked into one system. Now read my kindle ebooks on my boox 3 rather now than my kindle. You dont really notice reading is a downgrade and txt is still very clear. The rest is the icing on the cake
she didn't use mode because you can trade in refresh rate for less ghosting, if you read your pdf full size, you can actually ask the screen to refresh every page turn, issue come when you have to zoom in and scroll...
So, would using this for reading scientific papers in PDF format work out fine? I would like to take notes by hand on the sides, and highlight text in different colors. I've read that it might be too small for reading A4 PDFs, as you have to zoom in and move around often. But I feel like if you hold it in landscape lode this should be fine? Splitting the PDF into 2-3 horizontal chunks?
Interesting review. Some friends recommended me Onyx Boox readers. I think this will be my ideal ebook reader... except one thing: I have some photography ebooks which are unfortunately color intensive. And also less resolution in color mode means less detail, yes?

Hi, does it have a glossy screen or matted reading screen? I've seen on several occasions in this video where your lighting bounced off rather intensely but I can't tell whether its because of the screen itself or only due to lighting angle. Thanking you in advance! :)
Good review, I have this device and concur with what was said. An interesting point about comics on this device. Once you get used to it, the mute colors and resolution actually seem like less and less of an issue. You get used to it and you start to feel that this is a notable step up from a B&W eInk device. It's the ghosting that becomes the problem. There needs to be a way, for comics, to refresh the page with each action in order to get rid of that effect. I also own the Pocketbook Inkpad Color, and that device did a much better job of figuring it out, but then again, that was in their native reading app where they could tailor the experience. It becomes a much harder proposition when reading from an a Google Play based app like the Kindle, etc.
When in your comic reader app, try using the App Optimization screen (from that on-screen floating button). Go to the Refresh tab. Then change the refresh frequency to a lower value. I use 2 in one of my apps. The easiest way is to use the pen to press on the underlined number in "Full refresh frequency x", then use the editor to enter a value, which is a little easier than using the slider.

Between this one and Boox mini C which one you prefer?
Love your works!
When they get to 3072*2048 resolution and 20hz refresh rate, I'm jumping in. For now, regular lcd or oled for color stuff.
@@slydog7131 Much appreciated! That helped a lot.
Good review as ever Lisa :-)
Couldn't help noticing you have a book by Murakami-san loaded in there--one of the ones I've sadly read, 'cause now I'm running out of them. ;-) He has a new one coming out soon.
Onyx is the best company for e ink writing and reading but their products are rare to find and when you order it from their warehouse it took 3 weeks to arrive and if you luck enough you will get in one piece
Thank you
@@RK-um9tu Thank you for your reply. Does Amazon sell the device with all accessories?
I just ordered mine on Amazon
In your opinion.. How practical is this size and would it matter to have a stylus..
When will you have the gen9 x1 carbon review? Very curious about the keyboard
If this would come in an iPad Pro size, I’d be all over it. Would be perfect for note taking in textbooks.
there's a 10.3 inch version in of it I believe
The company makes a few different form factors. Check out the Boox Note Air. No a color version yet but otherwise looks like an excellent device.
@@marcfavell , that's not out yet. At best another reviewer thinks it might be out by end the end of this year.
So. I'm on the market for an ebook reader with Color e-ink... which one is the best value for my money?? Because I read regular books but not having color feels like a drawback for my mangas
Can you read PDFs in landscape mode (half page) mode ??
how is the refresh in black only mode with 300 ppi ? is it usable for browsing web just to read articles e.g. with firefox's reader view ?
Is this about to be replaced? Considering getting one but don’t want it to be old on day one
Man that loks really awesome. I love my Kindle but color would be welcomed...
I don't care at all about video, I'm thinking of color PDFs...
I LOVE the tee shirt. I've been wanting a new tablet. But I can buy a lap top computer for the price. Plus I would get more storage with a PC. I'm super disappointed over the prices of Samsung tablet.
It:s hard to tell, but what do you suppose the refresh rate is? I'm thinking 3 a second
Heyyyy, this is the cool stuff I come to watch :)
Different question...In your opinion what is the ideal aspect ratio on a tablet for reading comics? And what tablet screen size? 9.6"? 8.0"? 8.4"? 10.1"?
Definitely not the 20:9 of today's mobile phones. This widescreen mania is getting ridiculous.
If I don't read comic, only read books. Which do you prefer? Nova3 or Poke3?
If only reading books, get poke. Cheaper, smaller. Nova is overkill for just reading. Nova is great if you want to take notes or draw.
Oh it looks so wicked when it plays video, like forcing a late 90s internet baud filter XD
e-ink is so rad, but it's a shame that interactable interfaces showcase it's flaws. It deserves to be utilized for a lot of display scenarios.
issue is that eink is basically a monopoly, the company is slow to improve it and when you scale up screen size it become insanely pricey
Love the shirt
My likebook mars broken today so .. the next is this product :)
Thanks Liza
I’m still hoping for a 12” colour eReader I could use for reading graphic novels.
I bought one for note taking and easy highlighting. Evrything else is gravy.
Are you happy with it?
Is the frontlight upto expectation ? how is the display in sunlight ? Are you facing any eye strain ? That is all I need to know before purchasing this.. please reply
@@RK-um9tu this tablet is also for reading, their poke 6 inch is the side of a pocketbook, and this one is the exact size of regular book size. I thinking of buying it to read, also take notes, studying whatever I want, a few comics and saving Ideas in general
@@RK-um9tu For some people, reading is also entertainment.
I have a question…can you part the screen in the middle to take notes in notepad about while you read a pdf?
Yes, it has split screen
Hmm, I was disappointed with the lower color resolution and high price. But by the end of the video I think I'd prefer it to my paperwhite. Given it can run android apps and the colors look okay and has a type c port. I wish there was a cheaper option without the wacom digitizer since I wouldn't be drawing often. If they can improve it and get the price down I think I'd switch to an onyx from the kindle.
Can you use local library apps to download books?
if only these things ever reached a clean 24-30hz..
there are e-ink products that do that. a chinese e-ink monitor comes to mind, but iirc it was ridiculously expensive. definitely a nice novelty toy if you make six-seven figures though
Dasung e-ink monitors let you watch RUclips real-time, but a 13" display costs $1,300. A 25" version is coming this year, you can imagine the cost. If you have a serious eye strain from LCD displays, you might want to consider it, but it's out of reach for most people. Not to mention you can only service it in China.
They're meant to be persistent displays so they don't refresh. Good for reading, not for much else.
I wish. The Onyxboox note app is Ok, but the pinch zoom is very clunky. I can get Artflow to work Ok after a lot of tweaking, but wish the drawing apps would be more smooth.
@@fallinginthed33p yeah but a clean 10-20 fps screen would open it up for video or animated pdfs, better ui.. it would really open up the technology for broader use
Only one question.. Can we use it to read on scribd app..
Can you use the rm2 pen and erase with the back on it?
