Great review! " Ive seen a a huge amount of colors on the note app - 16 colors" It feels so much like 80s.
The ghosting is annoying while selecting colors in note app. I would still go for non-colored device.
Kaleido 3 will be available in June so better wait for that. Skip this Boox version because this will be outdated in 3 to 6 months for sure.
Who knows, we might get extra 4 colors.

Nova 3 color looks great. Although it has the same limitations inherited from the Kaleido technology, some extra mile engineering from Onyx makes it much improved than other color models. Do you happen to have the latest Pocketbook InkPad Color 7.8? Can you do a comparison between the two? Thanks!

This video is much appreciated. Also what the heck when and how did this come out so soon. I just got the nova 3 a few months ago? I still love it its one of my most prized things. I would probably want to get a color e-ink when the tech is more developed. It actually looks really good
From what I've seen, the color screen is still inferior for text reading comparing to BW e-inks. Yes, the color is nice to have but I cannot think of a situation I would really NEED it. If the color screen has 95% brightness and contrast comparing to e-inks in BW mode I'd consider it. Expecting to see more comparison in this regard.
Amazing vid we would love to see this device outside cause the main reason of e ink was of the imposibility of a normal lcd device in a sunny day
Kaleido 3 will be here in the summer - hopefully we'll have products that utilize it by August
Thanks for an excellent unboxing video. I really appreciate your in depth reviews. Yes, Background white looks dull. I was really looking forward for this device. Anyways, please can you suggest any E ink device (non-color) with has clearest white background (without frontlight) + high contrast / PPI + Capablity of correction typing with external keyboard? I would really appreciate.

The writing is good. Unfortunately you will need to use the neoreader rather than an other app not optimised for pen imput. You will therefore not be able to have those notes synchronised and available across devices.
@@rubymouse6904 I'd say it's pretty solid for other functions compared with the other 2 7.8 inch color E-ink devices currently available on the market.

Static images of colour and text are good but dark. The light is awful and as soon as you scroll it is a nauseating ride!

Same. Mine is arriving soon. I'm wondering whether to keep it, or return it unopened for a normal Nova3... Or wait for the inevitable next upgrade and buy whatever that is (although if you always wait for the next version, you'll never buy anything).

How is it dim light? How bright does it need to be?
@@theonlyrick works fine in dim light. I'd say for my taste, it seems I like the front light about 25% brighter than I would have it on my Kindle Paperwhite.
Also, presently watching this video on the device.... And it's actually doable.
Can you make a video or comment on how annotating (highlight, making a note, etc.) a PDF works on this device?

I just received the regular Nova 3. I feel color tablet is not ready yet at only 100PPI. Will look into it when they reach 300PPI.

The colours are beautiful. The rendering of coloured text and images is so improved as we'll no doubt see when Voja gets his microscope out!

I've been looking into getting an e ink tablet and your reviews are definitely helpful. One thing I can't quite grasp is the size of the screens and which would be a best fit for me. It would be really helpful if in your future reviews you could compare the devices to an A4 piece of paper, just to get a feel of the real dimensions. Cheers
Well, why not just print out a 7.8" proportions on an A4 and compare like that? That would probably clarify it for you very easily :)

@@MyDeepGuide Thanks! I’ll try explaining again as I fear you might have misunderstood the purpose of my initial request. I was asking for a comparison to an A4 sheet of paper as the size is an important aspect for me when choosing a tablet. I know I can get the overall tablet dimensions online, and even figure out the screen size, and just as well I could argue that it is quite simple to read some specs online and compare them to others. But thankfully I can watch your reviews so I don’t need to do all that (apart from more b-roll of the products, that’s another thing that you might look at adding more of). More so, due to the fact that I couldn’t find a store that holds e ink tablets in stock for me to physically go and see, it would be helpful to see the tablet next to a piece of A4 paper: it's something that everyone has lying around for quick referencing. Anyway, I was just making a suggestion, by all means, disregard it if you find it silly. 😊 Cheers, I’ll go get my scissors and start cutting out Nova sized pieces to compare to A4 sheets of paper
Is there a way to turn off all colors? Basically, turn it in to a Nova Pro 2. The color is great but in some instances, it would be cool to have a black and white experience.

I have some questions regarding the new Nova 3 Color. I would like to use it with the Android app CDisplayEX to read my digital comics.
Questions:
Can the button be progrrammed to be "Page Forward" in CDisplayex?
My eyes are not what they used to be and I need to zoom in a bit on the comic. Would you consider doing a video with CDisplayEX reading a digital comic (CBR or CBZ format) in landscape mode with the comic page zoomed in? Pressing the button should move the page from left to right and then back to left for the next section of the page while remaining zoomed in.

I hope they don’t ever add the screen protector though. Having to take that out after opening the box would be a pain.
I'm not going to use it either... But to be fair, they are easier to take off correctly than put on correctly, so I wouldn't mind the extra effort for me to save a bunch of other folks headaches.
Hi, I was practically buying the note air when I saw the nove 3 color and so I'm waiting for a color version ( of the note air). I don't know a lot of e-ink, I'm making this switch to avoid big exposition to blue light. I will use if most for writing (with keyboard) take some note and browsing and reading ebooks. I don't want to buy the bw version and the day after find that the color version is release. What do you think about it? ( I look all the note air deep guide videos, thanks a lot for your great work 👍)

On your in-depth review please compare the screen to the Kindle Oasis in terms of how white/grey the background is, how black the letters are, the sharpness, and the need for backlight. Thanks!
Considering that i don't own a Kindle Oasis and that i have never seen it or used, i won't be able to do that.
@@MyDeepGuide Any other ereader with a screen that's not colour should work. I think a lot of people would like to see the comparison between the whites on the two types of screens

Kaleido 3 will be available in June. Better wait for that technology.
Yeah, but according with “Good Ereader” at least 4-5 month would be needed for the release of the first “Kaleido 3 device”on the market. They said we could see it on October or November, of this year. A “BOOX lumi color” or a “note air color” would be amazing.
When Kaleido 3 hits, they'll be working on Kaleido 4. That's the technology cycle.
Also tcl nxtpaper is supposed to be out on the 15th April. Though whether that will happen, I don't know...

Nice video! Thanks for sharing. I am thinking about buying a ereader for manga/comics and occasionally books / pdf when I can't buy them physically in Europe. Do you think that this ereader is a overbuy for this purpose? The note taking features is nice but not necessarily for me
It kinda is overbuy but at the same time no. The ereader just gives you so much less eyestrain, if you have the money and can justify the price then in no way is it an overbuy.
I have an Onyx Max Lumi that I use for reading textbooks, general reading, and black/white comics and my eyes feel so much better after using it over my phone or computer. While I don't use the notes functionality I still think it was worth it even though it was expensive.
I would also take into consideration Pocketbook's color e-readers. They usually have better front light and ghosting performance.
I think it looks fine even without the front light on.
ONYX claims to have improved the support for epub format in Nova's 3 Color software. Could you take a look at this in your review and open some epubs containing quote paragraphs, code blocks, tables, raster & vector graphics, math notation etc?
I don't think i have any EPUBs that would demonstrate that. If you can provide me with an example document, I'd be happy to include it in the test. What does it look like when you export a color drawing to view it on something else?
Are the resolution differences between B+W and colour on the same page? If a page has both black text and a colour image, is the black text at 300PPI and only the colour part at 100PPI?

How does it look in comparison to kindle or nova B&W. Is it really darker or Grey (without backlight). Lack of yellow light is a sad thing.

Mine is being delivered this afternoon!
And after one hour it's going back. I was very excited for this but the ghosting is so extreme it distracts from the text, the light is horrendous - really, really unpleasant to look at - the grey is still too dark for me and I prefer my tatty old b&w reader for text. The rendering of colour is much improved and the pen and note taking is awesome but at this price point it's not enough for me as I mainly want to read.
You may have jumped the gun, since the device just received an update that improves ghosting and adds color contrast, saturation and brightness control. But it all depends on what the expectations are.
I think that the Kaleido technology approach is fundamentally flawed, and no matter how well it may be implemented, the darkness will be at the core of the problem, because it will require the use of a front light to some degree, which in turn will expose and magnify the ghosting problem, and it becomes a circle of dependency. Plus, if it requires the use of a front light to have it bright enough, then it defies the main point of an E-Ink screen, which is, to be readable in natural environment light.
That being said, i think that Nova 3 Color is managing to extract quite a lot out of the screen, but I remain unimpressed by the Kaleido approach. At it's core, it's deeply flawed, and there's only so much they can do to try and overcome those flaws.

I installed the upgrade but it's still not for me - the colour doesn't rival what you can get on a tablet but - as you say - makes the e-ink screen far worse for reading till it defies the point of it. In it's current format it's very niche. I will see what tcl can do with their nxtpaper.
I just ordered one mostly for note taking, colored highlighting capabiliy and Android 10 sold me. May buy 13 inch one at a later date, for pdf viewing and e mail if I like this one.

The ghosting seems bad compared to other readers - I don't know why.
The reason the screen protector hasn’t been fitted is a number of people don’t like it affecting the clarity of the display as their is a slight shift in quality with it applied
They have changed their policy and screen protectors are being applied now in the factory. Those who don't like it can easily take them off, which is the whole point. It's infinitely easier to take off a screen protector than it is to apply it perfectly in a regular home environment.

Would it be possible to get a side by side comparison of this device and either the Nova 3 or the Note Air playing the same video clip using all of the available refresh modes... Both the ones they have in common as well as the extra one possessed by the monochrome device. As I only have the color device, I'd like to see what sort of performance hit I'm actually taking. Once again, I really appreciate all of your videos.
Hi. E-Ink devices are not meant to play video material, so if that's one of your needs, you really don't want an E-Ink device.
@@MyDeepGuide I know they are not meant to. And I have several non e ink devices... But it's fun. Also, I have the Color and even on it, for short video clips embedded in other media, the performance is acceptable rather than dragging out another device, IMHO.

Hehehe, trust me, you're missing only on a completely unusable jumbled mess of low resolution, pale imaged layer upon layer of ghosting and nothing else. X-mode is not usable in reality and on a day-to-day basis, despite what some other sources or even some users say.

how this books switch to black-wight mod for 300 dpi?
It doesn't have a switch. The screen is black and white 300 PPI with a filter on top that has 3 colors, R, G, B. 300 / 3 = 100 PPI. So color pixels will always show as 100 PPI, black and white as 300 PPI, and there is no software or hardware control to switch the tablet in one or the other mode, as it is a physical attribute of the screen. Basically, a cheat, and that's why I don't like the Kaleido technology.
Finally, you are satisfied with the pen of Onyx. :)
Well, it's a better quality, less squeaky and crackly pen. It's still my 3rd least favorite pen on the market though, at least it's no longer the worst one :)

You’re definitely the right person to ask this question. I’m an illustrator and I’ve been trying for a year to determine if the drawings in the notes app are in fact, vectors. I’m assuming they are because they can be moved and scaled, but if you could answer this, I’d be endlessly grateful.
Yupps, they are, but at the moment it rasterizes them when exporting as a PDF from the device, or it used to do that, maybe it changed from version 3.1. It was possible to keep them as vectors, if you'd export from their push boox service, but i am unsure if the service does some internal conversions and optimizations when exporting as a PDF. Unfortunately, it doesn't export as SVG. Only reMarkable does that, that i know of, but the reMarkable has the jagged lines issue, so exported vectors tend to be really messed up, and would require substantial optimization and smoothing processes, and that can change the end result.

@@JohnDoe-gs1cb colour won't affect battery as it's a passive filter on top of an eink screen. My 7.8 inches also nova 2 last, i think, a couple of weeks
@@MyDeepGuide Voja, how much grey do you judge the background is? like a pre-carta screen? would you consider possible reading a book without using frontlight at all?
Only under very well lit conditions. It's still very tinted, because it's the same technology, of RGB stripes per pixel as a layer on top, so it's a strange, greenish, beige type of gray. I'm not a fan, tbh. It's a bit better than Kaleido 1, but still very far from regular E-Ink screens.
Damn, I just got my new Poke 2 Color some days ago, and now this new color reader comes out? I feel ripped off. Just to compare with my Poke 2 Color and to see if it was worth it, maybe you could make a deep comparison with the Poke 2 Color and the Nova 3 Color? (FPS, color quality, CPU, ram, performance with browsing and games, and with reading.)
How do you like the poke 2 color? I just ordered mine a couple of days ago and am anxiously waiting for it from ups.

exactly. I tried to install the DAMNED screen protector. after wasting two new ones the third one still looked horribly wrong and I just quit.
The screen protectors is usefull for all device.. ipad, cell, etc is horrible!

If yoy follow my video from the Big Boox Guide, and follow the stepa exactly and exercise some patience, you will have working just fine :)
@@MyDeepGuide I did... Unfortunately, that didn't work. Had to roll back the update, set up Google, then reinstall the update.
All you had to do was wait a little bit for the registration process to be processed by Google, which is exactly what happened by the time you rolled back the update. As i mentioned in the video, you need to be patient and you need to restart the device, as the process can take from instantaneous, to maybe even a couple of hours. Either way, it's good that you got it working now :)
@@MyDeepGuide I was actually attempting to follow the steps from your video, I encountered the error on step #1 which kept me from completing even that. I'm not sure what waiting at that point would have accomplished. Thanks a lot for all your videos by the way, they have been a great help to me. :)

Where did i say collar instead of color? Maybe it's because i was working that day already for 14 hours and then was recording unscripted videos and I misspoke? But thank you for pointing that out. I'm sure someone will find it helpful.
why not just an android tablet ?
Because it's not an ePaper device, and the whole point of these devices is the ePaper display and the health and power benefits that they bring to the table.

Why? They are very different products, and overall I'd always pick Max Lumi over any Nova. But that's just me, i guess :)
