“I should explain a little about my mentality during my travelling years …. As mentioned, I began to explore going out on a limb and sometimes, if things were not interesting, I would go and party for a few days to spend ALL my money. Then the adventure would begin! Every time I did this, I had amazing experiences and hitching across Europe with no money was a breeze for me. I felt totally invincible and had great relationships along the way. These two experiences I recall in this video ended my lust for extreme adventure. If you would like to know all the details, including the downs, order “A Wanderer’s Words on Amazon (link) and you will be taken on an amazing ride! Peace and love”(Paul Wallis)

I am 63. I took off OS from Oz in 77, and did a working holiday for 6 mths. Hitchhiked everywhere with a backpack.
It was the best thing I did. Turned me from a naive school boy into something less naive.
I learned how to read people, how to find work wherever.... shoe factory, farms, orchards, builder's laboring, gardener.
But what I learned most was the commonality between people, and that there are not that many different personalities among mankind.
I felt that invincibility Paul talks about. But I came to understand it as a higher power intervening....and that as long as I made choices that were generally positive and good willed, then I would land on my feet.
I also learned that when life serves lemons, one should make lemonade, and not whine and hide in a hole.
I also learned that luck favors action. You don't have to go meditate or find the meaning of life for years..... You are always better learning while doing....keep engaging the world and people. You will be so much richer for it. No man is an island.
But a few years later I realized I had to stop living a wanderer's life, and build myself up to being a person who could help others aimless and wandering.
That's when my life changed dramatically. The people I met then were more remarkable than 10 life time's of wandering. And the experiences I have had cannot be conveyed, because no one would believe them.
All I can say is when you seek with all your mind and heart and will, you will without a shadow of doubt, find the meaning and purpose and contentment that so often seems missing. So never stop questing. Never give up and join the Madding Crowd.

Thanks for sharing your life Paul.
I think younger gens could benefit a lot from your accumulated experience.
Many of them have been overly sheltered and deprived of the freedoms we had 40+ years ago. There's so many kids being brought up in broken homes, or with both parents slaves to debt, or just oppressed by an ever more dubious education system.
Whatever kick start they can get from those prepared, as you were, to seek something better and more authentic, it's all for greater good.
I hope you find ways to spread greater light into the darkness.
You are an elder of the tribe now, with much to pass on, even if how to live a life honest with one's Self.
Your mind is still outstanding compared to most over 60.
Your life and views are still very very relevant.
      Onwards and Upwards Paul.

Amazing stories. I can relate to the last story so much. A similar thing happened to me when I first went backpacking alone to Turkey in 1990. Hitch hiked through Turkey then Greece running out of money, didn't find work. Had 20 pounds left in Patra so decided to pay the equivalent of 15 pounds on a ferry ticket to Ancona in Italy. Arrived in Ancona with 5 pounds in my pocket. Hitched all the way to France sleeping under pallet shelters I made in service stations along the way. I got to Frejus and spent the last of my francs on some chocolate and a drink. I was in a truckstop, it was about 6pm, massive storm coming over the Alps. Some English trucker from Stevenage with a massive painted Woody Woodpecker on his wagon took me all the way to England on the ferry to Dover and bought me food all the way and bought me beers in a petrol station somewhere in France while we watched England lose against West Germany on penalties in the semi final of the 1990 World Cup. I was with him for nearly 3 days. What a legend. Madness. I don't know if stories like Pauls will ever happen again what with smart phones, the Internet and easy quick money transfers. I love hearing Pauls stories. THE most epic guest you have had on your channel Pete. Well done lad🙏

I can share a similar stories about angels on the road - once , walking through Zeebruge port - about to bivi up for the night - I heard an English voice - 'Are you in trouble ? '
I wasn't but nonetheless she invited me home with her family in Bruge - They were English christians and they'd just circum navigated the globe and had made friends with Native Americans along the way ...
Another time - with a few quid left in my pocket - a Hungarian trucker , who was once a military helicopter pilot , drove me from a suburb near Budapest to Dunkirk - for free - he fed me and asked for nothing .
See ? Kind people are all around . Thank you .

There are more good people out there than bad people. At 23, I had a job in Nantucket, but coming up from Florida, I just had the ferry money from Hyannis to Nantucket, then missed the last ferry of the day. I could only walk the streets of Hyannis all night while waiting for the next day's ferry. Around 2 or 3 a.m., I found an all night donut shop. I told the waitress my sad tale and she gave me free donuts and coffee for the rest of the night. Not as exciting as Paul's tales, but there are people, maybe they are angels, who watch over our welfare.

I said before I will say again "the alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. Amazing stories. the jest of the book and Pauls story is life is a journey and depending on if you are willing to get on or off the bus (leave the house) willing to cross the boarders, willingness to venture into the un-known will determine the depth and breath of your life journey. Great life Paul....cant wait hear the final story. ..... oh and for me I do not think it would have been great to have the i-phone and to have been able to make the call home....The getting lost, the mystery, and the unknown is the Magic....Love it......Super Inspiring.

Oh it getting more and more better as I feel emotional learning about his life. This episode hit more to the vulnerable side of him.
Life's cheap - has so many meaning behind it. Don't just only pushing to the edge also is a good reminding for all of us.
Btw I am Thai living in Australia for 32 years (from 1990) Paul story should promote to Thai people & broader audiences to watch ( ideally subtitle in Thai language- more job for you Pete)
It's a numbers game - also giving me a positive courage & meaningful for someone who lost hope.
I like Thairish Times, Pete you will reach 100k sub soon :) no pressure but I predict you will reach 100k before Dec ( I don't put specific year but i think 2022) I also learnt " What's the story"
When the Irish people meet up, I will us it more from today to my family and friends. Pete style of talking is easy for me to understand, nice English to listen, you are the star!

I can relate to some of these experiences.
Brought back some memories of Dahab and the desert. A few years after Paul.
Hitching a ride in a truck from Yuogosla to Istanbul Turkey. With a crazy driver who couldn't speak a word of English but we had a great time together for days.
Later met his family and friends. Stayed with them for a few weeks.
Great experiences. Some memories that I don't bother telling people because they will think I'm full of shit LoL.
    Thanks Paul for the memories.

    Hi Pete,
Congratulations on almost getting your 20 K subscribers, my family and I really love your videos and all the wonderful stories and knowledge that come from them.
Wanted to ask, have you or would you consider doing an interview with a family that moved there from outside of Thailand, and their stories of children going to Thai schools (is that even how it works over there), and things mom dad and the kiddos do on a daily grind, tips and tricks etc on life for a family in Thailand not from Thailand.
I’m not sure if X Pats can move there with their families and live but seems like through your videos many people go over there to live that are not Thai; but our family was wondering how many families go over there and move, and what has there stories been so far.
Anyways that’s my little/big question…. Love from Vancouver Island, Canada and we are really considering splitting half the year away from here to go live on Ko Chang now because of you ;) haha.
    Much Respect!
