I graduated from ISB in 1967...those were good times. It was a friend of Jim Thompson that got me a job teaching English to Royal Thai Air Force cadets at Don Muang. Yeah use to ride the old smoke belching white buses--- 50 satang fare.
This lady is the most pleasant, well spoken and eloquent American I have ever listened to. It has been an honour and a pleasure to listen to her.

Being in Thailand in the the sixties and early seventies must have been magical. To see Thailand develop through 50 years would have been incredible.
Beverly is a great example of someone who has and still living life to the fullest.

What a lovely lady, and what an awesome interview. It's one of your best, Pete. Nice to hear about the past where I had no idea while I was growing up there. I'm glad her family adjusted well and her story is very interesting and insightful. I wish, however, that she would elaborate a bit more when talking about friendship with Thais in good time, and especially in bad time, but seeing what a lovely, well spoken, and classy lady she is, I can understand her NOT going into detail.
My take on friendship in bad time is that Thai people does not know how to react or what to say as people do in the States or in Europe. For example, once I was talking to a Korean gas station owner and an American sale representative mentioned to him that her father has passed away, and she was probably expected him to give her a condolence, but he said NOTHING. She seemed perplexed that he didn't. To his culture, as to Thais, we don't say "I am so sorry about your loss," because death is a part of life, but we will show up at the funeral to lend a helping hand, etc. It's not so much about saying, but about doing, rather, you know, as the Greek word AGAPE means. Anyway, I am thankful to her husband for being a part of helping Thailand developed and become what she is today. Thank you.

I was living in Thailand, 1969 to 1974. Bangkok was a lovely city at that time.

I'm Thai. I only watch some of your interview videos. I intentionally watch this one because of "52 Years" headline. My God, Beverly does live up to my expectation. She is very classy. I also can tell that she has very sharp brain. She is able to explain each section of her years in Thailand in very brief and compact sentences. I hope that she, some how, has a chance to go through our comments.

Outstanding interview. What a wonderful woman, I love her attitude towards life. She's clearly had some amazing experiences here in Thailand.
Very interesting to me since I was an enlisted G.I. stationed at U Tapao Air Base and was being rotated back to U. S. about the same time your guest and her husband arrived. When I first arrived in Thailand on military transport and stepped on land, it was like stepping into a different world. The smell was different, the sounds seemed like an alien world and neither I nor any of the other G.I.s who arrived on the same flight spoke any Thai, however my coming year in Thailand was soon to become one of the most pleasant years of my life.
Once I had a little time to settle in, I came to the conclusion that I had arrived in what seemed a primitive paradise for a newly turned 21 year old from America. Although the off base sewage disposal system was klongs (canals) running underneath the houses built on stilts along the roadway, the country around me was beautiful with tropical type vegetation and small mountains. In general the Thai people were friendly and accommodating, and I must say that the unadorned Thai girls were world class beauties for the most part.
It's hard to believe that was over 53 years ago.

I came over in 1979 with JUSMAGTHAI. Bangkok was indeed a special place. The islands which are popular now with tourists were just starting to take shape with limited places to stay. IMHO, Thailand was the absolute best time for me from 1979-2004. I can't explain what happened, but we'll never experience the charm and friendliness like of that time.

That’s so true! I grew up in Krabi. It was quaint tiny beach town with limited tourists then(in the ‘80s). I had a great time and made so much memories there. I couldn’t believe how big it has become nowadays.

Bit of a backstory about this interview. I met Beverly’s son at a show a few weeks back. I interviewed him and called the video “what’s life like for a foreigner growing up in Thailand”. I’m not sure what happened but the file got corrupted and unusable. That’s when Beverly’s son put me in contact with Beverly and the rest is history.

Another fantastic interview, what I love about Beverly she is such an open minded person. The way she says she sacrificed a career for Thailand, just goes to show you can lead a good life without having to be career focused. Beverly is a fantastic person, could sit for hours listening to her stories. Top stuff Pete, as always keep it up!

What an amazing opportunity she took way back and it led to a life which she would never have had 'back home' stuck in middle suburbia 'living the dream'.
Listening to her relate the life she has had it has without question being incredibly 'interesting' with many advantages given and taken.

Run accross this as I have followed many of the Thai utubers as my wife of 54 years is from Thailand! We really enjoyed as we lived in Bangkok from 67 thru 72 as I was in the United States Army stationed first in Vietnam then moved to Bangkok so this interview was just fasinating to us keep up the good work!

I was fortunate in my family having my parents and relatives living in many countries around the world. My mother was born in Aden, Yemen in 1912 as her father was an officer in the Royal Navy. My father lived in Australia for 12 years in the 1930’s, two of my uncles, one lived in British Guyana from 1935 to 1955 and the other in Rio Brazil from 1932 and never came back to England, an Auntie to Egypt Port Said in 1930, all these relatives had amazing lives and I remember as a kid some would visit my family in London, which opened my eyes to how people lived in different countries, which put the traveling bug in me all my life, been to about 50 countries in my 69 years and ended up here in Thailand for now! Great interview thanks 🙏

This is one of the best interview Pete love listening to Beverly talking about her life experience living in Thailand and all of the interesting stories of who she knows and met specially Jim Thomson which we did visit the house when we were in Bangkok my husband and I specially enjoy watched your interviews for me who is half Thai and American left Thailand in 1979 at the age of 11and half years old I didn’t keep up much with what is happening in Thailand at all listening and watching your videos interview like this help me very much to learn more about how things are in Thailand specially in Bangkok I was just a little country kid living in the northeastern part of Thailand which I love so much had lots of good and some scary time growing up there i just recently had an job interview for a different position at work and was talking to my boss come to find out she and her family were living in Bangkok back in 1968 she was 10 years old then her farther was in the military i was surprised and happy to hear her experience living in Thailand and at the end of the day we sort of have a lot in common of being a ex military brats and after listening to Beverly was like a icing on the cake thank you Pete enjoying your interviews looking forward to see your next video

I love anything to do with history and hearing from some one who moved there in 1969 was awesome Pete. 1969 was the also the year my family migrated to Australia from England . So I find it interesting to think about those times and what we were all doing on different sides of the globe but at the same time. Thanks again Pete.

Wow such a class act was wonderful to hear her story and how Americans and many other countries came with their knowledge and helped build Thailand to what it is today i have personally found that good people can be found in all countries and friendships can be formed that are long lasting. I have been coming to Thailand for fun and business for almost 20 years and have meet some wonderful people for me Thailand is an easy country to be in as i was raised eating thai food on a weekly bases in Los Angeles and still prefer it to most other foods..L.A Rob

I have noted the changes in thai middleclass,..To be analyzed with country economic and political strikes since then in mind. I feel the same when I told my friends I am going to thailand no one seemed to be interested at all not even a comment . And I never figured out why
I am an American guilty of this and I can't tell you why. I had a good friend visiting Thailand for 10 years. He would tell hilarious stories of his trips during our monthly poker games but none of us ever heard or thought much of Thailand after the game. Eventually he retired to Thailand and I, also retired, took that as an opportunity to visit the country. I did my Google research because I knew absolutely nothing about Thailand. I made the first visit and loved it here! Two years later I moved here and I am married to my Thai wife. I've traveled a bit in my life but I still have no idea why Thailand is absent from American minds.
