You really need to interview other people besides just dirtbags or criminals dude.
There are many good reasons to not trust a dirtbag like Steve. Just because he seems honest and genuine by admitting he had multiple affairs doesn’t mean he is being completely truthful and unbiased.
I guess interviewing well-adjusted people who don’t do human trafficking just doesn’t bring in the views apparently right?

Love how honest he was in the interview. Atleast if were lucky we all had experienced the one. But as a Christian who studied Buddhism, I learned the art of detachament and letting go. And changed my perspective to enjoying the journey and living in a state of gratefulness...and understand true suffering is holding on to the idea of permanence . That has helped me not to hold on to things that were not meant for me. I hope Steve finds his peace.

When you are young, is very hard to let go of an even younger, cute, girl who gave you the best sexual thrills you could imagine. I feel like I really began to deal well with this at around 30 years old. Finally, around 45, I met a woman closer to my age in Japan . She suffered in the corporate meat grinder in Japan. She said the best words I ever heard from a woman : 'we can survive this world better together'. After 27 yrs., we are still together both healthy and financially well off. Wasn't a perfect relationship, but we survived, as she had foretold over coffee in Japan.

I first visited Thailand in 1978 and ran into a Vietnam War vet/expat lamenting how terrible Thailand was compared to the glory days of the 60's. Yeah yeah, I said. Then I got married to a Thai, had a couple of kids in America, divorced, and came back in 1991 for a visit whereupon I found myself (you guessed it) bemoaning the lost glory days of the late 70's. Which didn't make either of us wrong.

the older a man gets the more likely any relationship with a woman will be transactional especially if she is noticeably younger. The sooner we can learn that and plan accordingly the more likely we will be ready when the relationship exists. Love only exists on occasion for high school or college sweethearts who get married when young. They will probably still get divorced.

I can definitely relate to this. Retired US Military, decided to marry my Thai girlfriend, brought her to the US. Had a few great years, then it all went bad. Luckily for me, I’ve survived it all, learned a lot, still have my wealth and health, mid 50’s now, and will retire in Thailand soon. The reason I got out with my wealth intact was because I refused to have kids. But I will never, ever get married again. I do plan on having a Thai girlfriend again, I mean how can you not? They are just so beautiful. But I now fully understand the transactional nature of what I will be getting into. There is no such thing as love, it’s only about what we can do for each other.

Great interview from both sides. There's so much going on here that can be analyzed but my abbreviated observation is crystal clear...the marriage was a terrible decision. That one decision had devastating effects. Impossible for a do-over. Steve's marriage reminds me of the opposite of the Rockwell painting called American Gothic. Those two are going to last forever. Steve's story seems all too common. I truly hope Steve can find some peace, happiness, and a good mate. Steve's journey has definitely made its mark on me. It's a crap shoot. Be careful at all times. Never rush. The young girl was a mirage. It wasn't ever real. Let it go. Anyone going to Thailand looking for true love or a wife is basically gambling. Nature likes balance. All relationships have to have balance. Pay attention to the scale. Who is always doing the heavy lifting? My gut says most Americans/Thai relationships are not ever balanced. This will cause the problems Steve is going thru. Young Thai women are danger to older men who are lonely. They spin the web and the man gets trapped. Especially the bar type women.
Thx for the brutally painful honesty and best of luck to you.

Best of luck to you, too, Brian. As an aside, I'm from Iowa City, and I took a couple of Art classes in the studio Grant Wood was using when he painted American Gothic. You just earned my subscription brother. That was a riveting interview, I should rather say “study” …without doing any pseudo-psychoanalysis you got the guy to totally open up, and give one of the most honest narratives on marital failure and expat disillusionment.
His story is that of so many men… he made what seemed like a perfectly intelligent choice to marry her, she went cold on him, and he and ends up becoming the lonely “villain”.
I really liked your question about false hope in regaining a lost world…was thinking exactly that as you asked it.
It is not only that social environments change, but the man himself is now 64 not 36. As a 60 year old Thai/Japan expat (who also brought the lovely Asian wife back to USA only to discover misery between us) … I felt so sad for this fellow…the world, and you, have changed, the past is over, and you absolutely must rebuild your life view to match the current truth. He seems to know this (obviously bright guy) but is just choosing to stay stuck on his best “5 months and 10 days” peak experience. While seems crazy I still felt some compassion for the guy…anyway this was a deeply moving interview, you’re doing good work here Pete.

I have only seen a handful of good, lasting mixed marriages. One was so sweet. Older Thai lady and older expat man. They were truly in love and so happy. It was many, many years ago and Steve and I exchanged lots emails at the time. We had a fair bit in common and seeing this interview added more to our similarities. In one of those emails he called me his shrink and wanted to know if a bill was coming his way for my services. But I can't charge without a licence and in any case I wouldn't charge a friend. Cute young girls know their power. I feel like I really began to deal well with this at around 30 years old. Finally, around 45, I met a woman closer to my age in Japan . She had suffered in the corporate meat grinder in Japan. Over a coffee, she said the best words I ever heard from a woman : 'we can survive this world better together'. After 27 yrs., we are still together both healthy and financially well off. Wasn't a perfect relationship, but we survived, and we always were there for each other, as she had foretold over coffee in Japan so many years ago.

Great interview. Gotta love Steve's candor and honesty about his own mistakes.
Steve obviously had some psychological damage, and by that I just mean that like many of us he was damaged in some way growing up, and that can lead to self destructive or self sabotaging behaviour. I can relate. Great to see that he's been to therapy and obviously gained some insight into those sabotaging behaviours. Bodes well for his chances of finding a happy life in Thailand again. I wish him the best of luck!
Also, what he said about Phuket is SO true. It's a dump. Samui is going the same way.

@@ThairishTimes A mate of mine went to Samui in 1982. It was difficult to get to and there was only a smattering of bungalows among the palm trees on Chaweng Beach. I went in the 90s and it was still pretty amazing but obviously a bit more development. Same in 2010. Was there last August after doing Phuket Sandbox and although it was novel having the place to ourselves almost with no other tourists, it's all so over-developed and ruined. All those white pool villas on the hills are terrible.
Plenty of vloggers rave about Samui and Phuket. It's not their fault - they were just born a bit too late and pretty much all the adventure and secret places are now gone in the world. They don't know what they don't know, which is what it WAS like. There *are* a few spot in Thailand where you can find an island or beach that is worthy of the being called Secret Thailand, or Paradise, but you won't find them anywhere near where there is an airport or hotel chains.

Interesting interview with some important takeaways. Marrying someone you don't really love and vice versa is a marriage doomed to fail at some point. Coupled with that, Steve's happiest memory was his affair with a teenager that he reminisces about to this day and hoped it would last how long? Sorry Steve, she was only ever going to be yours until a better opportunity arrived on the scene, long past time to come to this realization. What deserved more emphasis was taking the Thai wife to the USA and its impact on their relationship, such as it was. So many, with sad breakup stories, who have done this strongly advise against taking the foreign wife away from their culture and family to transplant into western cultures. This seems to be a reliable recipe for marital failure where you're subject to lose half or more of your assets. Another important point, unless you have ample financial security in the form of a passive income stream and/or sizable savings then living in a foreign country like Thailand even if being frugal, you will eventually be forced to move back to your home country for financial reasons.

@Linda Lowther It's you who is confused about the point being made. My point was that taking an Asian woman away from her culture, family and life long friends is a bad idea in general. Their marriage was clearly on shaky ground from the start and while failure seems inevitable it was moving to the U.S. the brought about their ultimate demise.
As for feminism, modern feminism and gynocentric divorce laws have had a massive negative impact on marriage and the nuclear family. Men are becoming wiser with marriage on the decline as they recognize what a rotten deal it is in general and how easily divorce law is exploited to ruin a man's life. Foreign women can use such laws to maximum financial benefit and frequently do. A "career woman" makes nowhere near the money in Thailand that she can in say the U.S. Marriage and divorce rewarded her far more than her "career" ever would have in Thailand, a fact you conveniently ignore. Steve's experience should be a cautionary tale to any man contemplating doing the same as he did.

Moral of the story is.. don't do tens of thousands of dollars of Coke a year and expect not to end up with psychological problems. I can imagine this man as being controlling, selfish and a very difficult person to have a relationship with. His story about being in his 30's and trying to curate the life of an 18 year old thai girl in order to facilitate his own happiness was a bit of a strange one and gave off quite a narcissistic vibe. He reminds me of someone I know who was in his late 40's who married a 23 year old girl from a northern village (through an agency) who barely spoke any English, he didn't speak Thai at all and yet he was convinced they were in love after 2 meetings because ultimately he was shallow and only interested in his own needs. It's pretty sad really.
I hope this guy makes some better decisions and finds a bit of peace.

@@steverosse A restrained response to such criticism from a complete stranger. The assumption being that the critic always considers themselves perfect, which is certainly not true in my case. Like they say.. "it takes one to know one".. or in knowing one you learn to recognise others at least. I hope your experience in therapy opened your eyes to the positive impact we can all have on others lives if we step away from our own ego and self interests and give to others with no expectation of reciprocation or even the need for it. It can lead us all to unexpected places. All the best with the book.

Iowa City? I did not know any Iowan who likes to live in Thailand, interesting though. I’m Thai and have lived in West Des Moines, Iowa for most of my life since I came to Iowa in 1982. Your story leaves me speechless. I’m not sure what to think. Most Thai women live in Iowa that I know they have a very successful marriage with Farang. Some have a very big age gap (10-15 years) between their husbands. My husband is a white Iowan guy who knew nothing about Asian culture and foods, but he loves Thailand (probably more than me hahaha). Btw, he didn’t pick me up from Thailand. We met at work in Des Moines. I came to the USA when I was 17 and went to university here in Iowa. I have a house in Chaing Rai. If you are interested to visit Chaing Rai, you are welcome there. Let me know by putting your comment here.

I totally relate to Steve with respect to not being able to get over breakups. For guys, a breakup can be devastating. For women, it usually is no big disaster, because women can get 10 guys within the blink of an eye in every cafe. (except for in Thailand or eastern block countries)
I also have been hurt so many times by a GF leaving me, and no matter how much people say that I should get over it, it is how I am wired, I hang on to things. Wow, Steve, you took the words out of my mouth.

Maybe indeed Steve should try Cambodia, Philippines, or Indonesia - these countries have many nice people. I love Thailand, but seems like a large portion of the population has been playing the Farang game too long and what they can get out of the guy. Thailand certainly has lost its luster from the 80's and 90's - I loved Phuket in the late 80's.

I'd say he's never going to forget his negative experiences, because if he did, he'd doom himself to repeat them. Not only this, but His story is one worth sharing with others so people can learn from his experience.
You never forget when people wrong you, because otherwise you're naieve. You would only trust people because you're brave and have some smarts about you after being burned a few times in your life (various ways).
      Forgiveness is God's job only.
