Canon just dropped the R5 Mark II and R1, promising REVOLUTIONARY AI features from autofocus to noise reduction and 4x upscaling... but do they live up to the HYPE? In this first look I test a number of features and also more

Excellent review as always, Bobby. You summarized what's most important about both cameras. Looking forward to checking out the EVF. Many thanks for bringing us great content and delivering all the tech specs in easy to digest bite sized chunks!
Thanks Clarence!
Looks like Canon made some good usability upgrades. The EVF stuff looks good. The stacked sensor for the R5ii should lead to tangible benefits. Tally light. Etc, etc.
I do think that Canon should've bit the bullet with the R3 and just call it the R1. For the internet pundits, Canon had setup wrong expectations for a higher megapickle sensor in the R1. At the end of the day, for the expected end product of the photos being online or low resolution newspaper/magazine prints, 24 megapickles is still sufficient. Is this still disappointing? Okay, sure, but if the intended user doesn't have greater needs then I don't expect any changes soon.
For those saying that there's no march for the Sony A1 or the Nikon Z9... Heck, the R5ii is right there at a lesser price. We can speculate on later versions of those cameras but it's not worth debating today.
Canon seems to be promoting the AI denoise and upscaling stuff more than is necessary. Let's just get down to the crux of it: pixel shift is near useless feature. Canon could've just said, "hey, we think this is a better solution than the difficult to implement pixel shift that had few practical purposes". In retrospect, pixel shift (from the others) was also disproportionately promoted as well. I guess Canon's behavior isn't that different in the end.
I think Canon’s marketing was trying to figure out what angle would sell these cameras to most people. There are so many features and we all had little time with them. Me probably the least so it’s very hard to give a real review on them.
You are right though, they should have taken that approach with the upscaling and used it as a pixel shift alternative. Would be a better sell.
As for the R1 I was also shocked it’s 24MP. It was supposed to be the halo product and now it’s more expensive than the A9III which has global shutter at 120fps. Hopefully Canon brings the price down a bit.
24 is good enough but the market is fatigued on it and wanting something more especially when cameras are becoming very expensive.
@@btonelli I wonder how long Canon will be stuck with 24/45 megapickles. Nikon has been stuck with that since 2017.
@@gameshoes I think it’s up to the consumers to dictate. If they don’t buy the cameras they will change or if the consumers make enough noise they will adapt.
I understand they are adding more tech to make the images and speeds better, but I would be nice to see a 60mp R5 II and 32mp R1
@@btonelli Personally, I am content with 45 MP R5 II, but a R1 Mk2 in low 30 MP range would be perfect and still differentiate from the 45 MP R5 series.
Great commentary as always. You make it sound so exciting that I might need to wait for this to come out instead of getting the X2D. I currently have the R5.
Thanks! Two different cameras (X2D and R5 II) but depends on your style of photography and use cases
Ordered!🎉
@@mxtreme87 enjoy!! It’s fantastic
Was the shutter totally silent in electronic mode or can you adjust volume like r3… also no gps in r5 11. Can that be added in firmware? … well presented 👏👏👏
Great stuff, learned a lot. My favorite is still the R5 just need the extra pixels for bird shooting.
More pixels than r5?? Maeby in this case problem is not in camera. You must watch in mirror, or lens.
I trading in most of my Fuji gear to go back to Canon. So I am excited to get the R5mk2! Also respect that you will test the overheating in the hot and humidity of Singapore. I'm sweating just thinking about being outside Singapore.
@@TedNghiem yes I’m always sweating haha. Thanks for watching
Great review. Happy for all the canon shooters
Thanks for watching
I just wish it had oversampled 4k 60p from the 8k… it is an odd omission.
@@KindHappyLove the video for the R5II is oversampled.
@@btonelli only up to 30p
Ima have to learn more about these two. The R1 is def a R3ii and the “AI” is nothing new. Sony introduced it years ago. Call me crazy but these seem like old tech already.
Agree it’s similar to the R3 in terms of resolution. Feel it should be higher. In regards to the tech it is unique and while Sony indeed lead the charge for AI AF, this takes it a few steps further not including the upscaling and noise reduction in camera which is similar to Topaz.
I wish I was able to show more but when the review units come I can
Do u even know what u are talking? Upscaling , AI noise reduction in the body, AI registered face AF? Do those exist in any cameras yet?
@@mbismbismbAI registering face has been in Sony cameras
@@fallogingl how about others?
@@mbismbismb who wants AI noise redux in camera? If I want noise redux I’ll do it post.
Please, review versus Voigtlender 50mm f1 RF vs Canon Rf 50mm f1.2
LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!!
Let’s go!!!
The Nikon z8 seems like much better value with better video features, hard pass on canon anyways since they won't have full frame third party glass
But sigma and tamron glass is rubbish anyway
Wait!!!!! YOU shot that photo of Angela Lee and Xiong Jing Nan?!!!!!!
@@dakotaxu4792 yes 👍 all photos I post on my channel are taken by me unless you see a photo credit with another photographers name
@@btonelliI’m really impressed! That was some fight!
I’m willing to bet you that there will be an R1 Mark II with a higher megapixel sensor down the line
@@dakotaxu4792 I’m sure there will be
Likely, but I would not expect anything north of 30 MP unless Canon decides to offer both a low MP and high MP camera with the R1 body.
Looks good. Pricey but good. The feature of shooting video/photo at the same time is pointless though as it’s only 1080p video… which nobody shoots in that anymore 😅
Incorrect
Unless you already own EF R lenses, it’s a tough call at this price point. Z8 regularly goes on sale for 3500 with more lens selections. Canon’s lens restrictions will really cost on this otherwise excellent body. Price should have been
I think the market will dictate how Canon works either way their pricing and if there is an adjustment.
Most buyers are already settled in a system now so it’s really about upgrades
We might see a decrease by 2025 to bring it in below $4K.
Thank Bobby for this video. I would like to add one thing, please. It’s SAD that these days camera manufacturers justify their price increase by adding flashy but IMPRACTICAL features like upscaling jpg files to 180 megapixels! Why don’t Sony and Canon add 32 BIT FLOAT internal audio recording to their cameras? That will help the majority of camera users who are solo shooters. Panasonic LUMIX GH7 already has it. All the pros know audio is worth 50% of their videos. If the audio is bad, then the video is useless.
Thanks for watching. I think part of the upscaling feature was to further benefit the choice of 24MP or not having Pixel Shift which I feel is a very limited option.
With 32 bit float, I used to record in this and found that 24bit is more than enough. 32 is great if you need the flexibility but companies like Canon in this release did improve the audio quality for recording in these cameras. It’s not really talked about but it has been improved.
Does it overheat easily in 4k 24 fine without battery grip ?
From what I understand it’s much better with the better heat distribution design
Where do you think the R3 is positioned now? In relation to the R1?
@@F15IDriver 3rd in line.
R1 R5 II R3
I suspect the R3 will be discontinued in November and if history is any guide it will be a one and done camera like the EOS-3 before it.
The R3 mark2 looks great!
Haha good one 😂
Hi sony fanboy hahaha i got one here 🎣🎣
@@mbismbismb What?
The R1 should have been a highER megapixel camera. People don’t want to hear about the sweet spot being between 24mp and 45mp. PEOPLE are GENUINELY DISAPPOINTED that this camera is not a high mp camera. We waited SO LONG and BELIEVED that the R1 would be a higher mp camera after we found out that the R3 was not. Canon has way too many cameras that have 24mp sensors. They just don’t listen
This is a valid point many others have as well.
1 series owners dont care about megapixels. I'm glad canon listen to 1 series users and not youtubers..
@@livestreamsuk6004 I disagree. Having more isn’t a bad thing as it gives a user versatility if they need to crop in or need extra resolution.
In addition Canon already has a 24MP camera, the R3
@@btonelli Which will likely be discontinued once R1 is on the shelves.
@@btonelli I'm not disagreeing but whats the point in every camera being geared towards the same thing. Lower megapixels has allowed the 1 series to have superior low light, faster read out and quicker uploading due to smaller files. These things are far more important then cropping as sports photographers use premium tele lenses in the first place. The 5 series offers mega pixels if you need that. The R3 now makes a great second camera for sports and news-gathering photographers. If youre a 5 series user stay there sports photographers have been fine with 18 MPX in the past. If you can get your hands on a 1Ds Mk3 try it. Known as one of the best cameras for image quality and a whopping 21 MPX!
Let's see how will Nikon responds to their Nikon Z9 II and Sony A1 II.
@@watarchives will be interesting to see
There’s really nothing for Nikon to respond to in these two releases
@@MichaelsKarish it all comes down to AF and AI. Outside of that they are very competitive
@@btonelli it’s a given that with every iteration of the cameras, there’s incremental improvements in AF and with what AI can do, it’ll will for sure be added
But I don’t think Nikon is edgy wanting to respond now
The Z8 n Z9 will continue selling better that these two new releases bc even when they’re 3yrs older, they hold their own very well and the value proposition is something you can’t overlook
@@MichaelsKarish true. The value is there. I think Canon will be more successful with the R5 Mark II vs the R1
Fuji released 2 flagship cameras at the same time haha
@@mbismbismb which the XH2 and 2S?
@@btonelli yes
@@mbismbismb it’s usually rare for companies to do this. That why I said it’s quite rare
Fujifilm releases flagship cameras and puts the same exact sensor and even some features in different bodies. Sony has multiple bodies with the same exact sensor. Canon releases a camera with the same megapixel count as the previous entry, and it’s really disappointing to some creators?
It’s not that. It’s the new camera same megapixel count is considerably more
@@btonelliI have to say, I feel like you approach every camera from a fair vantage point. I’ve been watching reviews saying the R1 is disappointing, or it’s just the R3 MK II. Both cameras have some huge upgrades.
So far I heard and not only from you but several others, Sony still rocks. R1 vs a9III and r5 II vs A1 … not a chance … Sorry
Sony definitely has some technological advantages but also these cameras have some AF and video benefits. It’s going to be up the individual to decide
"Flagship"? That's just marketing!
That’s what they are saying.
new era ? slowly... more wait 4 years for " the revolution " Canon R5 III in 2028. Tired
Haha when you see the AI inside and how the AF works it’s different than what we have currently.
Your review seemed like a sponsored one … SORRY
It’s not a review. I had one hour with the cameras. How can I review it with such short time with it
The R1 is a complete joke...SMDH.
Disagree. Reality we haven't ben able to test it's full potential yet
@badboyvr4 says sony fanboy?😂😂
R1 is the biggest disappointment ever!
That’s a bit dramatic haha.
R1 feels like an overpriced R3 mark II
Fair to some extent
