As mentioned UK import and sales taxes are higher. Also listed US prices don't include local sales taxes which vary from county to county. Where I live that is about 8% added on checkout.
yep, was thinking that the vent was blocked/impeded by sitting on a flat surface. Still, at least it doesn't have the 30min recording limit. A nice bonus.
@@LeesChannel so with the bottom being blocked, flow is blocked. You can’t expel air if you can’t suck in air to replace it. Whether it comes in the bottom and out the side, or in the side and out the bottom, if one of those points is closed off, the system doesn’t work. Perhaps is still has 10% efficiency, it could probably suck some air in through the out vent, but it would be very turbulent and inefficient.
@@PPYTAO It doesn't matter, there are no fans in the camera. The only way there would be airflow would be forced air from the battery fan grip. Also, it was recorded on a hotel floor, very far from a "stress test." The reality is that these cameras will fare worse in real world conditions, in the heat when the sun is hitting their black painted bodies. Even with the battery fan there is minimal difference in Canon's guidance. The issue is that Canon uses an archaic process node for their sensors and chips, 300nm last I heard, so you can't expect them to run as cool as Sony's. I don't think this is going to be something that Canon resolves any time soon, and even if they had, the software limits would likely still be in place, because Canon uses record time as a differentiator between these and professional cine cameras.
It's still "environmentally sealed" as they say. I think Lok said the air channel runs through a graphite heat sink inside the camera. It's a heat exchanger, not a ventilator.
What's the main difference between the R3 and R1 to make it the flagship as some features of the R3 aren't in the R1? Seems like R1 is just an update to the R3 and not worthy of being it's own line, no?
Hi! The dual shooting could be useful the other way around: to make video while shooting photos. Imagine that you are at an event and want to have some sample video for posting on social media, presentations or just simply showcase your work to clients. Now you can. And that video doesn’t need to be high res, even though FHD is more than enough for most social media posts. All best!
New bodies are cool, but what Canon needs for their RF mount is more lenses. Can't bank on folks adapting EF lenses forever, especially if people are new to Canon as a whole.
Lenses that aren't L series. For example, if you want a standard zoom at consistent 2.8 you're shelling out 2k for L glass because that's the only option. Sony, Nikon, Fuji have a very good option in standard zoom for around half that price either first party or third party. The other systems either have the breadth of choice or are just more accessible all around.
@@romo9592 I see you just mean cheaper alternatives, not missing lenses with specific focal. Just on a side note, Nikon just started to open their mount and before that nobody complained about it ( and they don't have a cheap 24-70 to 70-200 first party) For Fujifilm that recent too, and before it was first party only ( but more affordable than FF). But I'm agree Sony, Panasonic and Leica and Olympus offer the most open alternative on the market.
@@romo9592 ok so it's just about a cheap alternative, not missing some specific lenses. On a side note, Nikon only recently started to open their mount and doesn't have a first-party cheaper standard zoom (they don't even have an f/4 for the 70-200) and nobody complained about it. The same goes for Sony the only cheaper alternative is with a third party. As for the price of the first-party lenses, they are all in the same ballpark. For example, the 24-70mm f/2.8 is around $2400 for Sony Canon, and Nikon.
Thank Kai for this video. I would like to add one thing, please. It’s SAD that these days camera manufacturers justify their price increase by adding flashy but IMPRACTICAL features like upscaling jpg files to 180 megapixels! Why don’t Sony and Canon add 32 BIT FLOAT internal audio recording to their cameras? That will help the majority of camera users who are solo shooters. Panasonic LUMIX GH7 already has it. All the pros know audio is worth 50% of their videos. If the audio is bad, then the video is useless.
Because of the marketing, they always want to sell accessories, cables, and that's why they create all these tiers, the same with any other kind of technology. So far I don't see myself buying the R5 Mk II , I own the R5 since its release and that was an real upgrade from the 5D MK III but this time I don't see the value in upgrading (at least not with my current workflow)
Weird. Name a camera from 2016 with stacked sensors that can shoot 8k raw or 14 bit 45mp photos at 30 fps with better AF than any camera out in 2024? I do know Sony still puts on LCD screens on their cams from 2008... maybe that is what you are thinking of?
Aren't You blocking the cooling airstream by setting the camera on the table, in the test....? And in the fan grip, is thát fan serviceable, ie, can it be cleaned easily....???
Could you please test R1 and R5 ii in the LED environment, will there be frequency problems (horizontal stripes) when shooting with electronic shutter? eg. 1/500s or 1/800s electronic shutter When EOS R5 uses an electronic shutter to shoot "Aputure" LED lights, it will encounter frequency problems. Although it does not appear on other LED brands such as Zhiyun, I still want to know whether Canon's new camera can solve the above problems.
If you dont know what would be DUAL SHOOTING useful for is for real Hybrid shooting so one person can shoot real video and take photos at the same time. This is something that all hybrid shooters are waiting for for years.
Sorry, Canon still doesn't offer us wildlife cameras. The R1 only has 24 megapixels, and the R5 MK II has a bending sensor, no GPS, and no cross-type AF. It's so hard to make an R1S with 45MP?
It's said from some people that got access to the camera (some french site) that internal GPS does work. Don't buy it on that info alone but at least there's a bit of hope.
WTF is a "bending sensor" and why is "only 24 mp" not good enough for wildlife. So many people online buy into the YT spec FOMO. I've had 8mp printed on billboards and they look amazing. I've had 10mp files printed on large wall size prints for about 10 years... look amazing even up close. I've upscaled 24mp files to 45mp to compare and often can't see any real IRL differences, even zoomed in to 100%. Using even basic upscale like Adobes Superscale, my 24mp files look better than 45mp files on screen and printed. And of course all the above applies to cropping as well. The lens and af accuracy matter more than going from 24 to 45mp in real world.
@@77dris I have R3 it is graet camera but some times 24mp is too low. I have to use biger focal length lens or reduce distance to the subject. I was waiting for R1 and meanwhile they released the second R3, which is not much different. They improved the autofocus, after all there was nothing left to improve, it works perfectly in R3. Flagship without 8K video, not good. I want a camera built like the R3, R1 45 mp 40 fps, 16 bit RAW dynamics, with GPS, with a modern 3-2nm processor, which will not need windmills, this time they pack an old processor that has been heating up for quite a few years. @@RayValdezPhotography if it’s passive cooling (without the fan grip) I suppose it relies on cooler air going in from below and exiting from the side as hot air is lighter

It has all these excellent features, but does it have one of the most simple features that has been found on even cheap cameras from other brands for over a decade (that has been missing from most Canon cameras)? That is, can you keep the horizon level on during recording video? It may seem silly, but this one feature will decide whether I purchase one or not. Just curious but why? I’m also a Z8 user but this new MKii beats out the Z8 in terms of spec (not price though haha)
Doing the same. Z9. Dumping Canon after a few decades
@@christophercarlimages9003wow. Everything about the canon seems impressive with the AF. I’m a Z9 shooter and very satisfied. But yes I agree 24 MP on the Canon seems like a disappointment.
@@christophercarlimages9003 z9 is a solid choice gentlemen...
I think this is the earliest I’ve ever been to a new video. Cheers. Kind of seems like a better buy to just get the well discounted R5 to be honest.
Why are they charging people in the UK over £2000 more than the US for the R1???????? Costs $6300 dollars - approx £4800 and they expect us to pay £7K !!
taxes
As mentioned UK import and sales taxes are higher. Also listed US prices don't include local sales taxes which vary from county to county. Where I live that is about 8% added on checkout.
Free trip to the US included with purchase.
Europe has crazy taxes and the US dollar is strong against the yen.
Australia cost will be enormous, we call it the Australia Tax. The companies call it the rather vague “the cost of doing business in Australia”..
R1 is looking great. I am sure the pro's will love it, as always with canon's 1-series. There's good reason they are the largest player in the market
Photographers need weather sealing; so if overheating is an issue just open the for the r5c
R5ii may have had better cooling performance if it wasn't sat flat down on a smooth surface, doesn't the air flow out of the bottom there?
yep, was thinking that the vent was blocked/impeded by sitting on a flat surface. Still, at least it doesn't have the 30min recording limit. A nice bonus.
it can if the production company uses copper heatsinks. But they're more expensive than aluminum
No, it flows up from the bottom and out the side
So there are vents now, is it not weather sealed now?
It's still "environmentally sealed" as they say. I think Lok said the air channel runs through a graphite heat sink inside the camera. It's a heat exchanger, not a ventilator.
I been a follower for a while. Awesome work!!
No more new body testing on far east streets. Still missed you guys
What's the main difference between the R3 and R1 to make it the flagship as some features of the R3 aren't in the R1? Seems like R1 is just an update to the R3 and not worthy of being it's own line, no?
Might as well go back to DSLR's
Uh huh. And the electronic shutter is just another to reduce cost, when you look at it objectively.
Haven't left :)
Damn got to watch this seconds upon release
All best!
The on and off switch and stills and movie switch on the Nikon cameras are ergonomically so much better! Why can’t Canon get this right?
New bodies are cool, but what Canon needs for their RF mount is more lenses. Can't bank on folks adapting EF lenses forever, especially if people are new to Canon as a whole.
Just out of curiosity, because I keep seeing some people say that, but what lenses are missing in the RF line?
@@vladox I totally agree with you.
Woah! New ultra expensive cameras with features from 2016!
The DSLR version Cost more, just so you KNOW. Some 8 years later, we have A less expensive version with Far More Features.
There's an old saying. Every two years Canon releases a four year old camera.
@@rkgaustin Accurate!
Weird. Name a camera from 2016 with stacked sensors that can shoot 8k raw or 14 bit 45mp photos at 30 fps with better AF than any camera out in 2024?
I do know Sony still puts on LCD screens on their cams from 2008... maybe that is what you are thinking of?
Dual shooting might be a bit useless. Assuming that the original video size is 6k, you can just take screenshots and it would be fine
Aren't You blocking the cooling airstream by setting the camera on the table, in the test....?
And in the fan grip, is thát fan serviceable, ie, can it be cleaned easily....???
Could you please test R1 and R5 ii in the LED environment, will there be frequency problems (horizontal stripes) when shooting with electronic shutter? eg. 1/500s or 1/800s electronic shutter
When EOS R5 uses an electronic shutter to shoot "Aputure" LED lights, it will encounter frequency problems. Although it does not appear on other LED brands such as Zhiyun, I still want to know whether Canon's new camera can solve the above problems.
Kai with the Batman watch.
If you dont know what would be DUAL SHOOTING useful for is for real Hybrid shooting so one person can shoot real video and take photos at the same time. This is something that all hybrid shooters are waiting for for years.
There is no way in 2024 I would buy a big fugly chunky camera like those Canons. I'll stick with my Fujifilm XT5,XT30 and lenses.
so 5K+ GBP or Euro or whatever for an R5 II? id rather a c70 honestly. thats a stupid upgrade. im very disappointed in the pricing
I think the R5 MII needs to be set on fire to test the overheating, that's the classic DigitalRev way of testing
show me on the doll where the r5 ii touched you😅😅😅
Sorry, Canon still doesn't offer us wildlife cameras. The R1 only has 24 megapixels, and the R5 MK II has a bending sensor, no GPS, and no cross-type AF. It's so hard to make an R1S with 45MP?
@@n1ngnuothey’re cheaper because they’re NOT made in Japan. Sony does have their Pro videos cams made in Japan but they’re a lot more expensive.
Sorry upscaling do nothing, it is only copying the same nearest pixels, the printer driver does the same, if orginal image is too small.
A flagship is a flagship without compromise, that's what you pay for.
Working my way through some old Digital Rev Videos… did they delete them all for a while and now they are all back?
love your reviews, great as allways. I still go with my DSLR 1D X Mark III. just the best cam I ever had! Still see no reason for me to go dslm !
it would be interesting, if the next version could just implement a solution like the Frore AirJet Cooler. That would be a nice way to cool the camera fanless.
Does the wedding photographer needs to ask the ceremony guests send him their portraits before the event to register faces in camera now? When Canon adds cool features like "remove background" and "relight" into their AI improved cameras?
Registrieren der Gesichter geht ganz schnell vor Ort - Bild vom Gesicht machen und registrieren - erledigt.
Mount still closed? Sorry Canon, all the bodies are good enough already…we only want an open mount.
Likewise, I poop on Cannon.
Thank for your great work! Naive question: which one is better for video in the end?
LUMIX GH7 😂

End of the canon flagship starts here with R1
So it looks like it over greater because you blocked the bottom vents by sitting it flat on a table. Try it on a tripod for a real world test.
I come straight to Kai
The R5 has this issue where the flash shoe goes loose and you have to strip the outer plastic and partially dismantle the camera to tighten the screws.
Has this issue been fixed with the R5 mk II?
I have the R5 for a long time and I never had this problem, and never heard of anyone having this issue. Maybe that was a default on your unit.
Seems like the bottom vent was covered in Lok’s test due to placement on the table
that's an air intake. I wouldnt think it matters that much. heat goes out from the side. I dont have it to know for sure.
@@RayValdezPhotography if it’s passive cooling (without the fan grip) I suppose it relies on cooler air going in from below and exiting from the side as hot air is lighter
@@stefanbalmus1659 still doesnt make sense. All you would have to do is put the camera on a tripod and you are in same situation as on the table. Usually shooting over a few minutes at one time is done on a tripod or gimbal, which will block or partially block the bottom intake.
Yeah, shoulda been on a tripod.
R5 II is now the best hybrid out there. The R1 is kind of not necessary at all, especially for the price I don't know who would buy it to be honest.
Jene, die auch schon die 1D-Serie gekauft haben oder die R3. Nichts für den Hobbyfotografen.
with the yen being extremly low, and the tax advantages you can get at certain shops in Japan. you can get the r5 mark 2 for as low as 2505 euro's when its released. if you happen to be in Japan around 20th of august

How old both of you now? I still remember watching kai 1st video was reviewing canon 70 200mm that was 2009 or 2010.
Some third-party manufacturers will make a cooling grip with a shutter button.
BUT WHAT ABOUT IMAGE QUALITY!?
As a photographer, I do not care about video that much. I want dynamic range, no noise and resolution.
I’m a lifelong Canon user, but I feel that Canon might be losing the plot.
Canon verkauft noch immer sehr gut ihre Kameras, das wird sich mit der R1 und R5 II nicht ändern. Auch ist das Gebotene doch wirklich gelungen - mit Alleinstellungsmerkmalen.

I know it has some self-leveling IBIS thing, but that isn't what I'm asking. I just want to be able to make the camera level myself, because I can see the level on the screen. Any clue if it can do that?
Only GoPro does that well
tbh get a bubble level. The MEMS gyroscopes suck anyway. They tend to be 1º-5º off at any given time.
R1....I remember when Canon used to lead this segment. Everything changes.

Why are these cameras over heating? Never had this problem in older cameras
older cameras never had such resolution or bitrate either. capturing & storing large amounts of data generates a lot of heat
They probably didn't turn on the setting in camera that allows the camera to go longer. Even the original R5 hasn't overheated since a firmware came out about 1 1/2 years ago...
@@77dris That not true, the R5 still overheat in 8k or 4k HQ.
