Oh sweet mother of heavenly relief, thank you. I run in the mornings and ended up completely destroying my patella (as far as I am aware), and then I kept pushing myself to continue for weeks after because I ain't the smartest cookie. It got to a point where I was in excruciating pain when I did literally anything during the day (a nightmare for someone who works contruction). But when I put this on, the pain lowered significantly and immediately. Thank you so much for this.
I just found this and thank you so much. I'm in marching band, and my knee hurts after marching (we barely bend our knees when marching) and this has worked for me!

Form what I understand, squatting is one of the main exercises that would help overcome the need for this, but for me, squatting instantly throws my knee off track. Is there a particular way to tape to assist during squatting? That way I can build the strength I need to no longer need the tape at all. Is this same taping method one that would work well for squatting?
Dear Marcellius, i was also diagnosed with pattela perafemoral syndrome couple of days ago, i am a runner, i just wana ask how do you treated yours and how you feeling now?
Hi Shahbaz, I took a 5 month break to rest my knee, which is what my doctor recommended. I am going to get an MRI since it still hurts now that I'm back in the gym (I'm a muay thai/kickboxer). Just have to rest it and hope it doesn't turn into Patellar Tendonosis, which is the tendon tearing, which is where my doc thinks mine is at, but won't know until the MRI is done. If it is torn, then I will get surgery, which as he said is a 3 month recovery time, so it's not too bad. There is also an injection they can give you to repair it, but it's not covered by insurance, he said it costs around $700. Stretch out your hamstrings as much as often as you can, it helps a bit. Dead lifts, quad exercises really help it too. But if it's torn it's just gonna not heal without surgery or the injection. Good luck my friend.
Dear Marcellius, take rest and feel better, i talk to my physiotherapist yesterday again, he said nothing to worry about, my pain is due to excessive running, i was overweight about 110kg and lose weight to 85kg by running, so he said its stress on your knee due to excessive running, so i am suggested for a 10 days complete rest or a 1 month rest, if i still feel the pain afterwards i will also do further checkup and MRI
An addition to my previous comment. Without K tape or your help I would definitely be struggling with my mobility. The walking stick is collecting dust and I'm able to go out, walk and even dance. Thank you, I hope you realise how valued your instructional videos are. x
This is the best explained application video of kinesio tape. The fact of streching it completely to feel how looks the tape streched 100% and then release a bit to have at 50% is very helpfull. Thanks a lot, i will try it next saturday for a obstacle race, it does not hurt a lot but is unpleasant. Thanks
The tape can help off load the pain to your knee especially during the hiking, worth a try....Regards to stress fracture you can apply the 'fan' type of kinesiology taping over the area of pain as that area is probably a bit swollen (I presume it is over the metatarsals). Look at my ankle oedema taping and apply in a similar way, leave on for 4/5 days, have one day rest and re apply for another 4/5 days, you can use an ice pack directly over the tape as well to control pain and swelling.
Thanks for the comments, Kinesiology Taping is different from other taping techniques as most of them are preventative or stability type of taping. The technique I demonstrate in the video for the knee, you are able to leave on for 5 days with no side effects and it might help the muscle recover (if muscular pain) rather than weakening it. Hope that helps
if you have a confirmed meniscal tear then surgery is an option depending on how large the tear is and how much restriction you have to full knee flexion and extension. If you can perform these two movements at the knee then maybe the meniscus is not involved. Kinesiology taping will help reduce the symptoms but it will not help the cause, especially if its a mechanical issue with the knee.
Kat, this taping technique should help with the pain and it will probably help with the control of the patella alignment and the taping is also very good if you have some swelling. The tape is working as you are sleeping as it is lifting the skin and causing the body to heal so you can leave on for at least 4 days, try it and see. Good luck
Any of the 2 techniques i show for patella femoral pain will probably help. Just remember that most of the pain that is felt in the knee is typically coming from another structure / cause, like the hip, lumbar spine and foot biomechanics, hope that helps
This technique could work well to off load the pain in your knee, just remember that the taping technique is to treat the symptom and not the cause so you might need a therapist to have a look at your knee if it does not improve with the tape.
You look like and remind me of Cy Curnin from the Fixx lol..... I'm and Occupational Therapist and appreciate this tutorial! thanks so much for sharing
Hi Liz, thanks for comment, I presume the swelling has gone after 18 months? If there is still some swelling then try the 'fanning' type of taping technique like I demonstrate on the Ankle Oedema Taping video. If swelling has gone then try either the technique I demonstrate called 'General Knee' or 'Full knee' taping. Hope that helps. John
Hi John - thanks for the video. I've had recurring patellar inflammation (lower) off and on for ~3 years. Dr and PT say it's soft tissue inflammation. I do jumping drills, sled walks, leg press. Inflammation seems to kick in when I do decelerated jumps (jumping down from the box). I've stopped those. I'm 47 years old and have been lifting, etc for a long time. Do you feel that your tape will assist with my healing process (decrease inflammation), or should I just stretch, ice, and gradually get back into weights when the pain subsides? With a knee wrap/jumpers knee band/sleeve, the pain is pretty much non-existant. Frustrating injury! Thanks for advice!
Hello sir. Can you make a video about the e-sport gamers wrist with computer mouse fatigue? How do I apply Kinesiology Taping for it. Please. Thank you.
I have infra patella fat pad impingement; would this be a good method for me? I also have a small meniscus tear my surgeon said is not critical enough for surgery. Thank you for your help.
I use Tiger K tape and if you click through my website johngibbonsbodymaster.co.uk look at kinesiology taping course, then you can buy it there (buy discounted kinesiology tape here), it is about £4.50 a roll
My daughter was a gymnast for five years. She is hyperextended both legs...often locking at the knees. Now at nearly 16 she has started golf lessons and is going to be on the school team. (Her PT coach is exceptional...often yells "knees" to her when in class.) She is now complaining of sore knees from practicing her golf swing, where she HAS to be bent at the knees. She's not used to twisting her torso with knees bent. I plan to take her to sports doc, who has treated her in the past for other injuries including stress fracture of her left tibia. I am going to use this P-tape method on her tongiht before she goes to sleep. Any other recommendations? Thank you! HS
+Harris Shore Hi, thanks for the message and the taping technique might help reduce some of her pain but remember what I show is only to reduce the symptoms and doesn't really address the underlying cause of the problem, which you have mentioned in the message - see what the Sports med therapist says and good luck, regards JG
my son was just diagnosed with Osgood-schlatter and he has a trial selection for MLS Montreal Impcat in 2 weeks, i just bought a patelar knee band, should i tape him anyway under it?
All I did was turn my knee, I guess with my foot flat on the floor. Even the back of my knee hurts. Using crutches AND a walker! Getting the kt pro tape today!
+wael breiche It is worth trying as it might help reduce some of the pain and allow you to bend the knee to do a squat eye, not sure if I would recommend surgery as most of these conditions tend to improve over time. good luck!
Hi my son is a basketball player and he has pain in the back of the bending part of the knee. He said he bend down and.. felt some pull. Now he can’t stand up on his leg. How would he apply the tape to the back part of the knee
Hi John! After years of playing basketball, I am sure I do not have any cartilage left in my knees! I just ordered the tape, and I can't wait to try it for my chronic knee pain. My question is, how long can I keep the tape on? Forever I hope :) thank you for your video!
Hi John, Fantastic video, but I wonder if you think this could be my solution. I play volleyball, and I am waiting to see a physio. I have patellar tendinosis on my right knee. Plus parameniscal cyst with adjacent intrasubstance signal in the posterior horn in the medial meniscus, which suggests a pair meniscal injury with no displaced meniscal fragment. Would you recommend straps like this or using the standard jumper's knee brace (the little strip that you wrap around your knee)? Thanks in advance.
Hi John, Thanks for the lesson, i had injured my knee (small chip fracture in tibial spine) three month before, i suffer from a pain in my knee joint while playing football. if i followed this procedure would it help enough support my knee from injury again. it would be grateful if you could advise me !! Thanks
Thanks for message but the kinesiology taping technique is not designed as a preventative technique but it might help reduce your pain in the short term
I'm a Physio whose passionate about trying to understand the root cause of knee tendonitis. As it turns out there may be a very strong link between lower back dysfunction and the onset, persistence and reoccurrence of knee tendonitis. I've put some thoughts together on what I've come to understand about the condition: yourwellnessnerd.com/knee-tendonitis-jaeger-omeara/
I bought a package and they come 6 long pcs. Shall I cut one in two pieces so I get the knee centre piece? Another question is, can these be reused a few times?
You should be able to do some light training or exercise with the tape applied as it allows motion without restricting. Hope that helps and happy Christmas. Regards JG
The technique will help people that have arthritis but remember you are trying to reduce the symptoms as the taping does not treat the underlying cause. Good luck, regards JG
Hey! Interesting video and lots of comments. I train for a 45 k run in the mountains and are experiencing (temporary) pain in the patella tendon after a lot of downhill running. Could this kind of taping prevent that happening? I only have one semi long run left before race day and would like to try it out. Are the colours of the tape indicating how much they can stretch and if so, how should I think?
How long do you keep the tape on before changing it. I was wondering is a patella strap would be better as I also do quite. Lot of sea kayaking so getting the tape wet may be an issue? I have been running for quite a lot longer lately so have probably overdone it but do not want to stop running and would appreciate your advice . Thanks for posting
maleka58 you can keep the tape on for 3-5 days and try the H2O version from Rocktape as better in water, a patella strap is also ok and I would try anything that helps. Regards JG
The tape will help and the body will accept the position and it will help overall but if the patella pretty unstable then maybe the brace is a better option. Regards JG
Thank you for the info 😃. I'll just keep using my brace then since I want to take dance classes which will involve some spinning/turning and I have dislocated my right patella when I was 16 and my knee still gives in sometimes. I'm slightly hypermobile too.
I like to lift weights, expecially squats, and most of the time my knee doesn't move as smoothly as I would hope. will this help my knees move smoother and hopefully not buckle up?
+mimi tang It's worth a try as it might help reduce some of your symptoms but I would still try and see someone like me to make sure there are no other issues as most of peoples knee pain tends to be related from other areas of the body like the hip and position of foot etc, Good luck!
@ John Gibbons, hope you can help me. I have knee pain on my right knee for doing many squats (squats I have done with out my knees passing my toes), burpees and running. When ever I apply pressure to the left side of my knee the right side makes some kind of movement ..did I tear something? Thanks.
phenobarbitalmv75 Hard to say without looking at you, if you are pushing the knee from the outside and you feel movement on the inside then you might have torn the MCL - Medial collateral ligament. Go and see someone like me to get a diagnosis......good luck!
John, I suffer from a swollen knee joint, nothing physical wrong but seems that the patella tracks to the lateral side. Been given exercises to try and strengthen the inner quad muscle but I play football (as a goalkeeper) and struggle when playing lots of games in that kicking the ball causes pretty bad swelling after games. If I followed this procedure would it help alleviate the swelling? I know you cant give a 'for sure' answer but it looks to me it might help. Just dont want to use the 'wrong' taping method!
Hi and as long as you tape the knee in a similar way to myself or another tutor showing a similar video then I am sure you won't cause a problem. If it does increase the symptoms then simply take it off and try another technique. Regards JG
I have weak Medialis quads from meniscus tears in both knees (a year apart) my right knee took 12mths to heal properly before I could run pain free, my left has been 4mths so far, Ive now got a weak knee and a funny ache that stops me running when I hit the ground or pull off not sussed it out, not a pain as such just a strong ache! would this isolate the patella from clearly tracking wrong?
It is difficult to limit hyperextension of the knee with this tape because it has 180% stretch, i use to use zinc oxide to limit motion but found you had to be exact with how you apply the tape otherwise it would be very irritating to the patient and generally restrictive. You have to ask the question of why you want to limit this motion in the first place because taping is only short term...hope that helps. Regards JG
Hello john Firstable thank you for doing this tutorial. This is my first time using kinesiotaping, so i need to know how many times should i change the stripes. I usually run three days per week for one hour each day, and go to the Gym 4 days per week. Thank you in advance, regards!
Hi and thanks for the comments, you can leave the tape on for 3-5 days and should stay on without coming off but only if you use a decent tape like Rocktape as that one stays on for longer and is the best one on the market. Regards JG
Its worth trying the taping technique but it sounds like the knee pain is from the 'forced lotus' position so maybe look at changing the position and you might find the knee pain gets better...regards JG
hi, my son has cerebral palsy and has severe bursitis and patella tendonitis. we've been given tape but he's not tolerating it. could you tell me if kinetic tape would work better? he's in a lot of pain and I'll try anything. thanks x
HI there, first of all thank for uploading this video, I would like to ask you shall if follow the same process for my knee too , I have issue with me knee cap like when I use stairs or up hill or downhill or any sudden action I take it effect straight on the cap. please advice .
Hi john, Would this help with runners knee.. I think it's runners knee I have but can't be sure.. It's like just I the pocket of my knee can fell very fragile , then 15 mins into game it's like s sharp pain full pinch and my leg gives way and then I can't continue to run.. MRI scan shows nothing. I play soccer with a knee brace on for 5 years
Hello, ive got a problem with my knee, and i need to train muscles and kneecontroll, during Football training i get alot of pain in my knee. In the back, front and side parts of my knee, Will this kinesiotapeing help for my problems?
Hi John, Like your videos very much, very useful! Question - if the person had an ACL surgery month ago (scar is looking good), would this technique be helpful? Thanks a lot!
This would help pain to the anterior aspect of the knee and will help the swelling so if there is any of these present after an ACL reconstruction then it will help.
Would this be the best way to tape the knee/patella 6 months post patella fracture of a 65 y.o. woman (my mother-in-law)? Or would a knee brace be a better alternative? She is having knee pain with walking, but not cycling on a stationary bike.
Hi John, my 12yr old daughter has a very tight ITB which causes her knee pain. Her Physio taped her knee and I have to renew it every 2 days. He only used 2 strips of tape, one medial with 50% stretch and and one lateral with 25% stretch. Would it be beneficial to use 3 like in your video? I watched your video on how to tape for runners knee and that's definitely not what our Physio did. I am confused now!
Thanks for the message and there are so many alternatives to the technique that I show, at the end of the day if the technique that the physio used helped relieve the pain to your daughter then that is perfectly fine. So I wouldn't worry to much about it as I am sure the physio knows what they are doing. Hope that helps......
PT student here: We are looking to facilitate the quadriceps by attaching from Origin to Insertion with no stretch correct? This is what the textbook says. Can you explain the 50 percent stretch for the Vastus medials and lateralis. The bandaid technique was excellent.
Oh sweet mother of heavenly relief, thank you.

Good luck my friend.

Fantastic video, but I wonder if you think this could be my solution.
My knee hurts only when I walk will this help ? And where can you get the tape?
I buy mine from Rocktape.com
Hi John, Thanks for the lesson, i had injured my knee (small chip fracture in tibial spine) three month before, i suffer from a pain in my knee joint while playing football. if i followed this procedure would it help enough support my knee from injury again. it would be grateful if you could advise me !! Thanks
Thanks for message but the kinesiology taping technique is not designed as a preventative technique but it might help reduce your pain in the short term
John Gibbons Thanks John.
I'm a Physio whose passionate about trying to understand the root cause of knee tendonitis. As it turns out there may be a very strong link between lower back dysfunction and the onset, persistence and reoccurrence of knee tendonitis. I've put some thoughts together on what I've come to understand about the condition:

Thanks for the message, regards JG
I bought a package and they come 6 long pcs. Shall I cut one in two pieces so I get the knee centre piece? Another question is, can these be reused a few times?
Once you have used the tape then you bin it as cant be used twice....try cutting if you think the tape is to long and try that. regards JG
@@JohnGibbons Is the tape replaced every day or same one can be used couple of days in a row? Are they water resistant? Thanks
mimchy I was told if applied properly the tape will stay on for 4-5 days......and yes you can shower with it on.
I did this and it better but still a little discomfort can I do some light training or should I do nothing
You should be able to do some light training or exercise with the tape applied as it allows motion without restricting. Hope that helps and happy Christmas. Regards JG
John Gibbons thks subscribed
Thanks
when i do oly i really need extra protections for my jumpers knee.. could i use those kinetic tape + kneesleves over?
You can try taping as i demonstrate and try that first, if you feel you need a bit more support then try a knee sleeve on top
is it effective for osteoarthritis
Will help reduce some symptoms but won't fix anything, regards JG
how about people with Arthritis in their knees with swelling etc can they benefit from this?
The technique will help people that have arthritis but remember you are trying to reduce the symptoms as the taping does not treat the underlying cause. Good luck, regards JG
Hi John would this help for osteoarthritis pain?
It will help to control the swelling so yes it should have some benefit for OA, good luck
Its worth a try as might help and the colour makes no difference, regards JG
How long do you keep the tape on before changing it. I was wondering is a patella strap would be better as I also do quite. Lot of sea kayaking so getting the tape wet may be an issue? I have been running for quite a lot longer lately so have probably overdone it but do not want to stop running and would appreciate your advice . Thanks for posting
maleka58 you can keep the tape on for 3-5 days and try the H2O version from Rocktape as better in water, a patella strap is also ok and I would try anything that helps. Regards JG
How effective is this tape compared to a brace if we are talking about preventing patellar luxations? Thanks in advance!
Get knee wraps or knee sleeves. Or you can wear a knee brace when squatting
The technique I show is worth a try to help your knee as it will cause no harm. Good luck
Does anything happen if you accidently apply the tape wrong? So will it be bad for the knee
Hi and as long as you tape the knee in a similar way to myself or another tutor showing a similar video then I am sure you won't cause a problem. If it does increase the symptoms then simply take it off and try another technique. Regards JG
the technique I show will help your knee especially if it is patella tendonopathy. good luck
Hi can this work for knee valgus (knock knees) ?
I have weak Medialis quads from meniscus tears in both knees (a year apart) my right knee took 12mths to heal properly before I could run pain free, my left has been 4mths so far, Ive now got a weak knee and a funny ache that stops me running when I hit the ground or pull off not sussed it out, not a pain as such just a strong ache! would this isolate the patella from clearly tracking wrong?
I am sure the taping can help, regards JG
@@JohnGibbons tried it, sadly didnt work
Will this work for osgood schattlers disease??
I'm 13 yrs old
Its worth trying and you might have to reduce your activity a little bit so good luck. regards JG
Would you use this to prevent hyper extension as well?
It is difficult to limit hyperextension of the knee with this tape because it has 180% stretch, i use to use zinc oxide to limit motion but found you had to be exact with how you apply the tape otherwise it would be very irritating to the patient and generally restrictive. You have to ask the question of why you want to limit this motion in the first place because taping is only short term...hope that helps. Regards JG
Hello john
Firstable thank you for doing this tutorial.
Regards JG
I have pain in my right knee due to forcing into lotus position. Would this be a good tool for pain relief or improvement? How to use it if so?
Its worth trying the taping technique but it sounds like the knee pain is from the 'forced lotus' position so maybe look at changing the position and you might find the knee pain gets better...regards JG
I suffer when I play football if I apply this before football will I be ok to play? Will I still feel discomfort ?
Worth a try as might help, regards JG
Out of interest, do patellar knee caps which can bought online/in-shop perform the same function? thanks
hi, my son has cerebral palsy and has severe bursitis and patella tendonitis. we've been given tape but he's not tolerating it. could you tell me if kinetic tape would work better? he's in a lot of pain and I'll try anything. thanks x
Try the RockTape as that will work better. Good luck JG
HI there,
first of all thank for uploading this video, I would like to ask you shall if follow the same process for my knee too , I have issue with me knee cap like when I use stairs or up hill or downhill or any sudden action I take it effect straight on the cap.
please advice .
I would try the technique as I am sure it will help your knee. Good luck, and happy new year. Regards JG
thank you
Thats ok
Hello, I have a question, first tape the shortest, do I need to place it just like it is on video or on the place where I feel pain? Thanks
Try the technique I show first and see if that helps, regards JG
Hi john,
Would this help with runners knee.. I think it's runners knee I have but can't be sure.. It's like just I the pocket of my knee can fell very fragile , then 15 mins into game it's like s sharp pain full pinch and my leg gives way and then I can't continue to run.. MRI scan shows nothing. I play soccer with a knee brace on for 5 years
I have a technique for runners knee - ITBand so search for that and have a go. good luck
Hello, ive got a problem with my knee, and i need to train muscles and kneecontroll, during Football training i get alot of pain in my knee. In the back, front and side parts of my knee, Will this kinesiotapeing help for my problems?
hi doing this will it help the pain to go away after a period of time of tapeing up?
What are the dimensions of the tape? Got one but not precut thanks
The tape is 5cm x 5m and I use Rocktape and cut the length of the tape accordingly to the area.
Hi John,
Like your videos very much, very useful!
Question - if the person had an ACL surgery month ago (scar is looking good), would this technique be helpful?
Thanks a lot!
This would help pain to the anterior aspect of the knee and will help the swelling so if there is any of these present after an ACL reconstruction then it will help.
John Gibbons thanks a lot, John!
Can I ask what length tapes you use please?
On the back of the tape they have squares and a standard piece is 5 squares, regards JG
Where can I buy this tape online ??
Look on a website called Rocktape.net as they sell what I consider to be the best Ktape available. Regards, JG
Thanks. Much appreciated !!!
No problem
Would this be the best way to tape the knee/patella 6 months post patella fracture of a 65 y.o. woman (my mother-in-law)? Or would a knee brace be a better alternative? She is having knee pain with walking, but not cycling on a stationary bike.
I had ACL replacement a year and half ago but my knee still hurts when im running. How would a apply the tape to help with the pain?
May I have a question. Why do you use the first blue short tape? Thank you for answer. :)
It is to off load the patella tendon
The bandaid technique was excellent.
suffered a high knee sprain about a month ago playing basketball, wondering where can I find this and is it more helpful than a regular knee brace??
I would look for someone in your area that offers the medical help to assess and treat you knee. good luck, JG
It is worth trying this technique as well as might help rather than relying on a brace.
+John Gibbons thanks for the answer I will give it a shot
