Frontier all day. The only thing the Ranger has on the Frontier (IMO) is payload. I love how when you drive the Frontier it feels and sounds like a TRUCK.
I'd take the Frontier over the Ranger, because it is so old-school (V-6, simple gauges, right-sized center screen). I don't like the Ranger's digital gauge cluster or the oversized portrait-style center stack (I do like the key ignition though).
Exactly. They can keep those turbos and giant cell phones on the dash.
@@jeremyisaac1354 LMAO I agree 100%
I love the Frontier cause it’s not like the American trucks all the luxury and fancy gadgets I’m sorry but that’s not a pickup truck
you will NOT pay MSRP for a Frontier. Around Central Arkansas they are all 4-6k off right now. Best value in the segment by far if you have even an ounce of negotiating skills.
I wonder why they're discounted
@@benjaminbrown7127 Nationwide they arent selling
@@benjaminbrown7127 Because the market has finally flipped, buyers market. Some dealers still greedy but if you shop around over the phone and willing to drive past closest dealer, there are dealers willing to move inventory bad!
@@benjaminbrown7127 IMO the Nissan is not as popular as the Ford, Chevy Toyota.
@@benjaminbrown7127, because it's barely competitive with the previous generation of trucks. If a world of re-designed Colorados, Tacomas, and Rangers, this is in last place.
Love my 2024 Frontier Pro-4X ❤ lifted, leveled, and oversized off-road tires are my upgrades and I think it looks better than any mid-size truck on the market 🎉
What lift do you go with?
@@dominionn09 the 2” rough country lift and leveling kit
@@jseelswe did the NISMO 2” lift on our 2023 P4X and couldn’t go up in tire size without rubbing.
@@pnwdweler4100
To be fair I believe the Rough Country lift says 2.5, if that makes a difference
I did an Alldogs RCKilla Anti-spacer lift on my ‘24 Pro 4X and love the look.
I have the 2023 pro4x and love it. Perfect mix of old and new. Only thing i hated was the auto off, which can be locked on by inserting a tie wrap end under the button. Now every thing is great! I love having a cable emergency brake vs. the electronic one and the screen has a nicer look. Wireless car play works well!
Bought a 2024 frontier 4x4 sv kingcab last month. Love it. Did not a want a turbo 4.
Nissan Frontier for the win. Next gen frontier, they need to keep the v6 and this time add some cooled seats and add more trims. I would buy it if they had that. Heck, maybe a Nismo trim which is an off-road sport truck and maybe later some with a supercharger. For how much you spend the ranger it should have offered cooled seats, especially if you spent much more on a ranger raptor. Everyone is going turbo like king candy
Keep the cooled seats... Its a truck.. just more stuff to break
@@WalkingUpsideDown it’s a fan settle down
The v6 is not high tech
I agree with you. I drove the truck and really liked it. Would have everything I want with ventilated seats (sure wish it had the auto 4x4 option too).
I have the Nissan Pro 4x, the gearing has low end gearing which makes it a bit snappy when starting off from a stop. I like it how it drives, 6 cyl no turbo is great. I was driving a 06 Mazda B4000/Ford Ranger 4x4 6 cyl, before that.
Ben, when you put these two side by side, you might as well go park that ranger back where you got it.
That frontier kicks the ranger ass hands down.
I've drivin the Navara (Frontier), Hilux, LC 70s and Ranger over seas mainly diesels. The diesels are tanks, and IMHO much funner to drive. Sucks we don't get em in the States. 😮
I've owned three rangers in my lifetime. I liked all three of them. I miss my 85' to this very day. I was recently in the market for a new vehicle and my wife begged me to wait for the ranger to come out. As soon as I saw that screen I knew it wasn't for me. I was 100% committed to buying a new Pro 4x because of it's old school charm. I even test drove one and was amazed how quickly it felt like home, and that it didn't feel like a test drive. However I ended up getting a GMC Acadia AT4. If I ever get a new midsize truck the Nissan is the only one I would take serious. And from what I can tell the guys in my town are catching on too. Im starting to see a lot more frontiers.
Went with the frontier when I discovered no other mid sized truck had a V6. Super happy with it. Feels and sounds like a truck. Cab is more comfortable to me and my wife than the Taco and Ranger was and it cost less than both.
frontier all day long......after my gen 2 raptor experience with the 3.5 cam phaser debacle, no more eco boost anything for me.
I had issues with the ecoboost set up on a 2013 Taurus SHO I had, bought it with 20k miles, by 75k turbos were leaking. I was done with Ford after that.
I went with the pro 4x because of the price, features and NA V6. Thanks for the review.
Great review! I’d definitely go for a loaded up Black Frontier. It’s got a nice beefy 3.8 Liter 24 Valve V6 and it’s naturally aspirated. Non of that lawn mower size turbo 2.3 rubbish, or the 2.4 4 banger found in the Tacoma, that came out of the Rav-4 or base Camry 🤣🤣🤣
That's what I have . The 3.8 is very good .Transmission is also.
@@user-yh5dd7iv8e really ? You like it ? No issues ever ? What year and how many miles is yours ?
I think I’ll get one brand new before they stop building those babies. I have 14 cars but no pick up trucks and don’t need a big massive hard to park truck. Just to do some gardening and moving supplies from Home Depot.
I like it alot . 2023 black sv 4x4 loaded .it's not the pro 4x
I wanted a V6 and that was better than the tacoma. I didn't want a 4 banger turbo lol
I mean nothing against the turbos. I feel this will have better long-term reliability
Thank you for your side by side comparisons! Given the time you have spent with these mid-sized trucks, how would you rate the Frontier with the others in terms of solidity of construction, and drive/ride quality? Many Thanks, Graham.
I owned a 2020 Ranger and a 2022 Frontier. I like both very much, but the Pro-4X was a better ride and more features. I now have a F-150 and when the lease is up, I’m thinking about a Ranger Raptor.
Frontier good to own I'm not picky on trucks
Can't speak on the frontier but i have a 2019 ranger with the fx4 and im very happy with it.
I think you really have to look at the longevity of the truck and maintenance issues . The Nissan frontier is been a tri and true proven truck that holds up over the course of time now I can’t speak for Ford because I’ve never had a Ford however, I do think that that’s something that you need to compare when looking at both trucks.
Give me a simple NA V6 any day, Frontier for the win IMO
Thank you for this review. I’m kind of torn between the 2. I think im leaning towards frontier just for the simplicity and known to be reliable.
Depending on trim level you're not going to be missing much if anything. I bought a 2022 SV 4x4 with the technology package and love the truck. Heated mirrors, seats, steering wheel, adaptive cruise, auto braking, on and on...the Frontier is not lacking in technology.
I don't get the people calling the Frontier steering heavy... I went test driving and I'm not a man or that strong and I didn't find any issues with it at all, was very easy...
Frontier For Me, Quality And Reliability. Won't Own Any Turbo B/S!
If anybody actually believes that 300 pounds of payload over the rating will bother the Frontier they are extremely naive.
I've put a hell of a lot more than that in a frontier. 2000 lbs maybe more
Right. It will handle it just fine.
I've had 8 full sized rail road ties & made it home safely.
The one my friend is looking at lists 1620 lbs payload... different trim level... seems like it could do more than that.
The bed of my 2010 Ford pickup rusted off before the 3 year warranty was up and Ford said the warranty won’t cover rust.😗Ford has had 22 recalls in 2024 affecting 5 million vehicles. The 3rd Gen Frontier had 1 recall for parking paw in 2022 and none since. Easy fix. Ford has 10 million Lightnings they can’t sell. Corporate Ford is a dumpster fire. Now the fuel injectors are leaking and they can’t afford another recall. I would never buy another Ford.
Seems your upper orifice, is excreting the same as your lower one, your just making crap up left and right, "10 million Lightnings they can’t sell", the Frontier from the tower reliability Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, having only one recall. Your mother should really monitor you so you don't grab her I phone 8 and start posting drivel online again.
Frontier hands down 🙌
1100 lb payload on the frontier is a problem. Passengers count toward payload. Add a trailer with a couple of side by sides behind it you are looking at 450 lbs tongue weight and that has to come off of payload as well. You are going to be maxed out or over. Plus no integrated trailer brake controller. Sure you can add one but typically the integrated controllers work with vehicle computer to provide some sway control for added safety. I think the ranger is slightly wider as well which adds towing stability. I like the looks of the nissan, the NA v6, and the interior design but its hard to deny that the ranger has a lot of compelling features. The ford app is free and lets you remote start from it as well as located the vehicle via gps and see things such as fuel level, oil change status, and more. I think between these two its close but when the 2.7 v6 rangers finally come out I think the advantage will go to ford even if you have to gamble on recalls and reliability. Typically you can extend ford's full warranty out to 7 years for around $1800 which gives enough time to unload the vehicle if its a headache.
If someone needs more payload capacity they can pick a different trim level Frontier. When properly optioned it can be within 150lbs or so of the Rangers payload.
Payload depends on the configuration... the crew cab and short bed and some extra offroad stuff and 4x4 decrease the payload. Thats the lowest payload configuration from what I remember at 1100. Some configs can get up to 1620 lbs payload.
Nissan knocked it out of the park. Nice truck. ☮️💙
I had a 2020 Ranger XLT supercab. Like it for what it was.
My question. Would you choose either or these...or a colorado/canyon with 300hp/430tq?
The GM twins are nice as well. I’d go Frontier or GM and see who has the better deal. If the difference is two K they have me
Why choose the Colorado?
Ranger with a 2.7 V6 and better stats will be out this year.
How long are the GM 8 speeds lasting this year?
@sharkskin3448 its a revamped tranny and after extensively following several RUclips Colorado/Canyon channels haven't seen any transmission issues brought up. Appears fixed. Have seen lots other issues with GM twins on those sites
I'd pick from whatever doesn't come with a turbo...but then I tend to keep vehicles for 10 years or so. If you flip trucks every 5 years or less then the turbo isn't as much of a concern. Ford lost me as a buyer after the transmission issues I had with my last new Ford in 2014...never going back.
Love my 2024 Pro4x!
I own a Nissan Frontier SV and have absolutely no regrets.
I preferred the V6 over a four banger any day!
To Nissan, Frontier is actually a larger class or subclass of pickup to the Ford Ranger which by definition is the embodiment of the Aussie Global ute. Direct competitors to that segment is the Toyota Hilux and the Nissan Navarra, which separated from the Frontier on this generation. Now that Navarra is a beaut that we wont see in US shores.
Yes the Ranger was designed in Australia. But just as the current Frontier was made bigger the Ranger was also enlarged, not counting the six foot bed Frontier, and comparing to this Frontier the Ranger has a bit longer wheel base, is taller and wider, they are the same length, so no they are not in a different class of vehicles. Fun fact, every other midsize truck are bigger than these two, the Tacoma, the GM twins, the Ridgeline and Gladiator.
Both these are my favorites.
I like both. When the ranger gets the 2.7 though it’s gonna be king. Ain’t no way anything is coming close to that. The frontier is awesome though for the old school reliability
I'd pick the Nissan because of the engine, but not a fan of the red accents.
The lava red accents are on the PRO4X only.
I loved the euro/ Australia/ Asia Ford Ranger looking front end, bummer they made it a Maverick Ranger
That 2.3 sounded better than i thought but i would pefer the 2.7 V6
Holy crap those beds are short!
Oh well. At least we can get a Frontier SV crew with a 6'.
And Nissan refuses to offer a rear window defrost on any trim.
Honestly I’m taking the Ranger.
I currently own a 2019 Ranger but just Turo’d a 2023 Pro 4x Frontier in Utah for 2 weeks, mostly to test drive one. The Frontier has a better Cabin space/layout, looks, slightly better ride quality, price and simpler engine.
Ranger has better power delivery, tech, payload, towing and importantly seats. The Frontier just wasn’t comfortable. And once the Ranger releases with the 2.7 that’s a cherry on top.
Good idea for test drive!!!
I am not a huge guy. Im about 5'8ish i do wear boots that give me height boost so im ab 5'10 😂 this will be perfect for me !! I love the physical buttons. Nissan should consider swappin the orange for red. A red and black nissan is gonna be a sellerrrrrr
A vehicle with 1100 lbs of payload is obviously not meant to be used as a truck (for hauling). S why does it have the leaf springs then ?
This isn't for hauling much, its 4X4 offroad vehicle... the trim and configuration matters to the payload. It seems they go up to 1620lbs with the right options.
If I buy a truck, it needs to do truck stuff, like haul more than 3 people. Can you imagine having to leave your family at the store so you cash take your new dishwasher or fridge home?
well, they make it pretty conservative... plus its an offroading 4x4 vehicle, so its even lower. If you want a hauler, the highest Frontier I've seen is set up to handle 1620 lbs.
You'll be able to get the Ranger with the 2.7 V6. To me that'll be $2k well spent over the 2.3.
Still an ecoboost turbo...? that fine if you don't want to keep it a long time.
All that digital crap on the ranger..you know it's going to break just after warranty expires..Ford quality
I've overloaded a frontier in payload. The wheels didn't fall off. I have no idea where they come up with these numbers.
Exactly, you have no idea where they come up with the numbers! These companies are not just making up random numbers for fun, the engineers have a threshold of what is safe and for vehicle reliability with sustained usage. You may use a vehicle overloaded and have no problem, but if you were ever pulled over by a LEO or had any kind of accident while overloaded you could end up fined or the other end of a charge or lawsuit, also if you had vehicle failures, a possible voided warranty.
@@garys2157 I'm guessing depends on the company. Nissan may stay on the conservative side. Maybe they base it as you overheat the brakes coming down a mountain pass then try to slam them on from doing 75, mph while you simultaneously hit a 2 foot elevated frost heave and still being able to stop within a reasonable distance (part of which is in the air) on red hot brakes to avoid hitting the car stopped in front of you as you round a corner sideways fully locked up.
@itsallminor6133 That might very well be true, but those are still the numbers they put down, and hopefully chances of anything happening are rare, but someone still could be faced with a load of troubles.
Payload is mathematically calculated and Nissan keeps it pretty conservative. Depending on the configuration and options the Frontier can be from 1100 to 1620 lbs listed officially.
You should check out the Ram 2500 Tradesman with the Power Wagon package!!!
MPG is way too low on trucks these size. Full size Cummins diesel Rams get similar mileage and have more than double payload and towing.
and my motorcycle gets 36 mpg and is beating out by cars... Sometimes you need a smaller truck... you don't get better fuel efficiency just by being smaller. Frontier can fit in peoples garages, which helps too.
Xterra for 2025 would be great
No sunroof on ranger at 50k that's a hard no for me.
For $48k you can get a PRO4X with leather and a sun roof.
467 lb difference in payload! Drop the mic!!! I prefer the exterior styling of the Frontier. Love the look. Interior very nice as well in the Frontier despite the infotainment being a bit dated. I am buying at the end of the year with the purpose of replacing our midsize V8 SUV that tows our camper. I need a truck with 1500 lbs of payload. The Frontier’s payload of 1100 lbs is a deal breaker. Similar problem with the new Tacoma. I have not seen a Tacoma with more than 1200 lbs of payload. I need function in a truck and 1100 lbs of payload will not do it. If I was not towing or hauling and did more off-roading, sure the Pro 4X would be nice. Give me the Ranger in this comparison.
If it helps. I've way overloaded the frontier many times. I have no idea where they come up with that number I ignore it
Thats just that package... the lowest payload you can get listed is 1100 on that 4X4 offroad deal. There is a Frontier my friend is looking at getting, made for the road, and hauling and it lists 1620 lbs payload. Its a King Cab, not the crew cab... with a 6 foot bed and 4x2... designed more to be a normal road hauling truck and not some offroad adventure thing
Any word on if Nissan is going to change things up for the 25 model year?
Yes, front end refresh and possible rear end, thats all I heard
@@richardlively1666
Man I really hope they don't F up the front end because that's the one thing that really attracts me to this current model😩
Dear Santa, Hoping for the Pro-4X in extended cab like Canada has, power rear sliding window & vented seats!!!!!!!!
The pictures captured of camouflaged test vehicles show very little change... there may be some things with headlights a bit, and a grill pattern change... doesn't look like anything major. They might change up the dash a lot though, apparently it was camouflaged out too to hide it.
Wait for the 2.7 V6 as for tge 3.8 V6 it should have way mire power than it dies
The V6 is up on the build and price $2100 option.
@@marklihsu thanks l will check that out but l am also looking at the chevy 1500 5.3 V8 there are some good deals on them
They need to stick the V8 Coyote in the Ranger and it would be more attractive... and a 6 foot bed. Just baby beds for light truck use and turbo engines....
nissan for the win
Ford is now taking orders on the new V6 turbo for the Ranger.
2100.00 option
@@richardlively1666can't wait to see it tested against the taco
Go Utah! ❤️
I'll take the Ranger any day over the Nissan. What drive mode was the Ranger in? Perhaps sport mode would have felt more responsive. Does the Nissan even offer other drive modes beyond those for 4WD? I feel the Nissan is really dated and plain looking, especially in the interior. Not much style to the door panels at all there. Plus, the Ranger is faster, it has at least 1000 lbs more towing capacity, and it gets better fuel economy. Could it be the Nissan infotainment system is easier to use because it doesn't do much? Perhaps you should explore all the features in the infotainment systems. The Ranger does a lot of cool stuff like zone lighting and allows you to give feedback on driving experience directly to Ford corporate. From everything I've seen in these truck comparisons, the Nissan doesn't hold a candle to the Ford.
Do a quick update on the situation with the Ram Dakota. I know at this point it’s not going to happen but you should look into why. Ram is shooting themselves in the foot. They’re overpriced trucks and EV program is going to put them out of business.
Frontier thx! 👍🏻👍🏻
I like the payload, fuel economy, and back seat room of the ranger. The frontier def has a more aggressive look and a nice naturally aspirated v6. I’d take either of them over the new Tacoma that’s made in Mexico. 👎
That is the lowest possible payload configuration you can get on Frontier... max is 1620 lbs
V6 all day.
Don’t like the front end of the ranger but the rest is ok
I am a ford guy, but the turbo 4 banger is going to be a no from me for reliability reasons.
2020 Fx4 89k no problem.
They’ll be offering a 2.7L. V6 on the XLT and Lariat trims.
We have 5 rangers at my job that we use to travel between job sites and they are amazing. The miles on them range from 75k miles that mine has all the way up to 200k and can tell you none of them have had a single issue. Mind you the trucks idle plenty with those miles and are constantly turned on and off at job sites so they’re getting abused lol. The 2.3 is a solid engine
Your butt dyno is way off the Frontier is over a second slower to 60 than the Ranger. TFL did a drag race between all the Mid sizes trucks and the Ranger clean house. The ranger with the 2.7 V6 should be a rocket in the Mid size class.
I’ll still take Nissan. Reliable
Ranger for me
If the nissan was closer to 36 it would fly off the shelf.
You can get the exact one he showed for $38K with current discounts.
There is no comparison. The obvious winner is the ranger. Nissans are gas guzzlers.
Same old Frontier with a new body. Same lousy mileage and old technology. You get what you pay for.
yep a lot better
Older Gen Nissans were super reliable, but the new garbage. The new 2024 ranger has fixed kits of the problems of the ranger.
Ridgeline is bigger than either of these and has a better engine.
Not better than the Nissan. Ridgeline is great and reliable but the timing belt vs Nissan timing chain
It's funny how you Americans think, before the other mid-size pick-ups were refreshed everybody was bashing the Frontier but now all are heaping praise on it(trends).😅😂
The frontier is a far better truck for the money. It is far more reliable than the ranger. Most people who buy a mid sized truck are not using it for pulling heavy loads. They are excellent for off roading.
Ford ecoboost is garbage. They make us a lot of money at the shop though.... Thanks Ford! The Frontier is probably the only option now with everyone else using turbo 4's. The good old days of these small trucks going 300k+ miles with simple cheap maintenance are over.
Why don’t you put the ranger 6 cylinder diesel up against the Nissan. Why put the 4 cylinder ranger up against the 6 cylinder Nissan. Hardly a true comparison
Last time I checked, the Ranger doesn’t have a diesel in the US 😂
And the optional 2.7L V6 the Ranger is getting is gas
Huh, the 2.3 outperforms the 3.8 in everything but sound, and making inadequacies feel bigger.
I'd take the Ranger over the Frontier. It's much more modern with everything - and the powertrain has proven to be very reliable. And the 2.7L V6 EcoBoost will be a game changer. The Frontier is a very good looking truck but the payload is very limiting, especially if you want to tow anything, even a small trailer.
There has been nothing proven to be "very reliable" I've read its had many issues... and that low payload and towing is just that one offroad set up 4x4 config because of how its set up. Depending on configuration the Frontier can be up to 1620 lbs payload... maximum tow weight can get up to is 6640 lbs
@@AyaWetts All it takes is some Internet research to find the 2.3L EcoBoost to be very reliable. Many people have reported 200K miles with no major issues. Get whatever floats your boat.
Ford tried but Nissan didn't. I'd still get it over the frontier. The engine may not be the desired powertrain but that Nissan interior is just insulting, it's older than I am.
Your 2 years old?
@philipparana9225 if you think that steering wheel, key, platform, and switch gear are 2 years old i have some news for you.
lol, ford literally just stuck an iPad and instantly destroyed the interior. No buttons. Tacoma has a better interior, but Nissan looks the best on the exterior.
Actually, I think non raptor rangers are the best looking mid size. Interior still terrible
@@dtay8913 if it ain't broke...don't fix it
Nissan at $46k manual sliding rear window 🤦
Less to break. It's not a big deal at all. You could say the Ranger at that price has no sunroof.
Ford…..the 4cyl with v6 fuel economy 🤡
And the Ford has a key! Even worse!
Ford is busy building a horrible reputation. Very hard to overcome that
Toyota trying to catch up 😂
Had the Nissan didn’t like it
A key?? Who the hell uses those anymore? Geez ford get with it.
Ford has the STUPIDEST packaging. A 50k truck with no push button start. They do this in all their vehicles. And they will not see one dollar from me. That is nickel and dime the customer.maybe have less recalls so you don’t have to recoup so much money
plus plastic steering wheel, no heated seats or steering offered. just dumb
@@richardlively1666heated seats with the high package on XLT. Heated steering wheel on the lariat
@@marklihsu Im sorry I misspoke, I guess I missed that
I wouldn’t buy the Ranger just based off of the annoying, cheap Ford door chime. I hate it! They’ve used it for over 15 years in all their vehicles. I know because I had a cheap ass Focus long-term rental back in 2009, when I wrecked my car. Listening to that cheap sounding door chime for a couple months broke me of driving Fords. Why they haven’t changed it, I have no idea.
Me too I know! It sounds like cheap plastic toys!
I have a 2001 ford ranger 200.000+ miles show me a 2001 nissan2001 on the road there are none on the road
I've heard lots of people with old Frontiers still on the road... even looking just at fuelly, people are still reporting mileage tracking on 2001 Frontiers.
Tacoma has always ruled this segment. Don’t even bother buying anything else.
Ford ranger xlt no heated steering wheel or mirrors, you have to step up to the Lariat. Maybe in SoCal, Miami or Hawaii you don't need such things but in Colorado there nice options to have. Not $6k nice and crappy 18" wheels, leather seats I don't want, and a stupid drive by wire shifter. I guess old Mr. ford wants the poor's to remember they are poor and cold hands helps that. Pro-4x for the win all day. Also I'm thinking about adding a roof rack so skipping the pro premium package saves me $2790.00 I get to keep the better looking wheels, I get to keep storage under the back seats no extra stereo equipment needed, I keep the cloth seats less sweaty in the summer. I'm 6'3" no sun roof gets me 1" more headroom. win for cheaper Pro-4X.
If you look underneath. You'll probably noticed the Nissan is built better as well
What’s up with your hair? You going a man bun?
Tacoma has always ruled this segment. So what’s the point. Don’t even bother buying anything else.
The new Tacoma went turbo 4 and is now made in Mexico. Only time will tell, but I now question its dominance in the midsize truck segment….
I've had both. The Tacoma isn't better imo. Especially when you look underneath
ruined it with 4 banger and building them at high price point a QC sucks .i own 4 toyotas but not the new one it junk
New Tacoma is plagued with problems and bad choices by Toyota... their sales are down 60%
