I rented a brand new 2024 French Blue 4-cylinder Mustang and drove from Boston to San Francisco in March - 3,614 mi in 6 days mostly on Route 66; a lifelong dream. The car was incredibly comfortable; sharp steering, solid brakes, fantastic headlights, 315 hp and endless waves of turbo torque across the rpm, and 36.4 mpg. The only downside was the lack of paddle shifters. Many cars claim to be GTs, this one proved to be a true transcontinental grand tourer.

Mustangs GTs are built from the factory to be just that, a GT. If you want it to take turns at racing speeds or be the quickest thing down a straight line you’ll have to get a specialized package OR mod it yourself.
I like the mod it yourself route, mustangs are a car where you’ll never be able to get 100% out of the car unless you know the car and know how to drive it.

You can’t beat the sound of the v8. When I take my 22 GT in for an oil change, I can always tell when they take it back because not even the big pickups sound the same. For those who complain about the “luxury’” or lack there of, you buy cars for different reasons. I have a manual and I know there are days when I’m going to be in stop and go traffic and it’s going to suck. But there are days when I’m on a curvy road running the gears and you couldn’t get the smile off my face. The Mustang is the last V8 American pony car for a reason. Ford understands what the MAJORITY of buyers want; a fun around the town car that looks great, sounds great, is roomy enough, is practical for a person that actually has a family and friends. There are speciality versions for those that want to track them, but most never will. Here is the reality of any car with a track suspension setup, the only one that actually enjoys a ride in one is the driver. GT is "grand tourer" once you get over yourself, recognize you do not, nor will you ever approach the skill of Carol Shelby or Ken Miles, you'll enjoy a standard Mustang GT, how do I know? It's been around for 60 years now and it's the one American pony car that has a forseeable production future past 2030.

Should do better MPG on the highway - I have a 2018 GT Premium, 6 speed. Set the cruse control to 72 MPH on the interstate & I’m getting 30 MPG +/-. That mileage has been confirmed several times. Recently did a several thousand mile road trip, North Texas, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, rural Wyoming highways, total trip, parks, highways, towns, 27 MPG. The “secret” - No “race car” driving. Happy motoring 🤠

Happy it exists but 45K is quite a bit. I'd like them to come out with a 35-40K stripped out version. Funny because in 2022 you could get a Camaro LT1 for 35K MSRP.
For 35K you got 20 inch wheels, front Brembo brakes, power seats, wireless apple carplay/android auto, launch control, sports steering wheel, LED headlights and taillights, and most importantly a Tremec 6-speed manual with no-lift-shift and rev matching. Not only can the transmission handles crazy amounts of power, but it also is one of the best feeling trans and is 10000000000x better than the MT82 mustangs use.

I spent a lot of time looking at videos of the 2024 Mustang and came close to pulling the trigger. I ended up buying a used 2005 manual GT with low miles (and a number of cosmetic flaws) for 10K. I still lust over the 20204 but I have kids with high expenses. New toys are on hold for another decade or so.
In my opinion, The Dark Horse is for those that will track the car.
The Base GT is all that most people need even if the premium trim with the single screen looks much better. The dual screen has identical functionality.
The one small disagreement I would have is that there are 2 essential options. First, is the active exhaust. I agree completely that it is needed for making the car fun. Second, are the Brembo brake upgrades. You can upgrade the brakes without the performance package.
The performance package is nice but doesn’t turn the Mustang into a Track car. It will need additional cooling only found on the Dark Horse trim. That requires a talk with the dealer about installing Ford Performance cooling parts.
But the Brembo brake upgrade will be useful in real life even if you don’t track. The car is Heavy!! . Plus those red, blue or black calipers just look great.

Don't know about now but the S550 before the PP2 the PP was fine to live with - never had a complaint about the suspension in my 2015 with the PP - I'm in Ohio and routinely took it to Indiana, Michigan, NC, PA, TN, NY, etc. it was my "salesman's car" - I can see though with the PP2 and further refinements over the years that would make the car more track focused - I agree that in many cases an upgrade to some areas (brakes and exhaust) would be optimal - I would probably get trapped with: "the package is only a couple hundred more than the al-a-carte options" and just go that route even though it might make living with on the daily more of a pain....

I think your spec Mustang is the one buyers want. All those things you mentioned missing from the Performance Pack cars can be purchased as you go. Part of the fun in owning a Mustang is making it your own and adding all the touches you want to it. The only things I looked for when I bought my 2019 GTCS was the things I couldn't change easily such as the digital cluster, active exhaust. I've since upgraded to the 6 piston brakes, the performance sway bars and springs. New wheels/tires from LMR and it handles pretty well to me. Plus, didn't have to do it all at once by dropping 65k on my Mustang, but rather built it up over the years as I saved up.

I bought my 2015 GT with Perf Pack (then with a manual) in the summer of 2015 with the intent of making it a pretty comfy "road burner" - while the MPG wasn't all that great - fuel was much less than it is today - I don't think I'd look at the Mustang for that purpose today. My current "road burner" is a MINI Clubman JCW - in most mixed driving I usually get about 33MPG. Nothing really is like the Mustang in that it did soak up the miles and was one of the few cars out there with a normally aspirated V8, manual transmission and decent overall comfort for a pretty reasonable price (I don't think I spent much over $45k with tax, title, fees, etc.). I still believe that just about everyone should experience a car like that for a while in their lifetime....

You can find used cars in this date range for 28 - 32k still with low mileage and they are very easy to mod with bolt-ons. Just my .02 but I just don't care for the new body style and interior. I like the pre 2017 body styles the best but the engine in the 2018's and up are just so much better than the earlier years.

This is the kind of real-world review I've wanted to see of a Mustang GT, rather than a track day and tire-smoking burn-outs for the kids. Amusing: at 12:54 being passed by a Focus hatch.

I think people should look around at the previous year models that are still on lots. My mom just got a brand new 2023 challenger scatpack for $44k and thats after all said and done taxes, plates....ect.

I've seen the ecoboost advertised at 30k for the 2024. Standard 10 speed trans which is a $1500 option on the gt. That's the best value for a sports car and number 2 isnt even close.

I don't get why you have to get the V8 to get the manual transmission. There are some people who may not want all the power of the V8 (almost 500hp), but they want a manual transmission. Ford should have kept the optional manual transmission on the Ecoboost Mustangs.

If you want Eco boost and a 10 speed auto why are you looking at a Mustang? Old schooler here btw.

@@jimandersen3003 I had an ecoboost mustang at one time. Thing was pretty quick and fun to drive. It is a lighter car than the v8 so they handle better too. Having said that I'm really looking for a foxbody v8 mustang or a ws6 firebird with the LS motor if we're being honest.

It's really hard to justify the price when, for that price you can get anything from a C6 Z06 with very low miles or even a Aston Martin Vantage V8 with a T56 transmission with very low miles as well.

I’ve always wondered whether the GT performance pack variant with 3.55 rear ratio diff is faster than that of the regular 3.15 rear ratio diff

The difference matters in quickness and the OD's make the mileage the same almost.

They use to start at 38k. 43k for the track pac and i got mine used one year with 5k miles on it for 26k nine years ago. These prices are insane
