My 2013 Toyota Highlander rear differential has been wet for over 2 years. Just did an oil change, guess what? Was still full when I opened the top bolt. Unless you have drops of oil collecting , this is not a leak. I do understand the frustration, my car is 12 years old at this point, yours is brand new.

I removed the tail pipe from my 2023 P4X. Remove the tail pipe back section first.. reinstall the frame bracket for future use someday, this way it does not get lost. Measure 3" out and mark for the cut from the weld at the muffler where pipe meets muffler. I used a sawzall. Straight cut down it cuts easily. Debur inside and outside of pipe, install the 12" down turn pipe.. push it on all the way and use a clamp to tighten it up. Dumps before axle and has plenty of room, and it has a decent tone when you get on it or rev engine. Also removes 10-11 lbs of weight. My 2013 Xterra is doing the same thing. Factory sealant is junk. Probably didn't wait for it to set up properly. Plan to use Lube Locker gasket and properly torque the fasteners. Didn't want to use the ARB cover. It weighs a ton and no real benefit beyond the looks. Also make sure your relief valve is operating as it should. It could cause wheel bearing seal leaks.

The Frontier and Tacoma have been equal in quality for more than a decade now and several publications including repair pal list the Frontier as more reliable based on actual repairs. But, hey, you guys do what you want. I have nothing against the Tacoma except the driving position of the previous generation was unacceptable for me. But the idea that simply buying a Tacoma means you'll never have to do anything other than change the oil is foolish. Especially if you actually take the thing off road. I've owned 15 cars now including seven Nissans and two Toyotas and the repairs were negligible among all of them but they all needed something eventually. Nothing major though. And Nissans trucks have never had an issue with their transmissions that was the early CVT's and a coolant leak into the transmission from a fault in a radiator in the second gen Frontier. It got a lot of press and Nissan haters love to bring it up but the actual percentage of failures was very small. It's was just catastrophic if it happened to you. For some reason people love to ignore the endless engine oil leaks, VVT issues and frame rot Toyota has had, Buying a car is not without risk. They all can fail. When someone like JD Power rates initial quality even the best brands still have issues. In 2023 believe it or not, Dodge ranked best in initial quality with 140 problems per 100 vehicles. Toyota, well, they fell below the industry average with 194 problems per 100 vehicles putting them in 23rd place behind even Jeep. And Nissan ranked 13th with 180 problems per 100 vehicles. Obviously this doesn't speak to long term mechanical reliability as not all the problems are mechanical in nature. Most are from electronics from having too much garbage on modern cars. But it does show that everyone has issues and pretending your completely safe with any brand is silly.

Times have really changed, I had Studebakers, Packards, Chevs, and still have a 49 Ford f-3--none ever had clean pans, trans cases, or diffs. The drips where referred to as the vehicle marking its territory. I drove them that way, had to back then. You always check fluid levels everywhere from time to time and in fact the intervals were much shorter than today. I have newer cars now and they are much cleaner and easy to care for but it would seem that with fluids the same holds good as with the old--maybe just a habit of an old man.

Interestingly if you check your vehicles maintence service interval sheet you'll find that you should be checking your diff fluid level every 15,000 miles or once a year and changing it every 20,000 miles. When changing the fluid it would be the optimum time to drop that cover and re-seal it or change it out. Whichever gives you warm fuzzies. Personally I wouldnt worry about the cover being a little wet. Ive never owned a truck that didn't leak some fluid. even at that its not like its a difficult task to check the level when doing you oil change anyway. Unless your going to tell me you dont do your own oil changes and trust the $10 a hour Joe shit the ragman at your local Jiffy Lube with your $40,000 investment.
2023 Nissan Frontier Maintenance Schedule Intervals
When do you need to request a Nissan Frontier oil change? How often should you do Nissan tire pressure checks? When do you require new tires for a Nissan Frontier? Review the following maintenance intervals by mileage outlined by Nissan:
    Every 5,000 Miles
Get the oil and oil filter changed every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. Doing so ensures your engine stays lubricated, which prevents its many moving parts from rubbing against each other and causing premature wear. Changing the oil filter is just as essential since a dirty filter cannot remove metal shards, dirt, and other contaminants from the oil.
Checking the tires on your Nissan Frontier is important as well, especially if you navigate rough terrain.
    Every 10,000 Miles
The 10,000-mile mark calls for replacing the engine oil and filter, and brake fluid. It also requires having the propeller shaft lubricated. Inspection suggestions for this interval include:
    Brake pads and rotors
    Drive shaft boots (4WD models)
    Propeller shaft (4WD models)
    Exhaust system
    Axle and suspension parts
    Steering gear and linkage
    Every 15,000 Miles
Standard yearly maintenance, or every 15,000 miles, includes scheduling an oil change and filter replacement, tire rotations, and in-cabin microfilter replacement. Other essential maintenance concerns propeller shaft lubrication. Recommended inspections for this interval are:
    Brake lines and cables
    Propeller shaft (4WD models)
    Differential gear oil
    Transfer fluid
    Brake pads and rotors
    Drive shaft boots (4WD models)
    Every 20,000 Miles
Once your vehicle hits the 20,000-mile or two-year mark, it is time to schedule a brake inspection again and have the fluid replaced, if necessary. You also need the transfer fluid and differential gear oil changed. Get the propeller shaft greased to keep driving around Buna without causing vehicle damage. Nissan also suggests the following inspections:
    Propeller shaft (4WD models)
    Exhaust system
    Steering gear and linkage
    Axle and suspension parts
    Brake pads and rotors
    Drive shaft boots (4WD models)
    Every 30,000 Miles
This interval calls for scheduling anything your vehicle currently needs, such as Nissan Frontier tire pressure checks or new tires. If your tires are in good condition, have them rotated for preservation purposes. Additional essential maintenance includes replacing the brake fluid, engine air filter, engine oil and filter, and in-cabin micro filter. Lubricating the propeller shaft is also strongly suggested at this time, with recommended inspections including:
    Automatic transmission fluid
    Brake lines and cables
    Brake pads and rotors
EVAP vapor lines & fuel lines
    Exhaust system
    Drive shaft boots (4WD models)
    Transfer fluid
    Propeller shaft (4WD models)
    Steering gear and linkage
    Axle and suspension parts
    Differential gear oil

I have yet to see a used 22,23 frontier that didn’t have leaking axles, either around the diff cover or the tubes and pumpkin. Even saw a few leaking from the pinion seal. All trucks on the market right now have issues except the 4th gen taco, but it's only been out for a few months. Time will tell. All half tons except the titan have catastrophic engine failer for one reason or another. Everyone has to pray they aren't the 1 to 4% with a issue.
The mkd sized all have individual issues too. Oit of the issues all the trucks have, a rear diff leak is nothing. Through a kit on it and enoy that natural aspirated reliability.
Def keep us updated if there are some major things. Someone said they had trans issues. I have yet to see that anywhere online, other than the park issue. That was fixed.

Dana must skimp on the RTV with the diffs. I’ve owned two JK Wrangler’s and the covers leaked just like this well with in a year of owning them . I ended up upgrading the diff covers instead of fighting with the dealer.

For the amount of money their asking for these trucks, you shouldn't have to go out and buy another diff cover, I get that you were going to change it anyway, but still. I'll stick with my 2016 4runner. Good luck with the new cover.

Can't say I'm sold on it, I find it looks to much like the Tacoma. I always felt the 4runner had it's own identity which separated it from anything else out there. Maybe it might grow on me, but I still have a great sense of pride with my 5th Gen. As they say, there's something about owning a 4runner. Thanks for asking.
