      @@Predator20357 You know, I remember in the 90's a lot of the EU novels were actually kind of infamous for not being very original and basically just trying to rehash ideas from the OT movies.
      Like there used to be jokes about how often EU stories involved someone trying to clone Palpatine--"Damn, I wish I could come up with a cool new villain, but I'm a deadline for this so I guess I'll just clone the Emperor again."
      (And yes, it's extra-funny now that someone actually did it in an official Star Wars movie.)
      Stuff the Sun Crusher was actually the somewhat better version of this, because instead of just literally copying something from the movies, at least they were trying to think of something that would be even worse than a Death Star.
      If I remember that story, though, somebody finds the Sun Crusher in some unmapped system that the Empire used as a secret testing ground for superweapons, and there are also like fifteen fucking unused Death Stars just sitting around there, too--so the guy who steals the Sun Crusher has to escape from a whole goddamn swam of Death Stars chasing after him.
      It was pretty ridiculous.
      Some of the Legends novels are really good--but there are a lot of Legends novels. Some of them are actually painfully bad.

      Mac Deus sounds about right, it feels like it’s trying to up the stakes like so far out there. What you described of the Sun Crusher fleeing away from 15 Death Stars is funny but is like 300 percent stupid. What’s next? A Galaxy destroyer running away from 30 Sun Crushers with supreme reality warping armor and can move to anywhere on the galaxy?
      But yeah, some things that legends had was cool (clones actually having the blame on them for following the orders instead of saying “They were mind control from all guilt!” Basically) but all creativity and freedom comes with very very stupid ideas

    I actually really like the Scythe's design. Not every ship in a fleet should be a balanced do-all ship, it's cool that there could be some ships that are just bloody brilliant at one specific task.
    The purpose of the scythe seems to be just overwhelming firepower on a single target, so I'd imagine a handful of these would be unmatched in their ability to efficiently take down a large dreadnought. Of course they'd need an escort fleet, but as the Bismarck proved, NEVER leave your ship to fight alone.

    • @DarkVaati13
      @DarkVaati13 3 года назад +13

      Exactly. There is so much praise for the Lancer being the ultimate anti-fighter ship despite it being slow and barely usable against any other ships. The MC140, despite being a third of the size, can fight Pellaeon Destroyer on the same level and win. Plus the ship is fast so it's not like it takes too long to readjust its position to get back in the line of sight.

    • @xxsuperdragonslayerxx
      @xxsuperdragonslayerxx 3 года назад +3

      I don't think the overall idea is bad, so I agree. I just feel like having some weaponry on the rear with a greater range of motion and proper usage of the MC140 would make it a much better vessel

    • @thecactusman17
      @thecactusman17 3 года назад +8

      The issue isn't the single purpose, its the bad design FOR that purpose. In reality, the Mandator-IV is a much better fit for purpose design than the MC-140. It's primary bombardment cannons might be exposed, but only from one direction of attack while the other side is bristling with defensive weapons. If brought into low orbit many enemy ships and squadrons would be forced to attack from the defended side.
      By forcing the Scythe guns to the front ship captains are incapable of firing while maneuvering to maintain maximum defensive posture. If the Mandator is attacked from below it can deploy a fighter screen while the heavy cannons attack enemy warships or even flip upside down to present a larger array of conventional weaponry. If the Scythe is flanked it is completely defenseless and forced to flee. Also, if the shields go down the Scythe will lose all of its external weaponry and hangers immediately while other ships have to be individually targeted to eliminate the various defensive systems.

      @@thecactusman17 "Bristling with weapons?" The Mandator IV has a rubbish amount of weaponry for a ship that size, and they aren't even capable weapons since one lone fighter is able to cripple them by itself.
      Also, most starfighters have been shown to function effectively in atmosphere so low orbit strategies would likely be useless.
      Both the Scythe and the Mandator have huge blind spots, and both would need an escort fleet and fighters to defend them.

    I've always thought that The Last Jedi's Mandator IV is either a prototype or an unfinished ship rushed into service because the few complete Mandators were busy assaulting the New Republic. That would explain the unfinished look and relative lack of anti-fighter weapons (more were to be installed later). Then again, it's not like it's a ship that you'd deploy without an escort, it has fantastic range, and it seems to be pretty durable - the Resistance dropped literally 1,000 proton bombs on a specific weak spot they had identified from its blueprints (presumably to breach the reactor) and whole chunks of it survived with functional life support (as shown in Season 2 of the Resistance show). And it has a fighter wing. So it's not like it's at risk of a single Y-wing flying over and taking it out - several things had to go wrong for Fulminatrix to go down. Combined with its incredible offensive potential (its cannons can clearly slaughter Lucrehulks, space stations, Star Destroyers and MC cruisers from long range, in addition to ground targets) and it definitely has a role in its fleet that it performs well. And I think it's cool to see an on-screen Star Wars capital ship in a different niche than "battleship that's also a carrier" or "super-dreadnought." I've never understood the raw disdain people have for it.

      I like the idea of a dedicated bombardment ship, but the design on this one just isn't there. The oversized articulated cannons are kind of dumb (they elevate so slowly that you might as well capitalize on the power and hull benefits of making them spinal mounted and drop the rule that Ships Must Fly Upright). The bridge is also everything bad about Star Destroyer bridges but turned up to 11. To top it off, the point defense is not built like point defense; apart from only having it on one side, those are anti-corvette cannons at the very least (you don't need a turret bigger than a starfighter for fighting starfighters). If it's really going to be a dedicated bombardment ship, slim it down to focus on the main weapon instead of having a massive amount of extra ship that's just taking up space. It'll be faster and easier to defend, and will probably hit harder.

  • @TaraZaraChara
    @TaraZaraChara 3 года назад +22

    Somehow the Mandator IV makes the most sense out of all of these. A dreadnought designed for orbital bombardment could actually be very effective if accompanied by a fleet and on a mission to flatten the surface of a planet, which it can do with great efficiency. It's a shame disney wasted the ship. However it does have some serious design flaws, like the over-exposed bridge and lack of point-defense canons on the underside.

    • @AltoStratusX1

      Kinda fits with the specialization of the Empire/First Order. I mean without the First Orders nonsense somehow having wealth and power out of nowhere. The Imps always had more specialized role Capital Ships and fighter/bombers like the Interdictior and various TIE roles, anti fighter Lancer frigates or Tartan Cruisers etc because they could afford to make a capital ship whose sole purpose is a turbolaser platform. Even the Imperial Class needed support ships and it's the most multi role thing they have (Maybe tie defender). The Rebels tried to make use of everything and multiroled stuff that wasn't even designed as such.

Its weapons can be destroyed as they are outside the hull, its got a big window on the front (so in theory ramming it through anything breaks that and kills the crew), its biggest weakness though, its engines. They by their nature, have to be outside the hull, or more precisely be a big hole in the hull, shoot it in the ass, the ship's inards all explode, your left with an empty floating hull. Oh and a final point, even if the ship is indestructable, it hitting a solid object (like a star destroyer) would kill the crew, inertia is a thing, and well, unless it has the most overpowered inertial compensators too, you hit a big object at speed, you turn the crew into paste. That said I saw a video on how the death star firing its super laser would turn the crew into paste too, recoil is a thing, and yes lasers do actually generate recoil (even if SW doesn't actually use lasers, it uses some energised plasma weapons).
      As for its weapons, meh, they exist in other series, they are basically Nova bombs from Andromeda, except that only this ship carries them. If you developed such a powerful missile, you'd think you'd deploy them throughout your fleet rather than putting all your eggs in 1 basket.

      @@cgi2002 the Suncrusher was literally a miniature version of the Death Star. Everything was made of the exact same indestructible metal. It's engines hidden around the edges. It didn't need a bulky and heavy hyperdrive engine because it's sublight was already capable of hyperspace on their own. The ship was truelly impervious and was impossible to take down, but it's pilot and lasers were not and had to vacate the area once it fired off its main weapon so that they weren't killed by the star going supernova and then crushing into a super black hole. They did try to surround it and wedge it in place between ships to stop it gaining enough speed to ram someone.
      The only way to stop it was wait till the pilot left the cockpit and try to get onboard and lock them out and take it.
      It was the same scientist that designed the Death Star that designed the Suncrusher. All of its faults were finally fixed in a tiny little miniature machine of pure death. It was later flown on autopilot into the Black holes to hopefully and finally be destroyed.
      However later Dalla finally got her hands on some scarily serious tech that perhaps might of finally managed to destroy it, but we will never know.

    The Mandator-IV is actually very practical for what it is: a long range bombardment weapon system designed for engaging a target after space superiority is acheived.
    Rian just didn't understand what he was looking at and decided it needed to be a miniature Death Star setpiece. He could have made a better movie by reimagining the ship as a narrative motivator.
    Reimagine the entire film around this ship and it becomes vastly more interesting AND gives the middle of the film more exciting story potential. The Resistance is forced to flee, as they escape the Mandator drops out of hyperspace and leaves a smoking crater hundreds of miles across at their abandoned base with a single cannon. It refocuses the other on the fleeing ships and blasts the nearest one to pieces in a single blow from extreme range. The energy charge starts rebuilding slowly, it will take hours to fully recharge and the biggest ship will require both cannons combined.
    Now the whole idea of chasing down the fleet makes more sense, and jumping to another planet where they can hide will just invite a massacre. The Resistance needs to destroy the Mandator while a team sneaks aboard the flagship to disable the Hyperspace tracker. All the while the Mandator picks off smaller ships with the bombardment cannon.
    At the film's midpoint, Poe leads Blue Squadron and the Resistance starfighter reserves in a desperate, unauthorized assault against the Mandator. They destroy the bombardment weapon but Kylo slips past their fighters to destroy the Raddus' bridge, killing most of the leadership. Rose Tico's sister, all of Cobalt squadron and most of Blue squadron dies in the assault on thre Mandator. Finn and Rose are captured by a tractor beam while trying to sneak aboard the Supremacy with BB-8. Their last words before capture to Poe are to leave them and save the Resistance fleet. Poe returns and tells Holdo to jump to any nearby system where they can scatter to safety but she now holds him personally responsible for the loss of Resistance leadership after taking their fighter screen for the attack. She throws him in the brig; the fighter screen should have been their final distraction to cover the escaping shuttle pods after disabling the hyperspace tracker.

Tales of The Jedi and all those Old Republic lore tried so hard to show that it was still a sci fi space fantasy but also somehow thousands of years before the movies. So rather then like have modern bullets and afterburner tech it was random magic unbreakable swords, musket lasers and space ship boats that are both prehistoric and shitty as well as futuristic. Then kotor came along and took all the good parts of the setting and made it just the standard "star wars level" of technology so you could enjoy the setting and story without the weird/jarring "wooden ships". This is coming from a guy who really did like a lot of the Tales of the Jedi aesthetic.

It was so strong that it's exploding reactor core actually launched the prisoner from underneath like a rocket isntead of just blowing it up. Then you've got crap like Beskar and probably others I'm forgetting besides. Basically Star Wars is full of these one off/super rare 'super tech' items so shitting on the Sun Crusher for it has always seemed a tad hypocritical to me.
      The Sun Crusher was bad less because of the uber tech, but mainly because it was basically invented to facilitate a badly thought out mess of a story where a guy who murders billions is basically just freed of any responsibility by mumbling something about 'force ghosts' and then it's basically all forgotten and forgiven.

    This is my list and my reasons... the TL;DR is at the bottom.
    Worst:
    Pirate ships in Space are Absolutely garbage...
    1. The wood isn't going to block radiation. (will kill the people on board)
    2. They are lightweight so easily destroyed/damaged by explosions.
    3. The wood doesn't keep atmosphere, thus the people on board will eventually run out of air.
    4. The wood will lose all integrity to the heat/cold differential of space, so the ships will break up on their own.
    5. They aren't designed with the 3 dimensions of space so their underside is completely vulnerable.
    Second to Worst:
    Sun Crusher is the most lore broken thing in Legends...
    1. Negates the Death Stars by simply being able to do more than them with little missiles.
    2. Can't be destroyed in any way.
    3. Destroyed anything in its path.
    Third to Worst:
    The Xyston-Class... I know it wasn't on the list, but it deserves to be on it as it a mix of two other ships...
    1. It has the same problems as the Sun Crusher causing other "super weapons" to be impotent while also suffering from the same flaw as the First Order Dreadnought... it was purposely designed to be easily destroyed.
    2. It's an upscale version of the Imperial-I with a single gun turret on it, completely uninspired lazy design.
    Fourth to Worst:
    First Order Dreadnought is incompetently designed in order to give the Resistance Plot Armour so Paige Tico can go on her death ride...
    1. This is unforgivable... it's one thing to use a weak point in a ship's design to destroy them (shield bulbs on Star Destroyers, the A-Wing Ramming the Bridge of the Executor), it's completely another thing to purposely design a ship so it _will_ be easily destroyed. The ship was vulnerable to Proton Torpedo runs made by several squadrons of X-Wings, B-Wings, and Y-Wings... A hundred or so Proton Torpedoes could do the same thing a dozen of Proton Bombs as they are only hitting the central reactor... or they could use fewer Proton Torpedoes and destroy the guns themselves.
    Fifth to Worst:
    The MC-130... impracticable design...
    1. That's just it... the fins with the weapons are easily destroyed but destroying them doesn't impair the functionality of the ship at all. This isn't a _dumb_ ship EckhartsLadder! You just don't like the design when there are much dumber ships out there.
    TL;DR
    I would take a cool looking ship with some impractical design elements (as long as they don't inpaire the functionaility of the ships) over ships which are purposely designed to _fail_ and I would take the purposely designed to fail ships over ships which destroy the lore/immersion of Star Wars.

      I agree with your 1st and 2nd choice, but start to disagree with you after that.
      Xyston-Class: It's definitely "dumb" in many aspects, however ultimately it's a Legends era Eclipse-class reskinned to look like an ISD-1 and with a bit more power to its superweapon (the Eclipse-class could only crack the crust of a planet IIRC). I do like that its superweapon isn't an "instakill" though like the Death Star, that it has to fire several "pulses" to actually destroy the planet. If the ship was more thought out, with a unique design and maybe either a less powerful superlaser and/or one that takes longer, it wouldn't be terrible. What was dumb about the Xyston-class was less the ship itself and more everything else surrounding it (like not knowing which way was up). It is weird though that it's about 1/3rd the size of the Mandator-IV, and yet vastly more powerful. Though personally I prefer smaller ships so meh.
      I do want to add here that the idea that their shields don't work in atmosphere isn't a wholly new concept in Star Wars. Some older lore did suggest ISDs struggled in atmosphere because of how much energy had to be put into the repulsors to keep them afloat in a gravity well. Though how well that excuse works when the same reactor can power a planet-killing superweapon...
      Mandator-IV Siege Dreadnought: The ship is horribly under-equipped for its size, especially in regards to AA guns (though that could be said for most ships in SW). What's worse is the AA guns it does have are useless, they literally have the same flaw as the turbolasers on the Death Star (fighters are too small/nimble) but at least it sort of made sense with the DS-1. However monitor type ships did exist. This things biggest flaw is arguably that it's too damned big for what it is. It has potential, if more thought was put into it or if the director who came up with it had half a brain. Sadly because neither of those proved to be the case, and thus it definitely falls somewhere within the top 10 dumbest Star Wars designs. Between the original 4 however I would consider it the least dumb.
      MC-140 Scythe: A quick google search didn't yield results on the size of this thing, but it is called a "battlecruiser." According to SW Legends reckoning, specifically the Anaxes War College System, a battlecruiser fell somewhere between a Star Destroyer and a Dreadnought, meaning this is a big ship. That's very problematic because in that case it's very lightly armed for its size. Having all of its weapons facing forward also doesn't make sense considering Star Wars naval "surface" battles are fought more like age of sail battles than even WW1 or WW2 style battles. Lots of big guns at relatively close range. Compared to a Star Destroyer both can focus fire on targets directly in front of them, but the ISD can put out a not inconsiderable amount of punishment to targets on its flanks while the MC-140 is mostly helpless. If the MC-140 was a lot smaller, more in the range of a corvette or frigate, it would make a lot more sense. Basically make it a missile/torpedo boat or fast attack craft or whatever you want to call it. In other words something that blurs the lines between fighter and ship. As is however, given its size, armament, and layout relative to the style of warfare in Star Wars, it's a dumb design. Not as dumb as a Pirates of the Caribbean cameo in SW, but pretty dumb for something that's supposed to work with the naval doctrine of the universe.

      @khadenallast4495 3 года назад

      @@129das See, those are an example of a craft that has the potential to make sense in-universe but idiot writers make it otherwise. Imagine for a moment that they weren't really bombers, but instead initially designed for small cargo or firefighting or police/prisoner transport, etc. Then the Resistance comes along and, out of desperation for any kind of bomber, acquired some and strapped some guns on them and filled their cargo bays with bombs. Now everything about them makes sense, from their terrible design to their low speeds, and it makes the Resistance look all the more desperate.
      But no, the braindead powers that be made it a dedicated military craft commissioned by the New Republic during the Galactic Civil War to serve as a strategic bomber, in a universe where orbital bombardment exists...

    I think something they could change about the MC140 Scythe is just put general PD lasers on its main body as well as a few turbolasers, and replace all of the turbolasers and hanger bays for missle and proton torpedo lanchers so it can be used as a ship that could unleash its barrage down on either a few key enemy ships like say some kind of interdictor so that they could then escape, or use them to target down some critical spot on a larger enemy ship such as its shield generators so that the scythe could basically be used as a platform to unleash a huge amount of damage initially in a battle to gain some kind of advantage, with the rest of it performing almost like a small carrier/corvette, protecting other more important ships.

And it really does have LUDICROUS amounts of firepower for it’s size.
