I'd have to join with the others and say that that's a very cool and clever idea. To me I like the bowl you made, only thing I might have done is before you melted the wax off, put a coloured dye ontop of the ebony finish if you wanted a bit more pop/colour to the piece.

This looks cool Jack was that bees wax you put on first and then black die love the effect the natural wood grain is great too love the yellow color of it
Cheers Wade. Yeah bees wax and then ebonising solution.. it’s made by dissolving wire wool in vinegar and turns the tannins in the wood jet black. It doesn’t work on all woods only those Hight I’m tannin like oak, cherry, sweet chestnut, holly etc. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
What a great technique. I'd never thought of something like that. I wonder if you could do that with different colors, like red and green. etc.. not paint but like the wood reacts to the chemicals used or stains maybe? hmm...
Wow that's an awesome idea! You do some fantastic work 👏! What brand bowl gouge do you use? It was razor sharp the way it was cutting the wood. Take care and GOD BLESS!
Hi Stephen, thanks for your kind words. It’s appreciated. I’m not going to tell you what brand gouges I work with, not to be mean or anything like that but because I want to impress on you that the brand has absolutely nothing to do with how sharp they are or how well they cut. Gouges like all turning tools should always be sharp , Il never do more than say 10 cuts before nipping back to the grinder. For finishing cuts only a tool straight off the grinding wheel will do. After that the important bit is muscle memory, and the solution for that is to get hold of a full tree, as big as you Can possibly get, cut it up into 9” blanks and get those suckers on the lathe.. set the rpm around 500 -1000 And make ONLY shavings..out of all that wood. Do it all in a week, shavings arnt waste. You can compost them or you can use them on your garden paths. Or donate them for animal bedding as I do. At some point while your blasting your way through that tree the gouge will click, and become an extension of your Arm.. and in time an extension of your mind.. but quantity is THE ONLY way to get that connection with your gouge. The gouges I use are mostly from crown but I also use Axminster tools 5/8th gouges too. Crown costs £90 Axminster costs £50 they say the crown holds its edge longer, I say that’s a load of s@*t There’s no difference between them besides I can sharpen the crown twice as many times before I loose an inch of steel. Hope all this helps.
@@JackMackWoodturning I use danish oil on meranti and the more gold / brown woods like Plum. It must just be the effect of the wax keeping the other bits clear of it that makes the colour difference. Thanks.
@@JackMackWoodturning I've had a go at the ebonizing on a goblet. It turned out really well for a first attempt. Thank you. If I could work out how to send an image I would.
The pattern on this bowl is very nice. (What was your final finish?) It reminds me of a similar practice where strings of hot melt glue were randomly placed on the outside of the bowl, then a dye was sprayed on and after drying, the hot melt glue was easily scraped off. I think that I first saw this on a Mike Waldt video about 4 or 5 years ago.
