#42 Woodturning How to Stain and Colour an 11" Sycamore Bowl
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 дек 2015
- It's been a while since I did any bowl turning or colouring, so it was great to get back in the workshop this week and turn a sycamore bowl from Ed Oliver at Oliver's Woodturning in Kent, UK.
You can see the great collection of blanks available at Oliver's Woodturning at www.oliverswoodturning.co.uk. He has just taken in loads of sycamore, so why not grab a blank or two and have a go at colouring like this...let me know I sent you!

Hi Martin, you are a natural communicator and an excellent teacher. Brilliant videos.
Who the hell dislikes this video!? You may not like the finished product but you have to admire the skill and artistry that goes into it. I think it’s superb and off to buy some colour!
Another brilliant demo
You certainly came back with a bang mate, that is absolutely stunning. Thank you for taking us through the process you use, and showing the techniques you employ. Excellent video.
Take care
Mike
I love it when the professional guys like yourself are willing to share the fact that you don’t always get it right first time...it gives us novices a real sense of reality rather than always feeling inadequate and stupid. My professional tutor is exactly the same and puts up with my inabilities! I am sure I can hear him scream in the garden when I am at his place.
Hey Kevin. Thanks for the comment. No-one's perfect, and if I can help people through my mistakes and help prevent them making the same ones, then the job's a good'un.
I am from North Carolina,USA, i just starting and I really love your work,it is beautiful!
Martin, that turned out great. I enjoyed watching the process that you took to get the colors just right. Your work paid off, that's a beautiful piece. And yes, you succeeded in making it both interesting and inspirational.
@17:21 "Oh, yeah!" Gotta love that feeling.
Beautiful Platter Martin!! you cant beat a bit of old school colouring!! came out stunning mate!! Steve.
Beautiful Piece very nice video Martin! Thanks for sharing your colorizing process and being honest about it.
Great project and a lovely final piece Martin! Great to see you turning again :)
Martin, thank you so much for the great details, you're definitely a Bob Ross of wood turning! Every time you're about to add something I think... oh man, he's gonna mess it up! Then BOOM- It turns out even better! I'm new to adding color to my wood turnings, but can't wait to try it out :)
Beautiful job Martin. That grain just pops. Keep it up brother.
Lovely bowl Martin really therapeutic to watch great end result thanks Daniel .:)
Thanks Martin. Good learning skills..:>
Very detailed video, good work. The bowl looks great
That looks great.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Martin,
You are a real master of color. Thank you for sharing your technique with everyone.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
that looks incredible!!! the more i watch your videos the more i want to give turning a go and have just decided that in the new year i will purchase a lathe :) Thanks Martin :)
***** will do, i will post them on my channel :) thanks again :)
Great piece Martin.👍 Whenever I use blue dyes my kids think I've been squashing Smurfs! 😂 Good use of gloves... might steal that idea.😉
Have a good one!
I love your creative way of thinking about woodturning! I hope that someday I will create something as beautiful as your crafts and I will be able to earn for a living by woodturning. Have a nice day Martin and continue making so great videos!:)
Love it Martin!! Especially that you showed the whole trial and tribulations of coloring this stunning bowl, I'll sure try this on my own, now I've got a little scorching and even a little less coloring, under my belt. I'm going to make a series of Cypress bowls and plates to try this on, it's a light colored wood which takes well to scorching and to coloring, I might even mix some alcohol dye instead of water dye... might go crazy!! :) Thanks for sharing Martin!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing and happy holidays.
Great end look, I was not sure during the process. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
Very nice plate my friend, congratulations! Cheers! Daniel
Very well done. Great work.
Very nice plate Martin, Best wishes Harry

Must admit I've never been a big fan of it, but this (and the others you have done) is superb. You may have even persuaded me to have a go. All the best Ian.
Very nice Martin thanks for sharing
Hello Martin,
Your projects are never boring and always interesting,
That's another beautiful bowl.
I wish I had your artistic flair.
Hope the Christmas season goes well for you.
Best wishes,
Alan,
Love it,absolutely love it!! Hope you get the compressor sorted out soon! Cheers Martin, and Merry Christmas, Keith.
Hi Martin, I have never thought about burning just the inside of rim of the platter before. I really like the effect. I also like how you burn the outside and brought it in to meet the interior burning. I struggle with selecting and applying colors. You have inspired me. Thanks, Tina in St Augustine Florida
Good morning Tina. Thank you for your kind comment. It's a privilege to be able to inspire people through RUclips.
All the best,
Martin
I have received "Big Magic - Creative living beyond fear" book for Christmas and your video fits right in! In order to to explore creativity, we need to manage fear (of messing up the work) and you do that pretty well. So this interesting video goes hand-in-hand with the topic of the book. Thanks for the video and the result is stunning.
very nice Martin, Best wishes for the festive season from Deb and myself.Cheers from OzJohnny
Brilliant, off to the workshop I go!
Enjoy!
Stunning piece Martin. Time very well spent and great to see the process.
Just wandered over to your channel from Mike Waldt's and am so glad I did. Am new to turning so I am seeking to learn all I can from all that is offered on YT. You offer a treasure trove of info. Thanks so much and I'm, obviously, on board as a subscriber.
Thank you very much for your kind words and your subscription. I am so pleased you enjoyed the video and hope you continue to enjoy my productions.
Best wishes,
Martin
thanks to show the techniques very nice
joao
very good love your work, I found this video very inspiring I would like to give this a go hope I do your work justice take care and keep up the good work I love watching
It’s nice to see I’m not the only one who takes several tries to get the desired look just right. I would be shocked if my finishing ever came out just right on the first try.
Hi Joe. It's never a bad thing to go over something again if you're not happy with it. I play with stuff regularly until I'm happy with it.
All the best,
Martin
martin nice work.
Brilliant day in Carpentery Store Nass yesterday with Martin
Hi Michael. Thanks for coming along to the Carpentry Store. It was a good weekend despite the weather on Friday.

Thanks dave
Hi Martin,
I’ve been watching you on RUclips for the last few months and trying out some of the things you have shown. It’s really great.
I’ve also been watching you make the lady with the hat video and I think you are a superb artist.
Can you tell me where you got the wood in your back yard and also a list of prices for your dyes.
Keep up the good work and updates on Hampshire Sheen.
Thanks Brian
Hi Brian. Thanks for asking, and thanks for your kind words. Sorry it's taken a while to get back to you. The wood I get comes from all sorts of places. Some I buy, some is given to me, some comes from trees around our property. The colours are available in different sizes: 15ml Sample Set of all 12 is £24.99. Full Set of 12 in 150ml Bottle is £50.00 and the individual bottles are £8.50 each. Retailers can be found here: www.hampshiresheen.com/buy.
Things have been very busy with the business I've been struggling to find the time to film stuff!
All the best,
Martin
Hi Martin I wanted to ask you how thick should a platter be I've never made one before if you could help me that would be great by the way I love your video's! Larry from the USA
Thank you for your question Larry from the USA. I have added it to my Q&A notes.Martin
It seems something has gone wrong with this video - there's no sound at all. I made sure it's not a problem on my end.
All of my woodworks I made with wood prix. Google and try it.
