  • In response to a question about alcohol based and water based stains in the comments to my last video, I've done the same technique as last week, but with water based stains. Hope you enjoy it...
    Please be aware that woodturning is a hazardous activity. These videos are only intended to show you what I do - they are not tutorials.
    Since I started making these videos in 2017, I have been lucky enough to receive the support of some manufacturers with materials to use in my videos. Since May 2018, Chestnut Products have provided me with stains, an iridescent paints sample set, lacquers and waxes. I'd like to thank them for their kind and generous support. Martin Saban-Smith has provided me with a sample set of Intrinisic Colours. All other products and tools, unless where indicated, have been bought from suppliers at retail prices. Products mentioned in my videos are for information purposes so that viewers know what I have used.

    I really appreciate you doing these colouring videos Stewart. I am colourblind and scared of attempting colouring in case I make a complete mess of the wood so your videos are really helpful because I can see the different effects achieved by layering different colours. People might say "Just do it and see what happens" but that's not easy when you've been told, your whole life, that your colour recognition is always wrong. Having your videos as a roadmap will be really helpful and reassuring.
    Thank you, Brendan.

      Thank you, Brendan. It's great to hear how helpful it is to keep making these videos. I do wonder if I'm getting a bit repetitive! Certainly I am with this one. Thanks for taking the time to comment - it's really appreciated. Cheers!

    • @baconsoda
      @baconsoda 5 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't be concerned that you are getting repetitive because we cannot all try all the combinations of colours so watching you do your experiments is helping the rest of us narrow down the range of options. The worst that can happen is that someone decides not to watch a particular video but a lot more of us will watch it and get good information from it. Even someone seeing colour blends they hate is good because that's saving them the time and bother of discovering that particular mix themselves. I think you are providing very valuable information.

      Who says what is right and wrong? It’s more about who likes what and who doesn’t...just have a go is my way of thinking if YOU think it’s really bad have another go and if you like it who cares if anyone else does or not... Kevin

    Love the effect, appreciate the boldness in exploring. I tried inks of differing colors, also played with diluting colors with water to produce lighter shades. Try it, you may just like it.

    Not sure if I like it or not. They seem very dark, especially the blue, the red gives a bit of a glow. I am not sure that the black is a good starting point, it often overwhelms colour and kills it. I will look forward to the acrylics.
    Thanks
    James

    • @stewartfurini
      @stewartfurini  5 лет назад

      Hi James - yep, the blue is far too dark. The others are clearer. I have done something similar with just blues in spirit stains. It didn't give the same contrast though. Thanks for commenting. Cheers!

    Hi Stewart ... Really enjoyed the spread in Woodturning magazine ... I'm a digital subscriber (quite but cheaper than the printed edition in North America). I use powdered dyes produced by a company in Wisconsin (KEDA Dyes) ... they can be used with either water or alcohol so long as you don't mind mixing your own color concoctions.

      Hi Gerald - thanks for commenting. I'm delighted you enjoyed the magazine piece! I haven't done any mixing of my own stains - sounds fun though, so I might get into it. Cheers!

    Hello Stewart, Thinking about showing the interesting markings, have you considered colouring the centre, where at the moment it is is a little plain, and then keeping the rim a simple two tone, perhaps accentuating the profile with a burnished effect, earth/orange/earth, blended rings, with blues,greena and purple dabbed in the centre. I was thinking that the centre could be a sudued,( busy), part, while the more uniform rim might not camouflage the markings in the wood as much.
    Regards, Glenn. :-)

    • @stewartfurini
      @stewartfurini  5 лет назад

      Nice idea, Glenn. I might give it a try after I've had a go with acrylic paints. Generally, I prefer there to be some wood left showing on the platter, but I have done a few totally coloured pieces. Cheers!

    Each to their own. I never liked using water based stain. It doesn't go on as nicely or make the grain glow as well as spirit stain. Just my opinion. Thanks for the video bub. 👍

    • @stewartfurini
      @stewartfurini  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks, Simon. I haven't had as much experience of using the water-based ones. I think of them as having an earthier kind of appearance, but I haven't tried a very high gloss finish on them yet. I'm seriously considering some vivid acrylic colours next time!

    I saw in a previous video, ±2 years ago, that you sealed the wood before staining. When/why did you stop sealing the wood first?

    • @stewartfurini
      @stewartfurini  4 года назад

      Hi Mark - I haven't done any sealing of wood before colouring now for at least a year or even more. For some applications of colour, the sealer was helpful in stopping it soak in so much, but I tend to just work with that now. I think it came out of conversations with Terry at Chestnut Products who cautions against sealing the wood first, adding colour and then sealing again. Two coats of sealer aren't a good thing he says. I'm pleased with the results of adding colour and then sealing the wood before my final finish. Cheers!

    Is this a subliminal advertisment for Google Chome? lol
    I mjust confess, I think I prefer the spirit stains, they just seem to be a bit more vibrant somehow. Interesting to see the contrast between the two though.
    Congrats on the feature in WT magazine.

    • @stewartfurini
      @stewartfurini  5 лет назад +1

      Very subliminal!! Luckily, it's not exactly the same colours.....interesting to get ideas about the differences between the two types of stains. Cheers!

  • @Bawdsey64
    @Bawdsey64 5 лет назад +1

    Problem Stewart, with you destroying the stained version we could not do a straight comparison between both versions. For me the water based version was in need of a half inch bowl gouge treatment as personally I prefer spirit based stain, much nicer aroma for a start.
    Would not the spirit stained based product have had some effect on the wood even though you had removed a few millimetres of timber?
    Have yet to read the article in Woodturning but pleased to see you getting your due exposure to the worlds turning public. So maybe next year not only the Chestnut Symposium in Lincolnshire but hows about AAW in USA because you do original stuff even though you sometimes don't know when to stop?
    Cheers
