I love the colors as well as leaving the inside of the bowl in the natural wood.

Hi Stewart - That came up an absolute treat. Love your treatment of the colours with the silver paint, too. It really added something special to the piece. The final blend it tremendous.
The danish oil tends to add a bit of depth to the colours when applied and allowed to dry, and you absolutely did the right thing by not adding it over the silver - I wouldn't know what the reaction would have been with the metallic paint!

Well, an older video I'd missed! I really like this one, nice contrast with the natural inside. The spray lacquer was a nice finish, personally I don't think Danish oil would have had the same effect.

Very nice use of the different colours. Turned out lovely. You've got me wondering about using the spirit-based leather dyes I have on wood now, too :)

One of the best I think (for what that’s worth). Ash can be difficult to colour successfully but you've carried it off. Look forward to seeing you at BWTC in April (???).

Stewart that turned out better than I expected. I had a decorative painting business for twenty years and have a lot of leftover paints and glazes, and your use of color is inspiring me to incorporate my materials into my turning. May I make a suggestion for a paint and stain applicator (best for water-based usage), I found that natural sea sponges had a wonderfully texture and shape that allows for a much better naturally random coverage. They can be cleaned up with soap and water and reused many times. Paper towel can leave a blotchy texture.

It came out really nicely, the blend of colours are excellent.
I love the finish with Danish Oil but my tin says to leave it for 6 hours between coats and it needs 3 coats or more.To be honest it was still tacky several days after the final coat, maybe it's because it's cold.

Stewart Furini The downside is the lengthy drying/curing time, otherwise it's a lovely shiny finish.

RickTurns Thank you Rick. Glad you like it. I've not tried watercolour paint enter. So far all I have used are spirit stains, acrylic paints and Intrinsic Colours. Lots more methods to try!
Great job, very inspiring. Do you apply the lacquer on top of the wax or was the wax the last thing you did? Roughly how long between colours or do you just do one after the other? I have tried and failed! I always end up with muddy looking finish, like a childs paint brush pot!! I am going to try once more, fingers crossed.
Hi Christopher - thanks for commenting. The wax goes on over everything else at the end. For drying time, I just waited a few minutes. The paint takes a bit longer than the stains to dry but not much longer when applied thinly. It can be speeded up a bit by patting it with dry paper towels. Glad you found the video helpful. Cheers!
Ok you’ve inspired me! I’m going to give it a go. Just one question given the inside of the bowl was already turned how did you hold it on the lathe? I can’t see any cole jaws.....

At about 3.05 in the video I mention cutting a recess in the bowl part to hold the piece on the lathe, but I realise that I edited out both the turning of this dovetail recess and its removal when I remounted the bowl on its foot! That's why you don't see any cole jaws. Hope this explains it clearly. Cheers!

Did you apply any sealer before colouring and did you find the cold temperatures, from winter, had any affect on your colours and finishes?

Thanks for commenting, James. I didn't seal the wood - the cold didn't have an effect on the finish drying that I particularly noticed - the workshop temperature was probably about 13 degrees (celsius!)
in enjoyed your video and the bowl came out great, how do you keep such a crisp edge on the bowl rim, doesn't look like any of the stain bled onto it? thanks.

Hi Stewart. I've watched many video's of your colouring video's & you should be proud of your work. I need to ask if sanding sealer applied before or after colouring is preferred & whether it changes the finished appearance if it is applied before colouring. I have seen only a few other turners apply before colours most I think seal after colours to preserve colours.
Hi Trebor - sorry for the delay in replying - I've been away for a few days. Mostly, I seal after colouring now. When I have put sealer on before colour, the colour takes longer to dry, though I think it might look a bit brighter as it doesn't soak into the wood so much. However, if I'm putting a gloss finish over the top, this makes it bright enough. On unsealed wood, the more layers of colour that go on, the deeper the colour looks. I think is because in the Chestnut spirit stains, the shellac forms a sort of sealer as the coats go on. Hope this answers your question. Cheers!

I'm glad you liked the green screen - it was fun to do, but it took a long time getting it to look right (the perfectionist part of me can see some faults with it still...). I've still got some more ideas to do videos on, but it might be after Christmas for the next one. Cheers!
I was a bit dubious about this one when you started, Stewart, but it just got better and better as you went along. Despite Martin's assurances, I'm dubious about using Danish oil over acrylic. (Of course, there's no real definition of "Danish oil", so perhaps Martin's version would work...) As for the foot -- no need to follow the lemmings over the cliff :-) I'm not at all impressed by bowls that look like ball of dough dropped from a height... Clyde
Thanks, Clyde - I will try the Danish oil sometime, but only over the intrinsic colours. I got a message from Martin saying he wouldn't have used the oil over the acrylic paint that I used along with the intrinsic colours. Glad you liked the end result! P.S. I normally leave the recess on my platters too.....;)

Thanks, Helen! It had been turned before while wet - I left a tenon on the foot and then turned a recess inside the bowl which was then held in the chuck in expansion mode.
I am just starting to get into coloring. I have watched about 10 of your videos and see that sometimes you use sanding seal and other times you don't. Is there a reason why? Is it the type of paint you use? Sorry for the very basic question.
Hi Al - it's taken me a while to work out when to use it and when not to. So, if I am going to use acrylic paints directly on wood, I will usually use sanding sealer first. If it's stains, I usually won't use sanding sealer first. But, I might use it if I want the spirit stain colours to be a bit more vibrant and I'm not going to use mulitple coats of stain. If the wood is sealed first and stains are used, it stops the stain soaking into the wood so much.
Before adding lacquer, whether it's over stain or acrylic paint, I use sanding sealer between the finish and the lacquer. I think this is more necessary over the spirit stains.
If spirit stains have been used over wood that was first stained, it will take longer to dry so any sealer put over the top needs to go on only after the stains have had enough time to dry, otherwise it can dilute the stains and shift them a bit.

Sorry sir but I have had to give a dislike to this video but I am new to your channel so I will go and watch your other video's. The bit that I don't like is the multi screen as it makes me feel sick..
