I have been following your work for some time now and slowly trying my hand at colouring. This piece is inspirational. I have all the kit needed. I just need make some bigger blanks. Thanks mate
Martin, That bowl turned out very well. That would be a piece that should make anyone happy to have. Thanks for taking your time to video and post. Jim
Hi Jim! Great to hear from you again this week. I hope this bowl makes someone happy if they buy it after I get it up for sale. All the best, and see you tomorrow for Turner's Journey. Martin
Hi Martin. On your recommendation when we met at Harrogate I have just received my texturing tool and hope to emulate your fantastic piece of work. As always, thank you for sharing 🌞
You are so inspiring. I'm very new to woodturning and am loving how you are pushing the boundaries of creativity...looking forward to trying out my new airbrush!
Hi Maggie. Thanks for the comment. Good to hear from you. Boundaries are made to be pushed, and I love pushing them, personally. I hope you enjoy your new airbrush. Would love to see what you do with it. All the best, Martin
Hi Michael. Thank you so much for you kind words. Until you have a go with colour, you're not going to know if you like them or not! Do you think I should do a video on how, why and on what woods I use colour? Thanks, Martin
M. Saban Smith Woodturning I think that would be most helpful to All of us that are unsure of how to begin, or if we really would like it. You have to admit it takes some genius to blend like you do. I've seen others and they don't measure up.
Very Nice Martin , I,am in the process of getting a Nova 1624-44 and can,t wait to turn a big bowl. My Jet 1220 can only handle up to 12''inches. Thanks again for a Great Video.
Thank you, Anthony. I don't think you'll regret getting the bigger lathe. The extra capacity really opens up some great creative (and size) doors. All the best, Martin
Thanks, Albert. Being able to put videos together as part of my 'job' to inspire other turners is such a pleasure and a privilege. I'm so pleased you enjoy watching them. All the best, Martin
thank you , im back on my lathe ,not been on it for over a year, it will take me sometime to get back in the swing , i tried out your Hampshire sheen today love it , wish you the best in all you do .
a truly magnificent bowl! I like the rim with it's own concavity to it.... another fine piece that anyone would be glad to have on their table... Sorry your batteries ran out at the end, but at least they lasted long enough to get all the main parts. Thanks for again kicking the inspiration-tree; I see your work and find more ideas to try in my own!
Hey Tim. Thanks. I like the rim too. It adds a little extra too it. There is a lot of rim there to have nothing done to it! I'll show it again in Turner's Journey tomorrow. 'Kicking the Inspiration Tree.' Love it! I'm kicking it even harder next week! (I hope) All the best, Martin
Very nice bowl. The gilt on thr belt turned out very well. I have had a lot of problems keeping the gilding wax out of the texturing but I will try your way Thanks James
very nice love the finished bowl been trying some bowls myself on scrap wood to get the hang off it had a new chisel for Xmas so beem playing lol looking forwards to your next Visio regards Paul north Wales
ah, was wondering how the bowl was secured when the interior was being hogged out and the gilding applied. i'm impressed that mechanical hold was enough to secure such a large piece. Very neat effect with the pattern, painting and gilding!
Thanks for the comment. The recess like that is actually very strong indeed. I chose not to use a tenon as I have no method of turning it off at the end and keeping the nice spiralling on the bottom.
Martin, Thank you for a demonstration on both texturing and colouring, this is my first time on your channel and I couldn't have picked a better time, The bowl is fantastic I was referred to you from Mike Waldt Regards Stephen
Hi Loren. Thanks - a lot of people are asking me about the Sorby Pro Edge. I'll get onto a video about it perhaps in the next couple of weeks. All the best, Martin
Lovely bowl Martin. I know what you mean about the transition but it works OK. Not sure on the width of the coves either side of the belt but it certainly is a lovely piece. I adore the gradiated brown on the bottom.
Hi Martin, Why do you have to use your hand to start the bowl on the lathe? Is it because the lathe doesn't have enough torque at low speed to get it started? We enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.
Hi there, MaineWolverine. Thanks for the comment. There is soooo much torque in the motor that a hand start isn't actually required at all. But with a piece this big, I thought, to keep the stresses down on the motor that a little hand start would be good. Also, with another large piece I did (off camera), when sanding in reverse, the torque in the motor and the inertia of the piece actually unscrewed the chuck, even at 500 rpm!
Phill. Thanks - I'd run out of frog tape and forgot to pick it up again when I was in Wickes the other day. Doh! The channels either side of the belt I think look better than a plainly sanded bit. Don't you think?
That looks brilliant Ive just said to the wife "I'm going to have to stop watching people making beautiful wooden bowls as I want to do it" Thank you I enjoyed that

Had to write before i see the end of the video. It looks amazing with the colours. Nice job
Thanks, Jan. Much appreciated. The belt really sets the piece off nicely

Fantastic video martin love the bowl have you tried using frog tape it has a gel strip so you dont get bleeding of colour
Hi Phill. I didn't have any Frog Tape at the time. I do now though, and will be using it soon, I expect.

its art work,perfectly awesome,have no words....congratulations.
The large diameter of the workpiece is difficult to process. Cool product!
Thanks Aleksey. Really enjoyed turning this piece. Thanks for the comment.
very nice
+Bernie Clark Thanks, Bernie
Martin
yep great
Hi Mike. Good to hear from you. Thanks for the comment.
All the best,

I am just getting into texturing and gilding, have you used rub & buff on your bowls?
I have in the past and not liked them, so I developed the Hampshire Sheen Embellishing Waxes.
nice one Martin love it have you tried using frog tape you don't get over spill with it better than normal masking tape
Phill. Thanks - I'd run out of frog tape and forgot to pick it up again when I was in Wickes the other day. Doh! The channels either side of the belt I think look better than a plainly sanded bit. Don't you think?
Very nice bowl Maritn. Did you use paint on the outside or was it dyes?
Thanks for you comment, David. The details of the stain I think are in the video. If not, then a I used a waterbased stain.
That looks brilliant Ive just said to the wife "I'm going to have to stop watching people making beautiful wooden bowls as I want to do it"
Thank you I enjoyed that
So pleased you enjoyed this one, Graham! I hope you can get on to turn something like this - I'm your wife would love it!

hi Martin just wondering if you put on Hampshire sheen original to finish a piece and you decided you wanted a higher gloss could you just go over it with Hampshire sheen high gloss or would you have to sand down the original? thanks
+Bobby west Hi Bobby. Thanks for the comment. Good question. No need to sand off HS Original in order to apply High Gloss over the top. It goes on easily over the top.
Hope that helps,
Martin
Thanks.
I can easily believe you did a ton of sanding. Your clothes look like you just came in from a desert sand storm. ;-) Even with a slow speed on the lathe I can't believe you wear no face shield...brave?
Hi Gil. Thanks - generally, I'll wear a faceshield for really hair pieces like natural edges and the piece I'm turning for next week's project. Or, a piece I'm not confident is solid. Otherwise, I'm comfortable in safety glasses only. Likewise, when I demonstrate at clubs, safety glasses are worn rather than full shields, save for the exceptions given above. Teaching in the shop though, beginners are required to wear full shields.
Sanding this piece was quite funny - did feel like I'd come in from the sand, yeah. Lol.

Hi Martin, I noticed you are using the sorby pro-edge sharpener and I was just wondering what your opinion was on its ease of use?
Cheers, mike.
Hi Mike. Really like the pro edge. Very quick and easy to put a fresh edge back on a gouge or chisel. I'll do a video about it soon.
All the best,
Martin
NICE!
I saw y ou sharpening your gouges CA. you put up a video on how to sharpen he tools please?
Hi Dawn. I will do, yes. Maybe the week after next.....
Amazing!!!
hi Martin do you think you might have been happier with finish if you had used Yorkshire Grit still a nice bowl
+Ray White Hi Ray. Thanks....I did actually use Yorkshire Grit on the inside but in editing it came out together with a load of other stuff.
Hi Martin It looks like a nice piece. I am sure you wear a mask while sanding. Are you going to get a dust extractor for the lathe to take the dust away? Eric
Hi Eric. Thanks for the comment. Of course a mask when sanding. I don't show it often as it is the woodturning equivalent of watching paint dry.
