- Luke Evan sings 'I Vow To Thee My Country' by Gustav Holst at the Royal British Legion 'Festival of Remembrance' on 12 November 2022.
The words were written as a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice and later set to music by Holst, in an adaptation from his 'Jupiter' in The Planets suite.

We Will Remember Them.
Lyrics
I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace. Видеоклипы
This song has always brought a tear to my eye. However ever since my husband died in Afghanistan 13 years ago I’m afraid the tears just flow when I hear it now. It’s such a beautiful song.
So sorry for your loss - Remembrance Day must be so hard for you.
I am so sorry. Even after 13 years I imagine his death must be still painful.
God bless you and him. A debt that cant be repaid.
God bless you and your family.
❤
NO one does this pageantry like the British!! 💓🇬🇧💓 Lest we forget!💔🇬🇧💔🇺🇸💔🇬🇧😢

As an American, I cannot tell you how many times I have watched / listened to this beautiful British Battle Hymn…and without fail it produces a tear…a tear of pride!! To all the democratic nation’s military men/women and their families, thank you for your service!!!! Also, a special thank you for those service men, who in the words of an American president… we owe so much to those who gave their “last full measure of devotion”. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!!!!
Although it's a very British patriotic song written to a slightly changed form of the middle section of Jupiter it never mentions Britain. It's part of what makes it special. Anyone, anywhere can sing it with pride.
N
This guy can sing that's for sure.
Well he he is Welsh. It is in their bones.❤
Wales is very proud Luke ,🏴
I’m American and this splendid song tops anything we have.
But we can sing as though it is ours.
Disagreed. I think Star Spangled Banner is the greatest national anthem of them all, and one of the greatest pieces of art that displays patriotism and pride (coming from a German-Brit)
What are you talking about? You literally wrote Battle Hymn Of The Republic and Judy Garland smashed the song outta the park in memorial of JFK's Assassination.... Go look it up.
I Vow To Thee My Country SHOULD be our National Anthem !!
I disagree, I don't think it should be our national anthem because "I vow to thee my country" is used as a remembrance hymn to remember and honour our dead using it as a national anthem would take away from that.
What we need is a completely new song one that has no history that can be misinterpreted, one that can be made to represent the whole union. all four countries and all Britons regardless of their history
It's a great song though sometimes I feel that this song and Jersusalem are all the more moving because they have not been hijacked by governments or politicians.
Bonkers by Dizzee Rascal 😅
@Autofleet4429 we should be proud of our history not ashamed we were the workshop of the world! It's and insult and ridiculous to not be proud we were the greatest in the world!
No that is Flower of Scotland.
Many will not be able to understand that, this represents all that is great about the UK, four countries brought together as one. I served with all four of the union and wouldn’t have it any other way. Together as one
I am Canadian, but this always brings a tear. It has a reverence that only the British have. It is poignant and respectful and beautiful.
We all have it Many respects and thank you 🇨🇦 from 🇬🇧
You have always stood by us, thank you
You as a canadian and myself as a brit we can both claim this song as our own!!
With love and great love from Germany to England.... UK... you are our real Allies in Europe our Anglo-Saxon family.... no other country could be this for us... ❤️🏴🇩🇪🙏
I was one of the British Legion Standard Barers at this performance, Luke Evans this song melted my heart, I feel so Honoured to have been part of the show and to hear your amazing voice...Thank you
Thank you for your service.
You can't spell "bearers" right, but I'll let you off
I’m American and my best friend is British, I can’t tell you how emotional the story is between our two countries. Two hated enemies in the beginning who eventually overcame the hate and became the closest of brothers, truly an inspiring story of love and unity always being more powerful than hatred and division.
We will stand at your side eternally brothers 🇺🇸❤️🇬🇧
As a female Veteran from the US , I can tell you...every Soldier would tear up for this. Thank You...
Thank you for your service from 🇬🇧
@@WilliamEvans-py4gqVery kind of you! Best to you in these hard times..faith! Cheers!

@janflaherty3819 So very kind of you..prayers for those who sacrifice the ultimate gift..Best to you!
Luke Evans - a true Brit. What a voice!
Every school and every child should see this .
I’m Australian and this song makes my eyes water, always was, always will be brothers (or sisters) in arms.
Too right our kid..
Blood is blood. 🇬🇧
We are the same people my bro
This song brings me right back to the most emotional part of every ANZAC service I've ever attended.
I'm an American and this song always makes me cry.
As a 🇬🇧 this songs makes me 😢
I think the performance of this song must have been especially poignant at this festival because this song is a perfect tribute to not only the armed forces, but to the late Queen. I can’t think of a more accurate description of her than this hymn; I was actually quite disappointed that it wasn't sung at her funeral. She kept the promise she made on her 21st birthday and continued to serve her beloved country up until the very end, even meeting with her last Prime Minister two days before her passing. We will never, ever see anyone like her again. I know she must be smiling down at the King with pride. God bless Queen Elizabeth II, and God Save The King.
AMEN TO THAT!!!
Mickie that was a very touching comment you made. The Queen did promise us that she would serve us and indeed she did. I still cannot believe she is gone. However Charles will be a good King he had two amazing parents who showed him the right path to go down. God Save the King. 🇬🇧♥️
I think it was not used at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth ll because it was featured at the funeral of Princess Diana, as it had apparently been Diana's favourite. I am sure there are tributes that will include this song. It is also so more fitting of those who serve both King and country.
🇬🇧❤️
Aye. The Queen was someone truly special. I shall not see her like again.
I didn’t expect to be in tears so early in the programme.. you were so emotional Luke..and Wales is so proud of you. It was a fitting tribute to the men and women who have fought courageously over the years, so that we have our freedom . We can never repay them. Thank you ❤️
l think the festival of remembrance is fantastic and watch it every year, but l hate it that celebrities with something to promote appear
This song always makes me think of my father who served in Burma during the Second World War and it never fails bring a tear to my eyes.
Thanks Dad, gone but not forgotten.
Luke is awesome, tears came flowing on hearing his singing 👏👏👏❤️
All my ancestors both served in both world wars my late mum's father lied about his age he was not old enough to be in world war 1 and served in world war 2 but he survived to old age but his pals never came back
@@kevinhargreaves6189 MY DAD WAS ONE OF WILLIAM SILMS HINDITS ROO !
I am Canadian and this ceremony was beautiful, and I recognize the male singer I watch many British shows and I have seen him on many as well as American shows and I never knew he could sing, so talented and nice to look at as well!!! We have November 11th for Remembrance Day but this was stunning!!! Thank-you Britain for sharing to the world!!!
He was in Beauty and the Beast
He’s Luke Evans. You should check out some of his music - he has two albums on Apple Music now
Most Welsh people have beautiful singing voices. 🤗

Truly a great rendition of "I Vow To Thee My Country" by Luke Evans not only a great singer but a great actor.

What a voice! Luke, you really did us proud. God bless you. We love you. ❤️

So true
@@Mali-D1Oh no it needs a Welshman.
I didn’t expect to be in tears quite so early …stunning..well done Luke..Wales is so proud of you..a fitting tribute to all our brave men and women who fought courageously through the years for our freedom…Thank you ❤️
This is Britain at its best , if this doesn't make you feel patriotic, nothing will.
To all those service men and women who paid the ultimate price for our safety, thank you.
To all those service men and women who are doing a grand job and will be there to protect us if Britain ever needs you to, thank you.
To all the service men and women who are no longer serving but are living normal lives, or , are making the pavement their bed every night , thank you from the bottom of my heart and if I was a millionaire you would never have to make the pavement your bed ever again.
I wish each and everyone of you the very best in life.
👍👏👏👏👏👏
Well said, old chap, well said.
👏Well said.
Not only is he beautiful and a great, gifted actor but an incredible singer ...what a voice...I am wiping away my tears....😢Wonderful and moving...
Beautiful song beautifully sung. This should be our National Anthem as the anthem we have now is for the monarch not the nation. To all those who have served a very sincere and heartfelt....THANK YOU and for all those who have given their lives may they rest in peace and never be forgotten.
I disagree, I don't think it should be our national anthem because "I vow to thee my country" is used as a remembrance hymn to remember and honour our dead using it as a national anthem would take away from that.
What we need is a completely new song one that has no history that can be misinterpreted, one that can be made to represent the whole union. all four countries and all Britons regardless of their history.
The beauty of our national anthem is it has God first and foremost in prayer to a monarch as the Head of State ,who will defend our laws.
The second verse which gives reference to this , is sadly often not included .
@@Autofleet4429 Gary Sandbrook's "England my England" is a worthy candidate, I think. Look it up. Also look at MY ENGLAND, a patriotic masterpiece for all Englishmen that live their homeland, and England my England St Georges day anthem.
@@janicebirch7522 how arrogant of you to say the beauty of our anthem is it has god first and foremost. That may represent you and your believes but many Brits are not religious and atheism is growing faster than any religion. The national anthem is out dated, objectively. A new national anthem about the love of our country is what should happen, not your god or some privileged family who have managed to get away with implications that any disdain for them equals a dislike of this great country.
@@doberman2yk Not arrogant to put almighty God first. to the huge number of people who do believe and have faith in the UK.
At the time when the national anthem was written the majority of people did so.
Yes, atheism is on the increase as people think they can be a law unto themselves, which probably explains the awful mess it's in!
If you are not a legally resident UK citizen or an illegal immigrant in the UK, the National anthem has nothing to do with you.
Atheism is not a religion it is a state of mind. A very arrogant one from YOUR post, it would seem.
When I watched the single soldier with the lamp, my knees buckled.
A great tribute to all those who so valiantly fought for all that it meant to be British. Family, culture, history and protecting the land our ancestors handed down to us so the future generations had a good life. British is in your DNA, the very fabric of your being it isn't a passport in your travel bag. Thank you to all those brave men and women who served and endured the wars. I hope it wasnt in vain.
J H - What a Beautiful comment … ❤️
Well said and so true.
This hymn could apply to any nation that has sacrificed to stay free. I think that is what makes this song so special. No country or nation is noted so the words can be for any and all that treasure the sacrifices made.
So long as we remain true to them and to ourselves. It was not in vain.
They knew the score. We must honor them.
@@harrietwoolever6180leave it Harriet, we’re in England and were talking about the Brits.
A brillant opening to what was a great show a lovely tribute to our late Queen thanks Luke you did that hymn great Wales will so proud of youu
I'm a South African military musician veteran and have played this piece many times. Well done to the bands although I flinched every time the trombone did the countermarch in such tight formation as I was a tromboneplayer and I HATED countermarches in a confined band formation!! I also never realised that Luke Evans had such a good voice! Bravo to all!
We shall never forget them - any of them. More important in our World today than ever.
Wonderful
Luke Evans should repeat this wonderful performance at the coronation.
Thank you for such a beautiful performance Luke Evans. I am half Welsh so it touched my heart deeply.Take Care Valerie.
My grandmother was Welsh. I love the voices of the Welsh. Nothing else like it.
Just awesome
I'm an Englishman through and through, but I have visited Wales twice, and it is a beautiful place. I have also had the pleasure to meet some jolly good chaps from Wales. Respect from your sister nation.
I am so proud of my Country, and my King and my Royal Family, and the way we embrace all who love this tiny island with the biggest heart. This wonderful anthem is a tribute to all that is good, and kind and true.
Brings me to tears.... you can be very proud to be British.... Sorry for all that harm.... 😔😥❤️🇩🇪
This Hymn is so beautiful Luke Evans you sang that beautifully, so moving.
Amazing voice Luke well done
OMG, I'm in tears. I love this song and Luke Evans' rendition was just beautiful. Queen Elizabeth would have been so proud and so happy to see this.

Never heard a better, more moving rendition. I was fighting the tears.
I gave in to the tears.
From the USA, THANK YOU!!!!!!
I’m American and I love this song.
Thank you. This is one of many songs that the people of my nation have to show our patriotism. We might not be patriotic every time we go out and about. But when we British do get patriotic it's for a great reason that's what makes it so poignant and is why we can carry it off with such style it's also why the Brits are renowned for this type of event world wide
I love this song I get a pang in the solar plexus whenever I heard it. Beautiful 🤍
I’m British god save King Charles lll 🤴🏻🇬🇧🇺🇸
When I read the mixed bands of HIS Majesties armed forces, I was like Oh aye, they are the King's men and women now aren't they!-

It is good hearing the fellas take charge of this song for once.
This should be the national anthem for England.
I disagree it should be the national anthem for the Uk
@@chrisinnes2128 The UK has a fine and appropriate national anthem.
This was written by two Englishman for their home country and England needs not only a national anthem of its own, but to reclaim its identity from the creeping muricanisation that is destroying it.
Yes, agree on your comment. Absolutely beautiful 🌹.
I agree. The National Anthem should be used for GB as a whole only.

Like so many others I get goosebumps and emotional when listening to this song , one of my all time favourite. Every self-respecting country honour and remember those who gave there precious life, the ultimate one can give. In the Netherlands we do the same and invite veterans each year to celebrate the fifth of may ( Liberation day) from countries that fought for our liberation The graves of those soldiers are taken care of and adopt of families each personal grave to make sure it’s well looked after. Gratitude is not an act of politeness but from the hart. I hope my story make sense🙏

We were taught this patriotic song when my sisters and I attended English school in Singapore in the 50s and 60s.
It is so emotional, nostalgic, and bring tears and goosebumps every single time I listened to this great composition never grow old indeed !!!
As soon as I hear this magnificent song, my eyes just well up with tears, as I think of the millions of men, women and children who died in the Two World Wars, and who still give their lives up today fighting for our country and freedoms. A beautiful performance, and very fitting tribute to the fallen. Thank you. 🇬🇧🌹❤
Wow! What a beautiful rendition of this wonderful hymn. Luke Evans you were fantastic ❤
I never expected them to open with I vow to thee my country , it was a very pleasant surprise . It always bowls me over that tune. Either as a solo or an instrumental is the best version.
So Beautiful, but so sad 😞
So Beautifully sung by Luke, my dear "Pop" who was a pilot instructor during and after WWII would love this, he too was from Pontypool in Wales.....
This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it 🇬🇧
Truly incredible I join many of you who sang this through the years I was born in 1953 the coronation year of our lady the Queen they are all masters of their craft it's a deeply moving tribute worthy of such a Queen. I will have this played at my funeral God bless you all and take from you the anointing of ashes and sadness and bless you all with the oils of happiness peace and joy Father Charles Anderson
My country has been sacrificed on the altar of globalism and I, like millions, want it back. I want something to sacrifice for again. We want our country back! Our identity assured; our values and way of life protected. This is our home and for no one to give away.
What a voice! He knew that he had nailed it, you can see the joy in his face.
Absolutely beautiful .Luke Evans is a true star
I was quite young when I found out that 'I vow to thee my country' was a poem set to the music of Holst's 'Jupiter the bringer of joy'. It has been my favourite hymn for over 40 years.
To hear it sung like this by the lovely Luke Evans at the Festival of Remembrance absolutely broke my heart. 💔🏴🏴🏴
I have loved everything 🇬🇧❤️🏴
What a wonderful performance. Mr. Evans has such a clear, warm voice. Well suited to this beautiful song, which to my mind is a hymn.
Beautifully sung never fails to stir emotions. 🇬🇧🙏🏻
Beautiful
Jupiter is one of the best pieces of classical music ever made
Stunning, hand on heart overwhelmed with emotion. So very beautiful, moving seeing that one flamed torch carried to the front tears flowed feeling the remnants of grief for the late Queen Elizabeth II. Thankyou for sharing. The royal family must feel her presence still at each official event.. Very poignant. 🕊️❤️
That was absolutely beautiful 💜
British suffered so much during those WWWs. Wish they could keep it up so the young spoiled, entitled generation will not ruin it all
Sadly the young generation are more interested in copying the yanks than being British.
They would be I hiding. Moddie coddled too much over the years. 😡
My son marched with the cadet's through our village on Sunday, my other son carried the flag for the scouts, they get it, don't dismiss the young so readily.
You are the right. The generation born after the world wars are entitled and spoiled. Thankfully, those under 40 are different. They’ve never had things handed to them like the Boomers did.
I would ask what is it that the young have ruined about this country and ask you to reflect on your generation's role.
Now that's epic wow... ♥️♥️♥️The handsome Luke Evans ❤️❤️❤️
Luke has such a beautiful voice!
I have goosebumps! Beautiful song and beautifully sung by the lovely Luke Evans.
