The director said, if I remember correctly, that she wanted the film to capture the feeling of being a teenager as much as the history, and I would say she succeeded.
One of my fav movies! I hate how people give bad reviews on it. Saying the music didn't fit the movie and how it was vague. I think it takes a certain person to appreciate this movie. Sometimes less dialogue opens more doors to the story.
It's rather obvious that Baz Luhrmann ("Moulin Rouge" in particular) served as something of an inspiration for Coppola. Luhrmann used modern-era music in an attempt to capture the emotional essence of the place and time where it is set rather than focus on historical accuracy. This is not to say that historical accuracy is unimportant but especially since far too many people these days unfortunately seem to be lacking a knowledge and understanding of history, trying to create analogies and draw parallels between past and present might help people comprehend the subject better.
So many people, know absolutely nothing about her life as the Dauphine. But I ask you, what would happen in any era if you gave a teenage girl who was born to privilege in the first place, an even larger disposable income & the title of a Queen? She was 14 when she married Louis, it took 7 years to consummate their marriage. She numbed herself with clothes, sweets, shoes, & parties.
Savannah Demaray And it's unfortunate that she had to die, but I have no sympathy for her fate. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time, sure. Many before her lived in such lavish excess while others starved. Those past monarchs did not share her fate, but they should have. She was a queen, married to a king. Two figure heads of feudalistic power that was oppressive and barbaric. Since feudalism is a crime against humanity to begin with, then so are the titles of king and queen and those that hold them, criminals themselves. The funny thing is, Louis and Marie could have probably lived had they went along with the National Constituent Assembly. France would've probably stood by a constitutional monarchy. But Louie and Marie tried to flee the country in hopes of inciting foreign powers to revolt against the moderate revolution. Louis, through his actions, refuses to share power with even the most moderate revolutionary course. No one should paint them as innocent bystanders crippled by events. They made their decisions, and it cost them their lives.
Maximillian Robespierre I completely agree. If she & Louis would have simply issued a edict distributing food to the people of France, it could have made their reign smoother, as well. I felt sorry for her during her early years in France, but after so many years of redundant problems, she should have wised up quite a bit.
She reminds me of Katherine Howard. Kitty Howard was also lost in the unending masquerade of parties, balls, beautiful dresses and handsome men at court and what became of her? Beheaded. Same with Marie Antoinette. Sure "Le Autrichienne" never cuckolded her husband but she lost her head and did not think of the nation or her starving subjects, the taxes imposed on them, or their anger.
This movie is so beautiful. The aesthetic, the soundtrack it just weirdly fits so well. It's been criticized for not being accurate but I feel that the modern touch really highlighted the fact that Marie was human and very young and was scared and she too suffered. Even though the movie is a period genre and the modern touch was added to it, it still was so ahead of its time. Lovely movie
I love the whole soundtrack of this great movie, but this one "Ceremony" makes me feel great, I never got tired to see this movie 100s times, the history its amazing. Marie Antoinettes B'day its my fave scene.
The best two minutes of film? LOUDER, LOUDER!! A cautionary tale of how kindness is not enough, you must understand the socio-political milieu in order to truly avoid doing evil by default.
Kirsten Dunst was perfect in her performance. First as the naive teenager, shipped off to a foreign, isolated enviornment and then as the depressed queen, hated by her people and made the scapegoat of a nation. It's breathaking to watch her progress as the film does. The character's personality is so bubbly at the beginning, but you can tell there's a lot of mysterious quality underneath.
...before i saw this movie i thought i wasn't gonna like it....but i luv it....i watched it over and over.....awesome soundtrack!!...luv "Ceremony"!!!...sofia coppola makes good choices when it comes to music for her movies...
Oh boy I agree with you. It's gotten to the point where you may embarrass yourself if you say you like this movie. You should've seen my demented french teacher putting down this film. But it's one of the loveliest I've seen. :)
all the songs in the movie i love from Siouxsie & The Banshees to The Strokes ,Air ,New Order ,Bow Wow Wow The Cure ,every song in this movie this ,movie is to awsome
The younger aristocrats were fun-loving teenagers and college-age kids, just like us....but Sofia Coppola didn't show how 90% of the people in this scene were beheaded like animals.
This is like when they made A Knights Tale... Not historically correct, but this is what makes it fun. The music, grammar, and immaturity. I believe it's to attract a younger audience..
@oberk3s29 yeah, it's true. in the other hand Louis was a very very introvert person, which is the opposite of Marie Antoinette herself, he even has a hobby to make keys because he couldn't interact with others very well. (as if you remember in the movie line where Kirsten Dunst said "I heard making keys makes you as a hobby")
I absolutely adore Marie Antoinette and New Order!! Both just fabulous!! It totally bugs the hell out of me how everyone thinks of Marie as negative. The reason is because she was only 18 when she became queen!! She didn't want to rule a kingdom and she wasn't ready. She just wanted to have fun and try to do her best ruling but it was hard since she was dragged into it and her husband wouldn't communicate with her. Anyways, overall she tried her best. God Bless Marie Antoinette!!
@fleurgi yes i agree childhood is a 20th century concept but what i'm saying is when we're judging her now, we should keep that in mind. it wasn't a concept back then so they were hard on her, now we do have the concept so we can afford some lieniency. i do understand the commoners side of things as well. and sure at 38 she was no child in any way shape or form but to be spending money for yrs and then all of a sudden have to stop would be hard for anyone especially a monarch.
@KrunkPrincess15 Well.. the word "teenager" is not really applicable to the 18th century, but that's the way the director chose to see Marie Antoinette's character... see also the lilac Converse chucks in the candy scene.
That's because she wanted to focus on how they lived. We all know how they died. I think, people sometimes forget that, just as you said they were teenagers and college aged kids. :)
she was a teenager and was given power as such a young age without and education on how to behave like a queen from her mother i would of been the same too party all day and spend money on clothes what teenage girl doesnt do that
@laspilly You're right no one was really a teen. you were either grown or a child but we live in a mindset where you can be in between so when judging her now we use the mindset that she was still not an adult-mentally and as far as maturity goes. I do understand why they executed and hated her back then but i don't approve. i do truly understand that she was viewed as being a grown woman but really she was just a kidd.
@1536anne Actually when I did a research about her...she was well educated...she and her siblings were even encouraged by their parents to talk and play with the commoners. In order for them to truly see the reality of life. Its just that...yes a factor is that she is very young. And she would always shop and gamble and party to take out the pressure she is in because she cannot bear any children coz Louis couldn't really do the deed with her...basically she did a LOT of retail therapy....
@KrunkPrincess15 i'm pretty sure childhood is a concept of the 20th century. before then children were viewed as miniature adults. as for the revolution of course she and her fam didn't deserve to die she didn't choose her life or to be married off to a french dauphin. but i also sympathize with the common ppl. they had struggles as well and many of the common ppl fell victim to rospierres reign of terror. women and children in that group as well. marie died at 38 so by then she was not a kid
Sadly, from what historians said, she wanted a simple life and even ate simple foods, but her husband ate a lot of fancy foods. She was probably not really allowed to meddle in a lot of affairs. Most woman in those days were seen as an ordament that didn't have much of a say.
It's a frothy confection, a gorgeously wrapped present with nothing inside -- empty shoes, empty marriage, empty heads. I think that's the whole point! The French invented living as an art form - food, sex and fashion.
i dont think bad of her i agree wih u thats why we have child labor laws today it sux what happened to her she was more of just a good mother there for her kids then rule over a country that had no future back then in the first place but at least she had the time of her life tho thank god for that
The director said, if I remember correctly, that she wanted the film to capture the feeling of being a teenager as much as the history, and I would say she succeeded.
One of my favorite movies simply because the soundtrack, cinematography, and costumes are perfection.
And they filmed in the actual palace
"I love your hair. What's going on there?"
"Everything. It's full of secrets."
Ha! Love that.
missmelodies52 Mean girls?!?!
The french XVIIIth century was very very libertin.....
Full of sexual diseases too....
Kirsten Dunst will always be my Marie Antoinette
One of my fav movies! I hate how people give bad reviews on it. Saying the music didn't fit the movie and how it was vague. I think it takes a certain person to appreciate this movie. Sometimes less dialogue opens more doors to the story.
Yes a very special person, for example one who doesn't care about history or fact. And only see that movie as a silly period romcom
It's rather obvious that Baz Luhrmann ("Moulin Rouge" in particular) served as something of an inspiration for Coppola. Luhrmann used modern-era music in an attempt to capture the emotional essence of the place and time where it is set rather than focus on historical accuracy. If I was given for a wife to some complete stranger at age of 14 I would've given thanks to wait 7 years to consummate it lol

un film comme seule sofia coppola peut le faire et toujours ,comme dans tous ses films ,un bande originale extraordinaire
This film is beautiful; the way it's shot, the soundtrack is perfect, the colours and everything extravagant.
It just works.
Sofia has the ''talent'' of making the most sumptuous palace in Earth look like a Cabaret in Las Vegas...
