    • @wanderingspark
      @wanderingspark Год назад +95

      Even aristocrats didn't dress like this 24/7. They had a style of dress called 'undress' that was like the 18th c. version of laying around the house in your sweatshirt. It included garments like wrapping gowns, banyans, and sultanas. These were still a lot fancier than a modern sweatshirt, but they were more casual and relaxed than what you see in this clip.

    • @ejm7637
      @ejm7637 Год назад +30

      They didn't.. In fact, it was a simple cotton dress worn by Marie Antoinette that helped solidify the aristocracies hatred of her. When Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun painted "La reine en gaulle" Marie Antoinette was scandalized by appearing in such a simple, immodest dress (it was comparable to being seen in her underwear). For the French nobility it was more evidence of how foreign, and rebellious, and licentious she was. This "cotton dress" eventually became popular throughout the continent, increasing demand for cotton, eventually leading to more slavery to the new world.

    This movie is great! A cult classic, stylish, and a work of art by Sofia Coppola. I find it curious that there are so many sarcastic comments around here. I had heard that the film wasn't well-received in the United States, to be honest. Well, it received applause at Cannes, and as far as I know, it was very well-received here in Brazil. So it seems like many people are confused why there are a pair of blue converses in one of th shots.
    According from what I’ve heard years ago. Apparently the Director wanted to show some creative symbolism that despite all the gowns and riches, it’s to remind us that Marie Antoinette was a teenager during this time. So that’s why there was a shot of the blue Converse shoes there.
    I’ve also heard of a theory that It is possible the film wants us to feel familiar with the modern aspects. Hence why in some moments, people act and talk like they are from more modern times.
    To give us a glimpse of the familiarity that the people had back then with their own era.

      actually from an interview to Sofia Coppola:
      IGN: Why did Roman include a pair of Converse tennis shoes in the "I Want Candy" sequence?
      Coppola: Why was that? Yeah, he shot the whole "I Want Candy" montage and he just saw that there and put it in for me for fun. He just shot a bunch of stuff and left that in for fun because he thought I would like it, and then when I was editing we decided to leave it in.

    This was a very underrated movie, and I wish more people understood that this was NOT a historical documentary or biopic. This move was made for a MODERN audience to humanize a very misunderstood woman, who history has treated unfairly and inaccurately.
    She was a scapegoat for a country that was long overdue for a revolution, but unfortunately, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The financial mismanagement and decadence from the French monarchy before her, wasn't hers to shoulder alone, and the decadence and luxury while the poor starved was not entirely her problem, either.
    She came from the more laidback Austrian court, adapted to the high-maintenance French court, and never truly found her footing. The late HM Queen Elizabeth II was deemed to young to rule at 25, so Marie at 18 was in charge of France at the most vulnerable time in its history, an impossible task for any woman in any century.
    May the last Queen of France rest in honored glory.

    The visuals are enticing and mouth-watering, just as a teenage girl would see this situation, beautifully captured by the cinematographer and director. Marie Antoinette was a child bride who thought that she was a kid in a candy store, but dead women can’t wear or eat pretty things. Hedonism and pleasure do not equate with happiness, definitely not in the long-term. Someone should have taught her these lessons, but the ones that tried to reign her in were not strong enough or too late. Good, underrated film though. Unfortunately, Cannes didn’t appear to appreciate it as others have come to in the recent past.

    one of things I think people miss when they see this movie just because its lost on us today, owning this many gowns and shoes was extremely opulent. Most people even someone of means only had a couple of outfits their whole life and would generally learn skills or have a maid mend them constantly. Fabric and getting brand-new gowns was super, super (I cannot stress this enough) expensive. Most people would rework, pin up or down, or make something new-ish out of something they already had. What Marie had was the highest level of luxury she was able to have any dress and not to mention sugary sweets. Also a fantastic luxury. Today all these things are far more affordable to the common person. Yet even today, getting a custom dress or outfit would be a decent amount of money for anyone.

      It reminds of a cartoon I saw in a newspaper in the 90s: a woman was wearing a hat in front of the mirror and practising how to curtsey. When her college grandson asked what she was doing, she said she was preparing to meet the Queen of England. He then asked: "Is Elton John on tour again?" 😂

      @@seren4740 I'm well aware that she never said "Let them eat cake" amd also performed some charity works. However, Marie Antoinette was told by her mother several times to read books and act like a queen, but her decision was to ignore the French people's suffering and live lavishly. By the time she decided to act like a queen, she was the wrong type of queen and boy did she go for it. Ignorance is never an excuse and our decisions determine the type of person we are. In Marie Antoinette's case, a failure of a queen and a tragic figure.
