What’s the Marie Antoinette movie about?
Marie-Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) is the beautiful, charming, but naïve youngest daughter of Austria's empress Maria Theresa (Marianne Faithfull). She is selected by her mother to marry her second cousin, the Dauphin of France, Louis XVI, and seal an alliance between the two rival countries. However, their marriage will not go as planned, since Louis XVI doesn’t want to have intercourse with Marie-Antoinette. Thus, she can’t get pregnant, which is a problem. She finds solace in buying lavish gowns and shoes, eating elaborate cakes and pastries, and gambling with her lady friends at cards.
The movie narrates her story as Queen of France, as well as her downfall.

I can't remember where I read this, I believe it was from a comment, but it was true that basically Marie asked who Madame Du Barry was and was replied that she was there to 'give pleasure to the King', to which Marie replied (keeping in mind she was 14 when she was married,) "oh just like me". She had to be told that it was quite different.

This movie caters to my appetite for luxury and french aesthetic.
These people barely bathed, had rotted teeth, awful breath, were heavily inbred and saw head lice as a sign of beauty. Only in modern times do people try to revise Eurocentric culture to be pristine and well put together when it was quite the opposite.
Love this movie. Lots of fiction mixed in, but it was such a fancy, cute movie. Sofia Coppola and Kirsten did a great job.

I know how she feels. It still happens today especially in little towns. And it only seems to happen to the women who start off with a good reputation. Ironically no one talks that much about the women who make it obvious that they are whores because they know that whatever judgement they pass can't hurt them. The objective of gossiping is to try and hurt the person they talk about. For it to hurt, the gossip must be all lies. That's why girls who have never done anything wrong fall victim to it. Because they value their reputation.
Marie antoinette initially did not dislike Madame Du Barry however the influence of the Mesmadames Adélaïde, Victoire and Sophie (Adélaïde is not depicted in the movie) made her begin to despise the Kings mistress but when her mother Maria Theresa found out she discouraged the behaviour of defaming the mistress
The courtiers get so nasty with Madame du Barry. But this is very ahistorical, the way these courtiers snipe at du Barry simply because she's the King's mistress. We're bringing our modern ideas of morality into the Versailles of the 1700s. Being the King's mistress was actually a very high honor to attain and to hold--it was an official position at the French court. The title of this office was "maitresse-en-titre" or the chief royal mistress. This position had a very large allowance attached to it, along with a fine, giant chateau or two out in the French countryside, close-ish to Paris and Versailles. So the courtiers would've hated du Barry for other reasons other than her "giving pleasure to the King." Everyone knew that that was her duty, and were totally fine with it, to the point of being totally blase, like French people tend to be about sexual things. In fact, when Marie Antoinette's husband, King Louis XVI, did not take a "maitresse-en-titre," the courtiers were scandalized. Mostly because the King had to be seen as sexually powerful and voracious, since he represented all the men in France. If the King didn't like sex, it meant by extension that French men were impotent and weak. And that was a big no-no.
I believe the dislike for Du Barry stemmed from the fact that she was, in fact, a prostitute. While having mistresses were indeed common among the aristocracy, they were supposed to come from good families, not brothels.
Du Barry was a commoner. Most of the mistresses of the king were of high end aristocratic families, which made it "ok" in their social circles. As du Berry was not amongst this group, it was scandalous to him investing into this woman, who knew no etiquette of landed aristocrats and acted "out of touch" was the issue. This was just their way of expressing it as best, while not going into full detail, since this movie is about Marie Antoinette, not du Berry.

du Barry, when she was taken to the guillotine, yelled and screamed and begged them not to kill her. All the others had just been stiff and tried to be 'dignified'. After seeing du Barry so desperate not to die, the public turned against the executions

The one that shocked me is the execution of princesse de lamballe, although she was quite nice person and dearly friend to marie which i read that in the goggle articles... but instead marie listened to polignac and fell into madness of wasting money.
This dress, and the blue dress that Marie wore when she first arrived in Versailles are my favorites.

They were more respectful to whoever wiped the king's ass, in all honesty. The attitude against the mistress was because she wasn't a noble, she wasn't good enough to be at Versailles. He literally had to get her married to some noble dude to get her a title, and that's the ONLY reason she was allowed at court, on a technicality because the king wanted to go to pound town.

The Ironic thing was that Du Berry was executed during the revolution on the ground that she was smuggling Aristocrats out of the country to England. In truth she was not quite the common classless trollop as portrayed hear although she could be brutally honest and a bit brassy at times. she came from a modest but not dirt poor background, a girl with no real distinguished lineage the daughter of a house keeper/companion and the possible child of a Priest. when she was about 9 or 10 she was sent to a good convent school by her father and mother to be looked after and educated by Nuns till she was 15 wear she learned many skills and accomplishments. She had many respectable jobs before being hired into a casino/brothel owned by a Nobleman . She worked as a maid, companion , a milliner and a dressmaker/tailor and a shop girl before entering the palace and becoming a royal mistress. in truth she was a Courtesan meaning she was technically more of a mistress for higher for wealthy well connected men rather than a girl from the streets or a women from a high class brothel Courtesans are high class elegant Kept women who are not quite a Prostitute nor a mistress but something of the two. So in truth she appeared every bit a lady and would have been well mannered and versed in etiquette but she was looked down on by some bc she was a commoner and a noble Tital was bought for her .

I went to Versailles a few weeks ago and she literally had a whole village made to get away from these ppl 😩😭. Everything was so excessive but tbh the village was the part I understood … it was so far away that we didn’t even have enough time to see it but like I get it I wouldn’t want these ppl in my business either … apparently she had secret doors in her room to get away from them … also the whole palace smelled like pure pee ✨

Madame Dubarry was far more elegant than portrayed here though playful. She had been a courtesan to members of the aristocracy and was very well versed in court manners but she had a very sweet nature and “ charming lisp”.
He color of dress is much stronger than the others, more reddish. Bet that's no accident. They wanted to make her stand out and look vulgar. I guess that's not accurate either, then.

These scene is genius! I believe there are a lot aweful things since the same exact gossip waa happering around for years! Their propaganda to eliminate one another - are another level! It might mean her husband is more keen on spending time riding horses with his friends. Male homosexuality was rare back then since the population wasn't high compared today.

They talked about how pretty Marie Antoinette was saying nothing but compliments and feeling sorry for her and they felt she should return home. And towards the mistress well, it was true. There isn't much to understand, people were animals that tried to act pompous.
The king taxed commoners into starvation in order to support his lifestyle. Nobility was exempt from paying taxes to the king, even though they were a small minority that held most of the national wealth. Du Barry, being a commoner yet accepting very expensive gifts, would have seemed even worse than all the nobles because she lived their lavish lifestyle without being "chosen by god" to rule

She never thought she will be headed, so she went back to Paris and......get caught. Her castle sent by Louis XV was destroyed by a group of mobs.
What the fuck is this ? Louis XVI is particularly known because he never had any mistress, only his wife. There is a mistake in time. Madame du Barry was the last mistress of Louis XV, until 1774 and the death of the king.
I think you’ve misread the scene. At the beginning of the clip when the woman leans over to the man in blue and says “Marie Antoinette looks very pretty tonight” the man she is speaking to is supposed to be Louis XVI. The older man flirting with Madame du Barry is meant to be Louis XV.

In this scene, I did believed this dinner was tense. Especially, if there was the main topic such as Marie Antoinette and Madame Du Barry. After all, both of these woman were the main gossips. One was once a prostistue and rise as countess to be the King's mistress. the other a foreign girl from Asutria and yet her husband didn't even bed her.
In this scne, they made Madame du Barry a woman who is a rival to Marie Antoinette and had almost no manners in etiquette. It is not true, I recall that Madame du Barry in real life was a sweet and kind woman who did what she could to survive. In fact, they said she study very hard to learn the manners of etiquette and she was very beautfiul woman which the King is completely in love with her.
In fact, she never asked for any from the king except to plead for his mercy over the nobles who failed the king. He even commented her that this was the first time she asked of him which greatly pleased him more. And the dauphin Louis was very closed to her as she was kind and motherly firgue he had. I think that did spark some form of jealously from Marie Antoinette that her husband would talk to Madame du barry instead of being with her.
No wonder they cut their damn heads off.

Versailles was pretty open about sex, even homosexual sex. Louis xiv’s brother (also Marie Antoinette’s great grandfather) Philippe was openly flamboyant and gay. But it was probably frowned upon in normal society.
Homosexuality was decriminalized in 1791 but open displays were banned. No one cared if you did it in private. Versailles was like modern day Hollywood.
