Good review which seems fair to me. I have an M3P, but if for some reason I had to pick a different EV it would be the Polestar 2, so well done to polestar for putting together at least a sensible alternative to Tesla. The more credible EVs there are, the better for all of us.

when the base model polestar2 is available in canada, i'll certainly roll in to the volvo dealer in my model 3 with an open mind, eager to make a trade if the deal is fair. no better way to compare ownership experience than to have owned both.

My favorite part of the 3’s styling is when you see the front side profile from the windshield forward. The nose looks so low to the ground it’s almost like a Aston Martin, mainly when you’re looking at one with the Performance wheels and brakes.

I’ve ordered the PS2, fits us perfectly. I live far north in Norway, drive 99% on charging from my house. We have alot of darkness in the fall and winter, which means the headlights will be in use alot. The Pixel lights should be a clear winner in that regard for the PS2, and headlightwashers are only one car who has and its the PS2. Tow hitch and can pull 1500kg, forged wheels (and an option to use 3rd party wheels without losing warranty), no panelgaps, no ugly aero wheels, 360’ camera, more than one screen, electric tailgate, greater quality on the paintwork (Volvo paint>Tesla), looks alot better IMO, frameless mirrors look fantastic. The list is long for why I chose the Polestar over a Tesla. But the Tesla was never considered because of the bad quality on the build and paintwork.

Since when are manual steering wheel controls better than electric with memory?
In Tesla steering wheel position gets saved into your profile. If the car is driven by more than one person this means it will automatically restore your proffered position even when some other driver (say your wife) changed its position.
I won't go into 'easy entry' that automatically moves steering wheel and seat position so it is easier to get in and out.

    • @toddwright662
      @toddwright662 4 года назад +9

That was my first thought as well. I don't know how many driver presets the Polestar has (while still having to manually move the steering wheel), but the Model 3 has 10 (one can be taken for use as easy entry) and it adjusts EVERYTHING except the interior mirror (seat distance, height, recline...,exterior mirrors, and steering wheel height and distance). I have two presets for me in slightly different positions that I tend to use to shift slightly on longer drives that can be changed with two screen touches.

Michael Johnsen I think that's the point of his comment. As the Model 3 Performance is more expensive, you would get a much more equal car, for far less, if you buy the long range instead of the performance, in this comparison, and it's still quicker than the Polestar 2, and has a better breaking distance.

I don't understand the remark against Tesla's steering and mirror regulations. First, they are usually a one-time only setup, maybe with a couple of tweaks in the first hours/days of use. So it's pretty irrelevant if the controls are immediately available or behind a menu or two. Plus the steering adjust for the PS2 is manual, while the Tesla can save it in the driver profile, which is super handy if the car is driven by more than one person (which is often the case). Here Tesla have definitely the better solution.
As it often happens, this is very evident for a regular user of the car, and less to a reviewer/tester that goes from one car to another, maybe.

Although there is a supercharger within 10 km I do 90% of my charging at home - rooftop solar and off-peak grid. Costs are minimal. To be fair to the Polestar 2 many owners will be able to do that, so superchargers are not a deal maker/ breaker for people who don't do regular long trips. Prospective buyers should understand this. The Tesla Network is a major factor. However some people won't need it as most Journey's are less than 100 miles - for example me ... I don't need autopilot and I don't do more than 100 mile round trips (or one way stays) more than twice a year. For that any EV that does 200miles is more than enough for me.
And I'm very OCD with my cars, so build quality inside and out is a major factor for me when picking a car.
I'll give up a little range and the Tesla network for a more solid car that feels more premium for my sub £50k.

@@kevinashurst634 Quite right however, at the risk of sounding like a Tesla fan boy, there are some caveats with Ionity.

      2. Whilst they are rolling out more chargers, Ionity are still at only 200, whilst Tesla are at 500+ & growing at a similar rate. There is a question mark against their reliability.
      3. Cost - Tesla charge 24p kWh flat rate, Ionity charges 69p kWh (without a subscription), That's >187% increase!

However at the end of the day, the Tesla with an almost identical window price have obviously not worked out a deal with the lease companies. That to me is a major oversight.

Raymond Smith that’s why I didn’t mention that at all, Tesla owners know what they are getting into and in general they aren’t going to be any more reliable as they tend to have other issues which don’t make up for the lack of moving parts compared to an ICE vehicle. My point was that the interior quality for example is awful, cheap, nasty materials for the most part. At the price point they operate in, you would have a car full of wood, metal, high quality plastics and the finest leather. Just remember that the model x is literally in Bentley territory in terms of pricing. Also Tesla’s warranty might as well be 2 years anyway, just like a German car, I wouldn’t keep it past that point as stuff will go wrong I imagine. If you don’t care for quality than have at it but personally it’s why I only like German cars, huge difference between any brand and that offered by VW Group and BMW. All of these cars we have had from said manufacturers usually have had 0 issues and required 1-2 services and that was it. I would personally like to see the minimalist interior gone and better materials used, right now is like the typical American cars that didn’t sell well in the UK for the same reasons. It just has a steering wheel because it needs one. And before you start shouting range and superchargers:
1: You ideally don't use superchargers on a daily basis if you have a home charger setup, and when you don't, you use whatever is closest. You lot are Contradicting your typical anti-ICE argument of "I can charge from home and never need to stop at a station anymore"

What is it you want to see? The speed is is nice big numerals (about 1.5 cm high block numerals) that take no real focus to observe. The only other thing really is battery charge remaining that you need/want to look at every "once in a while", maybe. The rest of the stuff you are used to monitoring in an ICE vehicle, there just isn't an analog; no oil temp, oil pressure, coolant temp*, boost pressure, tachometer, battery/alternator voltage, and whatever others I'm forgetting... That stuff just doesn't exist because it has no purpose in an EV. I like that it's not behind the steering wheel, because I like the steering wheel at its lowest setting in most cars and frequently (not always) the wheel is right in my line if sight to the speedometer, so for me this isn't just a neutral thing and getting used to it by driving 100 miles or so, it's actually better. The drop from "looking at the road" to the speedometer in most cars (where the speedometer is in the binnacle behind the steering wheel is in the neighborhood of 15° for me; it's about 22° in my Model 3. It just isn't as big a deal as it is made out to be, and it seems it's never from anyone that actually drives a Tesla on a regular basis and gets used to it (it took me maybe 20 miles of driving to get used to it). Just because it's not what you're used to doesn't make it worse.

I drive a Tesla Model 3 & I wouldn’t trade it in for the PS2, but I’m happy that Polestar is coming on board with an electric vehicle, but I don’t think it will be comparable to the Tesla model cars! So if you’re not driving a Tesla you simply don’t understand how really great they are, as there’s simply nothing on the road that is comparable to them at this moment in time & the fact that it’s the minimalist design of the interior set up that I like & it took mere minutes for me to get use to the center display screen & now I’m not bothered at all! So I don’t know why we need a display screen behind the steering wheel like traditional cars, because this isn’t a traditional car & it will soon be fully autonomous, so what do I care about watching the road when the car is doing the driving? So I do hope Tesla gives us the 360° view in the future & I hope that they also incorporate the augmented reality I do like that, the other thing I would like for Tesla to do is to make the car more interactive like we interact with Siri or Alexa! Those are some features I hopeTesla incorporates in the future, I also want a car with an attitude & not just on the road, but when I imagine if I asked my car to do something & it asked me why? That would be hilarious!LOL!🤣🤣🤣

So I'll gladly trade in some range and maximum speed of ~260 km/h for a 'slower' ~210 km/h Polestar 2 with better looks, better interior, better build quality, extensive Volvo support network, more towing capacity, etc. Currently autopilot is only slightly better than ACC + lane assist. The "soon fully autonomous" has been going on for years; even if it's released this year it'll take a few more years to get past all the regulations in Europe. So I wouldn't hold your breath 😉

1.) You fail to mention how much cheaper the Standard Range Model 3 is than the entry Polestar 2. Like seriously ignoring all variants is kind of... wrong.
2.) “ disappointing seats” is subjective. I have amazing bucket seats in my Lexus, I found the Tesla model 3 sears to be even more comfortable. Talk about being knit picky
3.) I’m pretty sure comparing the performance model 3 vs the “ performance “ polestar is wrong... and is more on the Long Range Model 3 option, and then compare those prices.

Not the first review to point out the manual adjust of the steering column as an advantage, but how so? If you are the only drive of the car then you will only ever adjust once, so who cares how it is adjusted? If you have multiple drivers, then you have to adjust all the time, but because the Tesla does that electronically, it means steering column, and mirrors are auto-adjusted to whichever driver happens to be in the car (along with pretty much every other preference from air con and radio settings, to drive dynamics). So - how is manual adjustment of steering column or wing mirrors and advantage please?

Having driven these cars extensively for over a week I find your review to be quite biased in favor of the Tesla. Polestar's interior and exterior quality is superior. The Polestar is, and most would agree, the best looking car. For everyday driving the Polestar is the easiest to get in and out of, it's easier to load in and out of, you sit considerably higher; which is a plus. The Tesla drives better and the comfort is noticably better. The charging network is huge here in Norway, which is why we'll probably go with the Tesla in the end.

  • @nixer65
    @nixer65 3 года назад

Two critical things missed here. If you have sat in the rear of a Tesla model 3 then you will find that the extra headroom comes at the cost of a terrible seat angle - your thighs are unsupported and it is intolerable after 30 minutes or so. The headroom is less in the Polestar, but if you are 6 feet or less you will be fine - more than 6 feet and it is not going to be comfortable as you will need to adopt a slightly slumped position. Hence both are compromised on rear comfort. The second thing is the “dog issue” - if you have a dog then you need the hatch (and don’t forget the split/fold rear seats in the Polestar for those trips to the recycling centre). I have no idea why Tesla chose to go with a boot instead of a hatch - the model Y will fix that, but it is not available in the UK until 2022. I have a lot of experience of the UK charging network as I have had an i3 pure EV (not REX) for the last 3 years - and yes it is a mess but not unusable - and Polestar have teamed up with all of the major players to provide a unified access service (which was missed in the review - this was not playing fair What Car). However since I do 98% of my charging at home it really isn’t as big a deal as everyone makes out but I agree that Tesla definitely do this better. I will be buying the Polestar....being able to transport the dog is a “killer feature”

The Model 3’s simplistic layout is my favorite part of the car. After I drive my Performance 3 and get into my Discovery 4 I always miss the simple interior of the 3. I wouldn’t ever buy a Polestar for the simple fact that it’s not a Swedish car, but instead it’s a Chinese Geely in a different shell. It’s made in China on a shared platform with internal combustion engine cars. That means it’s got a transmission tunnel when there’s absolutely no reason for there to be one as there’s no driveshaft. This shared ICE platform also leads to the Polestar being obese (several hundred pounds heavier) and it is awkwardly tall.
I much prefer a Model 3 because it also has access to Superchargers, is faster and better driving (3 uses double wishbone front suspension vs. struts in the P2), the Model 3 is capable of up to 250kW DC fast charging vs 150kW in the P2, and Autopilot is by far much more advanced than the Polestar 2’s driver assist. The Model 3 also goes much further per charge and the Model 3 has tons more luggage space.
Whoever at Volvo/Geely/Polestar has this asinine obsession with these MANUALLY adjustable Ohlins dampers needs to be fired. There’s literally nobody buying a Volvo or Polestar that is trying to get all up under the car to adjust the dampers by hand. There’s a reason the ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED DAMPERS that literally every other car with adaptive damping uses.
The P2, even with the performance package, is more of a direct competitor to the Model 3 LR AWD. That car is just as quick as the Polestar 2, but it’s substantially cheaper than the 2, while retaining the same fun to drive characteristics of the Performance 3 with the better ride quality of smaller wheels (18” or 19” wheels).

Since i believe the Polestar is a much prettier car and their customer support is more serious from my little experience, i bought the Polestar. I would never again own a Tesla unless my work bought one for me or something similar.
In Scandinavia, where i live, the Tesla has a better charging network, a better customer fan base and therefore a better resale value most likely (although Tesla is upgrading their models faster than most people change underwear), it has a more comfortable highway ride (it is an American car after all...)
On the other hand the Polestar looks far better than any Tesla, the quality of bodywork and interior is miles ahead of any Tesla car, the material quality is also a lot better, the Top model of Polestar 2 is far cheaper than the top model of Tesla Model 3 or Y without cutting too many corners. Right. I just put an order for my Tesla Model 3, LR. Based on superior AI and proven road record and charging capabilities. What does your "Proper Car Company" offer that would have allowed me not to spend an hour on a motorway waiting for the car to be charged up to 80%?

Yasser Khan you just proved my point by stating... “based by superior AI”. Who cares about that on a car? It’s a car, not an office, it’s supposed to drive it, not be driven in by the computers. But hey, each to their own.

Tesla Model Y is hard to beat, too. A lot of storage..similar to the Model S. Tesla is 10 years ahead of everybody else. The charging times for every other EV are deal killers. The private company chargers are too expensive. They are pricing buyers out of the market. Make your next car a tesla. The only car that makes financial sense in 2020 and beyond regardless of fuel source.

The main thing I like about the Tesla over the Polestar 2 is that I can actually buy a Tesla.
Polestar 2 is showing 3 dealers in America where I can buy it.
Tesla Model 3 is $46,990 in America for the "Long Range" model (even cheaper for the base model). Polestar 2 being displayed as $59,900 starting price.

Very good comparison and review. gives me something to think about especially since my delivery date on my M3 has changed 13 times in the last month. most recently from being 2 days from the current day to 9-13 week from now. Checked Polestar delivery available in June and it's June 26th. Only concern I have Is how readily is the charging network and a high speed (150w) one. I'm sure you can't use the Tesla supercharge

The real competitor is the Long Range, but for it's real non-arctic use, I'd get a Standard Range+. Lighter, rear wheel drive drives better. Spend the savings on FSD and entertainment pack and then some.

@@TheTmat007 I have a Model 3 Performance, so does my dad and my little brother.
I have 30000km on mine, my dad got 70000km on his(includning two trackdays.) He have driven that distance in 18 months. THATS how addictive these things are.(his Porsche 964 have not moved an inch in that time....)
We have had zero problems. I will admit that the paint is too soft and too thin, and that I have a small rattle from the back seat(Tesla will fix it for free, I just haven't botherd yet) But I drive hard, and launch the car every single day at maximum power. Everything just works, and the infotainment and audio-quality is fantastic. Tesla got engineers from Bang & Olufsen to design the stereo.
I came to the same conclusion as Sandy Munro:
"The paint is bad, the interior quality could be better, but the electronics, suspension and drivetrain is so good it's laughable"

Tesla's fit & finish is very sloppy! The company needs to learn how to correctly assemble or put cars together. Elon should consider sending his engineers for a factory tour at Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Audi, BMW, or Mercedes-Benz. That way they can see how real automotive engineers take pride in producing cars. Also, I'm not a fan of Tesla's habit of cutting corners (as cost-saving measures) in building cars. I'm not a fan of just a single screen inside a car (like in the Model 3 and Y), with almost all the car's functionality. Elon doesn't seem to care about Tesla's poor quality. Tesla will be DOOMED, if it does not improve the overall quality of it cars. Porsche has already outdone Tesla in a number of ways, with the Taycan. This is just the beginning. When legacy automakers really start to take EVs seriously, no one (except cult members) will accept Tesla's poor quality.

    • @chrisalexandersb1748
      @chrisalexandersb1748 4 года назад

Tyran Mathurin I test drove a Taycan Turbo a couple of days ago, actually. Impressive car, but it did not kick as hard when accelerating as the Performance.(on the other hand after 100kph it goes better because of the gearbox). And oh my god the traction control were useless in the wet. The single screen is wierd at first, but after a while everything else just feels stupid. There are 4(!) screens in the Taycan, when there is zero reason to. There is a reason car makers are going over to 1 or 2 screens, it just works. But If I was spending that amount of money on a Porsche, it would be on a 911...... Teslas components are not the problem, American workers are. There are 7 faults per 10000 Model 3 produced in china. And my next Tesla will be made in Germany.

I mean I wouldn’t have used a performance model that the general population won’t buy including myself with a standard range or long range to compare. Seems like an honest review to both but I think the benefit surrounding either car is to buy for what you want. Overall nice quality for price and not a Tesla? Go Polestar. If you are looking to go more autonomous (Tesla I feel is leading since this is their huge initiative leading into the future) then buy a model 3 long range( you really don’t need the performance if your looking for cheaper and more range to “help” the environment.) Don’t buy one of these because you feel pressure by friends or family just test drive both and make a choice on “your” feel

  • @kevinkent6351

A few notes: the Model 3 performance and the Polestar 2 "performance" are not directly comparable. The Model Y LR is the direct comparison. In the U.S., the Teslas are less expensive. Also, if you're not comparing the Tesla white interior to the Polestar 2 interior then it isn't a fair comparison. The white interior is next level.

  • @simong2391

comparing a Performance model 3 is only to make it more expensive than the PoleStar. Honestly nobody needs that much power. I have a Standard range +, absolutely no range anxiety with the supercharger network and way more performance than needed. I only drive in Chill mode because it is too powerful !
So comparing SR+ Model 3 with Standard Polestar would make more sense for the price. Tesla > Polestar. Then in terms of performance Tesla > Polestar. So very good car if you don't like Tesla but not better.

I would have the Polestar 2. The reason is the over reason why the Polestar is better than the Tesla Model 3, but not mentioned. The Tesla can only tow 910kgs. The Polestar can to 1500kgs. The other reason I have the Polestar. I what a car with a fully opening tailgate Not some Mickey Mouse letter box as found on the Tesla. If the Tesla did come with a tailgate the the choice would have been harder.

Those frameless mirrors are cool, but given the importance of aerodynamics, particularly for electric cars, how do they keep optimal air flow if the whole mirror assembly moves. I know it seems a minor thing, but mirrors are reasonably important for drag coefficient - e.g. that Honda-e claims a 6% drag reduction by replacing them with cameras.
