Hey Timmy, even for Cruiser owner I love watching your channel. Keep it up and don't change the way you make them, its great. Well done on your 'sensible' approach to maintenance and noticing the little tell tail signs of an emerging issue then fixing without all the drama some other channels do. I'll definitely be watching your adventures.

Decided to check your own channel and mate I can’t stop watching. I drive a Prado 120. Don’t even own a Patrol but I can’t stop watching your videos. As a gu owner and previous gq ute owner everything you did is just patrol maintanance. I keep saying i need to do diff gearbox oil's etc but dont do it this video is motivating me to just get it done!!!!
Your style of driving takes its toll on any vehicle!!! Patrols are tough but nothing is going to withstand that terrain without damages. I do plenty of 4x4ing over here in the south of wa but it's mainly beach/dune stuff over here so no need for huge lift tyres and lockers
Love it Timmy... and now I want a hoist!!! Keep doing your thing mate. Totally relatable and giving me the confidence to tackle the bigger jobs on my GQ. 😎👌
When your hand priming the fuel prime till its hard, crack the breather on the pump and go again till there's no air and then close the breather and prime till hard again, love the videos
Awesome content Timmy 👌 Informational and executed well mate!! Little tip with doing the fuel filter after year's of being a Diesel mechanic fill the fuel filter up with clean fresh Diesel before fitting back onto the housing.. Then you aren't pumping for age's to bleed it.. Just something I learnt mate.. I've seen those panhard bars do the same over the year's as well.. Vibration and corrugations rough terrain seems to loosen the adjusting locking nuts.. The way you did is correct mate just a little tip mate from year's of servicing heavy vehicle's 👌
Thanks heaps mate appreciate it 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I didn’t actually have any diesel on me or I definitely would haha, however I usually just hit the key to get the lift going and crank until it starts 🤣🤣
@timmyhasheart 😂😂 that definitely helps having a lift pump.. We used to straight 50 grade gearbox oil.. It's normally used in Roadranger truck transmission's in extreme condition's.. We found they shift a little smoother especially cold.. Mate that we converted his gearbox oil is still running it after 8yrs no issue's at all.. His used to be a bit hard to get into 2nd gear when cold now no problem's.. Just something we found mate.. You were spot on with the glow plug circuit as well mate.. Same as what you do putting the control box near heat to dry it out.. You can give it a spray with circuit board cleaner which will help with corrosion and the drying out time mate.. Awesome content 👌
Just got to love maintenance 🤣 to be fair it's a great feeling nowing you have just done a bunch of work to your car especially when it drives better !!!
What a Great maintenance video. Something for everyone in this episode. The transmission jack is probably safer with two people than one. Thanks for the other handy tips in the video.
I love your videos. Great information and your confidence and information is awesome. I do believe your channel is unique in this way. You communicate in a great way. You talk to us in the same way you’d talk to a mate in the shed. I’ve also seen your collaborations with other RUclipsrs, and they all respect your knowledge and 4wd knowledge and experience. You should be proud of your work.
A good little trick for priming fuel filters if ya primer pump is shot is pressurise the fuel tank with air in the filler neck, great on trucks as well when they have a couple of filters
Oh yeah that’s a good idea, tbh it’s not that bad with a lift pump just leave it running for a few seconds and it primes up then just crank the rest through 👍🏻👍🏻
Great vid mate. That gearbox looked horrid when you spun her around for the camera. I felt that knock on the head mate, spin ya cap backwards. You'll save some skin on ya noggin.😎👍
Yeah dude for sure, front is heim and rear is fairly new they’re solid 🙏🏻🙏🏻 when I said the last thing it can be is tyres I just meant I’d been through the rest 👊🏻👊🏻
Great video Timmy 👍 I know your try to balance giving good information while keeping the videos interesting and not too long. While I know some people prefer a more entertaining video, for me personally I prefer when you explain the little ins-and-outs of what you're doing. So don't be afraid to explain things more if you want to.
Thanks heaps mate yeah it’s tough on RUclips because like I want to do what I want to do while being as thorough as I can while not being too long while also trying to get people to stick around, especially now with a sponsor or two I’m banking on the videos going “well” to ensure they’re getting out of it what they deserve for the gear they provide etc. appreciate the feedback man 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I took the shims out of my king pins and no more wobbles also check the bearings because they only move a short distance while turning and those few bearing rollers get worn or reposition the bearing.
Yeah boi, the shims determine preload on the bearings and so you may start with shims when they’re new and then if you get play, removing them will tighten up the swivel hubs, and yeah you can check the races for wear marks in one spot, but that only generally happens if the rollers are not moving in the cage properly, realistically if both races and the cage are free it shouldn’t do it, but yeah mine were all aces cheers mate 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Mine turned out to be the track rod behind the front diff. Or tie rod. Whatever they call it. One of the rod ends had play giving it a slight wobble at 60 an under breaking which made me think panard aswell.
Yeah I reckon that’s contributing too, not the rear one though that’s solid, but the front heims have a little bit of play and I’ve had it before where it’s contributed 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Absolutely it can, I should have mentioned when I said “only other thing it can be is tyre balance” is because I know what I’ve addressed lately, radius got new bushes before Easter last year 🤙🏻
Tremendous mate well done. I always get something out of "service" vids. You mentioned with the brake bleed & which corner to start with ... to my mind lived-experience wins every time = if you know something works stick with it (& yeah tell us about it). Secondly I found the glow plug info very interesting particularly the temp sensor?? I'll have to re-watch & then go check mine. Cheers mate all the best

@@derJackistweg hmmm I don’t see how that can tell you that a glow plug is actually glowing, all that’s telling you is the glow plugs are grounded, which of course they are they’re screwed into a block.. my way is the only way I know of to physically see them glow.
Yeah honestly I think it’s an old wives tale, never ever had a problem haha, slots, no slots, holes, no holes, dealers choice go ham and just use whatever 😅
Yeah I reckon you’re right 🤙🏻🤙🏻 I have to pull the transfer again soon to replace the reduction gear shaft it ruined so I might actually drill its own breather into that centre section 🤙🏻🤙🏻
While a steering damper is not the way to try and cure death wobbles, Patrols should still have one. I had death wobbles in my GU which were intermittent - turned out to be the Goodyear Wrangler MTR Kevlar tyres when they got to 5 years old. They had even wear but would sometimes distort while parked, even with 40psi. Replaced with Nittos which have never had the issue. I did love the MTRs, though, so much grip they kept spinning on steel wheels so put them on alloys.
Yeah tyres a big cause of wobble for sure, but yeah don’t feel the need to run a damper in my GQ, I feel like it just hides issues, but would be nice for those big hits not to break my wrists but yeah, haven’t felt the need for one 🤷🏻♂️
@@timmyhasheart Thats very true something I’ll keep in mind I had a quick look mine seems all ok ill swap the phanhard bushes fingers crossed that fixes most of it🤣
What a great episode really enjoyed the whole lot to be honest im pretty dam glad i watched the whole lot. With bleeding the brakes if i have someone with me i always take the bleeding nipple out and use my finger then start pumping you be so surprised how much crap comes outta it.
Hahaha at work. 🤣🤣 na I honestly don’t do much else, work, edit sleep, work, edit, wheel 🤷🏻♂️ I don’t drink or have a partner or kids so I dunno, I manage somehow 🤣
Very happy you went a bow 2 and not bow 2 plus, I don't understand why but I don't rate them as good as a few others motors. They should be because there quiet large.
Yeah I’ve heard that quite a bit that’s why I went the 2, I think it’s the windings the 2 plus is a lot closer to an OX they’re built for 8HP as opposed to the bow2 which is only 6.8hp and more torque 👍🏻👍🏻 it’s to do with the windings being series vs. parallel wound. 🤙🏻
Hey Timmy, Great vid. Thanks for all of your Tips & Tricks. Not sure on the GQ's, but my GU has seals to separate the King pins from the Swivel Hub. Do replace them or just leave them out, which is like a Landy? Cheers from the Northern Rivers NSW 😃👍
Yes from factory GQ and GU have a little disposable metal plate that separates the king pin bearing grease from the CV grease, I usually do run them however when I bought this GU diff it was freshly rebuilt and it didn’t have them and I haven’t yet needed to replace the king pin races
Fantastic episode and I don’t like patrols!! Respect your ability to do this yourself. Epic image of the vehicle on the hoist with glow of fireplace in distance. So does the fireplace heat whole shed well? Must get freezing in winter in tassie? Need another video like you did with your mate solo and had to cross a massive river before that awesome hut.
Absolute ripper episode as always. Best channel for anything GQ and TD! Question, that throw out bearing, you said it rattled at traffic lights, I've got a rattle in my TD and when I put my foot on the clutch pedal the rattle stops, release the pedal and it starts again. Had my clutch replaced a few months ago and the bloke said he replaced it all and is telling me it'll be the output shaft on the gearbox making the rattle. What's your thoughts? Thanks mate appreciate it🤙
Yeah definitely the boxes do rattle around a bit, it’s a very very similar sound like.. before I replaced the box and the throw out this time it had a hell of a rattle and now, a week or so in the rattle is back but I can tell it’s probably just the box, which I think is what he’s talking about, but the throw out is way worse when they’re fkd out 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Another stellar episode Tim. Hard to put into words how enjoyable your content is. Pardon my ignorance but is the e-brake on the driveshaft? Thanks again for all your content.
Yeah I would if I had diesel on hand, but yeah I didn’t have any diesel laying around, but like people think of priming diesel as some big nasty chore, it was only a couple mins on the primer and it’s good to go, if you have a lift pump it’s even quicker 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Always a pleasure watching your Vlogs Sunday night. Off to Kingchrome for the tool launch. What happened to the Kingchrome toolkit giveaway winner announcement? Did I miss it? Jimny twin locked now 🤣
Technically you didn’t miss it haha, I never “announced” it I forgot to film it, a couple of the people that won though did tag me in a Insta post that I shared, I’ll have to film something on it next video. But yeah selected 5 random people and had them sent out and they’re received etc. Appreciate the kind words mate 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Another good vid Timmy. Did you have any trouble pulling the glo plugs out? Sometimes they can't be removed on high mileage heads without destroying the head...? Did you use a special pulling tool?
The availability of them? Can’t say I’ve ever come across even one part needed in all the GQ’s, junkyards, wreckers, old GQs I’ve bought, old farms, I’ve been through. Can’t say I’ve ever seen one used in winch racing either.. Electric winches are the future. If I bought a unimog or something and it had the PTO adapter bolted on, the linkages in tact and healthy, the actual winch bolted to the front, and everything was healthy then sure I might consider it but I feel like this is one of those times someone is just asking without thinking. 🤣
@mattluszczak8095 never had an issue I’d rather all the schmutz that gets in there from headlight deep bogholes be able to just as easily get out 😅 never failed me in the years of motors and gearboxes this things had 🫠 however I respect others’ approach also
my input bearing not sounding good in my GU wagon. Should I try and get box out myself or take it to someone. the weight and space to get it out with no hoist etc.
@@jamestanner9198 never done one with a body lift mate but done countless cars on the ground with one jack, 2 jacks, engine crane through the door, all sorts of ways 🤣

Loose phanhard never thought to check mine I just brought new bushes and dampener. I’ll check that out now 😂😂
Yeah any little bit of play can sort of amplify a wobble, I actually don’t run a damper at all tbh 😅
@@timmyhasheart Thats very true something I’ll keep in mind I had a quick look mine seems all ok ill swap the phanhard bushes fingers crossed that fixes most of it🤣
Hey mate really enjoyed this video
Awesome dude thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you for informative video
No worries, thanks for watching 👊🏻
What a great episode really enjoyed the whole lot to be honest im pretty dam glad i watched the whole lot. With bleeding the brakes if i have someone with me i always take the bleeding nipple out and use my finger then start pumping you be so surprised how much crap comes outta it.
Oh true!? Yeah right I’ll have to have a suss next time 🤙🏻
Works a full time job, has time to 4wd, film, edit and post sick videos. When do you sleep Timmy 😂
Good work
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Yeah dude that little fireplace actually does really well tbh!!
And yeah every winter we go through there, nearly time to head through again!!
Thanks mate appreciate it🤙
Yeah definitely the boxes do rattle around a bit, it’s a very very similar sound like.. before I replaced the box and the throw out this time it had a hell of a rattle and now, a week or so in the rattle is back but I can tell it’s probably just the box, which I think is what he’s talking about, but the throw out is way worse when they’re fkd out 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Wooooo Timmy!!!!! Been waiting for another vid to come out and it's on the GQ!! lets gooo! Keep up ths great work champ 🫡
Just wonderring mate, what's your go to tracks around tassie up north which are relatively simple but are great to do?
Every fortnight on Sunday mate!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Ahhh there is a LOT of good stuff around asbestos/sheepwash. 🤙🏻🤙🏻
@@timmyhasheart Haven't been up the asbestos ranges in a fat minute, you been down the east coast much near bicheno and all that too?
@@NotARUclipsrAtAllyeah dude pretty much been everywhere over east, some good shit behind scamander
@@timmyhasheart Will have to check it out when I fix the pooey, cracked the head on the bloody thing the other day on the way home from work 🤣🤣🤣
You rock bro
Thanks heaps mate cheers for watching 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you heaps for the glo plug talk, just solved allot of my problems haha fuck yeah Timmy 👌🤘🏻
Haha awesome mate glad to hear it cheers 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Another stellar episode Tim. Hard to put into words how enjoyable your content is. Pardon my ignorance but is the e-brake on the driveshaft? Thanks again for all your content.
Yeah dude on patrols the handbrake is on the back of the transfer 👍🏻 that’s why they work haha
Great content as always
What do you coolent temps run at ? You didn't specify 😅
70 around town 80-85 all day every day anywhere else 🤙🏻
Great video 📹
Thanks mate cheers for watching 👊🏻👊🏻
Spot on man! Where did you get that race driver for you wheel besrings from if you dont mind me asking?
Ahh it’s actually a kincrome one haha, I’ve wanted one for ages and asked tank very nicely when they were sorting me the other gear. 😅
@@timmyhasheart legend
Good video, old man told me when changing the fuel filter to fill it up before putting it back in the car. Wondering if you do the same?
Yeah I would if I had diesel on hand, but yeah I didn’t have any diesel laying around, but like people think of priming diesel as some big nasty chore, it was only a couple mins on the primer and it’s good to go, if you have a lift pump it’s even quicker 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Thanks Timmy loving your videos mate
Always a pleasure watching your Vlogs Sunday night. Off to Kingchrome for the tool launch. What happened to the Kingchrome toolkit giveaway winner announcement? Did I miss it? Jimny twin locked now 🤣
Technically you didn’t miss it haha, I never “announced” it I forgot to film it, a couple of the people that won though did tag me in a Insta post that I shared, I’ll have to film something on it next video. But yeah selected 5 random people and had them sent out and they’re received etc.
Appreciate the kind words mate 🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@timmyhasheart congrats to the winners. Looking forward to your new new tool goodies. Don’t use Insta that much but hooked up with your feed.
Another good vid Timmy.
Did you have any trouble pulling the glo plugs out?
Sometimes they can't be removed on high mileage heads without destroying the head...?
Did you use a special pulling tool?
Na never had a problem before, but this motor is also a brand new motor, I got it from Nissan, only just clicked over 40,000 👍🏻👍🏻
with the availability of PTO winches for GQ's why mess with electric ?
The availability of them? Can’t say I’ve ever come across even one part needed in all the GQ’s, junkyards, wreckers, old GQs I’ve bought, old farms, I’ve been through. Can’t say I’ve ever seen one used in winch racing either.. Electric winches are the future. If I bought a unimog or something and it had the PTO adapter bolted on, the linkages in tact and healthy, the actual winch bolted to the front, and everything was healthy then sure I might consider it but I feel like this is one of those times someone is just asking without thinking. 🤣
@@timmyhasheart now that's interesting , lots of parts here in NZ mostly from Jap imports , (Safari) very easy to get hold of
Rtv mate between transfer and gbox and bellhousing to engine
That’s what the book says!! And I’ll never do it 🤣🤣
@timmyhasheart why not it comes apart easily once the nuts are off . Inside.nice and clean...
@mattluszczak8095 never had an issue I’d rather all the schmutz that gets in there from headlight deep bogholes be able to just as easily get out 😅 never failed me in the years of motors and gearboxes this things had 🫠 however I respect others’ approach also
Hey mate just a quick question, what is the name of the brendix kit for the gqs or are they all universal?? cheers
I couldn’t actually find the upgrade kit for a GQ unfortunately dude only for GUs, which is what I used because I have a GU diff 🤙🏻🤙🏻
@@timmyhasheart thats why I couldn’t find anything ahaha, cheers legend
my input bearing not sounding good in my GU wagon. Should I try and get box out myself or take it to someone. the weight and space to get it out with no hoist etc.
I did plenty gearbox on the ground countless times it’s honestly fine mate but up to you whether you wanna give it a go haha
@@timmyhasheart room to manover it back in as no body lift. ? So on ground with a jack ?
@@jamestanner9198 never done one with a body lift mate but done countless cars on the ground with one jack, 2 jacks, engine crane through the door, all sorts of ways 🤣
@@timmyhasheart have been told you have to bash up tunnel all sorts of things to get box back in. They are a heavy SOB !!
@jamestanner9198 yeah i dunno if it does help, my GQ has been bashed when I first did it cause I don’t really care what my floor looks like haha, but I’ve done other GQs and GU without being bashed just fine
