As a fan -- I'm not sure I'll ever be able to express what it meant to get this album as a surprise four months into the pandemic. Working from home -- feeling isolated -- and she announced one morning on Instagram that the album was dropping that night. I can still remember clicking play at midnight in the dark -- and listening to the whole thing. What a gift. I'll never get over that she did that for us. She is ALL about the fandom.

she's also a total workaholic who can't sit still. She expected to be touring; was primed and ready to go; all dressed up and the venues all shut down. Bad for her, but really good for us. folklore in July, Long Pond Sessions in September (ish?), and Evermore in December. The image of the piano as her lifeboat in Cardigan is totally true for her.

This is exactly how I felt. I was already an introvert and thought I would be mostly unaffected by the shutdown. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I think it was the shift from choosing to stay home to being unable to see and touch family and friends. By the time restrictions were lifted in Missouri I was ready to hug a damn stranger. This album was everything to me and is still my comfort album.

I think that’s majority of people. Songs like Shake It Off, 22 and We Are Never Getting Back Together turned people off and gave people the wrong impression. It’s easy to assume what an artists music sounds like from what they heard and not want to check them out. I didn’t like Back To Black by Amy Winehosue (just not my taste), and after I decided to listen to her music, I realized she had so many great songs and she’s one of my favorite artists. I always liked Taylor and her singles because I was a young girl, but as I got older and my music taste changed, I stopped paying attention to her. After Folklore, I realized she was a great songwriter and has so many great deep cuts. Folklore was definitely the best decision she’s ever made career wise. It brought so many people who aren’t fans into her music.

The Long Pond Studio Sessions (released Nov 25, 2020 on Disney+) was the first time they were able to play the album together in person (Sept 2020) because of the pandemic. She started working on Folklore in March (national lockdown) from tracks Dessner (some from him past files) sent her & they all worked online compiling it. It dropped July 24, 2020.

idk if anyones pointed this out BUT my tears ricochet is about scooter braun and each line of the chorus correlates to a song on each of the albums he stole from her:
i didnt have it in myself to go with grace (state of grace from red)
and you're the hero flying around saving face (superman from speak now)
and if i'm dead to you why are you at the wake? ('the old taylor is dead' from repuation)
cursing my name (the way i loved you from fearless)
wishing i stayed (all you had to do was stay from 1989)
look at how my tears ricochet (teardrops on my guitar from debut)
and of course the line "and when you can't sleep at night you hear my stolen lullabies" like the albums he stole from her. she's literally a genius

Like how you tied all the lyrics in!!
I have always thought it was more about Scott Borchetta than Braun. He was selling Big Machine anyway(he started fishing for offers in 2012), and he had over a decade of refusing to renegotiate the terms of her contract. Braun just comes in for extra hate because he bought the company, but not selling her the masters was Borchetta. The bs BMLG put her through with trying to block her from using her music at the Artist of the Decade award show in 2019, and refusing to license her using her music from the Rep tour in her documentary didn't help, but I expect that to be more from Big Machine's management (Braun didn't change anything at Big Machine, Borchetta still runs it). Sour grapes because her leaving lowered the value of the company. . . . . just guessing, though. Oh, extra hate --- didn't mean she didn't already have reasons to dislike him before that! bc she did.

    • @sirsimonthesentry4787

I believe it is about Scott, NOT Scooter. She has said that it is about someone who can go from your most loved, trusted resin to the person who hurts you the most and suddenly becomes the person who betrays you. She was never good with Scooter, ever.

not the immediately previous owners, though. Harkness died in the 1970s. But she has a lot of real life connections to the story -- including St. Louis, where her grandmother was from; performing arts, music, gossipy neighbors and media, and celebrity friends. . . . and cats. Imo, her Covid albums Folklore and Evermore are her best albums by far.
Exile and Epiphany are my two favorites, by far.
I’m sorry that people are overreacting about your experience with an album. That’s crazy as music is very subjective. I’m just happy to hear you enjoying the album! New subscriber here!🙋🏼‍♀️
She was going through rough patches with her boyfriend of a few years by then, so there’s many songs that are pure folklore (like “Cardigan”, “Betty” and “August” - it is a fictional love trilogy where all songs come from a different person’s perspective from the three people is so good) but some are about war, the pandemic, her awful issues with Big Machine who has her “stolen lullabies” in her song Masters and heartbreak. This album, out of the two, is superior to any others.
Fantastic choice. Really showcases her vocal range. 🎉❤👏🏻

You should check out the album prologue and then give it another listen. The lore for this storytelling is wild! This was groundbreaking for her and only happened because of quarantine. Then, just 5 months after folklore dropped, she announced that its sister album evermore would be released that evening. Evermore also has a prologue to read before you listen. These are highly regarded as being some of the most poetic songwriting and storytelling albums she has ever done (yet!). Btw i enjoyed your performance breaks lol 😂

One more thing, try listening to her albums a few times though even when you don't think you'll like some of the songs. I consistently have songs that i don't vibe with on first listen, but on the fourth listen, it's like they open up and reveal their beauty. Taylor's an album artist, meaning that each album is a journey of a feeling, an idea, a vibe, a time in her life.

It's interesting what people connect with and how their life experience shape how they see things.
No shade to you or anyone else but the part you thought was funny in "Seven" is the part that makes me cry every time.
I interpret those lines as a 7 year old seeing her friend living in a house with an abusive father and having to hide in a closet to stay safe. And this seven years old wants to save her friend but doesn't know how other than saying the friend could come live with her. Different childhood experiences. I relate to the friend she wants to help but can't.

  • @sherriromas5871
    @sherriromas5871 7 месяцев назад +12

Awe, for Seven it is so nice you found joy in it--it actually is partially about a friend who at the time she didn't get it (because she was seven), but was being abused (dad is always mad, hide in the closet etc). The song kills me. Same with Epiphany when you realize it was written during the height of the pandemic and it is about how health care workers will be suffering from PTSD for a long time to come, just like those who go through war--how no one can prepare them for the reality and the horrors. I think you would really enjoy watching Long Pond as she goes a lot into what inspired the songs and her collaboration with Aaron. All the songs you say you probley wouldn't turn on again, I felt the same way at first listen and now there are no throw aways on this masterpiece.

  • @Joey-rock
    @Joey-rock 7 месяцев назад +25

    Seven breaks my heart everytime.
So, In case you didn't know, Cardigan/August/Betty are related s in they're part of a teenage love triangle, each song sung from the perspective of one of them. Betty sings Cardigan, the other woman, Augustine, sings August, and James sings Betty.
I have a wild theory that the father in Seven is the same who sings This is me trying, since he is an alcoholic ('I think your house is haunted' = spirits = alcohol). When it hits you, it's so so heartbreaking, that sweet melody hiding the sad context of a broken home.
And going even further, that he's also the father of Betty ('leaving like a father'). So the one who sings Seven is maybe James, meaning they're friends since childhood.

Taylor co-produces her albums (all of them after her debut); individual songs are co-produced with people she is working with at the time (so, early albums mostly Nathan Chapman, songs from Red to Reputation include Max Martin and Shellback and Jack Antonoff (but Clean was Imogen Heap). Lover had some tracks with Joel Little; folklore was mostly Antonoff and Aaron Dessner; Evermore was mostly Dessner. On her re-records, she had her tour music producer fill in for Chapman, and brought in some of the original producers to replicate their work (and using new production on her Vault tracks). Easiest way to find who wrote with her or produced a particular track, is to go to her discography on Wikipedia and check the track list.

I’m really glad you liked this one! Was not sure how it would go based on how well you liked Midnights and Rep.
If I really could only have one TS album forever, I would choose Speak Now, I think. My absolute can’t-live-without TS songs are on there. But day to day to listen to it, it’s got to be Midnights Til Dawn (or quite possibly TTPD). As you say, the mix of the great writing with the pop sound just really does it for me. That said, it would hurt me to part with My Tears Ricochet, Mad Woman, Ivy and Champagne Problems (Evermore). And 1989 just makes me so damn happy even if the writing isn’t at the same level as the later albums. Clean and Out of the Woods? Come on.
But Speak Now and Midnights probably win in the end.

I don't think you should do 1989 next because that's where a lot of her hits come from and idk save it for later when you have more "respect" for her. Or have more of a "connection" idk just personally I recommend holding off on it.

I personally think Folkore is one of her best album and one of the best to introduce her as an artist and songwrting ❤ this album and her lyrics are just so special to me and really get me through some hard things this year you just connect with her lyrics and i think its beautiful ❤

Folklore/evermore are my favorite album (I can't really pick a favorite between the two).
Now that you've heard the album, you really, really need to see folklore: The Long Pond Sessions movie. Here are two sample clips from the movie:
Taylor Swift - this is me trying (the long pond studio sessions)

    Exile (Long Pond Sessions)

Also: We might need to call out the National Guard, or a SWAT team, or something. You forgot The Lakes! 😧

    Hello!
I agree with you about the writing on this album.
I would strongly suggest you listen to Evermore. Many of us would argue the writing is just as good - possibly even better.
The production is also fantastic. Like Folklore, it’s elegant and restrained. What’s a little different from Folklore is, if you really listen, a number of the Evermore songs have a more “layered” production. There’s a lot going on but, somehow, it remains subtle, allowing the lyrics to take center stage.
    Have a great afternoon!

Cardigan is my favorite song because of the vibe. But I love My Tears Ricochet too …because the writing is insane. I feel the betrayal she felt when Scott sold her masters to Scooter.
Folklore is my #1 album from her.

You may react to evermore next. For me, folklore has 'grayish' mood, while evermore has more dark vibrant colors like gold, blue, brown. Folklore is summer/autumn warm. Evermore is more winter cold, but with the heat of fireplace, the smell of coffee, and more depressing😂. I love both so much

If you’d like to switch gears to a different version of Taylor, I highly recommend you check out the Reputation Tour version of Don’t Blame Me. I know you listened to the album, but the tour performance of this song is epic.
Another something different would be the Saturday Night Live performance of False God. It’s kinda jazzy-sexy with a good bit of sax.
    Have a good day!

Cardigan, August, and Betty is a teenage love triangle. Cardigan is Betty’s POV, August is the other girl’s, and Betty is from James’ POV.
But fun fact, Betty, James, and Inez are the names of 3 of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds daughters. Taylor used their names with Blake and Ryan’s blessing.

It’s refreshing to see someone give an honest opinion about songs in her discography without sugar coating it; I think critical thinking is missing from a lot of her fandom these days. Good on you for staying true to your own tastes!
I think Folklore is, along with Evermore, her most thoughtfully written in her catalogue, though I think each album tells a different story that can be appreciated separately from her others. Her diversity as a musician is one of the best things about her artistry.
My personal favorite is Speak Now, as it’s her most emotionally vulnerable and honest album. My LEAST favorite, since you asked, is definitely Lover…overly bloated with some of her most offensive tracks. Good reaction, man!

Aaron Dessner & Jack worked with Taylor on this one. I discovered Aaron from Folklore and he is in the band The Nationals and owns the Long Pond Studios where Taylor Aaron and Jack performed all these songs live. You should review the Long Pond Studio sessions. They are amazing. Aaron is so unbelievably gifted. He wrote the music for the movie Cyrano! Aaron was also able to add Taylor’s grandmother’s opera singing in the background of Marjorie from the Evermore album.

One of my favorite things about this album is the tracks disguised cleverly as romantic relationships but they are actually about business relationships (my tears ricochet & mad woman in particular). She was screwed over by her own label and the songs are about that. It’s so much more emotional than romance honestly!

For me, which one is her best and which one is my favorite, are 2 different conversations. I can't decide if Midnights or Folklore is my favorite. It depends on my mood. But I can objectively say that I don't think Midnights is her best; it just hits me in a personal way that makes it one of my top 2, if not favorite. But best...I'd say Folklore OR Red. Again, depends on my mood!

Folklore and Evermore demonstrate her incredible lyricism. Most of the stories are not personal… only a few are. For instance, Cardigan, August, and Betty all tell the same story, from 3 different perspectives. Cardigan is from the perspective of a woman looking back on events in her adolescence. August and Betty tell the same story but the characters are telling it in real time during their adolescence. THAT is brilliant songwriting.

Can I just say I absolutely adore you? Lol it’s the slow songs and your hyped “THIS SONG IS FIRE”
Crazy people are crazy, regardless… don’t let the fan bases get to you.
I watch Taylor swift reaction videos every day. I’m going to her concert this year, I thoroughly enjoy your videos.
I can not recommend the long pond studio sessions of this album on Disney+ enough. It’s her, Aaron, and Jack just in a studio and giving back story to the lyrics.
Peace is my favorite song lol.
Taylor is well loved bc she cares and shows she cares bc you can keep listening to this album so many times and discover more. Like the timing of cardigan, Betty, August- at the same time in each song, she refers to the other songs. So she times that up. Betty, James, Inez- the names she used are the names of Blake lively and Ryan Reynolds’s kids bc they are friends. Sooo many Easter eggs.
Worst album for me is probably earlier stuff based off how much I skip, depends on mood though.
