- Yes you can! In this video I show how I apply 2K clear over a very heavily decalled model car body. This is the Fujimi 1/24th scale BMW Z4 GT3 car with the Hatsune Miku Goodsmile Racing 2013 livery.
Here is the link for the decals:

** And no, this is not my secret ME project if you are wondering **
Nice tutorial there James, it's great to learn techniques from other modellers too since when I build a JTCC car, these are also filled with decals. Nice collection of Goodsmile cars too, well done 👍🏼
Thank you for watching Karl👍 I appreciate the support for every video. Thank you!
I'm primarily a military modeler but I also build cars and bikes (and sci-fi and more recently Warhammer) (I have a problem). Anyways, I've been at it for 46 years and after watching this, I'm going to give the Splashpaints product a try. Thanks for the great tutorial and this old dog may have learned a new trick!
Absolutely! Thanks for watching and dropping me a comment👍
OMG now clear coats can be syrupy. Aaaarrgghh to quote Charlie Brown. Those cars looked incredible. Thanks for sharing
You haven’t seen anything yet Wayne, wait till I cut and buff that clear. 😜 thanks for watching 👍
Never knew you could use Mr. Hobby. I bought a gallon of Urethane reducer along time ago. Love those decals on your Z4s. Thanks for sharing
Hi Mike, I have a bottle of urethane reducer but was always afraid to use it with the 2k. Maybe I should do another SME and try it.🤓 thanks for watching bud.
Thanks for sharing Mr. James she shine like a bottle over them decals!!👌👌👌
Thanks Willy, I appreciate your support 👍
Vary well done 2 things you did different then anybody else I have seen .1st you let the mix 1st for 10min 2nd you started from the bottom up has to be the Best way I have seen to lay 2k down thanks for the tutorial on how you apply clear coat ,You have some really cool builds there too .enjoyed James thanks.
Thanks Deen, I’m so glad to help you all out in making your projects shine. 👍
Cool process. I’m going to let my 2K rest today before I spray my car. Those all look great👍👍
Thanks so much for watching big chef, I’m glad to help👍
Thank you for the tip on clear coat over decals James.
Thanks for watching Horton, I appreciate your support 👍
2K is a great clear for shooting over decals, bodies all look really nice sir.
Thanks for watching Left Coast, I appreciate the support 👍
Thanks for the information James. I have never been brave enough to clear over decals. Ron
Thanks for watching Ron, the secret is that mist coat to seal them before wetter coats.
I always learn something new from you. Thanks for sharing & have a great weekend, Cory
Thanks a lot Cory, my pleasure👍 thanks for watching and commenting.
Looks great James, great tutorial video. Thanks for sharing buddy.
Thanks for watching Jeff, I’m glad you enjoyed the video👍
*I love the colors used in those decals~Very cool :))*
Thanks so much for watching Ratt 👍
Since you've done the cars, you need to do the Snow Miku trams that run in Sapporo every year!
I’ll have to look into that JD, thanks for watching 👍
Great tutorial James and those decals😍
Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I appreciate your support 👍
Excellent video. I’ve just picked up my first set of 2K so this is very useful to me. Much appreciated.
Awesome Kyle, good luck wear hand and lung protection in a well ventilated space.
@@ScaleModelExperiment you’ve got it. Appreciate it
Thank you for your clear video. Let's see if I can get such nice decals in Holland. 👍🏻
Thanks for watching PMB, I’m pretty sure Hobby Easy delivers to Holland.
Thanks James. Great Tutorial!

Nice . Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks for watching Big Charlie👍
Hello James, great videos and excellent work on the models! Do you ever use acryllic gloss varnish for your models? I use VMS HD Topcoat Gloss for aircraft models, but i wonder if i can use it on car models? I want them to shine, so maybe 2K clearcoat is the only option?
Thank you for watching. I have been using 2k for over 15 years now and it’s what I know best. I have seen others use a lacquer clear and polish to impressive results. I think that acrylic clears and enamel clears take too long to cure. Plus, whatever color the clear in the bottle is matters. If it has a yellow tint, don’t use it! It won’t have the optical clarity you desire.
@@ScaleModelExperiment ok, thanks for your reply, i'll do some tests with acryllic first, but after seeing your videos i think it will turn out in using 2K clearcoats :)
@Triplegix as long as you are safe about using the 2k you’ll be fine. proper protection is mandatory (both respirator and fume evacuation). Wet sanding afterwards will make for a perfect finish.
Hi James: Nice video. How much air pressure are you using?
Thanks for watching. I shoot at 20 psi and use a .035 needle.
Mr Leveling thinner? Never used it! I wil try it - Thanks for share it.
I use that thinner with EVERY paint. It works so well. Thanks for watching, I appreciate your support 👍
Thanks @ScaleModelExperiment for the very useful tips, but what about REMOVING decals under clear coat? Would like to modify an existing model. Thank you.
Unfortunately, once they are sealed under clear the decals are finished. Strip the car and get another set. Thank you for watching👍
@@ScaleModelExperiment I just want to remove the decals and put in new ones, no need to keep the old decals, any recommendations on how to get to the decals under clear coat? Thanks again.
@@raykkho as far as I know if the decals are sealed under clear, you won’t be able to get them off. You could try applying tape to the model and rip it off, but no promises
@@ScaleModelExperiment thank you for taking the time out to reply ☺️
Great tutorial! One question, what psi did you use to spray the mist coat and then the other coats. ? Those decals are stunning!!! Thanks ,Al
Hi Al, I don’t change my pressure at all. I keep it at 20 all the time. I control the pressure by not pulling the trigger back as far. For the wetter coats I move slower and pull back a little further. I’ve been using the same gun for years so I know it by feel. Thanks for watching👍
Thanks for the help James. I just got a new airbrush, two stage . Have to practice a little more with it.
@@nitroAl67 absolutely 👍 buy a big box of plastic spoons and go to town figuring out distance speed and pull.
Ha! That’s exactly what I did..
Hi James. I am a recent subscriber to the Channel and I love your videos. For various reasons I don't use an airbrush and use rattle cans almost exclusively for finishing my models.I'm generally very happy with the finish I achieve, except where decals are concerned. Any aerosol clear lacquer I have used seems to react with the decals. Can you offer any advice ? Thanks, John
Hi John, welcome to the channel! The use of an airbrush allows more control of the pressure in which the paint is applied. I get a fine mist of clear from the airbrush that may prove difficult with a rattle can. What you can do is heat up your can of clear with a cup of very warm water and make sure that it is shaken properly. Apply many many thin coats instead of wet coats. The wet coats is what is ruining your decals. It’s the solvent pooling up on your decal and lifting it from the body. Another tip would be to ensure that your decals are adhered completely. Watch my video on “hate decals?” And make sure to let them dry for at least 24 hours before clear. I hope this helps and feel free to send questions.
Thanks James. Yeah, the wet coats are definitely the problem! Unfortunately, it’s hard to get a high gloss with the mist coats but it’s something I’m gonna keep working on. I’ve also found some lacquers are more aggressive than others. TS 13 can dissolve decals whereas Mr Super Clear is more decal friendly. Our hobby can be frustrating and rewarding in equal measures.😂
@user-ru4ox4ho1z absolutely John, I hope you figure out a method to get a good gloss with decals.
Was wondering if you can clear over decals I applied on my model car tires??? Thank you
I found out the hard way that you have to mount the tires to the rims first, mask the rims and then dull coat the decals on the tires. The clear cracked when I flexed the tires onto the rims.
I only have access to to spray cans like Mr Super Clear
Will lacquer clear melt the decal like some people say
Most likely it will. The problem with using a rattle can is the amount of product that sprays in a single area. If you can spray the clear in fine mist coats and not worry about the glossy leveling caused by too heavy of a coat then you will be fine using it.
@@ScaleModelExperiment Thanks you're like the only model kit channel to reply to this question of mine
@eatsleepplayrepeat My pleasure, good luck with your project.
Can I do bike tank wrap & then put clear coat /lacquer on top of it to make it last longer without damaging.?
I’m not sure if vinyl wrap and lacquer paint can be used together. Lacquer paint shrinks when it dries. It may lose adhesion to the vinyl. I use a 2 part clear that cures chemically and does not shrink or attack the surface it’s bonded to. Do more research to see what others use.
@@ScaleModelExperiment you mean lacquer & clear coat are different.?
@@KingBriju correct. Lacquer needs a solvent to evaporate to dry. The clear I use is a 2 part urethane which is a chemical reaction to dry/cure.
Hi can a jouse nuus paper on my car and clear coat it
I don’t think that would work.
How did you learn how to make decals?
I don’t make the decals, these ones came with the kit. I do have a friend that makes the decals for these cars if you are interested.
What pressure and nozzle size?
Hi Marco, around 25 psi with a .35 needle.
Have you used the Tamiya Clear Acrylic?
Hi John, I have both thinned with their thinner and with Mr Hobby leveling thinner. I have seen others use it with great results but I had less than desirable results with it so I didn’t try it again. It simply wouldn’t cure completely for me and ended up a mess when I tried to polish it.
@@ScaleModelExperiment I used it on one car. I didn't polish it. The Mr Color Leveling thinner was the trick for me to get a successful paint job with the acrylic. Thinned way out. 2/3 thinner to 1/3 paint.
@@johnmajane3731 the thinner is the magic part. I love that stuff!
Ok, but what is wrong when i spray TS-13 Clear coat?
Are you airbrushing it or applying it with a rattle can? I suspect you are applying too much too fast, it is attacking the decal.
@@ScaleModelExperiment i suspect the same. It is with a rattle can. I did put a carbon decal from tamiya and after 5 days of waiting i sprayed the body. It is the first time i encounter such a problem. Maybe i overdid it... I dont know. I saw some black paint from the carbon decal. Now what? I am thinking of painting it with a brush and then clear coat it again... What is your opinion?
@CRGR7 as long as the area is small you may be able to touch up the area and reapply clear.
@@ScaleModelExperiment thank you very much mr James. Yes it is a small area next to the front left light. I hope i wont make it worse than it is now...
@@CRGR7 good luck 👍
