I always assumed “omnibus” was for complete stories or roughly 1 man storyline, where ohcs can be a straight sequential collection. Marvel has not 100% adhered to that rule, so who friggin knows. I honestly don’t care so long as they’re oversized and matching in height

Recent examples include House of X and Immortal Hulk. Civil War was published like this so there is a ‘Civil War Omnibus’ from Marvel, but it’s a standard size TPB

Great overview! I've learned this through a few years of collecting collected editions, but it's great for people who are confused by all the different editions and just a nice reference point in general. OHCs are my preferred format as I feel like they balance out the best of both worlds. Slimmer and easy to read, yet not too slim and packaged in a prestige hardcover format. That said, there's something satisfying about finishing a giant omnibus, and something comforting about collecting/reading a run in TPBs. I'm actually conflicted on if I should buy the Dawn of X TPBs or wait for an omnibus, as I feel like there are benefits to both.
I’m really liking how OHCs are being made more and more. I love hardcovers and I don’t mind collecting runs in OHCs until an Omni is available. And then if there is no Omni well still have it oversized so no loss.

One of your next videos needsto be a tips, tricks, and suggestions for storing your collections. I have a very limited space and have resorted to having to stack some of my books horizontal alternating how they are stacked so spines aren't being damaged. If you could make a video on that it would be awesome.

Omar should do a favorites of Oversized hardcovers if omnibus's didnt exist. I only say that cuz i want to start collecting Hardcovers in general but i dont need omnibus's the size of dictionaries.
I’m a big fan of OHCs. Only because they are easier to handle. The only problem with them is collecting them when the go OOP and you’re missing one volume.
Feel you. I prefer the OHC's myself because of more comfortable reading. But it's really annyoing, when they discontinue releasing them, like they did with the DC Rebirth Deluxe Editions. It soooo bothers me when I have to continue a Story that i started with Deluxe Editions, now with Trades...

Strictly speaking, using the actual meaning of the word, pretty much any trade paperback or collected eidtion is a real omnibus. That's why publishers are free to use the word for any collected edition they want. Marvel and DC use it extensively for big high end books, but they didn't invent the word. (Nor do they have any authority to say what is the plural of the word either.) Feel free to ignore my nitpick, since... what do I know? English is my second language after all. Keep the good content, man. I love it.
Omnibus is Latin and means "of all", more freely translated "all-encompassing". So it SHOULD contain either a whole story OR - as several volumes - be planned to contain a whole story OR contain a run of a creative team or single creator OR another some such thematic cohesion. In german, an omnibus is a bus, meaning a people transportation vehicle "for all", so to speak.
Did not hear "thicker than a Snicker" and I won't lie, I was a smidge disappointed. 🤣 The Immortal Hulk omnibuses are also softcovers, I got bamboozled on that one.

It really is a preference as you put it about the book formats collectors or average readers want in their collection. My assumption of Omnibus were books had page counts over a 1000 pages at least. Some manga is not like that such as Samurai Executioner by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima. But it also fits what you describe as a series completion set. I don't own that many Omnibus mainly because of spacing issues more so than price which is also a factor. That's okay though. There's really not many I'm looking for in my collection anytime soon. If I don't miss out on DC's Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis like last time, those are really just it that I would really want. Thanks for the content as always, Omar.

The amount of restoration and love that go into the masterworks line is top tier. Which is why for years us omnibus collectors when they have new Masterworks, they do the heavy lifting to make way for the omnibus. I did ask, he said sometimes they like making books with no omnibus on the logo.
At 5:15 you talk about "direct market cover". What is that? And I'm still not clear on the difference you are talking about. What are you comparing here? Omnibus vs. direct market dust jacket?
All those books are pretty easy to store for the most part, but how do you store the XXL books that marvel makes? I recently got the Jim Lee one and couldn’t find a place for it so its just been leaning against a wall.
An OHC usually contains a story arc or 2. An omnibus collects Everything. If you had an infinity gauntlet OHC, It would have only the main series. Where the omnibus would have all the crossovers and lead up to it. Basically more content and you read everything related.
Im a bit OCD whenever i see my Fatal Attractions OHC spine next to my other X-Men omnis , seeing this video, i am this close to getting a customised dust jacket just so it will line up well with other Marvel omnis haha
I like omnibus( i own 5) and really like them but I slightly prefer OHC as they are easier to read while i struggle more with omnibus. I am getting more used to reading them but i find on the DC ones the first 50 pages or so hard to read as the book wants to shut on me(the grant Morrison batman ones.) after that they are good. The one thing the omnibus has that i love is tons of extras. The only format I haven't ever tried from is a compendium but would like to try some and hoping that DC bring some runs in that format that interest me. Definitely looking forward to getting venom by donny cates volume 2 soon.
Literally just a word on the spine or what the publisher arbitrarily labels the book. A billion books that don't follow the trends, like all the major Claremont/Lobdell X-Men OHCs, that Jenkins Hulk book, etc. Let alone publishers that use the word omnibus for paperbacks, like Dark Horse, Boom, and Dynamite. The word omnibus has a literal meaning and it has nothing specific to do with comic books, and the history of collected editions has barely built up a solid claim to an informal definition. Honestly annoys me how the community has in some ways gotten addicted to that word, where people are ignoring great runs because they aren't in their preferred format or specifically because they happen to not have a word on the spine. Or vice versa think its a little toxic to the market how people buy books primarily or even only because they have that word on the spine, despite having zero knowledge or even interest in the material, or even intention to ever read it. Though I do want to note that no one specific is to blame for these trends. Especially Omar, who collects in every format and has always been clear that the material within the book is the number one priority. /rant lol
Standard edition prices of omnibus’ in Canada seem to be jumping from $125 to $157 on average lately; maybe just be the content of the ones I’m looking at but seems to be across the board for new preorders... we desperately need a CGN in Canada

For the people in the back of the classroom .... All Marvel omnibus books are oversized hardcovers. Not all Marvel oversized hardcovers are omnibus books.
OMNIbus meaning it entails the complete, in this case story arcs, from storylines previously published. that's the ONLY reason why collected works should be called an omnibus. It has NOTHING to do with the dimentions of a book, only the FACT that it entails the completed works of a story. That cyclops phoenix wedding, is a snippit pulled from a greater story, that's why it isn't called an omnibus, the Devil Dinosaur, is called an omnibus BECAUSE THAT SERIES HAD A RUN OF 9 ISSUES!!! pretty obvious that the book isn't as thick as an X-MEN omnibus that has 15+ years ofstory in it.
I see the logic, but it doesn’t work. Mutant massacre was an OHC that told the complete story arc. Then they made it an omnibus to encompass more uncanny and X-factor issues to match up to the next OHC. Young avengers has all 13 issues of the original run and it’s an OHC. Young avengers omnibus collects the 18 issue arc by Gillen.
Omar I’m disappointed I watched this video for one comparison. I was waiting for when you compared a big OHC to an omnibus. I was expecting to see you bring out the x men fall of the mutants OHC and instead it was the wedding of cyclops and Phoenix. I really expected you to bring out that book especially with your love for it and how big it is. I never understood why that wasn’t an omnibus.
For the same reason Mutant Massacre, Inferno and X-tinction Agenda weren't. They just weren't doing that many omnibus back then. But this is different times.
I’d like Marvel to give their OHC’s better branding. I search DC Deluxe and can clearly see which is oversized. Searching Marvel OHC/Hardcover doesn’t give me as useful results.
They really need to rerelease the last omnibuses that came out. It's really nonsense. I preordered X men vol 3 it's out and I am waiting for it. Same for 100 bullets After seeing your video. It is so confusing when jumping in new. So far we know there are going to be OHCs of series like Maruaders and Excalibur, but no omnibus yet.

The simplest way I think of it is:
OHC: Size of an omni, but only twice the amount of issues a trade has.
Omni: BIG book, BIG number of issues.

One big argument FOR Trades in my opinion is, that they are all the same Size, so your collections looks very clean and organized.

Does the binding of thicker books wear down faster than thinner books?
I don't think any of mine have. Sometimes books just have bad binding in general.
Perhaps I missed it but, box sets... I know DC's are standard HC but what about Marvel's? Are the books in their Civil War box set for instance OHC's?

Standard edition prices of omnibus’ in Canada seem to be jumping from $125 to $157 on average lately; maybe just be the content of the ones I’m looking at but seems to be across the board for new preorders... we desperately need a CGN in Canada

I rather to collect Oversized HC than Omnis. OHC are easier to read in certain spots at home ☺️😉

That really goes book by book. Some OHCs have glued binding and rarely, some Omnibus do too.

OMNIbus meaning it entails the complete, in this case story arcs, from storylines previously published.
that's the ONLY reason why collected works should be called an omnibus. It has NOTHING to do with the dimentions of a book, only the FACT that it entails the completed works of a story.
That cyclops phoenix wedding, is a snippit pulled from a greater story, that's why it isn't called an omnibus,
the Devil Dinosaur, is called an omnibus BECAUSE THAT SERIES HAD A RUN OF 9 ISSUES!!! pretty obvious that the book isn't as thick as an X-MEN omnibus that has 15+ years ofstory in it.
I see the logic, but it doesn’t work. Mutant massacre was an OHC that told the complete story arc. Then they made it an omnibus to encompass more uncanny and X-factor issues to match up to the next OHC. Young avengers has all 13 issues of the original run and it’s an OHC. Young avengers omnibus collects the 18 issue arc by Gillen.
Omar I’m disappointed I watched this video for one comparison. I was waiting for when you compared a big OHC to an omnibus. I was expecting to see you bring out the x men fall of the mutants OHC and instead it was the wedding of cyclops and Phoenix. I really expected you to bring out that book especially with your love for it and how big it is. I never understood why that wasn’t an omnibus.
For the same reason Mutant Massacre, Inferno and X-tinction Agenda weren't. They just weren't doing that many omnibus back then. But this is different times.

I’d like Marvel to give their OHC’s better branding. I search DC Deluxe and can clearly see which is oversized. Searching Marvel OHC/Hardcover doesn’t give me as useful results.
I know it gets confusing, which is why I always remind people to check the dimensions.

They really need to rerelease the last omnibuses that came out. It's really nonsense. I preordered X men vol 3 it's out and I am waiting for it. Same for 100 bullets After seeing your video. It's not a available anymore...diamond s and other distributors need to give US New release dates or atleast announce something to let us know stocks are coming. Even if it tales weeks. I don’t know if it is an option for you, but Amazon just got Uncanny X Men vol 3 omnibus on Tuesday. It might not be the price you are looking for, but it is available there.
@@NMan40 I preordered from Amazon. Actually, Still waiting for Stock. Even though I ordered before the release date. But yeah Amazon is my only way. Or local comic book job. But its difficult for stores to get some omnibuses lately.
