    To avoid spoilers I recommend doing this technique with the book backwards. So when you’re slowing going through the pages, you’re getting looks at the art but nothing makes sense since it’s upside down lol

    I think dark horse's binding and page layout on the berserk deluxe is the gold standard for omnibus binding. In the double-page spreads, they usually have a millimeter of blank space from the middle to prevent any gutter loss.

      If you see other paperback oversized manga, like vagabond vizbig, you'll notice that they leave a white blank line in the inside, so if the binding is stiff, you still have the full art visible.

    This is a very good tutorial. As for the gutter issues with splash pages, it’s the fault of the layout artist/typesetter because that can be addressed in the preparation of the print file. (I work in publishing and printing and we encounter this a lot with new artists.)

    • @NearMintCondition
      @NearMintCondition  4 года назад +5

      Thank you so much for watching and the kind words. I think sometime the gutter loss is caused by over use of so much glue on the binding, but I'd love a little more Quality Control on some splash pages.

I know I've only began to scratch the surface of his run so I'm ready to be continuously in awe. I was so anxious to start reading so I'm coming to this video a week later to see how it's properly done lol. I still went through the process and the eye looks pretty good and nothing is shifted to one side which is relieving. Great video! I have a question regarding the ribbon in the spine. A new TTRPG book of mine (a beautiful hardback which I absolutely love) does not have a ribbon at all. It appears to just be glued together like a trade paperback inside of a hardcover. Yet it still has a really nice "eye" and flexes well as you open and flip through the book. You said in another video that most of the ribbons they make these days are purely for cosmetic effect, so does this mean that I can rest assured that my book is not merely glued, but is in fact sewn, and probably even sewn pretty well? Hi have you found any legitimate clear Polypropylene sleeve covers for TPBs (similar to book covers)? Not comic book bags. I've seen them for mangas. A method to cover them.

    Hey Omar, any tips on what to do if the pages start to pull away from the sewn binding? I just noticed this is happening towards the beginning of my Venomnibus vol.1 even though I stretched the spine when I first opened it. I know these things happen... just hoping I can save it before it gets even worse.

    • @NearMintCondition
      @NearMintCondition  4 года назад +2

      if its from the inner spine, I think you are okay. It's when the bunches all start to come undone, that's what happened to my Udon books. It's a mess.

    • @1ctcrawford
      @1ctcrawford 4 года назад +1

      @@NearMintCondition so it looks like the bunches are still together... but a section towards the bottom front of the spine is separating from the cloth part where the eye is... it seems like there was a air pocket in what looks like the cardboard paper and the ribbon itself. I pressed that back in and the separation looks better but still worried. Ha at least the pages aren’t coming out or the bunches separating.

    I would like to ask another question related to the right conservation of omnibus:
    I'm talking about the flattening of spine due to the weight of the pages,
    wich tend to bend in the middle of the volume when the thickness is huge.
    In this way the spine tend to become flat in the upper zone. Have you got some advice? Thank you!

    • @NearMintCondition
      @NearMintCondition  4 года назад

      The only advice I have is I've seen styrofoam blocks under the papers.

    Omar, this videos is brilliant. Since following your channel I've been increasing my HC and omnibus collection. What's your advice regarding the storage of these? Alot of forums say that over time the pages will drag on the spines when upright. Have you experienced this?

    • @NearMintCondition

      Thank you so much for the kind words. I haven't really experienced anything like that. I know some people have put styrofoam blocks to the bottom of their books in fear of that.
