Ive seen quite a few videos that show the limits of art restoration on this channel. I highly doubt any art would be unable to benefit in some degree from restoration.
So, this is the first time I'm watching Baumgartner Restoration without my mother, sadly she passed away on Christmas day. It feels so odd to watch it without her. Both me and her love this channel and enjoys both Julian and Kits enthusiasm about the work they are doing.
My own personal orphan - the son we adopted from a Romanian orphanage when he was six - was treated by Doctors Without Borders for strabismus. How I wish I could personally thank those brave doctors. Our son is now a successful outsider artist and fine young adult. I’ll pray your orphan raises lots of money to help such a worthy cause as Doctors Without Borders. Bless you, Julian!
Thank you! I worked with Doctors without Borders for 6 years as a trauma nurse. I learned more in those 6 years than I had in the previous 40 years of my life. I became a much better provider, a better human being and my perspective of the world and its peoples changed dramatically. We worked in horrible conditions sometimes, sometimes there was gunfire, sometimes the people were so kind and generous even when we could only communicate in gestures. Supporting their work is amazing!
I was sitting here watching this restoration thinking, "Huh, he's going in a different order than usual.". The reaction when he realized he jumped the gun a bit was entertaining.
In 1905, Evert Pieters moved to Katwijk aan Zee (The Netherlands), where he made a large number of beach scenes, often featuring shell fishermen and horses. I live in Katwijk aan Zee and read a lot about its historical riches. So too about many painters who came here to paint seascapes. Thank you for restoring this painting!
I have to say, before even finishing the video I was baffled when you said this was a painting no one really wanted. Even when you show the before state, I found it absolutely beautiful. After finishing watching, I have to say that I feel vindicated. It's absolutely stunning.
Unfortunately they won't last that long. PLA absorbs water from the air and the long polymer chains get hydrolyzed (broken down by the water) making it become super brittle over time. So eventually they will just crumble apart, that's the unfortunate reality of using bio based plastics.
@@isotope3234 He's got a Bambu Labs printer, so for sure he'd be able to print something in ABS instead, or maybe even polycarbonate. Even if the PLA takes a long time to become brittle, it will start creeping within the next year or two, maybe faster, being under tension. I don't know how much other plastics would off-gas, though, so I don't know the best archival-safe material. Perhaps PET (not PETG) might be a safe choice? Mylar is just a special form of PET, after all.
@@isotope3234 The biggest factor in PLA degrading isn't ambient humidity, it's UV and since these are behind the canvas and covered, the amount of UV they'll see is minimal if any at all. Certainly over a long enough timeline they'll fail but by then the painting will undoubtedly need another round of conservation and these can be replaced.
I cant believe this painting was unwanted. It's stunning, quiet, peaceful. Absolutely worth restoring and hanging somewhere where it will be appreciated
Well worth restoring! That artist conveyed a moody and dramatic scene and somehow made it stunning at the same time! Your restoration broke through that haze of time and awakened that piece.
I will never be in conservatory, yet after watching your talent amongst others, you would be my number 1 choise. You have proven that your talents and passion withstand no other. Keep up the vids and knowledge that very few of us will have. Appreciate it Julian
Julian, this is lovely of you. Your work is excellent as always, but it’s wonderful that you’re able and willing to donate your time and effort to saving a painting, and in turn using that to maybe help save some lives. I’d love to be able to participate, but alas, owning fine art is not something I’ll ever be in a position to do. But this is a beautiful way to add care and kindness to a world that sorely needs it, and I’m glad to see you doing it. Who knows, maybe you can make this a thing, and once a year a new painting can get restored and auctioned like this. It’d be a wonderful legacy to add.
Thank you for saving this beautiful work of art. It saddens me to think that someone would just throw something like this away when there are those of us who could never afford such magnificent art and would have taken it even in the in its pre restored state. Please keep doing what you do so well, it brings such joy to so many.
Thank you, Julian for saving this lovely painting. In a disposable world, a serene true work of art did not end up forgotten in a landfill. Your skill as a restorer is gift from above.
Not only does the auction winner get an awesome painting and the satisfaction of aiding a great cause, they also get a fully-documented Julien restoration - itself a work of art that may actually appreciate over time, like a classic car "that was once owned by so-and-so". That's quite a trifecta -- I wish I could afford to play.
I’m a local adjunct at a few community colleges- MFA from SAIC. I primarily teach printmaking and painting and am always fascinated by your pride in sharing traditional techniques, but also your willingness to experiment with new technology to become the best at what you do. I have been implementing self taught 3D printing and laser methods in my curriculum for 5 years or so and am always heartened to find examples of you doing the same in your videos. It’s my first time commenting since subscribing years ago, but thanks for the content!
Subscribed for a few months. After binging of numerous episodes, I have to say this is my favorite. This painting touches me somehow. Maybe my Dutch heritage. Maybe because I'm 70 and can see myself with a horse, alone on a lonely beach. Maybe it is the redemption of this painting, restored and auctioned to bless a worthy cause. Melancholy has taken hold...
I'm in awe not just at the restoration but the 3D printed keys. Patent them! Also US$3250 on current auction, this is a fantastic result already! Bernie in Sydney
I have a painting by Evert Pieters myself with a depiction of a horse in Rotterdam Harbour, therefore I immediately recognised the artist before he was mentioned by Julian. :-) And likewise, 'my' yellowish Pieters can use a new varnish for sure too! Thanks for reminding.
My daughter (6 years old) and I watch your restorations and she commented as we drove down the street and wound down her tinted car window “this is like when the paintings are revealed mummy.” Obviously we would love to buy this painting but the bids are already substantial and rightly so. Keep up this amazing work.
Julian, you are always the hero of rescueing and i love to come home after a long day of work and see your wonderful work. Thanks again for it. Greetings from a fan of yours from Germany.
Ah, A Dutch painting almost landed in the trash. Although, as a Dutchie I have never heard of this painter, I am glad it was saved . And It looks very beautiful now!
I recently watched a restoration of a painting and the V & A museum in England, and OMG they took shortcuts and no hot table, they restored in in frame!!! I was yelling at the video.
It is times like that when you need to contact the institution and offer your assistance. Presumably they do not have a fully trained art conservator on staff and so they need someone to educate their employees. In my country, at least, there are far too few professionals available to meet the demand. We need more experts.
If they did it was the best way for that painting at that moment. I have seen restorations in the V&A restoration department that went way further than i have seen on Julian’s channel.

I saw a painting in a local gallery that had recently came back from a conservator. There was a piece of cotton from the cleaning still on the painting. Weird!
Wonderful idea to auction off the painting. Had to have a little laugh to myself when Mr Baumgartner said he was going to do a 'belt and suspenders' job on the tear. We say belt and braces here in England. Such excellent work and definitely a miracle worker with paining restorations!!
I LOVE this painting! It's absolutely magical! I went to see the bidding, and unfortunately, it's already out of my range, but I want to thank you for saving it and donating to such a great cause! I know its new owner is going to adore it! 😍
I wish I had the funds to join the bid. Pieters has painted shell fishers on the beach of my hometown, so it carries a kind of nostalgia seeing this one get a new life.
What a beautiful idea to save a painting and people at the same time. I love that we get you watch you do your magic repairing it and then the proceeds going to benefit a great organization that puts their lives on the line helping people in desperate need. Thank you.
Step One: Save the painting. Step Two: Save the world. Yes, Julian, YES! I chatter occasionally about the impact your work has on world culture. Art shows us who we are and where we've been. It's vitally important to conserve these pieces, and I'm always so grateful to you for doing it right. And now I guess you're gonna save some lives in the process, LIKE THE HERO YOU ARE. I applaud your support of DWB, I've been donating to them for a few years now. Beautiful work. I really like the painting and would hang it on my wall.
What a wonderful gesture to a fantastic charity. MSF does amazing work and, seeing the horrific images reaching our screens over the last year or so of seriously maimed babies and children, I can't think of a better organisation to support.
What a difference a Julian makes. The dirt/varnish coming off the sky was Incredible, to me it did not look that bad, but I suppose my eyes are not what they used to be. Ive seen quite a few videos that show the limits of art restoration on this channel. I highly doubt any art would be unable to benefit in some degree from restoration.
Considering what museums can piece together and restore, I think it's more of a matter of cost/value than possibility.
Even if that is true, I'd still love to see some of the experiments
@@CoffeeCat322 Just about to say the exact same thing. You can build -restore anything if you have the money. It might take years but pay the price.
