Thank you everyone for the comments. I left out the Marvel Masterworks and DC Archives as they are the same size as the standard Hardcovers. That's why I don't even mention them in the video.
As a new collector, this was exactly what I needed. It’s so easy to get lost and intimidated by everything that’s out there. Thank you for making these seem like an accessible hobby!
I feel for this recently. I read batman the white knight - loved it so much, that rebought the deluxe hardcover edition. Same exact size. I thought it'd be bigger as it was a deluxe edition
OMG....Marvel is sending out staff to confiscate and destroy all the Annihilation Omnis so people will stop flexing on RUclips! That is huge news! Looking forward to a video on the epics, that’ll be cool.
I really like to make something special of the over-sized vs standard sized. I have only choose to collect Justice League/Society collected editions, standard series are standard sized hardcover, and events are oversized Omnibus. That way when I look at it all from a distance I can have a nice little timeline, each Omni/oversized book marking a little checkpoint that marks a end of a run/era and the start of a new one.
The 2nd version of Death & Return of Superman Omnibus is my "pink caddy" of collection. No Matrix Supergirl edited out, no annoying sticker like the 1st edition that is thick as can be of such an important story. The Batman writer or artist HCs are around 50 bucks ie Neal Adams, Don Newton, Gene Colan & Gerry Conway. The Usagi Yojimbo Saga non HCs are around 16- 17 bucks that collects 3 tpbs and is around 600 pages. Finally, Hellboy Library Editions are just as tall as DC Absolutes in case you were wondering. Peace!
Nice! Thanks for this. Here in Colombia is hard to get normal Comic books. However I went to my local book store and I was delighted there was a huge section of Marvel and DC comics but I got really confused while perousing the shelves. Now I realize that they bring comics in Trade paperback formats!.
Batman's reading order is a bit specific to the continuity. The 1986-2011 stuff has a pretty consistant and interesting order that I've been trying to collect but there's a tonne of stories that have fallen out of print and go for ridiculous prices online like Venom, Sword of Azrael, Anarky, Shaman, Snow etc.
@@RumRayven the problem I have with that reading order is also I would have to stick to just Batman and Detective, leave out runs like Shadow of the Bat, Legends of the Dark Knight and even limited series.. unless it's collected in a collection...so curse DC for not including Sword of Azrael in the Knightfall omnibus.
@@NearMintCondition Pretty much all of the pivotal Legends of the Dark Knight stories are still hard to get. Still it's fun to go from Year one through the Loeb/Sale trilogy > Death in the family > Knightfall > Contagion > Legacy > No Man's land > New Gotham > War games and finally the Grant Morrison run and end at The Black Mirror. Something approximating that is the best you're gonna get for consistency in that continuity with the current collections.
Thank you for this informative video. Now I have a better understanding of the difference between each collected editions. The high end books like the omnibuses and absolute editions, or the platinum editions that Marvel has are a bit more pricier than the others. Since I’m on a budget, I can only spend so much on comics, so I can afford to get the trade paperbacks, deluxe editions and the oversized deluxe editions. The other books, even though they look nice, are a little over my budget. It would be nice to have them, though. Maybe if I win the lottery then I could be able to afford them. Nonetheless, this was a great video and I’ll just get what I can afford for the time being. Thanks for the information, I’ll keep it in mind when I go comic book shopping.
Ahhh you are costing me so much money bro! Watching this channel has reignited my love for collecting trades and now Im in too deep thinking of what I need now compared to what I have, and whats coming out in the future. Right now Im SUPER torn on the Grant Morrison Batman Omnis. Definitely my favorite comic run of all time, but I have most of it in Deluxe Hardcover and even the Absolutes of Batman and Robin, and Batman Inc. BUT there is a few rouge hardcovers that were never released in Deluxe format. Namely the New 52 Batman Inc, and the trade featuring Batman 700 and everytime I see those on the shelf it bugs me lol
@@NearMintCondition lol you got me convinced! I think I'll get it from Instocktrades along with the Black Mirror Absolute. My wallet is crying but my shelves will look great
Maybe you could do a video on favorite books for art, favorites for story, or favorites of manga. Just an idea I think would be interesting, without having to do like a top 10 list cause everyone knows those can be hard to nail down. Thanks.
Thank you so much and the library editions are taller than your omnibus. Its exclusive to just Dark Horse, but I've seen Image release books in that same format and size. Just not Library on the title. :)
I would love for it to be an annihilation reprint, but I'ld also be so down for an Annihilation slipcase boxset like the Infinity Boxset. Having all of annihilation, conquest, and war of kings in one epic box!
I think my biggest thing was where the Marvel Complete Collections and the DC Essential(formerly) Collections fit in the format situation. The Epics seem to be mapped out past unreleased material where the Complete Collections seem to be fairly recent but oop/never released material. I use the Punisher Max line as an example. I got all of Garth Ennis' portion in Complete collection then shortly after the Complete Collections finished they announced omni's. Same with Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-Man. That got Complete Collections first then they released the Omni after. I know Dan Slott's Spider-Man has a number of Complete Collections and The Jason Aaron Thor just did the first Collection. If history is an indication once those are fully collected an Omni should come out right after. I'm not double dipping on the Punisher or MMUSM because at $52(cad) for each Complete Collection I'm just happier to spend my money elsewhere than to continually upgrade to an Omni. I'm not even going to speculate what DC was trying to do with their Essential line with everything going on in their collections department. Great video though and thank you for the info.
So for the Punisher Max I remember I decided to keep my OHCs and wait for the omnis to go on sale. I don't know why they decided to do that. For the most part Marvel finishes out their runs in collections they started, but DC... oh DC. Breaks my heart.
Awesome video, Omar! Clear and concise guidance about the nature of these various collections! As you know, I really like the Epic Collections (and I'm starting to enjoy the Omnis as well!) As for that little tidbit of news...it wouldn't happen to include any cool new Spider-Man collections, would it? ;)
Not sure if you had them over in the US, but in England we had some little marvel trades called pocket books which were really small, and like £7 for 7 issues.
Your comment about Annihilation gave me an idea. How about a top 20 Omnis that are oop/whales? Annihilation is impossible to find at a reasonable price!
Anyone can do a custom bind. It's probably the easiest part of collected editions to put together. The hard part is rounding up the issues to put together. I think I will make a video of how to go about doing it. :)
i've started to make sense of the crazy comic world, thanks to your videos and help of google. however there is one thing i cant find an answer to anywhere, what exactly gets a hardcover? is it all tpbs? only certain tpbs? or is it something completely different from a tpb and also different from something like the epic collection?
I think my favorite format is that double sized trade paperback with 8-16 issues in it. I'm really into the Vertigo and proto-Vertigo (ie Swamp Thing) stuff, and that's how a lot of the reprints of their stuff has come. I've been calling it the Book format since most of the stuff has been labeled as "Book #." It gives you more stuff than a standard trade without being as expensive or difficult to read as an omni and fits on the shelves I have better than deluxe hardcover stuff
Although my collector brain loves the idea of omnis, these just make the most sense for someone who tries to read everything he owns, has limited shelf space, and doesn't want to completely kill his wallet
Great video on hardcover and trade paperback but I would like to have seen more of what the ominous collects, does it collect everything, does it have just a character run or everything a certain writer has written...you kinda did for the standards but not the ominous's or premiums....

Could you possibly explain why marvel doesn’t reprint most of their omnibus’s and what it takes for them too do it. I just don’t get their business practices. DC has a foot hold when it comes to reprinting.
Hey man, how do you stay informed on what’s being reprinted in Marvel? Just recently started collecting some epic collections and saw that some were out of print
ConnorPlaysGames101 I really use the catalogs to put together a spreadsheet of upcoming collections. However, Marvel was kind enough to reach out to me and are giving me inside information and when I can announce it on the channel. :)
@@NearMintCondition sorry for the miss spelling didn't notice it till now but now I might get into it, I always like stories were the original heroes turn evil, makes it a more interesting read.
@@NearMintCondition yep it's currently out of print, unless you know something I don't 😂 Silver Surfer Dan Slott seems to be the most recent addition to the OOP pile
Idk if I'm a plebeian but I find omnibus too cumbersome and annoying for actual reading purposes. Like I read the story in various single issues and trades and then once an arc or storyline gets finsihed I'll replace em with an omnibus or absolute, so that whenever I want to read em again I don't have to but 15 different books.
I do use another company, but all the prep work I have to do myself. I really thought about making a video on this process when I get back into custom binding books.

Besides omnibus' Complete Collection and the Marvel Epics are the best imo. Love oversized HC but they always have my shelf uneven if you know what I mean
I am the same, but I love those Marvel Epic Collections.
Could you possibly explain why marvel doesn’t reprint most of their omnibus’s and what it takes for them too do it. I just don’t get their business practices. DC has a foot hold when it comes to reprinting.
I actually can go into detail about that so I would love to.
Thank you I would appreciate that.
I want that Annihilation!
It's coming, my dood!
Waht edition of comics should I collect not spending to much money?
Marvel Epics for the classic stuff and tpbs for modern books.
@Near Mint Condition, in the Jack Ryder green lantern books, does the books start off with hal jordon going insane or is it later on in the series ?
Did you mean the Geoff Johns' omnibus? That kicks off with Green Lantern Rebirth.
@@NearMintCondition the comic book I was talking about was the Jack Ryder volume one comic that you were saying was canceled before you could order
oh the Kyle Rayner book. Yes it starts with Emerald Twilight where Hal Jordan goes crazy and later turns into the Paralax.
@@NearMintCondition sorry for the miss spelling didn't notice it till now but now I might get into it, I always like stories were the original heroes turn evil, makes it a more interesting read.
@@lucasscavo7209 Don't worry about the spelling. I'm terrible at it. :) I'm glad I was able to answer your question.
Are the stories in hardcovers; also in trade paperbacks?
For the most part, but each is different.
Is DC deluxe hardcovers the same as oversized hardcovers? I was looking at getting crisis on infinite earths deluxe hardcovers but was unsure of size.
They are.
@@NearMintCondition thanks
Can you do a tour of your manga collection?
I promise that I will do that soon.
Was about to spend €120 on Annihilation Conquest Omni but Omar's got me in a tizzy checking all the forums can't find any info on a reprint 😨😓😰😫🤢🤮😱👼🧟
Is Conquest out of print too? I really need to update my list of OOP omnis before I make a video.
@@NearMintCondition yep it's currently out of print, unless you know something I don't 😂 Silver Surfer Dan Slott seems to be the most recent addition to the OOP pile
What about the Dark Horse's library editions? Where does it fit in, is it the same dimensions as an omnibus? Thank you!
No it's not, they are taller. I left those out to only focus on the DC and Marvel books.
@@NearMintCondition Thank you! Love your content!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words. :)
You should have named this video
😂😂COLLECTORS EDITION:THE NAME OF THE GAME😂😂
I do like that title! Next time. :)
Hey Omar, quick question:
You mention that you will bind some of your own books. What's your process for this? Do you use an outside company?
I do use another company, but all the prep work I have to do myself. I really thought about making a video on this process when I get back into custom binding books.
I would be very interested in it, should you decide to do so. I collect almost exclusively TPB but have toyed with the idea of binding a few 'Events' or 'runs' my own.
10:06😉
I promise to announce something as early as tomorrow.
How do you custom bind books
It's a long tedious process. Collect the books, take out ads, put them in order and send them to the bindery. Design the covers and table of contents.
I’ll just now getting into comics n I’ve been watching all of your videos learning all I can
Sounds like you are trying to not say that Annihilation will be getting a reprinting soon.
I'm trying to not say anything and hint at something at the same time. ;)
1:20 I thought one shot refers to a single issue, not a single collection. Wouldn't it be called a limited series instead?
Andrew Glynn it is Omar made a mistake, because surprisingly he is human and not a God like we all think he is.
@@benjones8276 That's kinda what I figured, just wanted to double check. Thanks!
My boy Ben is right. :) It was a limited series and the slip of the tongue on my part.
I have 1 trade one omnibus and one single there all spiderman
On my channel I have a video about comic book maintenance... What do you think about graphic short boxes?
I'll go check it out.

Lol we don’t talk about those anymore :)
They’re probably going to reprint them.
warmer...warmer.
@@NearMintCondition one giant Omni covering both Annihilation omni's?
Stuart Morris nobody would be able to hold that thing up. So now we are back to colder :)
@@NearMintCondition Ok, so now the forums are starting to talk about this video and Annihilation Omnibus reprints... A lot of peoples hopes are going up now. Just sayin'.
@@J0NNYBOY I promise that lots of people will be happy. Well, maybe not the flippers, but it's not about them. ;)
I wish Manga had better nicer editions. Like American comics do.
I know Full Metal Alchemist and Berserk are both getting new editions currently, but I get what you mean.
Daw I would love hardbacks collector editions for a lot more though
As Daw stated earlier, some manga does get this kind of love. Like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Berserk, FMA and a few others. But it's more for superhero comics to be collected this way.
Daw I’m collecting the FMA hardcover editions and damn they are awesome
@@WoodysPickle Two per volume, right?
You didn’t even go into what absolutes collect that other versions don’t. All the extras.
Proto Plasma I tried to keep it simple. But i can focus more on Absolutes later
