Whew!! I'm so glad my boyfriend got me into watching Ramsey. I am 21, 3k in debt, making 30k a year and was thinking about buying a new car for the heck of it. Truly, I am so glad that I took my boyfriend's advice and started listening to Ramsey. It depends how long you are okay with delaying gratification - if I have 20k, and I could buy a car for 20k then I have 2 options:
      1. Buy it now
      2. Invest the 20k, buy it later
If later is just 1 year later, and I can invest at 5% annually, and because I waited, I saved 1 year in registration/petrol/damages/etc, lets assume that all adds up to $900:
In 1 year I will have a Car + $100 (5% on 20k) + $900 (running costs). That $1000 is like a life-time cash-flow compared to buying the car now, because I can invest that $1000 EVERY year forever until the day I die. In 30 years, that decision to wait 1 year will save me $1000 * (1.05)^30 = $4322. This is actually 21.6% of the car value for waiting just one year!

@0 views don't have to live by that logic to the letter. Point is want new tv. Buy what you can afford or wait and save until you can afford the tv you want. That pretty much applies to most basic things.
The way I look at it is by paying cash you learn self control and also if you want into a store with $500 and walk out with $50 in your wallet is much different that putting 450 on your card.

    • @---cr8nw
      @---cr8nw 4 года назад +3

If you want the luxuries of a 50,000 car, put them in yourself. I just installed heated seats in my wife's car. The kit for two seats was $50 on Amazon. A sunroof kit is about $250. An offbrand sawzall is about $30. Leather seat covers are $60 - $400, depending on what you want. An aftermarket radio and speakers is going to be $100 - $200, not including subwoofer and amp.
Take a $2,000 car, add $500 worth of these features (at the low end of the price scales) and you'll feel like you're riding in the lap of luxury. If it keeps you out of a $500 car payment for just a half a year, it'll have paid for itself.
