Well this takes me back. My best story with this game was 15 years ago when I was in College, I was working retail. There was a lot of down time and it was Just me and one other co-worker. A single mother, so we had a lot of time just to talk and and she understand I was a gaming nerd. Her sons birthday was coming up and she was locking for a gift that was affordable to her. I recommend this, It had just had a re-released as part of the X-Box and PS2 greatest hits so the price was down. She liked how I described the game and got it for her son. The next week she was glowing with praise. It was a massive hit at her sons party, and her son and his friends they played it all weekend.
Got this game Christmas 2004 and I absolutely loved it, I still play it to this day and I still think nearly 18 years on Burnout 3 is one of the best looking games I’ve ever played and one of the best racers I’ve played, period
@@Dregomz02 if you press F9 while on the menus in Burnout 3, it'll go into Software Mode. Then, after entering an event, press F9 again and it'll go back into Hardware mode, and you'll have a sky!
Man, my favorite thing to do in this game was to see how many takedown I could get in the Road Rage mode before finally dying (you only have health in this mode). I think I managed to get something like 50 or 60 playing on the first level. Probably put like 200 hours into this game alone. Got all gold medals, but only got halfway through the Crash mode because I was goofing off too much in the earlier levels.
Let's be honest, this game still put tears into my eyes. I love it so much from my childhood as it was one of best games on PS2. And that's PS2 - a console that had Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, God of War, Ratchet & Clank and many others. I don't know what to say about it. At least not that much.
Criterion delivered one superb game, I can't believe this is 20 year old title, Burnout 3 Takedown was produced in the days when DLC wasn't a thing and it was fantastic. Developers aren't inclined to release games like Burnout any more.
My short takes: Burnout 1 Never played. Burnout 2 Favourite execution of the boost-mechanic and some of my favourite tracks. There's a nice sense of speed to the driving, the soundtrack is fun and the crash mode is pretty neat despite lacking control. Unfortunately the championship feels like it drags on as it goes on. Burnout 3 Probably the one with the least amount of issues overall. The road rage mode is pretty addictive, career progression is pretty well done and the added features to the crash mode makes it feel pretty different from 2. Burnout Legends PSP Having longass races from Burnout 1 show up in the championship for the slowest vehicle classes was a dick move. The career progression in general feels like it has worse pacing than it did in Burnout 3. Other than that, a solid handheld version of Burnout 3's gameplay with Burnout 1 and 2 content mixed in. Dunno why the Japanese Muscle has the livery from the Custom Muscle though. Burnout Revenge The sense of car battling is at its best here. The tracks too have so much going on and the Crash Mode will never again be this good. Unfortunately the game lacks a car class system, so the moment you unlock faster vehicles, your opponents will only keep using those. And there is no custom single player mode. Like what the hell? Hearing Apocalyptica in a Burnout game was mindblowing for a Finn like me. Burnout Dominator The little I've played of it felt sort of... tired. Like they were running out of ideas, and it somehow couldn't replicate that visceral feeling Revenge had. Also why the hell is every single version of Girlfriend on this soundtrack? Burnout Paradise That damage model is amazing, the way the cars are divided into different boost classes is wonderful, the map is a great playground, and the fact that the game contains the original Burnout soundtracks including the unused Burnout 3 soundtrack is pretty damn great. ... The career progression sucks though. You just end up doing the same things over and over again, with very little sense of variety because for some reason no event has checkpoints in races, which means almost no race event encourages map exploration. Just find the mos efficient path and that's that, there's no reason to do anything else, which feels like an insult towards how great the map itself is. They should've ripped off how Midnight Club handles race checkpoints so the events themself would make the player explore the map more.
Burnout 1: Never played Burnout 2: played a little but also liked the boost system and the cop chase? were also awesome :) Burnout 3: same Burnout Legends: same Burnout Revenge: the rating system (stars) always annoy me but i liked the locations, car class were missing and the crash mode had the wierd boost start system and the air control which i think was cool Burnout Dominator: was made by a diffrent studio because Criterion Games wanted more time for Paradise i also never finished it back in the day but came back to it a few months ago and i can tell you the later maniac, near miss events are some of the most interesting events i played
Maniac mode was the highlight of Dominator in my opinion. To get the maximum amount of points you had to hold the supercharge boost for as long as you can while driving dangerously to recharge your boost and get a chain multiplier, all without crashing with upcoming traffic as you drift through corners at 200+mph. Last maniac race was one of the most challenging things I've ever done in an arcade racing game.
Your channel really takes me back to my youth 15 - 23 ish.. Many of these type. Of ps2 era games are ignored by the companies now mostly because of the licenced soundtracks so it's nice to see someone spotlight them... If I can make a suggestion you should get around to the True Crime series and the Def Jam series, true underground classics of the time
I didnt have a copy of this till recently, but i rented this at times as a kid, and i have revenge, and revenge brought what takedown did and turned it up further! I love the burnout series and im excited to see your take on revenge! Great review as always!
@@Yaz27 true yes, but it definitely could create alot of destruction, also made takedowns alot easier, so im kinda on the fence about it, but i love both of these games!
@@Yaz27 It might take the risk off of crashing into traffic, but in a way it puts you on the edge as well, as you keep your eyes peeled to vehicles you need to evade (trucks, buses, etc.), while at the same time it allows Criterion to increase the amount of traffic on the screen as well. Totally not an argument stolen completely off of Raycevick's Burnout video of course.
I thought the crash distances started to get toned down with Revenge. Crunchier, yes, but the distance of 3 was more fun. Felt the same way about Paradise.
I remember playing this game during my first christmas season job. My brother, my cousin, my cousin's friend and I, literally overslept a full week playing it. we get home after work and started playing to relief some stress and boy did it achieve it. Awesome video btw, glad you got to experience this absolute masterpiece of a game.
This is a good case of its not nostalgia. I just grabbed this for my PCSX2 and my god it is a TIME CAPSULE of mid 2000s. the music, the crash FM dude, the cars and vibes. and its FUN. the first track i had just a smile on my face when the controls started to click for me. the speed and how smooth the controls are with how precise it is to make near misses etc. and the different modes. this is just a good game. and it really reminds me of how gaming was still about just fun. If I had found this as a kid I could easily see myself having a BLAST with this game.
Great review of this timeless masterpiece! Completed it 100%, so this made for a nice nostalgia trip. Now, I'd like to point out that your videos will be much better if you let the gameplay roll for longer than two seconds at a time, as it is very unsatisfying to look at constant cuts.

Madden 05 had a demo of this in the extras, I played it more than Madden itself. I never owned the full game
It blew my mind finding the demo to this game when I played NFS U2. It immediately made me decide to buy it as my next game when I was allowed to get one as a kid. Then it was funnier when I found out Burnout 3 had a NFS U2 demo in that game
@@terminhaider9695 I think Burnout 3 had a demo of NFSU2, too.
I love the soundtrack for this game, gives you that early 2000's feel. So much nostalgia.
This is the greatest video game that will never be remastered, and my personal favorite video game of all time.
Yes! CSP my man! Im so glad this made your top 15 games of all time!! This review was awesome. I should also mention that the rubberband system in a race switches off during the 3/4 mark if you are in first place. :)

Fun fact: The Technical Director for Burnout 3 is Sean Murray.
Yes, *that* Sean Murray. The "No Man's Sky" Sean Murray.
IMO this game had the best handling model of the series, I only wish you got a bit more boost for non-takedown driving feets.
Cant wait to see him do Revenge. My personal fav of the series.
Freaking loved this game when i had it, now i have to wait for my graphics card to come in so i can actually emulate it at an acceptable fps.
good luck with that since you can't fix black sky bug, not a single fix exist i have tried everything trust me
@@Dregomz02 if you press F9 while on the menus in Burnout 3, it'll go into Software Mode.
I just hope someone can request Ace Combat the entire series.

Part of my love for Burnout is the soundtrack that to this day, I have it in my computer which brings back so many memories!
But after playing it in 2019, I can finally understand why made my heart leap out of my chest in excitement. Yes lord! I adore this game so much
Criterion delivered one superb game, I can't believe this is 20 year old title, Burnout 3 Takedown was produced in the days when DLC wasn't a thing and it was fantastic. Developers aren't inclined to release games like Burnout any more.
My short takes:
Burnout 1
Never played.
Burnout 2
Favourite execution of the boost-mechanic and some of my favourite tracks. There's a nice sense of speed to the driving, the soundtrack is fun and the crash mode is pretty neat despite lacking control. Unfortunately the championship feels like it drags on as it goes on.
Burnout 3
Probably the one with the least amount of issues overall. The road rage mode is pretty addictive, career progression is pretty well done and the added features to the crash mode makes it feel pretty different from 2.
Burnout Legends PSP
Having longass races from Burnout 1 show up in the championship for the slowest vehicle classes was a dick move. The career progression in general feels like it has worse pacing than it did in Burnout 3. Other than that, a solid handheld version of Burnout 3's gameplay with Burnout 1 and 2 content mixed in. Dunno why the Japanese Muscle has the livery from the Custom Muscle though.
Burnout Revenge
The sense of car battling is at its best here.
Burnout Dominator
The little I've played of it felt sort of... tired. Like they were running out of ideas, and it somehow couldn't replicate that visceral feeling Revenge had. Also why the hell is every single version of Girlfriend on this soundtrack?
Burnout Paradise
That damage model is amazing, the way the cars are divided into different boost classes is wonderful, the map is a great playground, and the fact that the game contains the original Burnout soundtracks including the unused Burnout 3 soundtrack is pretty damn great. They should've ripped off how Midnight Club handles race checkpoints so the events themself would make the player explore the map more.
you made me remember dominator has every version of girlfriend in it's soundtrack and i don't know how to feel about that
Burnout 1: Never played
Burnout 2: played a little but also liked the boost system and the cop chase? were also awesome :)
Burnout 3: same
Burnout Legends: same
Burnout Revenge: the rating system (stars) always annoy me but i liked the locations, car class were missing and the crash mode had the wierd boost start system and the air control which i think was cool
Burnout Dominator: was made by a diffrent studio because Criterion Games wanted more time for Paradise
i also never finished it back in the day but came back to it a few months ago and i can tell you the later maniac, near miss events are some of the most interesting events i played
Do not forget the unloved child: Burnout DS.
@@Vixen1525 wasn't this just legends?

Your channel really takes me back to my youth 15 - 23 ish.. Many of these type. Of ps2 era games are ignored by the companies now mostly because of the licenced soundtracks so it's nice to see someone spotlight them... If I can make a suggestion you should get around to the True Crime series and the Def Jam series, true underground classics of the time
I didnt have a copy of this till recently, but i rented this at times as a kid, and i have revenge, and revenge brought what takedown did and turned it up further! I love the burnout series and im excited to see your take on revenge! Great review as always!
But there is a big downside to it tbh, the traffic checking system. Really ruined alot of the tension you had in races
It is, as you say, an instant master piece. One unforgettable game and a must in every ones collection. Kudos for this review!!!
To this day, this is my favorite racing game of all time
This game is legendary. I'm glad people are checking it out even now because this game truly deserves more attention. Growing up playing this game felt epic and now, even as an adult, it still feels so fucking awesome to play. If you haven't played this game, you absolutely MUST, especially if you like racing games. Awesome video btw, glad you got to experience this absolute masterpiece of a game.
I loved this game, simpler times, gone but not forgotten.
I can remember playing this game with neighbor on his PS2...
Is there any chance that Driver San Francisco is coming as an review ? I love(d) this game and you should give it a try at least. It would be so nice to see it on your channel...

Amazing review, really captured what I felt playing it in 2004!
I was lucky enough to play this one as my 1st Burnout game and it really impressed me. Now I just bought a PS2 again and I'm playing it from the start, feeling the same amazing sensations from 17 years ago. The soundtrack changed a lot my music taste at the time and I still listen to it from time to time.

I played burnout 1, 2, and Paradise. Looks like I missed something good in burnout 3. Great video.
3, Revenge and Paradise are all really good. I'm a sucker for 2 as well. 1 is the only one that has aged poorly.
You missed THE Game of the series. 3 is when it took off and is really the best of the bunch
I don't even like racing games but Burnout 3: Takedown is one of those where, as you've said, I have to force myself to stop playing it. It's just too damn fun. The devs should be proud of themselves.
