After going back and forth between this 98” TCL S5 & the 85” Sony X90L… I had decided to buy the TCL a week ago just as Amazon raised the price to $2,498 from $1,998. And so I justified going with the Sony instead because of the $500 increase but I paused. I was BUMMED. Then… as I was about to to hit Buy Now, I checked again “just in case” and Voila! The TCL came back down to $1,998. I wasn’t about to let that go again so I bought it this morning! MUCH thanks to your review. Looking forward to enjoying this in our new home! Great work on these reviews. My wife and I really appreciate it!
Thats my same exact dilema at the moment, the 85" x90l or the TCL 98" S5. how is the upscaling on the TCL? its the only issue holding me back from pulling the trigger.

Awesome~ I am about to hit buy as well for $1,999. It feels like a great deal. and it literally is about 40% more screen than a 86 incher. I hope you enjoy yours.
Hey it’s nitpicky but yet for the record folks are mislead about the backlighting of todays LCDs. Full-array-local-dimming requires direct-lighting. 2 major categories of backlighting exist: Edge-lit & direct-lit. All FALD require direct lit(lights cover behind the screen). Local dimming on edge lit would be difficult and rather ineffective. All mini-LEDs(not to be confused w/ micro-LED which is not LCD based) utilize FALD. I feel reviewers should not confuse these things. The masses are already confused enough by referring to LCD TVs as LEDs. First gen LCDs used fluorescent backlighting, since then it’s LED. Plasma & OLED are self-lit.
When they can mass produce 110"-120", that will ultimately fill the standard 8' wall. I keep looking at UST projectors, but with the 98-100" currently, TV > projector.
Yeah, we came from the projector world (had 3000€ 4k optoma on darkened 130" frame) in the last apartment but couldn't fit it to the new home theater room. With the throwing range I would have needed to opt for short throw to fill the wall. However I decided to go with this 100" tv as you can even bring it closer with the tv stand if you need. Man, after weeks later I'm still blown away. I have used projectors for over a decade and my brain can't handle the fact that the screen so big can look so good. The brightness, contrast ratios, vivid colors are something else on tvs even in full dark rooms. Going to the theaters would be an downgrade. Kudos for TCL and pushing these TVs out for the masses, Really putting the projector world on tough spot, if you don't need over 120" screens.
This TV is amazing. It replaced an 82" Samsung Q6 QLED from 2018 and it blows the Samsung away in every way possible. I was worried about picture quality since it is direct lit LED and the Sammy was edge lit QLED with local dimming but there is no comparison. It gets very bright, colors are amazing, blacks are black and whites are white and not dirty. I am not regretting this purchase at all and it is a steal even after it went back up in price after the holidays. If you're on the fence about it just get it, you wont regret it.
We haven’t noticed any glare. The room it’s in has multiple windows on all the walls and when we watch it during the daytime it has never been an issue. Hope this helps. Was an amazing buy when we got it for $2500 and I think I saw it for $2000 the other week which makes it a steal!
Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. I have it in my cart at Best Buy for $1,999. I just need to convince myself that I won’t be sacrificing any picture quality getting this one versus the smaller 85” TCL QM8 with the mini LEDs.
I was just like you, debating if it would be a downgrade from my Samsung QLED. I can tell you I have no regrets and would do it again in a heartbeat and at 2k it’s a steal!
This is a good 120hz gaming TV. Most of the special video functions are disabled in Low latency PC mode anyhow. Next summer these may be down to $1999.
Been looking for a good, affordable upgrade and I think I've found it with this one. I have an 86 inch LG and want a 98 inch but the prices have been outrageous
Came home from work to see my neighbor had upgraded to a 85 inch with the empty box on the curb. I have a 70-inch. I'm looking forward to seeing his face when he sees my 98 inch box on the curb next week.😅
Thank you for the review! I have been looking at this one, but because it was so new, there was no real reviews on it. The only question I have is: I have a 85" Sony X900H and while I love this TV, I have noticed quite a bit of blooming around subtitles, which is kind of jarring in really dark scenes. How is the blooming on this one?
I have a 32” TCL. It’s not bad but the one I had before which was Japanese and more than 20 yrs old had a much better picture quality. Back in the day when Japanese products were the best.
These reviews have been great. Plan on doing a head to head between this tv and the 98” 754? Looking to buy one of these in the next few weeks. Which would you recommend?
Fantastic review. Thank you. I'm looking to put this in a classroom. The classroom has many large-scale windows along the entire Western wall, from floor to ceiling. So as the day progresses, the sun starts to pour directly into the room, and at certain angles, viewers have the sun over their shoulders pouring directly on the only available wall we have for the TV. We are trying to avoid a projector (given a TV provides a better image, not considering direct sun glare) or expensive sun-blocking shades, as this is a large room, and replacing our semi-permeable shades with sun-blocking shades would cost a lot. I also realize that nothing on the market is going to be able to block direct sunlight, but I'm wondering if you think viewers will be able to see this TV relatively well when considering how well it handles glare and, combined with increasing the sharpness of the image?
This is what I’m looking for. Would love if they did a head to head. At $3500 I may get the 754, but probably not worth it at $4000. It may depend on which one goes back on sale first.
The fact they put the ports on the back like that on a tv that big is criminal, I move my sound bars and consoles a lot so mounting it flush would be a nightmare for me, wish it was on the side

In case nobody has noticed, every TV they “review” is a buy if it fits your budget or video quality wish list. They will almost always suggest other models as options as cover. They do not release videos on TV’s they don’t like. Almost all electronics review channels have the same philosophy. I can’t recall one video out of a couple hundred videos over the last year from a variety of channels in which “this TV is no good” or “don’t buy this TV” was uttered. So basically if you see your TV or a TV you are interested in being “reviewed” then you can feel good about your selection.
Hold up now, I care a little. Lol my wife will turn off a $30k stereo system with perfect freq response to purposefully listen to the TV's audio, so on the rare occasion when we're using this setup together I'd like the TV speakers to be at least a tiny bit decent :p. All they have to do is slap a medium size full range driver on it and dsp for a decent flat target listening response up to 70dB with an attempt to keep the bass in tow, using up the speaker or little amp's headroom early for quality low/mid volume listening. It can't cost that much.
@@BobFrostV Isn't your speaker system wired up through HDMI CEC and work seamlessly through your TV remote? I am just wondering how even she feels like listening to TV audio. But then, I don't have a wife..I've heard they can be tricky 😂😂
@@supriyasou3722 My guess is there are some folks that mainly just want to hear the dialogue clearly without all the extra bass and noise. Even my Bose with the dialogue boost on isn’t the clearest unless you turn it up pretty loud. It doesn’t really bother me but when my Mom visits I have to crank it for her to be able to hear the dialogue. “Turn it up, I can’t hear what they’re saying!” - Mom 😂

People, if you want a TV, I would not wait until December to get it, they are selling out left and right. All brands. Big TVs. I don’t know if these TV makers didn’t make that many or what. But if you wait until December, then your chances of getting a big TV is going to get close to zero if not zero already
It's a 120lbs ish so not particularly heavy. Should be no issues wall mounting. But consider articulating vs static mount since the size is indeed enormous. I got an articulating mount but I'm not comfortable moving it so will likely just live with the poor off axis picture when viewing from the dining table
Thank you. Very helpful. For us daring souls that want to wall mount 98 inch TVs, for your future reviews, maybe you can spend 30 seconds showing the cable management in the back and how clean the wall mounted TVs look when viewing the TV from the side? Unlike your setup, people entering my family room can see the side of my wall mounted TV.
So here’s a question 77 lg c2 oled or this 98” s5 ? I’ve had the oled for a year and am afraid I’ll notice the difference at this point What do you think
Hi Brian, when you doing your 98” tv shoot out, I’m looking for one of these TVs, but being I am from the uk we have also the TCL X955 not sure where this tv sits against the Qm8, or if just renamed for the uk thanks Oz
Ok first,LED is not for 4k signal it's used in 720 enhanced definition,so that tv might produce 1080 on a good day,4k starts at qled, and up,all this is is a trinitron put onto a flat screen.People will see a difference because people will test with old content but the lights will shine because it doesn't have array dimming and it's LED,not QLED
Hey Brandon, I am looking to buy a 98" TV, I really want to know your opinion if you think the TCL S5 98" might look better than the Samsung Q80C 98", which one would you pick?
The price makes this one mighty tempting for the home theater/gaming room. My concern is whether the screen will hold up over the years though. I have an 82" Samsung from 2017 that looks as good today, as it did when it was new. Does this have Gsync or VRR for gaming?
@@metalstar01 Can't find much info for the US 98S550G model, neither displayspecifications nor the TCL US website state the panel brightness. I got my TV in over the weekend and I’m having a hard time getting RUclips TV to look good from my apple TV on it. Any advice on settings from anyone???
It's an LED TV without dimming zones so it's not going to he OLED quality. If that is more important than blooming of an LED like an x90l or something similar, than get a FALD LED. I think this at 98" for the price is good. Try the hisense u8k or u76k 100"
I was planning on getting the 85" QM8 QLED tv for $1,750, and now they have this 98" S5 LED tv for $1,999. I know the QM8 has 2,000 nits, but how much dimmer is the S5, and how much does 100" vs. 85" difference make?
I would definitely get the 98" S5. I didn't notice much difference in brightness unless full screen and the QM8 does suppress highlights in darker scenes to get the higher contrast. I don't even like the 98" QM8 better than the S5.

@@supriyasou3722
My guess is there are some folks that mainly just want to hear the dialogue clearly without all the extra bass and noise.
I do
I mean yea at this size and price of a tv im just saying fuck it and buying a whole surround system, they coulda put the extra r&d into at least some dimming zones instead
awesome review... I love your TV stand. where did you get it ?
Mr Installer Im down to the G3 or the QN95C. I got to this through your pick your tv guide and videos.
Im in a bright environment and love watching sky/cable shows and movies and gaming. Which one?
Either one I think ..
Which size? The g3 is amazing. The 83" doesn't have MLA. I'm not a big QLED fan for my main TV. I always see blooming and DSE.. oled or bust for me
@@BTheInstaller so when u say oled is a bust for u that means u like the OLED better for u? I wanna check out the G3 in person because BB & Costco don’t have them on the floor.. Sucks !!! Lol 😂
@@BTheInstaller Thankyou buddy. 55 inch. I may go G3!!
Is the remote backlit?
I just ordered this during the recent sale at Best Buy. What type of TV stands are you using for this monster?
Awesome guys. I love ❣️😘 how you guys get along. Very cute. She's such a good sport because he's always making short jokes about her. It would be so cool to have all three TCL TVs side by side for a comparison 😮👍😎
Yes I don’t think the short jokes are a good idea
This or the q80c 98 inch version that’s basically qled?
Does it have a "Movie" or "Filmmaker" mode in the picture mode settings?
People, if you want a TV, I would not wait until December to get it, they are selling out left and right. All brands. Big TVs. I don’t know if these TV makers didn’t make that many or what. But if you wait until December, then your chances of getting a big TV is going to get close to zero if not zero already
Can you send a link for the tv stands? I'm not sure I'm ready to hang a tv of this size and weight.
It's a 120lbs ish so not particularly heavy. Should be no issues wall mounting. But consider articulating vs static mount since the size is indeed enormous. I got an articulating mount but I'm not comfortable moving it so will likely just live with the poor off axis picture when viewing from the dining table
@@ShamimPirzada I'm specifically looking for tv stsnds, but need ones tall enough to work in a media room.
Nice video keep up the good work B the installer
This tv is going for 1999$ at Best Buy Dec 7
I’ve had the oled for a year and am afraid I’ll notice the difference at this point
What do you think
I'm in same boat. What did you get?
I sold my lgc3 77 inch for the 98 version of the 2024 Q651. Size matters for me. I sit 12 feet away and the 77 inch wasn’t big enough for me
Did you both ever determine what the best settings were for this TV?
Hi Brian, when you doing your 98” tv shoot out, I’m looking for one of these TVs, but being I am from the uk we have also the TCL X955 not sure where this tv sits against the Qm8, or if just renamed for the uk thanks Oz
Hi guys love watching your vids
Can you confirm the S5 is the same as the uk spec 98P745?
Thanks
I love how fast the price is coming down on 98" TVs!! I just got an 85", and once these drop another two grand I'll upgrade 😆
98” TV for $2000??? Lol nice
It may be under $3k by black Friday.
Its 2999.99 on best buy website right now
@@ericj1385 dude it was literally already on sale for 3k
At this very moment it's 2999 on BB
@@ericj1385 it already is $3k
love your educational and informative videos!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
The price makes this one mighty tempting for the home theater/gaming room.
My concern is whether the screen will hold up over the years though. I have an 82" Samsung from 2017 that looks as good today, as it did when it was new.
Does this have Gsync or VRR for gaming?
This looks identical to the TCL 98P745 we have here in Europe, except for the remote. I've got it for $1420 (Black Friday deal)
Is this exactly the same model? it looks identical, but is it the same brightness and the same panel?
@@metalstar01 Can't find much info for the US 98S550G model, neither displayspecifications nor the TCL US website state the panel brightness. For the EU 98P745, displayspecifications states the brightness as 450 cd/m2 (with max 6000cd/m2), and 95% DCI-P3 coverage. For the S5, displayspecifications says it has 90% DCI-P3 coverage - if this is correct, it might not be exactly the same panel.
Crazy good deal was it an open box you bought? I have one on order but it was 1990 euro
@@TheDane422 No, it was brand new, but it was a Black Friday deal, from the largest online store here in Romania. Normally it costs somewhere around 2500 euro
@@isandu84how is the viewing experience? Really thinking of buying one here in the UK
Enjoyed the video, B. It's fun watching you and Jen do an unboxing of these enormous TVs. 👍
Do you think the the Q6 is better than this?
I've been thinking about getting a Q6 in 85" cause I've seen it for a $1000.
I’m buying TWO these NOW!!!! It’s only $1999 OMG!!!
Whats your thoughts on this tv vs the hisense 100" u8 is the mini led worth $1k differance right now?
Is there a tv mount you would recommend for this specific model ?
Mee too!
Can't wait for affordable 100" OLED. that's end game.
By the time that happens, HDR will be so far advanced than what an OLED will be capable of and LCD's will available at bigger sizes
I picked up the TCL (8" S5 last week for $2,999 at walmart. Price is now bask up to $3,999. Thank you for the advice and your video. What TV mount do you recommend ti wall mount this 98" TV
Thanks for the great review, tv is coming in a couple days. I have to transport it to another location. Any help on boxed dimensions? How tall is Jen for reference? Thanks guys
I got a roku can i set up my device on it? With the hdmi ?
What sort of extended warranty are typically available for a TV in this price point. Best Buy has this one now for just 2 grand. Do you recommend extended maintenance plans, or are these TV's throw-aways, due to technology obsolescence?
Installer would you recommend this in a movie room? I currently have a 77 a9g Sony but I’m 12 ft away. Any suggestions? And how am I going to like this picture?
What all settings did you adjust and how much? Thanks.
do u think the tcl R754 is better than the new 98” S5??? What has a better picture quality and is brighter? The S5 I got for $3000 and the R754 is $4000..
How satisfied are you with this?
@@bharathkumar3871 💯 I love it!!! I watch tv reviews everyday and have a lot of TVs in my house from oled to Samsung neo qled & for the PRICE of 98” tv tcl is GREAT!!!!! U cant beat it for also the picture quality is great!!!! I watch mostly movies on HDR & Dolby vision MAN this is sick!!!! It’s in my man cave if I have another room man I will buy another for only $1999 baby beat that & lighter Than most tv can easily hang with extended mount with swivel that’s what I have & I love ❤️ it !!! NO PROJECTORs can even come down to the brightest & clearness of this TV !!
For a “80-“150 basement tv meant for movies and sports. Would you go for this tv, another, or a UST Projector? Thank you 🙏🏼
Depends on how far you are away from the screen. I have a 106-inch projector and screen and also an 83-inch oled. You can't beat the picture of the oled, especially if you're in the basement. If you are sitting more than 10 feet back, I would go for the projector.
I got my TV in over the weekend and I’m having a hard time getting RUclips TV to look good from my apple TV on it. Any advice on settings from anyone???
Can you guys review some tv stands for these behemoths? Thanks!
Amazon has one for 42.00. Perfect
@@allbundys can you post the link please
You guys didn’t really talk about black levels in a dark room. That’s probably the most important thing for me.
It's an LED TV without dimming zones so it's not going to he OLED quality. If that is more important than blooming of an LED like an x90l or something similar, than get a FALD LED. I think this at 98" for the price is good. Try the hisense u8k or u76k 100"
Bloody Enormous Indeed...Largest One I've Seen Yet... Aside From The 90 Inch Television I Saw In A Store Sometime Ago...
at this level of internal competition we really need some measures in the reviews….
Thanks a lot.. I watched a lot of your videos and bought this TV because of your review .. I bought the same mount too .. 🙏🏽
How do you like it?! Does it have the 2 picture screen?
Why do the corners look dark during the dirty hockey guy test?
Good review but can you really judge picture quality in lighting like that? Need to review in dark room as well as room with ambient liy
It’s on sale right now at Best Buy for 2500$
Currently $2000 at Amazon
I'm confused which is better samsung s95c or lg G3? Please reply my comment..
I bought thr G3 because I feel LG is a little better oled over Samsung but both are great.
I was looking at a short throw but after watching your review, I think Im going this route! Thanks!
I enjoy this tv.
Great TV, these Direct LED sets are very underrated like 85inch x85k, thanks J the installer, sorry B 😂
This vs 100" Hisense U76??? I need to decide w/i a couple days to make delivery in time for SB58
Great video !! Keep them coming !!
Installer, i just found your page. My family room is 21'x22' . Would you recommend this S5 for this size room. 12 foot ceilings with true flush mount led lights.
