Bravo! The paint scheme is fantastic. James your patient and detailed explanation is wonderful and probably the best explanation of painting a 1/72 airplane I have seen. I was curious if you always apply decals without applying a gloss coat first? Are you not afraid of silvering? Again, fantastic build and thank you for being so meticulous in your filming the explanation of your techniques (filming and editing these probably is just as difficult as a build, no?). I will definitely be watching for your next video!
Hi Charles thankyou that's very kind, I do try and be comprehensive but sometimes things do get simplified because of time. The biggest challenges when filming for me are 1. Keeping parts in focus. If the model is bigger this is fine, but small parts are usually filmed with macro tubes, which really reduces the depth of field range of the camera so, for something like the gunsight, I have about 1cm of workable wiggle room, it's why often smaller bits are stuck to paint lids, keeps them at a fixed distance ! And 2. I like to be close to the parts I'm working on so I can see well what's going on . Especially with figures and fine details, to stay out of shot I need more distance between eyes and model than I would like. The editing can take about 2 days, sometimes 3, over several few hour sessions. It used to be the voice over was the worst or hardest part for me but now I can talk with a lot more fluency and less retakes ! ( self confidence I think hinders me there) I used to edit on my phone, and that was OK, but when I got a pc ( first for about 10 years although I am pretty proficient with them ) my workload suffered greatly as I had never used a "proper" editing suite, and I had a lot to learn . ( my first video edited on PC was my Kettenkrad) my workflow has become a lot more streamlines since and it takes a lot less time than it did ! Thats a little insight to the production, maybe there's a video in that. About decals, I don't gloss at all anymore, there was a point where I had so much trouble getting a smooth gloss coat down and several reactive failures that made me try a technique I saw that just relied on smooth paint and good decal adhesive solutions. I will happily decal on bare paint, satin or matt varnish now, the only downside is the decals don't move as well, but floating them in more solution helps . I don't think I'd recommend decaling onto bare paint with paints like vallejo, I don't think they have the strength in the paint film to deal with softening solutions to cope, but over lacquers it's pretty safe. And I only use light tactical applications of softeners anyway ! I did a recent video called " Decals done different - decalling without a gloss varnish " that outlines my process if that's of interest. Sorry for the wall of text! I hope that gives a little insight, and thanks again for the kind words. James
Gorgeous work, love to see short run kits of unusual subjects get top flight (pun not intended) builds videoed and put out there. There is so much more to aviation history than Mustangs and MiGs
Thankyou Alan, all we can do is try and improve with every build and I like to think I get a little better with each one . Behind the scenes I'm having to do a lot of scribing at the moment.. I'm not confident with it but hopefully it will pass muster
Looks pretty good! Camouflage was gorgeous! And I think, better for connecting halves of fuselage or wings is thicker glue, thin glues often evaporates too fast. ;) Nevertheless, all the best for You! ;)
Thanks ! Just remember to be subtle , it was easy to get dust in the finish too so when dry give it a once over with some sponge to dislodge any annoying particles
Wow James,I can't achieve this on a 1/48th,and the way you done it on this 1/72 is mind blowing,it looked like a lot of fun,and I will use these tips/guides next time doing a camo on an aircraft! Thanks! ;)
You and I have one thing in common, a disdain for masking. I try to free hand almost everything. I think I would have chosen the yellow nosed variant of this bird. I've never done an Italian aircraft, but it's very high up on my priority list of kits to build. I alternate between building armor, cars and aircraft to keep from getting stagnated...perhaps my next airplane kit will be an Italian beauty.
The G.50 has a plethora of camouflage schemes. I would try a finnish one with partly the original italian camo and partly the new finnish 'warpaint'... 🙂
Great everything! The level of detail you have added to this small scale model makes a big difference. The landing gear doors, gunsight, tail wheel and other items are what makes this a true precision scale model as opposed to "out of the box". Your command of the airbrush & paint consistancy is remarkable. I have mixed results with fine detail spraying. Your work inspires me to keep trying! Thanks for posting this ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks Jim ! Re airbrushing it's all practice and understanding, a good paint helps too that's why I moved to MRP it sprays excellently once you learn it. Thanks for the kind words about the prints. I'm always looking for excuses to make new parts to add a little improvement !
@@lpjmodels I may try MRP someday. I use Mr. Color, Tamiya lacquer, Hataka lacquer, AK Real Color, SMS & Outlaw. The last two literally paint right out of the bottle, love the results I get with them. The others I get good results with, all depends on the mixture ratio. I may indeed try MRP just to see how it works.
@@jimaltergott9326 in theory it's similar to the last 2. Sms I found I usually had to thin more out of the bottle for a smooth finish but a lovely paint. Outlaw I have yet to try. Hopefully Mos can Hook me up :p

You don’t really make ‘models’ anymore, I see these more as beautiful pieces of 3 dimensional art. You spend just as much time working the colours as an artist works on a painting. That’s one of the most insane camo schemes I’ve seen on a plane and you did it freehand with an airbrush! Learnt a lot with this vid, especially the rendering with oils and washes. I saw the Model Minutes one and thought that was fantastic (he really does have a way of banging out a superb model), and decided I need to have this model in my collection. Great vid and look forward to the next one!

@@lpjmodels you know where the wing has a slight angle crank like a stuka? It's a split at that point. It has to be because of the change in angle when dropped. Airfix made the same omission on theirs so I split it myself.

But they ( airbrushes ) are pretty forgiving. If my gaahleri could do as fine work I would have used that but for this type of work I needed my 0.15 !
