Hey everyone!! Thank you SOOOO much for all of the love on this video. At the very least, I hope it’s a reminder that you CAN make a difference and there IS hope for the planet. Do the best with what you have and you’ll start to feel more powerful already 💚🌱
I loved the video so much. I recently transitioned to vegan from vegetarian but I'm always struggling with if I'm "allowed" to eat honey, even if i only get it locally sourced.
Thank you for telling your story and using your power to try and make a positive impact in the world! I feel very personal attachment to your experience because I have struggled with feeling like I'm not part of the "vegan club" for having slip ups now and then because I was afraid of not only being ostrichized by my fellow vegans, but also because I was afraid it would give non-vegans the wrong impression about what being vegan means. It took me a long time, but I have come to terms with the fact that we all live in a non-vegan world right now, so slip ups are unavoidable and should not be treated like the end of the world. I appreciate that you were able to share that particular message about what being vegan is actually like and give people a realistic representation of what it's like to live in alignment with your values when the world is not built for that. You are an actual goddess and I can't wait to see what else you have in store!
Love this thanks so much for sharing!
@@aeriellebloom2782 Honey isn't vegan because the honey doesn't belong to us, it belongs to the bees. I'll be honest, I love Nectar more.

We don’t need 100 perfect vegans, we need 1,000 imperfect vegans that try!
フェルナンデズゼイヴィア and after that we need 1000 perfect 👌🏾 vegans 🌱 😂 jk jk jk 😂👌🏾
every bit helps, but it depends why you are doing it. If you are doing it for health, then sure, one bit of meat a week is safe, for environmentalism, it makes less sense, because it's an emergency, we not only need to stop climate change, but reverse the current effects, and that will be hard to do if we eat even one bit of meat per week, and that's where plant-based burgers come in lol. If it's for ethical reasons, once you decide that animal abuse and exploitation is bad, then the question becomes, how many times per week can you hurt animals before it becomes wrong?
Evan Richards love your line of thought there 💕💕😊 beautifully written
Depends if you are willfully eating or not, if you make a mistake, you learn and move on but if you eat willfully non-vegan food then your not vegan. You can call yourself any other name but you are not vegan - it's that simple.
jhnsnow421 Yeah but if you think about, anything you decide to eat is technically by your will. Through each food a person eats, they may or may not be aware of something non-vegan in it such as honey, but it’s their intention after making that “mistake” to show if they’re vegan or not
It’s a real struggle when you start eating as vegan and your parents think that you’re on diet
Nam Bình I’m a teenage girl so now my mom is convinced I have an eating disorder 😅
Omg i can so relate to this
100% agree
It's so annoying when people think that you only do it for weight loss
to be fair, it IS a diet. A "diet" just is a specific way of eating. It's not always weight-loss related. Example: Celiac people are on a gluten-free diet. You're just on a permanent vegan diet. I guess people prefer to refer to it as a certain kind of life style, but technically, its not wrong :)
I explained it to mine, and they're vegetarian from the beginning, but the concept of dairy being scary doesn't seep through their heads no matter what I try.😭😂
“Vegan is what I eat, not what I am” I think many people need this mentality.
uhh.... now that i think about it... doesn't that mean she is a canibal...?
@@7_muhammadmuharromisusmaya196 She said "practice" not "eat"
@@7_muhammadmuharromisusmaya196 You mean Hannibal?
food is only a small part of what veganism is about.
Veganism is a way of living, basically avoiding animal use and products as much as possible since it’s a movement that primarily focuses on animal rights. That would include clothing, entertainment, toiletries, etc. This is probably why she mentioned if she was either on a plant-based diet or vegan. A lot of vegans would argue that if you eat vegan meals but use animal products in your daily life (leather etc.) thats just plant-based diet.
But I think it’s important to know that it’s not about perfection but about intention.
Thank you for the "normal vegan" perspective which is almost never heard on social media.
Being vegan means you are against the exploitation, use, and abuse of animals. Knowingly and intentionally eating animal products means that you are NOT vegan. Don't get me wrong it's a great big step that someone cuts out 95% of animal products but if you are still eating animal flesh and their secretions you simply aren't vegan.
Choose Vegan bro people like you are exactly what’s wrong with the vegan community & you’re missing the entire point of this video & comment section

Sky Dawson i love what you guys do. I’ve wondered though why those specific masks? They look intimidating and I’d think would prevent many from coming over
Dylan Schwarz if you go to the org’s website, they have a whole section explaining it! There’s a lot of symbolism behind it. I totally agree with you that it would make sense for it to prevent people from coming up but I’ve noticed it actually does the opposite. We’ve had people come up to see us and tell us they drove by and decided to stop because it was so intriguing.
Dylan Schwarz its the guy fawkes mask, its about exposing corruption and bringing truth to the light. its also symbolic of “anonymous” so the activist can stand together in solidarity with the animals who’ve lost their lives and were stripped of their individuality and used as commodities
@@xofrnkk9209 I gotcha, I feel like if it was a less intimidating mask more people would participate
You’re amazing!
I needed to hear this. There's a lot of toxic behavior around veganism and people need to know that it's OK to do their best. Any effort to eat more plant based for whatever reason is a positive step and that's what people should be focusing on. Not slandering others efforts by saying "you're not vegan enough"
Hardest thing about being vegan is being attacked online by people that have a problem with what you eat. I’ll never understand it.
Compassionate Living from fellow vegans or others?
I haven’t had this problem idk why
I will never get this toxic behaviour anyway. If you're such a convinced hardcore vegan, what exactly do you get from food shaming others? Oh, that's right. You give the vegan community a fucking awful reputation for being pesky and patronising. If anything, you're hindering more people from even trying because they dont wanna be part of that same toxic community. This is why Merle is such a breath of fresh air.
@@AlexisDimes vegans online when discussing shampoo etc and others when discussing food irl? I know that's really specific but I had a good think about it before answering and that is exactly the type of stick I get from different groups of people

I’ve been vegetarian for 10 years and have become complacent... almost not caring about my effect, thinking I don’t have one. But we all play a role, even vegans. I’m deciding to finally actually go vegan now. Thank you for this video Merle.
Been vegetarian for 2 years, I think I’m going to go vegan too. That’s why I want to watch lots of videos like these so that I can prepare myself.
You're doing the right thing, you'll never regret your decision 💕💕💕🌱 thanks for the animals 🐔🐖🐄🐇

babygoblin So glad to know I’m not the only one crying 😭. I’ve been on a process of transitioning for over a year now and I keep on slipping off because I live with a family where in I’m the only one who wants to go plant based and the least to know how to cook. I feel bad for myself everytime I fail but I still try to come back and start over and over again. I’m crying because I feel the pain the animals feel as they go through the process of slaughter and knowing that I contributed to that pain 💔💔💔.
impressionsbygelay don’t feel bad! Just do better for yourself and the animals and hopefully those around you will follow suit.
When my boyfriend and I moved in together, we made a promise to eat at least 80% vegan. Maybe once a month we buy chicken, and we still use cheese. If someone serves me meat, I eat since it's already on my plate. But at home we cook delish vegan foods and I can say it feels great in my body and in my mind as well 😊 I mist definitely do not identify as vegan, because I'm not, but I eat a lot of vegan food. That's a huge step and I'm proud of having taken it.
Msfinable I like this idea! My family constantly eats meat so I don’t know if I could ever fully switch over but I like that you incorporate plant based foods more than meat!
@@nessyfay I truly believe that every little bit counts and that you don't have to go all in in order to still have a good impact ☺️ For me this is so much more sustainable than going fully vegan
That's awesome, every little bit makes a difference!! Good for you guys😊😊
This is what I have decided to do as well. In India, it is very difficult to make family understand the ‘vegan’ idea. Vegetarian they understand but Vegan, nope! So, if I am invited to a family dinner or a wedding I will just say they I am vegetarian. I don’t identify as vegan but I do a lot of plant based food.
Not vegan either, but I do care about animals and about the environnement. I live in a small town in France and I just buy fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, cheese etc ... Directly from small farmers. We have some of the most delicious honey for example in the region and I eat it, because I know how it's made.

@@kenzibarwood284 it depends on if you are eating too much meat or not already. The key is in balanced nutrition.
@@kenzibarwood284 the dust bowel was actually caused by an over agriculture of staple crops which in itself was due to an oversaturation of the market. Everyone being vegan or near that would actually promote that kind of competitive market again. Farmers would not be able to sell their foods at sustainable rates.
@@kenzibarwood284 as is the U.S. alone has an agricultural industry which can feed 11 billion people. This is without the implementation of the most efficient methods. It is good that we have livestock to take in the overstock of crops and it also provides easier access to a balanced diet, then fertilizer, and allows farmers to sell higher priced goods. The main problem with all vegan diets is that regions can only support certain crops. It is best both for the land and for us to sustain it with the most diversity possible. Our diets and farming should honestly include things like algaes, insects, amphibians, reptiles on a regular too, but along the lines of disgust and abnormality they are phased out. Without these methods of control we lose stability, becoming susceptible to plagues and famines. It is just lucky that the world is such a large and kind place where when one region goes short, the people can move and give the land a break or receive help.
I'm a vegan too, an imperfect one, but let's keep trying
Watch "Earthlings" or "Dominion 2018" here on RUclips, and you will have no problem ever again. I promise you..
@Faken Name A vegan means doing it for the animals. If you're just boicotting twice a meal, you're doing it to make yourself feel better, not for the victims you just ate. Stop eating them, it's that simple
@Faken Name Poor you, getting a "bad name", because i'm actually standing up for innocent animals. Would you say the same if I asked people to stop raping, if "only" just once a week? Definition of veganism: "a person who does not eat or use animal products." Stop paying people to do that, when you wouldn't do it with any other pet or human.
@@idruss You're not going to convince anyone to change by being rude and condescending to them. Talk about your favorite vegan alternatives, encourage them to push harder, but don't be disrespectful just because you think they're not doing "enough." All that does is make people resentful and eat animal flesh out of spite.
Faken Name yes but you are not a vegan if you eat meat?! Lol
2:35 I'm not saying I'm saving the world, but there is *POWER* in that choice.
Whoah, that was a solid statement, girl!
from a non-vegan/vegetarian: This is why I love Merle. She tries to show people how great vegan dishes can be, all without trying to force people or being condescending/patronising, if youre not vegan. I have a feeling she might even get Aria to go vegan :)
Or maybe even you? (Not forcing ;p)
@@nicolaspirlet i think i could be convinced but it will take more than some videos. Sadly, its also quite a bit harder to accomplish when you've got certain food sensitivities. All the meat substitutes are either packed with gluten (seitan) or soy-based, which is bad for my gluten sensitivity and histamine intolerance....even plant-based proteins such as legumes will cause problems with my histamine. And last but not least, the variety of vegetables available here are not big enough for my taste. I'm from Germany, but I did spend 2 years in Toronto, Canada where you'd get such a vast and huge variety of veggies from the chinese stores, that you could easily go without meat without missing anything. It's not even close to being the same here.... So...technically yes, but practically no. I do wanna try to cut down on dairy and meat though, for sure.
Oh Aria is soooo into her I’m surprised he isn’t already trying.
lilacfunk they’re already together
Faliandra that’s my issue too! I have a soy sensitivity so I can’t eat much tofu or many meat substitutes
I'm 10 yrs old and I used to LOVE meat and dairy and everything like that. Thank you sooo much Merle because this video inspired me to become vegan! At the start it was really really hard but after this video I had the motivation and inspiration to become at least a vegetarian but I became vegan and that's even better! Thank u so so so so so so much for changing my life like this.
Edit: Thank you sooo much for the people who liked my comment! It really means a lot to me.
Amirah Chowdhury wow that’s really beautiful, I hope you can continue to do what you want despite the obstacles!! Good luck :)
Girl u young u need protein or you'll stunt ur growth.. but whatever it's not my life 😂
i’d suggest you start to go vegan when you’re at least 15. you’re still growing.
Y’all, she can get plenty of protein from other sources.
My concern for a ten year old is that your parents may not give you the food you need to be vegan. Try asking them to get pasture-raised eggs, for example, so that you get complete animal protein and nutrients. Then when you’re older and can work and buy your own food, you can plan your meals and be vegan ❤️ good luck!!!! I love to see such young kids passionate about ethics and the planet.
You DO NOT need animal protein. Don't listen to these fools.
The hardest part about being vegan is the constant need to be perfect. It’s such a demoralizing community to be apart of because on one hand you have militant vegans ready to point out how you’re not vegan if you mess up & meat eaters ready to watch you fail and laugh at you. Thank you for restoring my faith in the movement, I wish more ‘normal vegans’ were able to have their voices heard on more platforms because it would do way more good than the current methodology of the community❤️
@laughingmakeshappy hun, it's not a debate. It's completely unnatural. If you can't survive in nature on your diet than it isn't your species intended diet, end of.
@laughingmakeshappy oh yeah that too but I went into veganism expecting that. I didn't realize that when I signed up to live a vegan lifestyle that I had to 100% PERFECT all the time or I wasn't vegan because I feel like soooo many vegan activists and influencers push this idea of perfection down people's throats and the truth is, vegans live in an extremely non vegan world. Yeah, more options are available than ever before but sometimes the best a vegan can do is being vegetarian in certain situations (like if all there is to eat is a veggie burger that was made with eggs for ex) and I wish that was talked about more in the vegan online community and that vegans online were much more encouraging.
@@AliceRoche-ii2ke You think you can survive in the wilderness on your diet?
Have you ever actually caught an animal you were planning to eat? Do you eat raw meat? Because cooking using fire is so fucking unnatural.
@@adshille8987 Um, animals exist naturally in nature. Its easy enough to develop tools in nature to kill them.
You most definitely won't survive though.
Hun, our ancestors learned to cook meat using fire.
@laughingmakeshappy lol, what plants can you find in nature?
"Having no hope is just as useless as being a climate change denier."
That hit me hard. I've been thinking about going vegan for a while. I've reduced my meat and dairy intake a lot but never stopped consuming them fully. I'm a very negative thinker and have almost no hope for anything and this video made me realise that I could be right, maybe everything will go wrong (still sad to think that way, I know), but I can still participate to try to do some change. And I'm sure someone in my surroundings will be inspired by that, do the same and inspire someone else. And that's something.
I agree! I think if more people thought like this, we actually would be able to alleviate or even solve a lot of the world's problems. :)
❤️🐄🐣🐷
I think there's absolutely no hope for the planet in terms of climate change but that dont mean I'm not gonna be vegan. I ain't giving none of my money to the industries that are fucking us over.
That’s so good! When I’m the dumps I sometimes watch vegan documentaries on Netflix, one of my favourites that really inspired me was game changers!
Don't forget you have to answer to yourself, being vegan helps me with that. Learn to focus on yourself, you can't clean up the whole world, but you can clean up your back yard.
"If that means I'm not in the club, then I don't want to be in the club"
100% this, I practice a plant-based diet, but social situations or limitations of vegan options (I curreently live in South Korea) means I'm going to slip up. This is the kind of promotion the vegan, plant-based, vegetarian cultures need - less pressure on going ALL IN and more encouragement to give it a try!
Bring a drawstring backpack with vegan bars and you’ll never slip up again. Problem solved
I feel you @StephanieBoedecker! I'm in South Korea too, and being plant-based is so difficult here. I swear by mogoeats. It's a plant-based subscription food service that sends vegan meal ingredients a la carte. I just keep a few of their meal boxes in my pantry for when I'm too lazy too research/cook new recipes. Saved me a bunch of times!
Stephanie Boedecker I’m pretty much where you are. I’m probably 95% plant based. I had a situation just this week where I had to pack my bags in a hurry and go stay with my parents because of sickness. I needed to take care of them. There was nothing in the house really that I could make. So as soon as I could I went to the store . I even got my mom to eat what I was eating. 😁 She likes it! So I’ve definitely had some times where there really weren’t any options!
Yes!!!! I think many vegetarians and vegans don’t understand that in some cultures or classes, going meat-free is just not feasible.
@@FrancesBaconandEggs I'm wondering what some of those cultures and classes are?
I was a vegetarian for 20 years and thought I had sacrificed enough. Only stopped dairy 6 months ago it feels so good to not deceive myself, sometimes subconsciously
just wanted to remind people that ALL animal agriculture contributes more to emissions than plant foods. not just factory farming!
Especially cows. They emit methane through churning.
Eating lettuce is over 3 times worse in greenhouse gas emissions than eating bacon
graziadaily.co.uk/life/real-life/science-says-vegetarian-worse-environment-eating-meat/
Andrew Johnson Sure, but who eats only lettuce , especially in such large quantities to equal the calories of meat. The point is not to replace meat with lettuce. And there is an array of plant foods that produce fewer emissions than meat. I think you're missing the bigger picture here.
Andrew Johnson the science is very clear that plant based diets are more eco friendly. thats an article
@Faken Name No because it takes a lot more plants to feed the cow versus people eating the vegetables directly.
You’re vegan!
Don’t let those perfectionists vegans try to stop you.
Veganism isn’t about perfection.
It’s about compassion.
We need to support all those who are making an effort.
I’m vegan, but I don’t like extremists vegans who put others down.
Marvin Tran The best way to put it!! You’re one of the vegans that makes everyone wanna go vegan.
I don't even use the label. When people ask if I'm vegan, I just tell them I have common sense.
Marvin Tran yeahh I agree
If she eats eggs she's not vegan she's plant-based, she eats eggs unnecessarily and could be avoided by giving back the eggs to the hens to eat
@@ONeill01 have you thought that maybe the people selling those eggs if they saved those chickens need money to feed them? And if selling their eggs is the way to do it, why not? Chickens are not being killed, and are treated quite well, that's the point. And as the person above said you sound like the one they're talking about.
I love that she makes the distinction between plant-based and vegan. Being vegan is an attitude, plant-based is a diet. Some vegans might argue, that you're not a vegan anymore if you slip up and say you're just plant-based. Personally i think it's hard to draw the line. But imo veganism is about the animals and everything else, like environment, is just a bonus.
I switched to a plant based diet for my health. I came to appreciate the benefits to the environment and animal welfare later. Those things were a bonus in my eyes.
Well not really, being vegan is a lifestyle and being plant based is a diet.
It's more so an ethical stance than an attitude, and there's plenty of different attitudes and opinions within the vegan community.
We don’t need to categorize every single thing that we do. Just eat what you think is in your best interest. If you want to help the environment and save some animal lives then definitely eat plant based. But if you for whatever reason feel the need to eat and egg or something I really couldn’t care less. You do you!
For me, I consider myself plant based because of the negative connotation that comes with the word vegan. It's unfair, but there is a very loud, very pushy minority that paints us negatively. In order to foster a positive environment for conversation with people who do not eat the way that I do, I use the term plant based. People have been very kind, understanding, and had lots of interesting questions. Sometimes the questions can be a little short sighted or misguided, but that's from misinformation and then I have an opportunity to re-educate. I have chosen to be plant based for the animals, for the environment, and for my health. Those things make me vegan, but they also make me plant based. :)
The mama running after her baby is so sad to me.🥺 I literally wanna throw all my meat , milk , cheese , and eggs away.
I ve never seen and i will never want to see those videos of how animals get treated in the farms. I feel i will be too sick and i dont want think about. I Just pretend this things dont exist. I do t want to be scarred For life. The humanbeingS are really discusting

Jibby if I was you starting out as a new vegetarian I would start buying some meat substitutes such as tofu or some fake meat (vegan chicken nuggets, vegan sausages etc) to get started so you can slowly transition from your meat based diet with ease. Also get lots of Veggies and fruit. I eat a lot of pasta, curries, noodles, salads, pizza, fruit smoothies, and stuff like that. staples are tofu, beans, legumes, veggies, fruit, fake meat. There are many good recipes online. Good luck :)))

Glad she stated this! We don't realize how powerful our consumption habits are. Veganism at it's core is an ethical stance that uses economic principles to make a change in society. By lowering demand, we alter(in this case diminish) the supply or production of these products.

@E A F It has more negatives than positives for your health.
Eco-anxiety is real, I’ve had so many breakdowns because it’s so scary. And it’s so frustrating something sooo simple, changing what you put on your plate, can stop it, yet people still don’t do it.
Same this is why I'm vegetarian working towards vegan. I've cried multiple times about climate change/global warming. I just wonder what it will take to make other people do something, anything.
This is an iffy topic because both parties(vegans/vegetarians and non vegans/vegetarians) are contributing to climate change. I know that people will most likely ignore this comment and say it's not true before the do any research. I'm not trying to attack anyone, I'm just stating facts that most people ignore.
Ice Crisps I agree everyone is contributing to climate change, however, animal agriculture is the number one cause of climate change & the single biggest thing you can do to help, is to go vegan.
@@gwenmaisybug3864 yes but by being vegan or vegetarian people are contributing way less to climate change compared to non vegans or vegatarians

This was my extra push to finally try to go plant based (:
"Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals...."
Veganism isn't a diet. It's just an affirmation of life on earth. It's an ethical orientation. I hope we can frame it that way instead of seeing it as vegans infighting over who is or isn't vegan enough.
This is effective activism. Presenting people with facts in a non-judgemental way. Leading by example. Showing that you’re not perfect. Relating to the struggle of changing the way you’ve eaten your entire life. Not pretending that you didn’t enjoy eating animal-based foods. This is plant-based eating/veganism, normalized.
From one vegan to another:
Amazing job, Merle. So impactful.
That's so true :)
I just say I am plant based because I still wear my leather shoes that I bought before I went Vegan 12 years ago... some look down on me about wearing them. We all need to be nicer to eachother and understand that any progress is still progress.
Ignore them, you deserve all the praise. Most vegans I know don't mind using old animal products till they are obsolete. ✌
I think it's fine to do that. I know tons of vegans who wear their old leather and wool items until they're worn out. I actually see more non-vegans scrutinize vegans for wearing those items.
I also still wear my leather boots because I spend 8-9 hours a day on my feet at work. Synthetic shoes leave me in tears from the pain so I don't wear them. Sorry not sorry, I am still part of the world and need to make money to live, and if that means wearing leather so I can work in comfort then so be it. No, I don't feel good about it but I haven't found a better option that also won't send me broke.
But you're getting good use out of your shoes, and that's another important way to help the environment. You're reducing buying and reusing what you have. :-)
Throwing away the leather shoes you bought before you went vegan and buying new ones is way worse than just wearing them while you have them. You're absolutely right

My wife, a meat eater and i, a vegetarian, both love your goodful series - and we both found this video powerful, moving and bravely honest - thank you for the validation of the in-between of veggie and vegan - this is so hard for me....wanting to be the perfect vegan or just quitting. i love this notion of eating, and in life, doing the best we can with what we got. and having self kindness....there is no vegan club to fit into - it is daily life choice - thank you, merle, so much! i feel inspired. you are supremely eloquent, and such fun!💗
people have such a negative connotation when it comes to veganism. they dont even give it a chance, they think vegans limit themselves, when in reality, its them that restrict themselves by not trying vegan food 🤔
fyi: this is my experience and what ive noticed in my country, might not be applicable to yours 🤷♀️also not all people are like this, i just generalised it, my mistake 🙂
That is so far from the truth
frangipani exactly, pretty much most food doesn’t come from animals.
I understand your point but how you are trying to convey it is a slight backhand observation. Instead of calling back to vegan haters that they are “the real limiters”, just explain why you feel being vegan can be liberating. Feeding back the negativity causes a feedback loop. Let the distortion stop with us. Be the positive. Thank you.
Vegans still limit themselves, obviously since they don't eat meat. No need to hide the obvious. But I do agree on the fact that since veganism (is that a word? ) has taken such a big proportion and that there's this "war" going on about both parties, that most meat eaters just naturally (out of pure ego motives) refuse to try "veg" foods. So, I would say that vegans restrict themselves (duh) and also a lot of meat eaters do too *but not all* (don't put all of us in the same boat please. )
@@Quezonol no I understand. personally im not a vegan, i just enjoy vegan food and love to explore new cuisine. it was just an observation of mine. in my culture, being a vegan is almost unheard of and is almost always met with criticism before theyve even given it a chance. sorry if you got offended

Thank you so much for making this. It is so refreshing and inspiring to hear this balanced point of view. I have started eating more plant-based and I am super happy about it, this makes me want to keep going.
She seems like she has a very healthy and rational attitude and approach to this, which is refreshing to see considering how many "extremes" we see in today's culture. I honestly would love to try vegetarianism or veganism, but due to several digestive issues, there is so little of it (the diet) that my body tolerates without getting a bad reaction - or worse, getting sick. But I still wanna try to get as close to it as I can get without compromising my own health. Both because of the environment/the climate, but also because it's getting harder and harder to eat animal products without feeling guilty about it. Like she said, you do your best with what you have, and that's really all anyone can ask for.
I don't get what you're saying, though. Veganism just eliminates meat, dairy, eggs, and honey from the diet (and their derivatives), which means literally any other food you can think of is still able to be eaten on a vegan diet? What are you not able to tolerate from plants? Fiber? Why are you able to digest animal products without getting a "bad reaction" or "sick?" Do you eat nothing but animal products? Do you never eat any plants with animal products?
p.s. It's a lifestyle, not a diet. *Anyone* can be vegan, even an Inuit eating nothing but seal all day, as long as they go as far as is *possible and practicable* and quite frankly all I hear in this comment is the desire to not to go as close to it as you can? If you were going as close as you can, you'd already be a vegan. But you said you "want to try," which is a completely different thing. If you "want to try" there is *literally nothing* stopping you from being vegan except you, dietary restrictions (whatever they may be) included.
☝🏽 And here's a perfect example of one of the extremes.
TheCarlScharnberg Thanks for your insightful reply to my comment and for addressing all of my questions. I can’t believe I didn’t realize advocating to not kill a living being was more extreme than killing them!
TheCarlScharnberg hey !! Just to let you know I also used to have severe digestive issues and then I tried to go vegan for a month and it really really helped me. Obviously I don’t know if it will do the same for you but maybe just try give it a shot :) x I stuck to it now because my digestive issues are way way better 🌱 goodluck

I’ve been a vegetarian for 15 years. My reasons were health based - my mom and her side of the family all had colon cancer. Mom’s colostomy surgeon said the best way to reduce my risk was to stop eating meat. Not gonna lie, it is a daily struggle. Giving up chicken was the hardest. But I decided that I could have one cheat meal every three months, and there are times when I decide not to cheat when the cheat day comes. I gave up on milk years ago, but cheese and eggs are still in my diet. Now that there are increasingly more vegan replacement options, I find my consumption of eggs and cheese is reducing. Now that more Californians are moving to my state, the stigma around plant based eating is drastically reduced. It was really a challenge to eat out with friends in the 2000s. Whatever your reason is for a dietary change, you shouldn’t be dragged for it. My colon is healthy and for now that’s confirmation I made the right decision for me. Love your recipes, Merle!!

@@helenp703 eggs are chickens menstrual cycles. it takes 26 hours to lay one, and they hurt and have been genet. manipulated to have 300 a year.

IMHO you've been doing a terrible decision health-wise. You should learn how to fast and avoid PROCESSED MEAT (not conventional meat) and the 4 knights of the apocalypse food-wise which are:
- Grains
- Dairy
- Sugar
- Vegetable oils
By completely giving up on the most nutritious existing food for so many years you're probably deficient in a handful of nutrients.

Such a beautiful, inspirational video, you're great, Merle! I've been vegetarian for almost a decade, but I just started thinking about going vegan a few months ago.
It's not that easy because I still live with my parents, but I've been eating mostly vegan for the past two or three months and I'm slowly getting there.
To the people who are convinced they'll never be able to go 100% vegan, I'd say every little help is a blessing: try to eat less meat, substitute dairy with plant based milk, experiment with new food, it's going to be an exciting journey, I promise!
Thank you so much for this!! I’ve been vegan for a little over a month now, and I had a slip up once or twice. I felt so awful about it just because I know people make it seem so bad if you ever slip up and when you said sometimes you do and that’s okay I felt soooo much better about myself. I’m still doing the best that I can at being vegan but knowing I can still be myself and try whatever I can with what I have I’ll still try my best to be as plant based as I can thank you so much
This was amazing Merle! You nailed it girl!!!! I also eat plant based, but I won't call myself a vegan because I also slip up. The way you worded everything was incredible.
wow the way that you described how you feel when slipping up is exactly how I feel when I slip up! So relieving to hear that it happens to you too thank you for this video!!
This is beautiful! Thank you! I agree with all of it! I'm a vegetarian for the benefit of making my life easier when I go out to eat or to someone's house, but my diet is 80%+ plant based because it's the best I can do- I fear restricting myself into an eating disorder.
When I have my own kitchen someday, I do look forward to it being meat free.
I loved this video!! I am making a more conscious choice towards being vegan, but am not there yet, but hate that some people feel like either you are or you are not. You gave me a lot of inspiration!
My son has a lot of health issues.. so his pediatrician, nutritionists/health coach, and allergist recommended I lean more towards a plant base diet for him. To encourage him to change his diet I had to eat the same diet (which is the most difficult because I grew up eating meat 3 times a day) it’s been a year now and the difference in my sons health was amazing.. knowing about how it is helping with the climate change is even better. We still eat meat 3-4 times a week sometimes none at all but we are slowly leaning more towards 1-2 times a week. Love how you don’t push but you encourage people to lean more towards a plant base diet! Thank you for helping us on our journey.. we love your recipes!
Goodful, specifically Merle inspired me into going vegan slowly... right now I don't eat any animals or animal products aside from shellfish so I think thats peskatarian? But even then I don't eat seafood that much but I do occasionally like its crawfish season right now but I don't eat it every day.
That sounds like my vegan journey. The last animal product I ate was oysters. I noticed that when I last ate them, my joint pain got worse. Now that I stopped eating them, I feel much better. Thank you for speaking out. I feel exactly the same. For my family and friends I'm too vegan, too extreme, some of them are constantly trying to discourage me, even after 2 years being vegan. And for "the vegan community" I'm not vegan enough, cause I've made mistakes, I live in a country where veganism is no where near common, so I don't have access to mock meats and many vegan cheeses, and a lot of restaurants don't offer a single vegan option. I own a couple makeup products that are cruelty free, but not vegan, also I eat honey sometimes.
