  • A rambling talk about why I like The Forever Winter but also some of the issues it suffers. The game is very fun in its current form and has a lot of potential but of course any title in early access can change significantly over time so if you prefer to keep your eye on it, remember to wishlist or follow on steam to see how the game develops over the comign months.

I wish the HK mechanic was split up a bit. That most scavenging triggers would be responded to by rival scavengers (they want your new shiny stuff), while some are related to factions (kill a VIP means a special operations squad is tasked with ending you), and the rest can be situational (depending on the mission type, location, etc).
Also the HK squads should be more indicative of the faction that is fielding them. This gives variety with what you're contending with, and gives more texture to the different factions. Eurasians with specialized cyborgs, Europans with small helicopters that drop off the spec ops team (and to act as a spotter), Euruskan organic nightmares, etc.

I have been thinking. Rather than having the magic trigger of enemies just knowing you picked up water, an immersive fix to that omniscience would be having enemies in the vecinity of the one player who looted something so valuable, and cause such reaction. Including the potential of Recon drones or cyborgs, but maybe that would be more of a nuisance or a chore than a threat. "You gotta kill or lure away that thing or you get Hunter Killers called on you". Finally, even if nobody has seen you picking up the valuable item, if the place is sufficiently transited, a late alarm can be inevitable.
Edit: I know enemies already get aggro from watching th player loot, but I'm not sure if that's valid for mission objectives

One of the things I liked is that after playing and getting a feel for it and watching some vids desecribing the mechanics I realized that the A.I. isn't "stupid" when the enemy soliders look at it you and you have time to back away. I've ltierally had the "back away slow" and backed away behind a corner and they turned away and kept going where they going. It didn't feel, after that and a few other moments like it that the A.I. hadn't seen me. Instead it felt like a group of soliders saw a scav, had been heading towards combat and just was like "If you leave RIGHT NOW we never saw you."
I get that from the question mark too, whenever that pops up. "Look we don't know what's there, but if its not one of ours we're killing it." And it's not that you're spotted, it's that every bullet they waste on you is a bullet that might have saved them from a borg, or a mech, or one of the heavy infrantries, whatever. It's a neat thing.

The key to the water system is the quest system. You can stack missions pretty easily, such as killing cyborgs, killing Eurasian units, collecting cyborg parts. Those 3 missions can be done at the same time and nets you 3-5 days of water in addition to rep and loot.
Another aspect of the water system is that once you hit your cap, all water rewards from quests are converted into barrels in your stash.

So far the only "feel bad" death I've had was when I was extracting from a solo scrap nexus run.
I was doing fine killing the waves of cyborgs at the timed extraction, had about 15 seconds left on the timer, and then I suddenly got shot by some kind of tank cannon or something. I couldn't even see what shot me, as it shot from behind the wrecked mech at the other end of the hallway, but the first shot chunked my HP and stunned me for the follow-up shot, which killed me.
Was a really shit way to go as it was at the very end of extraction after a whole run, and I've never even seen anything heavier than infantry on that map before or since. I still don't even know what killed me then.

I got called a fanboy because I said I was having fun playing this. Like bro that false dichotomy bullshit is so tired. Everybody has opinions on the water system, well here's mine: it should not drop in real time and it should be more punishing than it is outside of that realtime degradation. It's my belief that water should not be awarded by quests, because WE are supposed to be the water supply for THEM. Water should have to be gathered. And on top of that, if the water spawns in missions were reduced by half there would STILL be plenty of water to gather.
Other than the AI and terrain issues, the itemization/weapon balance needs a huge pass, even before they introduce new weapons (perhaps we'll get both of those events to happen at the same time with a big update in the future?). Weapons are using the wrong ammo, scopes are bad, none of the accessories barely have any info about them and the whole Innards UI needs a major overhaul for functionality.
And yet I'm still having fun. The atmosphere, the close calls, the epic "combat voyeurism," the fucked up lore, the OST, it's all such an amazing vibe. These devs have passion and talent and this game is something special. The way the game is now is the worst it's ever gonna be.

      @PixxxelWizard День назад +1

@@spiralvex2686 That is absolutely a fair point. I feel that water is too plentiful but to eliminate it as a quest reward entirely might be too far. Like, the first time you do one, sure, (and add more quests) but after that, it simply has to be less, esp. if the IRL time is removed. If only some quests give water people will complain those are the only quests. It ends up being a challenge to balance.

I really like this game. As early of a state as it's in, I've already played it for a ton of hours, so much so, my water tank is full and I've got more than another 50+ days of water stocked and I usually don't even take up water tanks.
So far, I've been focusing on prestiging Shaman, Mask Man and Bag Man to see how they're affected by it, especially Bag Man in terms of speed since he's big and very slow at the start.
I love that every run I feel I'm on a tightrope. Even knowing the map and having a general idea of enemy spawns and behavior, I'm always one mistake from death. Just me not noticing a patrol coming a bit too close or getting a little too greedy and overconfident is enough to find myself with my back against a wall and a dozen gun firing on my rig.
I like that everything is valuable and some rig equipments are very strong but take up valuable space that might be better used to bring back a lockbox.
I have some ideas I'd like to present in the Steam forums and, while I'm sure some are already being thought by the devs and some are going to be ignored, I like the feel that I'm in a phase of the game where my feedback, and that of the other scavs, might help make the game better (not easier and not necessarily more casual-friendly but even more entertaining without distancing away from the premise).

I have little to no interest in extraction shooters. A genre perfect for the world, themes and atmosphere the developers are trying to present. All the more ironic as I love those too, just not the genre.

Well those people enjoyed the game. I’ve sunken at least 20 hours by now and still enjoy playing. Yes the game has massive jank but it’s still enjoyable for a lot of people. Others like you want it to be polished more first before giving it a go and thats fine too, but it’s far from being a scam (thats Tarkov’s thing).

The people whining about the water system are actually getting really annoying. I’m already at 30 days of water supply. It’s not hard at all, it gives you a reason to hop back into the game rather than get your high off of it for a couple weeks and you ditch it, and if you don’t even play that’s often anyways then you don’t have to worry about it stash anyways since you don’t play enough to build a stash enough to preserve. Just babies. The devs purposely said it’s a hardcore game for a reason. Same as dayz, escape from tarkov, rust etc. just stop whining.

£25 is fine but when we effectively need 100x that worth of PC to run it close to 'as intended'- it's kiiinda not particularly relevant that it's at a "low entry point" as such. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the gameplay and the anti-shooter approach but I get better frames playing Streets of Tarkov in 4k than I do this at 1080, granted Tarkov is probably 8 years ahead in terms of dev time, so mustn't grumble but by the Gods, nobody ever claimed Tarkov was optimised either. I'd really appreciate a Tarkov-style key binding system; with press, release and continuous options along with the 2 key combos to avoid things like jumping when we want to vault. My personal tip is CTRL+Left or Right (A or D) when we need to get a sudden move on, it darts us one way or the other and helps avoid any staggering effect or that ultra slow start we sometimes get. Cyborgs going down to one shot would be a bit off imo, since fleshy humans don't always, a future metal man shouldn't either but a headshot tends to end them just fine. Water - it's single player, make it tied to a difficulty since plenty of us really don't want the casual approach and some do.

Explain why I was getting chased down by Eurasian Cyborgs while Euruskan Infantry were gunning me down? There weren't any Europan in sight, by that logic they should be shooting each other?

They are only "technically" allies, this is due to long range communications breakdown and other regional factors.
