It's been an honestly lifechanging experience to get to talk and work with the developers at Fun Dog, and I hope that I've translated their vision to you well.
Being able to share a universe I find beautiful and inspiring with others who share my same tastes is the thing I love doing most in the world, and you all have made that possible in a way I never would have expected, so thank you all for showing up for these pieces, regardless of their subject matter.
Forever Winter will be, like I said in a prior video, like the Heavy Metal Magazine on the middle of the stack in the bottom shelf in the library; it's the Dragon's Heaven OVA, or Venus Wars, or the Nausicaa Manga, or World War Robot; something many people won't be into or might not get . I don't talk passionately about games because I think they'll blow up or be popular; the media I love HITS for me in some way, and I make these videos to try and explain why.
Not everything I like will be for everyone - But if it IS for you, you're the homie.
Hope you've enjoyed these videos, and I'm excited to keep making them.
    Cheers
    Riloe

These videos are themselves art, and they make me share your passion for this game. I never would have heard about it if it wasn't for stumbling across your first video on it, nor do i think i would've ended up subscribing to your channel despite your other content before it being very good in its own right, i just wouldn't have gotten over the default apathy of browsing the internet these days. On the topic of the game's understated humor: That diagram of Toothy's biofuel bags is interesting because it describes the process in which prisoners are captured and digested by the mech for fuel, only for that little notice to appear in the bottom right corner, "Plastic bags are dangerous! To avoid danger of suffocation, do keep this away from children!" Like HUH.

The fact that the devs give players guns and the ability to shoot things while telling players, "you're not that guy," I can't wait for the first players to be that guy and just dominate the battlefield on their own. Like how Subnautica devs wanted it to be a pacifist game with no guns, players just stasis rifled and knifed everything that moved.

I was watching a guy talk about his experience volunteering in Ukraine and he mentioned with all the drones and ways you can instantly be annihilated on the battlefield, your best chance at survival is to look unimportant as a target to drone operators who are guiding artillery/missile strikes and various forms of drones. True, good sci-fi has always and ever been an examination of the human condition under the lens of a future setting that’s based on the trends of the tech and culture of the current age. It’s taking what we have _now_ and saying “what happens to us if we can push this just a little bit further than currently possible?”
The Forever Winter is a fantastic addition to the sci-fi genre which, unfortunately, means it will inevitably be a little prophetic in time.

It can't be misery 100% all the time. It's why in certain works like Berserk, my favorite moments are the quiet ones like the characters walking on the beach or looking at the stars. Or in 40k, the Orks are absolute goofballs a lot of the time (while still being quite scary other times). You just need time to breathe in these kinds of worlds.

I am a bit of a lore nerd for stuff I like, I love to see reasons for something being there, this place looking the way it does, this unit behaving this peculiar way, and knowing how much love the devs put into the world and map has me beyond excited.

I have instantly got respect for the team for creating a dark future world that doesn't go full on nihilism and cynicism like 40K nor embracing comedy like Fallout or The Wasteland. Just because the world is dying and horrible things are happening don't mean **you** should be a horrible person, lack any emotions and simple desires. Neither people around you should stop being humans.

Frankly, this vision that insists humans will always be selfish in extreme situations is contradicted by our very history of community-driven existence. The bleak cynicism of humans always turning on each other feels more unrealistic than many "magic" plot devices those settings use. How even after so much indoctrination, WWI soldiers still crossed the trenches during Christmas to mingle. How many franchises ignore this particular feature of humans, it just makes the setting feel less real. This, on the other hand, is the opposite. Even on such a bleak world, humanity still shines through.

It's not about the action or violence, it's not about good vs evil, hell it's not even about the war itself.
It's about the people who fight those wars. It's about the humanity of warfare.
_THAT_ is what I love about war movies. It's their ability to take such a complicated and nuanced subject matter, boil it down to a handful of moments that you can't easily explain with words.
But when you watch them, everything just clicks and you go, " _Oh_ , I get it now."
Hacksaw Ridge, Saving Private Ryan, The Hurt Locker, just to name a few.

I love what I am seeing but there is 1 mayor concern for me: the way water works in the game. Why do I have to play the game when I *need* to instead of *want* to?
What I mean is the watersystem works in a way that you will loose progress when you run out of water and the game. According to the devs, does not calculate the waterusage when you play but also when you do not play is what I understood this as (I cant find the video anymore, they sat down and talked about this and other things at length. Someone correct me if I am wrong here please). So the game forces me to play instead of making me want to play it. It also punishing people that take time off from it.
I hope I didnt miss anything like a singleplayer mode with bots where this does not apply but what I got from the devs latest video is as I wrote above and I dont like that. The idea is good, you need water to survive, to keep the other people (NPCs) in your base going and get benefits from them. But I dont like the way it is forced, the whole watermechanic could easily be solved by using time for actions taken as a measure for waterusage. Example: sleeping after being out on a few small missions or doing an upgrade to the base / equipment with NPCs. That would be the better approach.
Hope this is a misunderstanding. Any opinions?

That's a valid concern indeed. It probably gonna be a bad mechanic if it gets implemented fully. Hope this get a good attention, as nobody likes something shoves to them as responsibility, when they just wanna try to play it as casually. Also, the much glazing in this video is concerning me as making the game aesthetically pleasing but too little or boring gameplay. That's a red flag in my book. Hopefully the game ain't end up as a pipe dream, due to how ambitious it becomes.

@@cipherstormwolf14 the water system is contentious! I always thought of it like Fuel in your generator in Tarkov; if you don’t restock it and keep your hideout running it runs out. Since losing water will never reset your account/character progression and only your gear and traders, I feel it encourages people to remember that your character is what matters, not the guns or meds you have in your stash. We’ll see how hard it is to deal with in your actual game

@@riloegaming This is what I was thinking it would be like too. and honestly I'm pretty fine with it. If you only lose traders and equipment and not more proper longer term progression like character and stats then not much different to playing unturned or rust or other survival games online where you risk being raided and or griefed by other players while you are offline or even online. So long as there isn't anything ultra important attached to water death I'm good with it. I like that the devs have a proper vision for what they are putting out and what they want the game experience to be like. Doesn't sound like it'll be too terrible to unrust and gather water after having not played for a while.

"Why does the third of the three brothers, who shares his food with the old woman in the wood, go on to become king of the country? Why does James Bond manage to disarm the nuclear bomb a few seconds before it goes off rather than, as it were, a few seconds afterwards? Because a universe where that did not happen would be a dark and hostile place. Let there be goblin hordes, let there be terrible environmental threats, let there be giant mutated slugs if you really must, but let there also be hope. It may be a grim, thin hope, an Arthurian sword at sunset, but let us know that we do not live in vain."

Really really excellent stuff. I'm really happy to see something so powerful created in response to the constant cannibalism of private equity in the industry. Just folks treating a medium as *content* slop and pulling the plug on anything that don't make line go up. This game is really such a wonderful antidote to that mentality.

You mention 40k as a thing "not to be" (and I fundamentally agree with your point), but, as someone who's been in the 40k sphere for at this point almost 20 years (I started half the editions of the game ago xD), I can tell you that "the world is crap so that the tiny acts of good/heroism can shine brighter" was much more closer to being the point of past grimdark.
If anything, current 40k seems to have focused on going through the motions, rather than doing things consciously and I hope that the Fun Dog folks learn its many lessons.
