"you're very determined, aren't you? you'll never give up. even if there's absolutely NO benefit to persevering whatsoever. if i can make that clear. no matter what, you'll just keep going. not out of any desire for good or evil, but just because you think you can, and because you 'can,' you 'have to.'" -Sans
UNDERTALE is the new indie game on the block that everyone is going crazy for, but why? It's just a story about a kid who travels through a world of monsters, right? Haven't we all seen that before? ...Or is there something more there? Something more to the story... Something more to the child's motivations... Something more to the player's motivations... What if determination isn't all it's cracked up to be? When psychology and philosophy combine, are you playing the game, or is the game playing you?

I'm not sure if it is common knowledge, but regardless I'll say it anyway just to clarify. The Milgram study was a real experiment but the electric shocks were not. The "learner" in the experiment was just a recording of sounds of someone being shocked and struggling to leave the experiment. You can rest a littler easier knowing people weren't actually shocked.
On a side note, I love how you connected the Milgram study to Undertale, that's awesome and I never thought about that similarity.

Since this video seems to be gaining some steam now, I just want to clarify that it is _not meant in any way_ to devalue your experience or character if you _enjoyed_ the Genocide route! Every gamer is a little bit different, and I just did not have time to discuss _all_ the possible psychological and philosophical factors that can be present in an _UNDERTALE_ run. Instead, I dissected what I believe to be the most common experience playing through _UNDERTALE_. I cannot speak for Toby Fox, but the game seems to be a commentary on gaming and our desire to complete things. I would not be surprised if the experience I described was the intended experience from the beginning and one of the main messages meant to be received by the player. It opened up a good avenue for discussing human nature, but it is still a video game. I am not accusing anyone of being a monster.

  • @aurafox1

I don't like calling it "Chara" because it's not "Chara." It's "you." I don't know where the whole rumor came from that you have to name yourself "Chara" in order to initiate a genocide run. You don't. The game expects you to input YOUR name. Chara is a representation of the player. When you encounter it at the end of the genocide route it doesn't say "I am Chara" it says "I am _____" filling in that blank with whatever name was input by you, the player, in the beginning of the game.
Calling it Chara is a further implementation of cognitive dissonance. Chara was there alongside you the whole time because it IS you. It is the reason you drove yourself to complete the genocide run. It is the part of you that wants to see the final ending. The "true" ending. And when you finally wake up and realize what you're doing, it's too late. It tells you you never were in control... and you weren't. At any point you could have turned off the game, reset and done the genocide ending again or even just walked away... but you didn't. You kept going because that part of you HAD to see what would happen. And because of that, you were never in control of yourself. It's the only explanation. As explained in this video, you have absolutely no reason to ever play the genocide route. The game constantly tells you to stop, to turn around, to go back, even FLOWEY HIMSELF, the character who cheered you on throughout the game and told you to kill everything you can because this world is "kill or be killed"... he begs you to stop. But you don't, you press on, even when the game actively discourages you, you move forward. That part of your brain MAKES YOU keep going. That part of your brain MAKES YOU fight sans over and over until you get that perfect run that finishes him off hours or even days later. That part of your brain MAKES YOU kill Asgore. It MAKES YOU kill Flowey... and then it leaves you. It manifests yourself as a character on the screen, saying it is "you" because it is. That's exactly what it represents. "The player." It represents all of YOUR mistakes, all of YOUR regrets. All of the pain and suffering YOU caused. All because of YOURSELF. You have no one to blame but your own sick mind.
So don't bother calling it "Chara" to distance yourself, just because that's what the game's data calls it. Call it by your name. Because that's exactly what it is.
And yes, I've done the genocide run myself, I'm not scolding other players for doing what I was too cowardly to do like most people. This whole rant applies to me just as much as anyone else. And don't think you're automatically better than anyone else just because you looked it up online rather than playing it yourself. Even Flowey agrees that you're just as sick if not worse. You wanted to see it just as bad but you didn't want to actually put in the effort to do it yourself. What, just because it's in a different timeline it doesn't count? It still happened. And you still supported it. If you truly were a creature of perfect morals, you never would have even questioned what happens on the genocide route. But that's the thing. You're not a perfectly moral creature, no one is. You're a human, the greatest monster of them all.

There is three people in the game that you control. Chara, Frisk, And you. you are not chara, chara had its own storyline, it's own history, It's own personality and family. Frisk is a body for Chara and the Player, in the pacifist route frisk becomes more alive, which makes it so that they can realize themselves and not you and chara. However, in the genocide route, Chara becomes more alive until Frisk is suppressed to nonexistence. You, become the one not in control, but you still led the hand in destroying everything, And chara sees that. Now, Chara is not ALL evil, but you the Player made it evil; Chara is the dialogue/flavor text, and when you give it more ExP (Execution Points) they become distant. In the end, you make Chara evil and power hungry, all from Determination that Frisk and Chara represent.
You the Player is NOT CHARA, Chara was a character that fell in the underground after the war, Chara became the second child of the royal family, Chara killed itself to free the underground, And Chara somehow fused with Frisk.
You the Player Control Frisk, but you cannot control Chara. The more power you give to Chara, the more it takes over you and Frisk.
Well, that's a summary of Chara.

So you could say this apply for people who refuse to do the Genocide route, yet watch a let's play of it? I assume so and even Flowey calls you out on it. "It's not my fault! I 'm watching this player kill monsters but I'm not the one killing anybody! It's THEIR copy of the game! My game copy is fine!" So essentially you just sat there and watched? Cool.
This game can be cruel. lol
I'm not saying that harassing people for playing the game how they want is ok. (C'mon, really?) But it is interesting how the same principles apply even if you are just watching.
I like the psychology of Undertale so thanks for the video. It's well done and I subbed. :)

Yup. I didn't want to have the guilt of having done a genocide run. I admit that there is still blame on me for having watched others play it. I am not completely innocent. Flower called me out. It's also interesting to see that if people see an atrocity taking place some won't take action, no matter there beliefs. Just the Bystander affect taking place I guess

I like someone's analogy that I saw on reddit, which gives me a good explination that either way, genocide run is bad, and you shouldn't do it.
If you do the run, you are Hitler. You are willingly killing and causing genocide to everyone, not caring for anyone until you realize your happy ending is gone.
If you watch it, your Hitler's curious friend. You don't do the killing, but you watch someone do the killing and get some enjoyment until you realize the people Hitler is killing are friendly and innocent.
If you watched Genocide like I did, your hands may be dust-free, but you watched someone kill the innocent.
Your still a monster either way.

2: what you would do is probably reinstall as undertale saves locally and doesn’t use the cloud.
3: if you actually did delete chara’s models chara would just be invisible.

Chara being summoned through your actions isn't completely accurate. They are summoned by you entering the underground, and LOVE gives them enough power to become able to interact directly with the player (or frisk, the game isn't too clear on it. It can be assumed, however, that they are speaking directly to the player.) I am aware that you mention this later in the video, however I just thought I should mention this for clarity.

I'd say a large driving factor to complete the genocide run is the sense of curiosity. Curiosity and the sense of disassociation. I'd actually say that's one of the main driving factors whereas the whole 'completionist' theory hinges on the satisfaction of finishing the game. Some are genuinely curious what happens when you turn the main character into the villain primarily because so few games or stories actually do or do it in a fashion that incites emotion.
Lastly, it's why you had to put the spoiler disclaimer at the beginning. Because players currently feeding into their sense of curiosity want to have that sated on their terms or with the genuine article.

  • @FlameRaven

    Chara is not evil
It's us, the player who choose either genocide or pacifist
I thought this theory was good until you said "We all have a little of Chara in us"
So, again someone is blaming Chara for our own actions (even if just a little, you are)
By now I think you already knew about Chara's terrible past and horrible experience with humans and that she wanted to save the monsters by sacrificing other 6 monster souls (the ones in the drawing)
I would love if you made a theory about Chara's horrible past and TRUE intentions-
Because I hate it when everyone blames them for "causing" the genocide route.
If you killed everyone you cared about, don't blame someone who's life, decisions and intentions you know nothing about
But well, I subbed to you anyways

I know just the video! there's a youtuber named judgement boy who made a whole video on what your saying. but is chara actually evil? it's hard to say. chara was an abused child who they said hated humanity. not to mention all the videos giving evidence about why chara is evil. the underground is lost and all monster and humans are dead. and the only way to bring them back is to give chara your soul. (evil) so technically yes chara is evil. now I'm not saying chara is responsible for the genocide route. but only trying to come back. every time you spare a monster. your actively fighting against chara. not giving In. but ey what do I know? you have your reasons and I have mine. and that's completely fine

The only problem I have with this game is the fact that I was filled with self-esteem after beating the genocide route. It's just the fact that Toby put the hardest bosses in the genocide route meaning you will still feel achievement for beating it, since you defeated the hardest boss. And even if those bosses wouldn't have been hard I would still feel achievement just because I beat the game completely.

    • @SuperLiammail
      @SuperLiammail 8 лет назад +1

+ItSupah I disagree sorta. Like The Imaginary Axis states these fights are pretty unfair and can take people up to a hundred tries. I made it up to Sans and honestly the fight wasn't really fun because it was unfairly hard in that you had to basically memorize the fight in order to win. In the end I began seeing this as a great waste of my Midterm study so I stopped. I guss it is cool to tell your friends you maned up and beat the genocide route but you already know they will just call you a monster for doing so.

    • @ChickenNuggetGames
      @ChickenNuggetGames 8 лет назад +5

+HERO I don't want to start a comment war, but what was unfair about it? Before Sans uses an attack, he usually uses an easier version first. There are a couple of things that you have to memorize, but with good reaction time, it isn't unfair, just hard and, dare I say, fun.

It's a circle, because despite Chara defining themself that feeling, it is also Chara who says that YOU- player- are the one who thought them that their purpose was to gain power. Let's not pretend it was Chara controlling your mind, because despite Chara being that feeling, there is a part of them who is not just that, and it's that part that asks for your guidance and DOESN't guide you. So if you do pacifist, Chara will simply think that their purpose is to save everyone and everything. Also, let's not forget what the rest of their speech says, since it prooves that Chara not only is not the one owning determination and resettinf but is also just another character that doesn't remember a thing after the true reset.

If you beat pacifist and replay, you have to pay with the happiness of all of your friends.
If you beat genocide and replay, you have to pay with your SOUL, and action the game remembers ETERNALLY.
whats that? you could do genocide, and then pacifist, so everyone can stay happy, and you will still be a completionist?
    Nice.
    Fucking.
    Try.
If this is your idea, it won't work. It will backfire, and your game will remember your misdeeds, and PUNISH you for it.

If you do the genocide route because you want to get everything the game has to offer, and you're not someone who knows how to get into the files than basically that 10 dollars is gone. Well, I just completed the genocide route tonight, not knowing about the "no happy ending" thing, until I watched this video a few hours later into the pacifist run where I'm trying to make everything right again. Looks like that's out.
This made me reflect again (I had done so already) on why I did this. Unlike most, I wasn't doing it for completion; I was doing it because the game had already said so much and had taught me lessons to apply to real life. It had also, in all seriousness, filled me with determination to go through with my goal of making the world a better place. So, I felt I needed to do the genocide route too, for the potential lessons it could teach me. To get myself through it, I had to do two things. One, I had to distance myself from what I was doing, which I did by reminding myself that this was just a game and that no one was really getting hurt. I also had to reason that these characters "deaths" were in the service of teaching myself lessons that would help further my real life goal of helping real, living people. I had a feeling that this lesson could be hard but...
Well, I guess I got my lesson. It's still fresh, so I haven't sussed out the exact meaning of it yet. And it hurts realizing that my pacifist run will not fix it. My first reaction on realizing that it wouldn't was to think about searching out how to completely erase the save so that I can indeed get my happy ending. But then I realized that the unhappy ending is part of the lesson. I think I'll complete this pacifist run and see the new unhappy ending for myself. And then, I can really understand what it is this game has to teach me.

Just a tip: you should be able to clear your steam cloud in preferences. If that doesn’t work reinstall, and if that doesn’t work install the game switch to a different steam account and follow the steps to set up sharing.

I know it's too late to get a happy ending but god damn it I want it and the only way is to do stuff completely against the intentions of the creator and delete the gamefiles (that are hard to find). It seems so naive and ignorant, I don't know if I should do it.. Then again, I just want my friends back :C

That's really funny, that's what I think every time I'm dreaming and I'm dreaming of my past self. I wanna go back and not punch the guys who bullied me. Then again, I've also nicknames "Chara" as Raven in Shimmer Raven Shadowheart, so just accept that some things shouldn't be done.

I know the feeling...Digging through game files to undo what you did is not fun. But, Do you think it was worth it? Yeah you get your happy ending again and you save all the characters you've grown to
calling friends but at the end of the day...
You know what you did, You know the atrocities you committed, You know the lives you took in cold blood and you proved Sans right. You did it all because you weren't satisfied with just having a happy ending, you did exactly what Flowey did, you reset the timeline and took away their happy ending just because you had to see what happens if you went Genocide.
Afterwards most players think that they can just play again and right their wrongs...But they can't...Not without striking a deal with the very being they brought into existence.
      They strike the deal.
      They lose their soul.
But they get the game back.
      But the true cost?
Post-Genocide endings...The worst endings in Undertale...The endings where you help Chara escape the underground under the ruse of regaining control of the game.
Which leads some determined people back to this topic. Digging through the game files to undo what they did.
I did the same thing too and i don't regret it...But we all know what we did...Sans knows what you did...And the game knows what you did...
(Sorry for the wall of text there. Felt kind of creative when writing it. But yeah you know you made a good game when people do this kind of sh$t because of how it left them feeling.)
      ;)

I literally can not do an all thinner route in the Epic Mickey games because I want to see this twisted version of the Disney Resorts slowly turn around for the better and be more like the ones in our real world.
